A huge thanks to Mogthesleepycat for steering us successfully through September FlowersFlowersFlowers

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Flylady. Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to.

I feel sooooo old right now!

Not doing bathroom today. Realised the teen isn't here and that means I can get into the study where his technology lives. So going to try to get that tackled today and saturday so it has been completely done by the time he gets back and it becomes a stand off issue again...
Also need to get into his bedroom so that has been bumped up the to do list. WHilst the teen is away the mother will deeeeeep clean. (tbf he surface cleans kinda normally but we have different definitions of the word clean) Halloween WinkHalloween Grin

FreakyForestier · 29/10/2020 11:48

Hills Bower - ironing is now done! by dh but I put everything away and cleaned the kitchen floor and all the bins. We have dealt with the mould too. Breakfast stuff cleared away. Been out for a walk too. Both catching up with work now. Need to hoover downstairs and clean cloak room too. Plumber coming tomorrow to fit new kitchen tap and new cloakroom taps. Ds just can't shut off the cloak room ones and they leak anyway so getting them replaced. Kitchen tap has been repaired before but is on its last legs. Electrician finishing job on Nov 10.

FreakyForestier · 29/10/2020 11:50

oh thanks ED - I will definitely listen to that. I don't think I have the christmas chronicles by Slater but I have many of his other books. Am pondering making a Christmas cake this year using his recipe.

SingToTheSky · 29/10/2020 12:11

Caught up - welcome ghostly! Is that a Halloween name?

Just sitting with DS going through his clothes. Got rid of loads - he gets quite attached and worried about new clothes so he’s done pretty well. DD1 is doing hers independently.

Had a brainwave about potential storage solution in DS’ room. It’s really small, and because his main obsession is Lego it’s stuffed to the brim. Currently he uses his bed drawers for some models and for spare bedding but once we’ve built our wardrobe we can have all that (eventually it can move into the airing cupboard but that’s full of BRC right now 😳). But I think if we moved his clothes into the bed drawers he could then have some freestanding shelves for Lego models (the walls are crap so it’s difficult to put shelves up) and use the trofast for actual Lego stuff rather than all the boxes. We might take one of the two trofast for Cagletini. I’d need to get some trays or dividers to fit in the drawers so his clothes could stay vaguely organised now and again 😂

SingToTheSky · 29/10/2020 16:20

ta da so far
🥱got DD1 to do a few chores (washing up, remake bed, help DH who was upstairs prepping our boodwa for the wardrobe)
😴went through DS clothes with him
🥱got his new clothes out and removed packaging
😴discussed storage idea with DH and looked on Ikea site
🥱got DD1 to start dance and English HW
😴bagged up some rubbish, old clothes etc
🥱gave reference for friend
😴got DS to do laundry (he’s now putting it in dryer)
🥱dusted and cleaned skirting area where the wardrobe will go
😴booked dance for tonight and tomorrow and paid on app
🥱future friend - set alarms for tomorrow as autism appt is a different time and then the younger two have their flu spray thingies

Quite excited, it’s finally ready for us to build tomorrow - it’s not even a nice one (more like a frame - we are both butterflies according to the clutterbug quiz, so I think it may work better for it not to be hidden away) but it will make things so much easier.

Lisette1940 · 29/10/2020 16:42

Gosh sing it's never ending isn't it? Homework and chores. Lego storage sounds good. I have underbed storage too though I keep spare toiletries there and the hairdryer.

Bowerbird5 · 29/10/2020 16:53

Wow I didn’t realise this thread had been going that long.

Thanks ED I will keep that in mind next time I have a nightmare. I think the couple of glasses of wine helped me sleep. It was lovely with our veggie pasta.
Sounds like a lovely book and I will look into the podcasts. I love anything like that at Christmas. It helps the prep time too.

Sing sounds like a good plan. It must be the month for it. DH is arranging for bed and now a little wardrobe that I love ( grans) to come over here now he has finished painting the bedroom. I started the bookcase in the hall today and he took some of the books over to DS3 house. He doesn’t use the huge attic room and the house is technically half mine and half DS2’s.

Right need to go be back later.

foxessocks · 29/10/2020 17:04

Hi everyone, Mumsnet not working too well for me at the moment so I'll keep this short in case I lose it (again!)

Hope your dd had a great day zoo

The kids had their club this morning and enjoyed it but their behaviour has been somewhat challenging today 😬

Dinner is in the oven and smells lovely, garlic chicken in breadcrumbs, it was messy to make but actually quite fun, hoping it tastes good too, the dc have agreed it smells nice 🤞

Ds ate chicken pie last night and his carrots which is good going for him at the moment 👍

foxessocks · 29/10/2020 17:06

I managed to spend 20 minutes decluttering the living room toy baskets today too, looks much better but ultimately I would like to get rid of some of the baskets now and get the kids to keep stuff in their rooms more. Downstairs shelves for books, dvds (kids ones as we hardly have any) and board games that's my aim! May take a while to get there though.

foxessocks · 29/10/2020 17:07

Oh and welcome ghostly!

HillsBesideTheSea · 29/10/2020 17:09

Did you get your car sorted Foxes? Sorry about Challenging children

HauntingHazel · 29/10/2020 18:49

Happy birthday lil zoo!
I just wanted to stop by to wish her happy birthday. It's been crazy busy here so I haven't had time to write anything, although I have been reading the thread.
Must get going again now, hopefully tonight I'll be able to put more.
👻👋

foxessocks · 29/10/2020 19:28

Yes thanks hills car was all sorted on time 👍
And the little cherubs are now in bed (although not asleep in the case of dd but I will settle for quiet!!) They have been very good at bed time so have redeemed themselves Grin

Foxes any chance you could share the recipe for this messy garlic chicken?

I’ve not achieved anything else this evening other than helping DSD2 with some essay stuff. Now helping DD1 as a friend is giving her grief 🤦‍♀️ no peace for the wicked eh?

Really hope we can build the wardrobe tomorrow morning, then it’s DS’ last therapy session, then I’m hopefully seeing someone about my foot while DH takes them for their jabs. I looked at my feet next to each other and it’s definitely a bit swollen, been painful for over a week now.

Bowerbird5 · 30/10/2020 02:20

Oh dear Sing That sounds like it needs someone to look at it. Says me who still haven’t spoken to GP. You can only ask at 8am apparently. No you can’t ask when you ring up about something else even though it is for the same doctor, oh no ring up at 8am. So everyone rings at 8am and no one can get through. Rant over. Oh and apparently he will do a phone call appointment...good luck with trying to see my shoulder then.

So I have sorted some more books and ta bloody da I have done the ironing. Took the whole film and a bit more. I haven’t put it away though I did cart it upstairs ah that will be why my shoulder is sore again.
I have made a 500 piece jigsaw tonight and now it can go to the hospice. It was all there so I was pleased about that.
Garlic chicken sounds good. DH was out all afternoon at DS3 watching a film and putting lots of DDs stuff out. She might not be very pleased when she finds all her stuff has been put to the brothers and she doesn’t have a room here anymore. Still as DH says we don’t know when they will ever get back. At least another year😥 I do miss her.
I know she won’t be here for Christmas.
We had butchers chicken in a sauce it was garlicky and ginger Indian sauce ( that is what it said) and Tilda rice with some garlic mushrooms I made. Salmon for tomorrow.
Right I better get to sleep.👻🍒👻🤣👻🍒👻🍒👻🍒🍒👻🍒🤣to everyone.

MrsTidyHouse · 30/10/2020 06:35

Most of my week has centred around clearing DS's room, and driving his clean stuff round to his flat. Today, I'm concentrating on the rest of the house.

Halloween at school today. They can dress up or wear casual clothes. No accessories allowed. Make-up is allowed. Had fun yesterday evening with LG cobbling together a punk-devil-evil-witch out of various bits and pieces. Basically everything that's black, ripped tights, and washable felt tips for dripping gore. Found an ancient purple lipstick, which is apparently very exciting. LB is going casual.

I've suddenly had a burst of determination to get this house really nice over the next eight weeks. Arthritis slowing me down somewhat, but seeing the LOs improving with a more structured routine spurs me on.

foxessocks · 30/10/2020 07:59

sing of course , it is this one from BBC good food www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/crunchy-garlic-chicken

I'd recommend it, it was delicious! Dd loved it and ate it all. Ds ate some of it which is a win for him at the moment Grin

I'm still in bed as we've got a slow start today, meeting friends just after an early lunch. The kids are watching tv. So I could really do with using the time this morning to work my way through my home bleugh list, more living room decluttering, bathroom cleaning as well as the basics...

Stilllivinginazoo · 30/10/2020 09:03

Morning all

Busy day yesterday
Lil zoo went to a retail park with dad.she wanted dd2 to come.dd2 wouldn't go unless I did.we left D's at home gaming as would've been too much for him,and he completely hogs dad if they all go out together.she got couple bits clothing,a cushion, phone ring and some peg lights as she had a poloroidcamera from me.its by a lake so took couple photos.
She wanted bacon(been that long since I cooked bacon had to Google how)for lunch, then she sat chat online friends and edited til tea time
Cake was disaster-vegan vanilla sponge I half recipe n miscalculated somewhere(she just wanted a single layer of cake).it smelt like cake but was flat and slightly greasy...I iced it as she had asked(to look like hagrids cake for Harry) and they said it tasted ok,just bit greasy so I said don't eat big bits!
Pasta pesto for dinner was the chosen option and then she came down after dd2 and I had huge row and stomp off to bed and fell asleep draped over my legs

I woke up to find her curled up against me like when she was small.i near cried,I miss them being little so much...

Today I have camhs medic with dd2 at 11.15(phone call) if they won't medicate her I'm moving out(only half joking)

Todo today is probably not going to happen as I feel in need of a sit on my bum under a blanket kind of day
I've planned lunch and dinner, and ate breakfast/fed little ones and cats
Dd2 has just woken up and still snarling so I will escape shortly for brief walk with lil zoo to get bread

Morning all, will just drop in the links and come back for some chat later.

Friday - daily focus is to clear out your car and handbag. I cleared my car of clutter last week but didn't vacuum it because it was raining, if we get a dry spell today I'll do that.#

Babystep look at your calendar - are there any birthdays or other events that you need to buy cards and gifts for?

Mission - high level cleaning in your living room, cobwebs in corners, tops of doorframes etc

OP posts:
EerilyDeleted · 30/10/2020 09:23

By the way, did anyone volunteer for next month? I don't mind doing it again but if anyone else would like to that would be great.

OP posts:
EerilyDeleted · 30/10/2020 10:29

Tada!

WM just finished 2nd load
DW on
Bread dough x 2 (soft rolls and sourdough) underway
Bathroom cleaned

Still raining Sad.

MrsT - sounds as though your motivation levels are good at the moment, it's nice when you feel it's making a difference.

Sing - hope you can get your foot seen, I missed seeing what happened but it sounds painful

Foxes - that garlic chicken sounds delicious, I have printed it out to try next week

Zoo - sounds as though Lilzoo had a nice day yesterday, it's funny how Polaroids are all the rage again despite digital photography, I remember being wowed when my Aunt and Uncle had one in the 1970s. You have made the naughty corner sounds very appealing, hope you can manage some me time in there later and hope the CAMHS call goes OK.

Right, better go.

TheUpholder · 30/10/2020 11:33

Right, all caught up. Can I join the mould club too please?! We currently have a ridiculous amount in the utility room (I’m ignoring that, it’s a losing battle and we are going to knock it down), my dressing room, some weird damp spots up the storms and just discovered some behind the curtain in the living room. Will definitely try the tea tree oil tip, but I’m just glad to know I’m not alone!

Any progress with the leak Wellies?

My shopping trip yesterday was disappointing. I got the Christmas present bits I wanted, but I’ve been saving to update my winter wardrobe and had planned a big splurge. I came back with some gloves, shampoo, and some new cleaning cloths Sad. I picked DD up early and we carved our pumpkins and put some decorations up. It was a lovely evening but flying was minimal.

Today I have the house to myself and I’m determined to relax, although I’m also going to do the home bleurgh so it’s out the way for the weekend.

Ta Das so far:
✅ morning routine
✅ supermarket trip
✅ shopping away and fridge wiped out
✅ coffee and croissant
✅ quick tidy round
✅ pay day budgeting

Going to do the bleurgh in half hour bursts separated by reading and tea and chocolate

November is looking like a busy one for me so probably can’t volunteer for the thread, but I’m happy to do December.

SingToTheSky · 30/10/2020 14:23

Afternoon all!

ED you didn’t miss anything - I have no idea how I hurt my foot 😳 it’s just been bad for a week. Dr sent me for X-ray in case it was a stress fracture, but it came back clear thankfully! He’s prescribed anti inflammatories and I can carry on as normal so that’s a huge relief!

Thanks for recipe foxes it looks yummy. ED you mentioning printing made me realise I should really print recipes when I find them. I’m not good at spontaneously trying stuff so I end up with open tabs and screenshots which are not organised at all and I’d probably end up just googling something again anyway. So maybe I should print them (or tear them out of magazines as I get the supermarket ones sometimes) and put them in a folder at least.

Needless to say I’ve not achieved anything else today so far! Except reading my library book in the waiting room.
