Fledglings Flying Frightfully into October

A huge thanks to Mogthesleepycat for steering us successfully through September FlowersFlowersFlowers

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Flylady. Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to.

I think my favourite bit is that it is about 6-10 drop in a litre of total (250ml white vinegar and 750ml water) so one of those tiny bottles of oil lasts forever!

Finally home a little while back. Knackered, but much less so than if we’d not had a lift both times. My friend is awesome. We had a nice dinner in the middle too (on me, obv, she refused money for petrol though) which was a much needed rest and dose of normality.

So glad the day is over though, getting everything ready was a nightmare. Cagletini also had a danger nap so I think we will all be tired tomorrow, hopefully we can still get a bit of tidying done.

Bowerbird5 · 28/10/2020 01:08

MC hope you are doing well. Sending our love to you.🥰

Stilllivinginazoo · 28/10/2020 05:51

Will a mould badge confirm its me that's old and mouldy??

Lil zoos birthday tomorrow.she will be 13(sobs)need wrap presents, bake cake and make house look semi presentable for photos.aaaaargh

EerilyDeleted · 28/10/2020 06:31

You are not old and mouldy Sing!

MC - hope all is well with you

Pumpkin - hope you had a lovely sofa day

Hills - that's a good idea the tea tree. I'm a sparing bleach user, don't like the smell but no asthma or similar to contend with, so I don't mind using it once in a while for mould. However we have tea tree oil so I might try that next time.

  • I have awake since 3.45. It's DD's early swimming day and she sets her alarm for 4.45, however due to the clocks changing and it being half term and not using her alarm so far this week it went off at 3.45. I didnt manage to get to sleep before getting up properly at 5.15 to take her to the sports centre for 6. Jogged back (it's less than a mile) and will shower, walk back and pick up her and the car at 7.30 before going to work. I'm going to be shattered tonight.

Tada!

Breakfast and a cuppa being eaten
DW and WM switched on
Cats fed

mission- vacuum your living room, try and get right round the edges.

a link to Flylady's decluttering page - I need a reminder sometimes.

Also, today is anti-procrastination day

Ooh I did the edges of my living room at the weekend Grin

Happy birthday to your dd zoo!

I'm another one who might try that tee tree trick, I need to get some first though! I've got some mould spray but it never gets it all. My bathroom has a lot, one of the reasons I can't wait to get a new bathroom!

ED that is a very early start! You sound more energetic than I would be at that time!!

THATbasicWITCH · 28/10/2020 07:38

SingToTheSky · 28/10/2020 11:19

Morning all. Surprisingly productive morning so far.

ta da
🦆weigh in/quick shower (trying to make this part of my automatic morning routine)
🦆LOL
🦆got Caglets to do various tidying of things
🦆filled sink for DS to wash up (making sure nothing tricky/sharp as he’s quite clumsy)
🦆tidied up stuff
🦆gathered dirty laundry and made Caglets take their own stuff into their own baskets
🦆quickly went through Cagletini’s stuff, pulled out some tatty stuff to throw, and a few bits to pass on to smaller relative
🦆got out new bits for Cagletini that I’ve bought recently (socks etc), removed packaging and put away in her drawers

SingToTheSky · 28/10/2020 11:23

Oh and
🦆scrubbed table!

Having a break now as I’ve not had breakfast yet and the Caglets are flagging a bit :o and I’ve told DH to stop too as he would just push himself too far and then be in even more pain than usual for a few days. He has NOT mastered pacing yet.

Going to message friend now to see what the plan is re the girls meeting - it is a reward for DD1 tidying/cleaning and her DD studying :o

Mc3209 · 28/10/2020 12:04

Hello everyone! Had my baby boy on 26th of October by C section. Still can't believe he is mine! I can hold and stare at him forever 🥰 He is cluster feeding a lot at the moment, so I am either trapped under a feeding baby on my bed during the night, or under a snoozy/feeding baby on the sofa during the day.
DH is doing the flying until I heal up and get the use of my abdominals back.
I am so in love 🥰

HauntingHazel · 28/10/2020 12:24

Yay mc that's great news to hear! Congratulations 🥳 👶 💐
Good to hear that DH is flying for you!

Sorry to dash so soon, I have to get going to work
👻👋 to everyone

THATbasicWITCH · 28/10/2020 12:54

Ooooooh mctiny ❤ Congratulations mc!

EerilyDeleted · 28/10/2020 13:09

🤱 Congratulations Mc! 🎉

OP posts:
SingToTheSky · 28/10/2020 13:43

Aaah amazing news mc congratulations 😍 hope you heal up nice and quickly, glad you are getting rest xx

ta da continued
🦆sorted plan re DD1 and her friend
🦆went through shoe box en famille to decide any to chuck/pass on
🦆got DD1 to do a few more chores before leaving: plastic bottle hunting/squashing, bringing bins back, taking recycling out, putting a few loose DVDs away
🦆taped up puzzle boxes while Caglets counted pieces
🦆emptied Kallax basket from upstairs so puzzles could be stored in there - it’s Cagletini’s fave activity so there are always jigsaws scattered on the floor!

The others just left (with two trips back to get thermos and then the big light bulb that was the whole reason for the trip to town!) so I’ve stopped again for a bit while Cagletini watches Pocoyo. Think I might try a drama on ITV as there are a few I’ve not seen, but I’ll break it up with the fun task of laundry.

foxessocks · 28/10/2020 14:26

Huge congratulations MC Smile

Sorry I think I started the birthday confusion zoo I misread it and thought it was today 🤦‍♀️

I'm worn out. Got the car to the garage nice and early, mum and the kids picked me up and we went to a local garden centre for a stroll around. Then we did the local Halloween trail thing. Then home for lunch and dd announced she wants to declutter her room so she can fit her Princess tent in there (it's currently stashed in the loft!) . Did a bit of decluttering but she got bored so we've left it for now!

House is a tip because I haven't really kept on top of things for the last few days. It just builds up so quickly.

No news on the car yet, I really really hope it's ready today so the kids can do their club tomorrow 🤞

The dishwasher has been on and I've briefly tidied up downstairs but I need to get all the kids bags unpacked, do some laundry and get upstairs sorted.

Jacket potatoes for dinner tonight so at least that's simple.

Also finally sorted out meeting friends on Friday, organised my tickets because everything has to be pre-booked, but now one friend ended up with a different time slot somehow 🤦‍♀️😂 obviously miscommunicated somewhere 🤷‍♀️

Lisette1940 · 28/10/2020 14:38

Huge congratulations on McTiny MC 👶👶👶♥️♥️👶👶. I hope you aren't feeling too sore after surgery. Quite right that dp should be doing the flying - tell him it's errand day tomorrow! Lots of being trapped under a sleeping/feeding baby for now - aren't they so cute when they are milk drunk?! Again many congratulations on your little cutie.
