Fledglings Flying Frightfully into October

A huge thanks to Mogthesleepycat for steering us successfully through September FlowersFlowersFlowers

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Flylady. Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to.

HUGE congratulations mc!! I hope you’re enjoying newborn snuggles❤️

SingToTheSky · 28/10/2020 16:24

Cagletini is napping, I’d best wake her now really but it made my afternoon easier! She was up at 6.

ta da continued
🦆moved some toys into a drawer
🦆dried bedding
🦆put dryer on again
🦆another LOL
🦆sorted some clean laundry (not away yet though)

Lost motivation now as I’m tired! Been watching Des. Should really crack on with some other tidying or maybe some more admin type stuff. Meh. Will finish the episode first.

Stilllivinginazoo · 28/10/2020 17:01

sing dd2 and I loved des!

I want jacket potatoes for tea but cupboards are pretty bare.dd1 going food shop at Tesco soon.theres enough pasta, pesto and dairy free cheese for lil zoo dinner(D's gets no cheese) and there's one sad looking carrot to go in that.one apple left,so that'll be sliced thinly to share for pud as there's no way I'm making their tea gone 9after she's good dropped and I've put it away!
Still not wrapped lil zoo gifts,or made banner

Have had frustrating call from camhs- doc thinks contact with school.nurse might be way forward of monitoring lil zoo whilst restricting food/fluid to avoid using loos at school.camhs had nothing useful to offer except they be ringing Friday next week to check I've made contact with school to attempt to see if this is viable during a pandemicAngry
It seems that 4-6 week blood tests to check renals are ok is all that we get til /if they fail.THEN we can have support...

SingToTheSky · 28/10/2020 20:12

That’s so rubbish zoo :(

ta da
🦆about half an hour in boodwa - mostly collecting things to throw away
🦆switched on dryer since DS didn’t 🤦‍♀️

Due to the above I haven’t put all the sorted laundry away yet - waiting for the rest to come out (subsequent LOL was towels so no need to wait)

Just had another break for dinner. Going to be a really late night thanks to Cagletini’s long nap, she just wouldn’t stay awake! Not sure how much else I’ll get done - we were planning to catch up on strictly once DH has dyed DD1’s hair.

Ghostlygrapes · 28/10/2020 20:35

Hello can I join please? I’ve recently become a single mum to a 7 month old. I’ve also finished mat leave and am back to work so I’m really struggling with keeping on top of everything I’m out little home.

EerilyDeleted · 28/10/2020 21:33

@Ghostlygrapes welcome! Sounds as though you have a lot on your plate. Have you tried Flylady before? Do ask if you don't understand anything, it's daily and weekly routines plus decluttering. We all muddle along doing what we can.

Bowerbird5 · 28/10/2020 23:31

🤗🤗hugs to you both Mc. Did you know you were going to have CS? Get DH to get you some Calendula cream for your scar from a health food shop. I had a Emcs with baby 1 and wish I had known about this. Someone told me before I had baby 2 and I had him naturally and used the cream on an episiotomy. The midwife said best healing ever and took the box away with her so she could tell all the midwives and all the mums. She was amazed.
Congratulations on your gorgeous new bundle.

ED thank you that is helpful. I felt a whole lot better knowing you had similar experiences. It was so real when I woke up I thought she was there. Another member of staff left me a message and said she had resigned. 🤭

Zoo 💐you have such a lot on. You could do with a break.

Sing I have a large pile of laundry in the basket still.

pumpkin such cuties. And that little sad face how could you resist. Bless her.

Ghostly welcome. It is friendly in here and none of us have perfected the house cleaning yet. We try. Some days. We try more than others. Today wasn’t a good day for me.

So...I haven’t done much. We started a jigsaw last night. I have washed up three times and made the supper of fresh vegetable sauce and pasta. It was delicious and more or less a repeat of last weeks. Last piece of pie and DF ice cream.

Must do better tomorrow. DH is going out with DS3 and then to watch a movie with him so I will be able to crack on. Oh I fed and cleaned out the hens and gave them fresh

SingToTheSky · 28/10/2020 23:51

ta da again
🦆got clothes out of dryer and put most of the clean clothes away
🦆somewhat LMS because everyone was talking loudly - came to bed just after 10 and was finally nearly asleep when they woke me up again FFS. Now wired and emotional 😳 have brought the iPad up to watch some modern family before trying to sleep again!

Lisette1940 · 29/10/2020 00:11

Today is another day. No point in stressing about what didn't get done yesterday. No fledgling left behind. Piles of ironing to do 👕👚🧦

Stilllivinginazoo · 29/10/2020 05:50

Bower I've not done a jigsaw in ages, must get one out!
Sing hope you got some sleep in the end
Ghostly grapes welcome

Lil zoo becomes an official teenager today
Dd2 had mother of all panic attacks 9-12 pm so I've wrapped nothing, nor made birthday banner or cake
One day I may be organised

Must go get it done!

Lisette1940 · 29/10/2020 05:54

Have a great day chez zoo, zoo.

THATbasicWITCH · 29/10/2020 06:33

Happy birthday lilzoo 🎂🎉🎈

Zoo you officially have three teens! Heres a hole incase you need to hide 🕳

THATbasicWITCH · 29/10/2020 06:34

Welcome ghostly

Stilllivinginazoo · 29/10/2020 07:40

that thanks!!
Typically she was up just as I posted.she cleared off upstairs to edit whilst I did banner and wrapped gifts.shes into vintage so was brown paper and string.how on earth did we manage before the invention of sellotape?!

THATbasicWITCH · 29/10/2020 07:50

See i would cheat and use selotape then tie string on top to decorate Grin

Lisette1940 · 29/10/2020 07:53

I think zoo you'd have been out to forage for her present and would have left the berries/nuts on a bed of leaves inside the cave. Then you'd harpic the relevant area outside the cave and feed scoutcat who'd be a LOT bigger.

TheUpholder · 29/10/2020 08:23

Haven’t got caught up with the thread yet but just swinging by to say massive congratulations Mc. Very happy for you. The hours spent stuck on the sofa with cluster feeding can be frustrating but I can categorically state, the housework will still be there when it’s over Grin. Enjoy those newborn cuddles.

Happy birthday Lil Zoo 🥳 🎉

Welcome Ghostly!

Got DD off to nursery, beds made and s&s. Just about to leave for my smear Sad then off for my mammoth shopping trip. Back later, have a good day everyone.

SingToTheSky · 29/10/2020 09:17

I was wondering about doing our presents with brown paper this year, I already have nice festive string. Where’s a cheap place to buy the paper?

Happy birthday lilzoo! Officially a teenager!

Finally got to sleep around 2 I think. My foot is definitely worse but I'm not sure whether to phone up or trek to the walk in centre (which would be difficult to walk to!)

HillsBesideTheSea · 29/10/2020 10:08

Sing all our local walkin centes have gone to phone for appointment no turns.
LIsette oh lordy the ironing. Been saying for almost 2 weeks that I will get that basket cleared. Should probably get around to it today
Hello ghostly grapes
Zoo happy birthday to lil zoo, good luck with the teenagers thing
That A timely reminder i am long over due my smear and need to get that booked. But we have this stupid online system for booking appointments and i cant navigate the damn thing.

I took a dayoff work yesterday to help get lots of things done and did precisely zero stuffs. It is a non day work and I need to accomplish something (a lot of something) but i have woken up with a cracking migraine.

So it will be a power of 3 kinda day.
Coffee and pain killers - put laundry into dryer and new load on
get dressed to the shoes how can you forget the babysteps Halloween Wink
Apply sealant in the bathroom where needed. Hope the window opens, plan to climb on the roof to shut it if it does open. End up with solvent headache.

Those 3 things require a few other bits to achieve so it is a more complicated power of three but if that is all i get done then that is a start.

Bowerbird5 · 29/10/2020 10:33

We could have an ironing hour this afternoon. Put a Channel 5 film on and have synchronised ironing🤣 because mine has sat in the basket for longer than a week too.

Happy Birthday lilzoo and another good luck to Zoo from me. Three teens in the house I only ever had two. Oh I did have three when DS3 was a teen as his friend from down the road. Used to come up most nights and she often brought her friend with her. They often used to strop...the girls not DS3 he was quiet and he always walked the girl from the village home even if they fell out. He would trail behind her the half a mile home then back up the steep hill. She is on our FB with her three lovely children. She still looks the same.
Ah the teen years!

Sing we have wrapped ours in brown paper before and DD always does it but she makes her own stamps and stamps them with printers paint. They are lovely. If I find some in the room of doom I will post a pic. DH has been putting stuff in there because he was painting his room. I hope he moves it out again. I think I just bought it from the small independent newsagents I go to.

Zoo puzzles are addictive. I can leave them for a bit but DH wouldn’t yesterday so we just did it. I asked him if this is what retirement is.😂
He has some of DDs he said. I remembered trying to collect a series of Christmas ones. I never got the full series but they usually appear around now so might get used ones on eBay. They were family jigsaws with beautiful illustrations.

Morning MC and tiny mc.🥰

Good to hear from you that.

EerilyDeleted · 29/10/2020 10:42

Morning all,

Non-work days today and tomorrow for me too, DH is off and the DCs are at home so a bit of a weekend vibe going on here. Had hope it would be a staycation vibe with a couple of trips out but between the weather and the restrictions it seems unlikely. However I have had a nice long lie-in.

My power of three for today:

Sort laundry and iron school shirts
Go to town and buy ingredients for Christmas cake and pudding, pick up picture from framing shop and return via allotment to pick up pumpkins.

Baking - make soft bread and pizza dough, start sourdough going for the weekend.

Happy Birthday to Lilzoo!

Bower - I'm 11 years down the line now from the experience I mentioned, it's not entirely forgotten but I am at peace with it all and so are my friends who were in the same boat with me (although I think it affected me the most). In fact it indirectly led me to these threads as I was suddenly at home, I joined a couple of months after leaving. So good can come out of bad Smile.

ED the threads have been going 11 years now? Fuck that flew!! I miss a few of the "oldies" "the founding fledglings" there have been some characters and adventures.

MC Congratulations on TinyMC! enjoy the snuggles.

EerilyDeleted · 29/10/2020 10:51

Yes, 2009. Who'd have thought it?

EerilyDeleted · 29/10/2020 10:58

I know it's only October, but I thought this might be nice for a KCC - Nigel Slater has a book called the Christmas Chronicles which I was given for Christmas a couple of years ago - it is part diary, part recipe book, part stories of winter and Christmas and is the most lovely seasonal book. He also has a series of podcasts to go with it, which I will be listening to between now and Christmas as I cook
