A huge thanks to Mogthesleepycat for steering us successfully through September FlowersFlowersFlowers

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Flylady. Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to.

That's fair enough MC - 11.30 seems perfectly reasonable. Congrats on maternity leave. I can remember getting out of bed when pregnant by rolling on my side and easing my way out. 🤰Mind you I still do it sometimes now but that's old age for you!

THATbasicWITCH · 01/10/2020 11:45

I would love an 1130am lie in!

Dc5 was up at 530!

SingToTheSky · 01/10/2020 12:00

Morning all! Thanks for the new thread ED 💐 and Mog thank you for taking on September, a busy thread month AND a busy work month - you did brilliantly and it’s much appreciated!

Love the Halloween name changes. I haven’t bothered in recent years but I might try this Halloween and Christmas.

I slept until almost half 9 this morning 😳 all the exercise and late nights have caught up with me. DH is collecting Cagletini and DS is having a break on YouTube.

PO3.1
❗️Put phone on charge upstairs while hiding Cagletini’s present that just got delivered
❗️Take drying upstairs and put next lot in dryer
❗️Make more paper notes for assignment since the iPad is nearly dead, so I can’t type it up yet - while making sure DS gets on with maths once his YouTube time is over

Yes I’m really scraping the barrel for tasks today!

Never :o re BRC - I often feel I have an HRC... yes the H stands for House! :o

SingToTheSky · 01/10/2020 13:22

Hurrah, first list done. Included a lovely moment with DS doing my work while DS did his opposite me at the table.

PO3.2
❗️New LOL
❗️Get DS to do his last bit of work for the day (need the iPad for some interactive stuff)
❗️Looking at the above... I think I’ll clear the table 😂

HauntingHazel · 01/10/2020 13:28

Thank you wellies & ED for the soup recipes. I shall have to try them, I didn't realise there were so many options!
About to head out the door for work. See you all later in the naughty corner
👻👋 to everyone!

Ooh, bower I must have missed that you weren't feeling well, glad you're feeling a little bit better now.

Lisette1940 · 01/10/2020 16:36

Thank you for the soul recipes! I have a BNS ready but tend to roast it first. I HATE peeling them uncooked.

Another miserable wet day here. Driving rain outside. 🌦️☔

Lisette1940 · 01/10/2020 16:37

Ha - soup recipes not soul. But how appropriate 👻

ChillerKillerCroissant · 01/10/2020 16:40

I've got my halloween name change on, but it's me - ChicCroissant

Apologies for being AWOL from the September thread, I will stick to this one and not get distracted by the rest of MN. Thanks for September Mog and for October Eerily

Love eerie waves, Bower!

My usual style of flying here, fabulous some days and sub-standard others. House is looking a bit sub-standard in general, as I have been a bit distracted but going to knuckle down and get things sorted this month

foxessocks · 01/10/2020 17:02

Checking in, thanks for the new thread ed and the September one mog Smile

I'm so exhausted, work has been non stop, the kids have been non stop, my to do list is never ending. I would really like a break from it all!

Jacket potatoes in the oven for tonight so at least that's fairly simple.

😴😴

anorangeaday · 01/10/2020 18:03

Hi everyone, back home from work now. We had fish pie for tea and are gonna take the dog for a walk over the woods. I’ve put the DC in hat and scarves bless them it’s chilly. Just sorting through my finances now. I’ll post later with my ta da. I’m loving the name changes but I’m not creative enough to make one up.

I’m sorry that work wasn’t great that!

mc god I’d love an 11:30 lie in. 5am is average wake up time here!. Enjoy it!

I feel you about wanting a break foxes I’m considering letting DM have the kids this weekend and I can have the house to myself to sleep!. I hope you get some sort of break.

anorangeaday · 01/10/2020 18:29

also put the Halloween decs in the playroom today, gonna get some pumpkins to do a display in the fireplace soon

Lisette1940 · 01/10/2020 18:58

That's one scary spider orange 🕸️🕷️

ChillerKillerCroissant · 01/10/2020 19:20

Oh I love the decorations! I am assuming that we won't get trick or treaters this year due to the thing-I-will-not-mention so it's a good idea to get all the decorations and lights out early we have many to enjoy them ourselves. Perhaps I should get a bit of chocolate just in case for me Can't do an old-style apple bobbing as DD still has her brace one way to get it removed

That - sorry work isn't good, I wouldn't blame you at all for packing it in with everything else you have to manage.

Anorange - great decorations! You could change to "apumpkinaday"

Foxes - sorry you are so tired too, sounds hard.

Welcome back Croissant!

Ta da:
🎉"Morning" routine done
🎉Bathroom blitzed
🎉Kitchen blitzed. I've started cleaning one cupboard each week, so far as good! Haven't strayed too much over past few weeks.
🎉LOL
🎉Evening routine almost done.

Ladies, talk to me about how you organise your spices?
At the moment I have them all in a cupboard, but I don't like it as I can't easily identify the one I need quickly. I am thinking of getting those steps thingies to go inside the cupboard. I am not too keen on the idea of a spice rack on worktop surfaces. I like the working surface minimalism.

Freaky I find if you microwave butternut squash it's a lot easier to peel. I love butternut squash soups, especially slightly spicy (cayenne pepper spicy) ones. Yum!

That I am sorry the job is being a pain. Have you started looking for alternatives (you mentioned you are considering handing in your notice if things don't improve)

All 5am starts to the day are making my eyes water 😂 I shall cross that bridge when I get to it!

ED impressive list you have there, and loving the tupperware organisation 😊

Wellies your dog sounds adorable.
Oranges decorations are ace!

🍒🍒👋👋 to everyone!

TheUpholder · 01/10/2020 21:22

Sorry job has been crap That

Love the decorations orange

ED the tupperware drawer is a thing of beauty. It makes my heart happy Grin

Very jealous of your lie in Mc. Definitely the best way to spend the first day of maternity leave!

Good to have you back Croissant

Ta Das:
✅ beds made and s&s before work
✅ DLMS at work and left on time with everything done that needed to be done
✅ filled car up with fuel on the way home so I’m not playing my usual game of chicken on the red tomorrow (I feel like a real adult)
✅ sorted a return
✅ wrapped a birthday present and wrote card. Positioned it in front of the front door so I trip over it remember it in the morning.
✅ loaded DW and shined sink

Ta didn’t
🤦🏽‍♀️ Get up on time to do any exercise. Tomorrow’s a new day and all that though

Going to do 2 minutes tidy of the hall before I head up to bed. Last ditch effort at the zone!

TheUpholder · 01/10/2020 21:26

Cross post Mc. I have a drawer for herbs and spices, stock cubes etc. I try and buy the ones that have the name on the lid and the drawer has dividers to split it into sections. It’s lovely when it’s all tidy, but unfortunately our resident chef (DH) does not share my enthusiasm and regularly messes it up Hmm

apumpkinaday · 01/10/2020 21:35

I’ve had him for years lisette, I’m chuffed that he hasn’t lost a leg yet.

chiller I’m gonna buy some sweets too just in case there are trick or treaters. I’m quite happy to take the DC if we can do something with the neighbours so that we can socially distance and not come into contact with COVID.

Thanks wellies, the cobweb things sounds very annoying, I don’t blame you holding off.

Oh wow ED! That’s like porn. I’ve name changed now, thanks for the idea. I have a Christmas one in mind now too!.

Thanks mc! I have a sort of turntable for spices in the cupboard.

Thanks up!

Mc this is my spice storage. Two separate cupboards. One has a white shelf insert thing from Lakeland and 4 random baskets, divided roughly into "curry type" spices, "sweet type" spices (cinnamon, mixed spice, ginger etc), dried herbs and packet mixes. It's a bit makeshift but works for me.

Two separate cupboards - I have a few more in another cupboard behind my cups and bowls but no photo
