Fledglings Flying Frightfully into October

A huge thanks to Mogthesleepycat for steering us successfully through September FlowersFlowersFlowers

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Flylady. Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to.

Ta didn’t

Clean out drawer though I did a shelf in the baking cupboard.
Dust sitting room.
Ironing.

Zoo have you got Ned that’s why you are not on here.😉

Blood pressure is up.
I was advised to buy a home BP monitor. Have to write down BP for 2 weeks and send it in to my nurse.
Didn’t do any shopping there apart from chemist.
Came home for coffee and cake. Waited for DHs parcel. Then he took me to Dobbies. First time I have been since it reopened. It was lovely and quiet so bought some bulbs Red Riding Hood and Tete a Tête-à-tête daffs. I am going to plant them in the stone wall I think. We bought a present for our friend. We just keep to about £10-15 so I managed to buy a basket type pot with a little conifer, gorgeous dark red cyclamen, violas and a dead plant which is why it was just less than half price at £9.49 I will take that one out, plant some bulbs and I bought a Sweet William £1:04 to put in. So a better present for the money. I like when that happens. I treated myself to a pot with cyclamen, violas, heather and a dead plant. £6:49 so I will plant some bulbs in there too and maybe something else. Primula perhaps as I have lots of those. We looked at a greenhouse too. DH bought a poacher for the induction as mine doesn’t work on it but it does go on the hot plate. I’ll keep it for camping.

I'm off to the naughty corner too, I haven't done Flylady in weeks. Have been a bit productive with DIY and some decluttering, have been lax with that this week.

Bramblecrumble · 01/10/2020 22:14

Thanks for the new thread. On Tuesday I finally managed to take some stuff to the charity shop. A toddler trampoline I bought nearly a year ago but wasn't ever bounced on and a bag of books most of which came with the house we bought. We were in a hurry to move in and was an elderly persons house downsizing so we said she can leave stuff, we liked some furtiture and kids books... Anyway The charity shop. As they have a small space for quarantining donations they only take them on a Tuesday or Saturday and previous 2 Saturdays they were full so I actually got early and queued. I definitely have some brc in pretty much every room. But that was Tuesday, today naughty corner?...

Bowerbird5 · 01/10/2020 22:19

pumpkin great list not only love your decorations but also your beautiful ceiling rose.

I discovered that a shoe box is ideal for storing herbs. I used to have them on a pine wall shelf but I have a display of Buchan pottery on there now. I have a few spice jars there as well. Likewise I store them in almost the same categories.

Soup recipes remind me how much I like that soup. A sweet potato in it is good if you like it thicker.

Sorry about job that you have such a lot on I don’t know where you find the energy.
ED I love that you have posted your Tupperware. So neat. I am glad someone else has Tupperware I get skittered over mine by DH & BF. It certainly has lasted some of mine is over40years old.

Lisette1940 · 01/10/2020 23:26

Thanks for the squash tip MC will definitely use that. Much quicker than roasting. My spice collection is also divided into sweet spices and curry ones

🌋home ed
🌋put yesterday’s wash in dryer
🌋LOL
🌋cleared and scrubbed table
🌋worked on assignment
🌋replied to tutor email
🌋left voicemail at school
🌋found info for friend to investigate utility bills
🌋went to the pub alone (woohoo!) to do some of my assignment powered by Pepsi and chips!
🌋made k-pop version of inktober prompt list for DD, printed it
🌋made dinner
🌋drawing for inktober and cliquetober (the latter is a twenty one pilots version and I love them - hence my MN name - so figured I’d do that for extra prompt words!)

Glad I got a couple of bits done in the morning as I felt a bit lame in the afternoon but drawing in the evening was nice.

THATbasicWITCH · 02/10/2020 06:59

Morning all just having a quick catch up as i went to bed feeling rough last night.

I have (continuously) been looking at jobs online, my problem is a lot of places don't want part time but i really don't think i could manage full time on top of 5dc, 2 uni modules and a gcse 🙄

Yesterday i managed to finish and submit maths homework (which should have been done on monday)

If anyone has dc doing gcses this year are we thinking exams will happen this year? My tutor keeps mentioning how important the homework is as she may have to use it to grade us.

Bower - I haven't got much that is actual tupperware (although my mum has). I remember her going off to tupperware parties when I was little, then I got invited to one when I was about 25, in my young free and single days. I remember thinking "it's Friday night, WTF am I doing, I should be at the pub with my friends" but it was quite sweet. Lakeland are my storage purveyor of choice these days.

Bramble are you new to the thread or a regular with a namechange? I lose track a bit. Well done on the charity shop offload, my car boot is getting hard to shut as that's where I stash stuff ready to go.

Hi eariliy. I posted a couple of times a while back but basically a newbie.

EerilyDeleted · 02/10/2020 09:25

Thanks, I try and keep track but the threads move quite fast at times and a lot of people drop in and out, all are very welcome though.

Morning,

I have the day to myself as DH has gone walking. I am glad you are back zoo no skulking in the naughty corner. Here’s a spade get digging and anyone else who wants to dig a hole under the greenhouse with me. DH said last night “ Have you got something to keep you busy tomorrow?” So I listed all the things that need doing and he never flinched or commented. I threw in a few I probably won’t get done as well. Not a peep. So while he is off having a jolly it is fine for me to do the sorting, vacuuming, washing the floor, sorting the BRC in the dining room that have grown legs and crept in, ironing, cleaning out chickens etc now add to that list digging and I might surprise him when he comes home.

So I better crack on. We have a visitor later hence the long list as CHAOS reigns.

Made Zoo some pancakes 🥞☕️as bribery and at least it will give her a break from the teens.

Feeling better thanks. I am wondering if the sickness is food related. Think I am going to have to go back to a diary. Normally I can tolerate sheep and mild goat’s cheese but wondering if it was that. Only one toasted 🥪 but can’t think of anything else except🍷

That tupperware drawer is a thing of beauty Star

One of the 6th forms near here has announced that their year 13 is isolating for a fortnight. DD's school is planning mocks very shortly, they are obviously hoping to get some results down ASAP for their 6th form! Luckily for us DD is not in the exam years so it's not so much of an issue for us but I do feel for the pupils in years 11, 12 and 13 as it must be unsettling for them.

Make sure you dump any of his stuff on his pillow bower :o

I’m just partway through walking to the leisure centre as friend isn’t well enough for aquafit class (covid negative though phew!). Missed the bus as it was a minute early 😳 but thankfully the rain has calmed down a lot and the underpass hasn’t flooded this time. I was so tempted to skip it today, I am shattered (didn’t sleep till 4) but I want to prove to myself I can still do stuff and not rely on others so much. Plus the next two weeks I may not be able to do this class if other appts (DH’s pre-hospital covid test and my practical assessment) overrun.

SingToTheSky · 02/10/2020 11:55

Wellies that’s awesome about maths!!! It is so lovely seeing confidence grow with tricky subjects. DD1 was telling me about a story she’s writing in English, and has been getting on with homework pretty much unaided at times 😱 which is so much better as she was so avoidant before and this way I’m not helping her so much which means her teachers will get a more accurate view of what she can do. Hopefully they are actually marking it and giving feedback, as they didn’t really do that at all in lockdown apart from giving out the odd achievement point.

Don’t think I’ll be very productive this afternoon, DH is going to bed when I get in. His pain levels have been awful lately, I really hope the procedures this month help a bit.

AlexTheHalloweenCat · 02/10/2020 12:54

Bramble, I need to join you and Zoo in the naughty corner too, I also have some baby things I need to ebay and they've been sitting there for weeks.

Sing hope your DH is ok and his procedures later in the month help.

EerilyDeleted · 02/10/2020 13:40

I'm sitting in the car outside the vet, they have to take the pets in and out without the owner now. Cats are having their annual jabs. They bloody well know, they were hidden in the second most inaccessible place in the house, DD's bedroom, under the (low) bottom bunkbed, behind underbed boxes. There are shelves next to the bed at the head end too making it even less accessible. That was fun Angry. The only place that is worse is behind the sofa which is huge and in an alcove. Once I finally got hold of them they went into their carrier without a fuss though.
