Fledglings Flying Frightfully into October

A huge thanks to Mogthesleepycat for steering us successfully through September FlowersFlowersFlowers

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Flylady. Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to.

Thank you, I am feeling a bit better now. I have stuck my Christmas playlist on in the kitchen and my power of three is:

Mincemeat

Does anyone mind if I forget the links for today? Feeling a bit CBA.

No objections from me at all ED. You’ve done a brilliant job for the month and I was planning on ignoring them today anyway

SingToTheSky · 31/10/2020 12:49

Don’t blame you at all ED 💐 hope the Christmas playlist and cooking cheers you a little 🎄

Definitely feel a bit meh now. I did get some Christmassy orders done yesterday but might try and do some more later to cheer me up! I need to update the Christmas app with what we have bought/spent.

Going to confirm today’s plans with DH shortly and then:
PO3.2
❗️Book more tesco slots for future weeks
❗️LOL and hang out stuff currently in machine (picnic blanket and DH’s charity walk costume)
❗️Get wardrobe boxes upstairs and see what can be built when

HillsBesideTheSea · 31/10/2020 13:37

ED you kitchen is going to smell amazing! Halloween Envy

I have succeeded 2 of the 3. I am currently playing referee between mum and dad. Wow.

Anyway, more laundry and those brc need dealing with. Also water change on the fish tank, attempt to see if i can convince the top oven that has not worked properly for months to work for cooking chips later. At least if it doesn't get to temp we are not risking food poisoning on that one.

I have a white pillar candle burning. It is one of my halloween traditions. And it is needed today.

foxessocks · 31/10/2020 15:26

Hi all, I will set up the November thread as soon as possible! I have two very demanding children today, I was hoping to do it this afternoon but it's not going to plan 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Flushi · 31/10/2020 15:36

Hello, happy Halloween to everyone. My neighbours have got a system so the DC can still trick or treat. Thank you for my welcomes everyone!

Thank you bower, I am on the up now but I want to get everything back on track!.

Oh congratulations mc, I have a 10 month old boy (and a 2 year old girl) and he’s still breastfeeding. Be easy on yourself!. It’s a lot easier now but the first few weeks are very difficult. We don’t do shoes in the house here and I have wooden floors downstairs!

zoo I hope your children go to tour DD1’s and you get a break!

Your food sounds lovely wellies

I have to do some Christmas shopping tomorrow as I haven’t started yet. I’m feeling very shit about the news and I’m awfully on edge.

foxessocks · 31/10/2020 16:10

Here is the new thread ready for tomorrow ! www.mumsnet.com/Talk/housekeeping/4065939-Fledglings-assemble-for-the-nurturing-November-thread

SingToTheSky · 31/10/2020 16:14

Not my finest work, but the Body Bit Soup tradition has been upheld for another year 😂

SingToTheSky · 31/10/2020 16:48

ta da continued
👻washing hung out
🕷new LOL
🎃built wardrobe!!!
👻made body bit soup
🕷LOL in dryer, got DD1 to do her laundry
🎃HW with DD1

PO3.3
❗️Make decision about other Halloween snacks as DH and DD1 might go to the shops for supplies if I can be arsed to make anything
❗️Get Cagletini into some form of clothing and take a photo of her enjoying her present to send to the giver
❗️Make a start on filling the wardrobe, possibly bedding

In good news, my foot is a fair bit better today. In bad news, DH’s dad has covid. Tested positive and is breathless. He’s asthmatic so DH is worrying :(

Lisette1940 · 31/10/2020 17:23

That looks gross sing. Well done!💀

Lisette1940 · 31/10/2020 17:24

ED no stress at all. Take a day as a zombie. 🧟

Lisette1940 · 31/10/2020 17:26

It is FOUL here tonight. Bucketing down with rain, howling wind, trees down. Horizontal rain at one stage. 👻👻👻👻👻👻👻

Flushi · 31/10/2020 17:28

sing I’m really sorry to hear about your FIL, I hope he has a speedy recovery

Lisette1940 · 31/10/2020 17:31

Waves to Flushi welcome. Sorry sing was distracted and missed the bit about your Fil. I hope he has a mild bout.

EerilyDeleted · 31/10/2020 17:50

Sorry to hear about your FIL Sing Sad

Lisette - it was fould all day here till about 3 and it has calmed down now, hope you get better weather tomorrow.

Well, I have completed the power of three ignores huge washing up pile.

Hopefully completed menu planning and click and collect order for tomorrow plus booked next week's - Sainsburys website was crashing constantly, probably loads of people booking deliveries and C&C. I got a confirmation screen in the end but no email yet.

Decorated for Hallowe'en, we have put a few bags of maltesers on the outside ledge in case anyone comes along, it's weird as we usually have masses or T&Ters here.

Cup of tea next then feet up in front of the telly

Flushi · 31/10/2020 18:17

ED neighbours have put individually wrapped bags of sweets at the bottom of their drive and the kids are grabbing them socially distanced. It’s so sad that Halloween is so different this yeae

SingToTheSky · 31/10/2020 18:46

Thanks. Hoping he will not get worse. He looks after himself better following a heart attack a long time ago, but still worrying of course.

DH and DD1 have just got back from the shops. Going to do dinner soon. I feel a bit more relaxed having booked various shopping slots. My brain is a bit frazzled as I did actual shopping lists with usual fruit, veg etc, as opposed to securing the slot with expensive alcohol as I have in the past - I think at least three of my FB friends have recently forgotten to edit their baskets and ended up with Prosecco or similar 😂

SingToTheSky · 31/10/2020 18:52

We’ve had one trick or treater, a little boy from this street I think. Hardly anyone decorated here the last two years anyway, my two still wanted to though so it still looks like the Poundland seasonal section threw up on our house 😂 with cobwebs and paper spiders and such. So I guess that is still the signal that people can knock if they want. Thankfully the body bit sweets were individually wrapped so we just shoved the leftovers in a tub.

Going to cook some pasta shortly and then hopefully DH will go through all his tops which I’ve shoved on the bed. He’s often given t-shirts as presents and has a hard time letting go when they’re worn out/peeling design etc. 🙄

THATbasicWITCH · 31/10/2020 22:36

Urgh i feel like body bit soup 😑

Hope your fil ok sing

SingToTheSky · 31/10/2020 23:13

ta da
👻gathered all DH’s tops (haven’t had time to go through them though)
🕷put some stuff in the wardrobe (some clothes, my dumbbells, printer etc)
🎃made pasta for dinner
👻ordered some Christmas presents and discussed others with DH
🕷attempted to make plans to see another couple of friends before lockdown
🎃finished tesco orders and wrote dates in one list on reminder app
👻made cookies from a packet (currently in the oven)

Think that’s it really. So so glad the wardrobe is built at least. Tomorrow might be a bit hectic and I’m painfully aware of all the stuff I haven’t done this week.

Bowerbird5 · 31/10/2020 23:58

We went into tier 2 well half the village have but the ones half a mile away are in tier one because that half of the village is in a different Council to us. Wish I had walked up to see BF during the week.

Sing sorry to hear FIL has it. Hope he is ok. I dread getting because of my asthma and at present erratic BP.

Thank you ED for such a great job leading this thread. I am just squeezing it in before the date changes. Need to type faster.

No Halloween characters here this year. Even DH said buy some sweets for them.😯 we now have ten packets of sweets and half a box of Heroes.
After builder arrived and departed we went to town and did the shopping. I spent a huge amount but DH put some luxuries in like a bottle of Barola and a few other smaller bits. I now have ,I hope all the Christmas Cake ingredients for four houses. Also mincemeat except suet.ingredients for chutney and a few bits like sponge fingers for trifle.
More people but only one woman who annoyed me by coming too close.
Right jumping off this thread and over to the other one. Anyone else feel September went slowly but October went quick?
