A huge thanks to Mogthesleepycat for steering us successfully through September FlowersFlowersFlowers

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Flylady. Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to.

Happy birthday cagletini! How much longer do you have until DD1 is done?
zoo I hope you get to enjoy some peace and quiet, you deserve some for sure.

I'm taking a quiet few minutes for some coffee this morning before I head in to work. Yesterday was so relaxing and it felt like a really long day off, which was really nice.

Witchytoes · 25/10/2020 16:09

Hi, thanks for your welcomes! I completely forgot I posted here and dropped off for a few days you don’t mind having me back do you?

SingToTheSky · 25/10/2020 16:09

It’s on Tuesday so all over very soon. And as they’re filming rather than performing on stage because covid, they aren’t going to be going in cold as it were. So it’s not a total disaster, I just feel really crap about another screw up TBH. Everything is far too hard to keep track of, when your brain is crap like mine 😳😳😳

In other news I’m very strongly considering swapping my actual piano for a digital. I never in a million years thought I’d do this. But the piano - which I’ve had since I was ten - is barely playable anymore. Beyond tunable (it was way off concert pitch even when I got it) and it’s lost its beautiful tone, a couple of keys don’t work anymore which makes me really sad. It’s hardly touched anymore but it still feels hard to give up 23 years of it. I think a digital one with the money dad has sent me may be a wise choice.

SingToTheSky · 25/10/2020 16:13

Of course you’re welcome witchy! No Fledgling left behind!

apumpkinaday · 25/10/2020 18:56

Hi all! I’ve spent today and yesterday resting and being kind to myself. I am struggling saying goodbye to grandad, but I feel better and am focusing on remembering him as the brilliant man he was and being happy I was able to have so many years with him. Thank you for being so kind and not judging me for being on and off the past week or so. I’m back now and hopefully will be okay. I haven’t caught up yet but will catch up from tomorrow. I hope you’re all well.

EerilyDeleted · 25/10/2020 20:53

Pumpkin - I'm glad you have the happy memories to treasure, I remember being devastated when I lost my Grandad (I was 18 so its a very long time ago now) but I still have lots of happy memories too.

Witchy - it's fine to pop in and out lots of people do and many of the regulars have spells of not posting much too.

Sing - sounds like the right decision re the piano, Happy Birthday to Cagletini.

Hazel - great pumpkins! I have a load up at the allotment, planning to pick them up and bring them home in the next couple of days. WE got the Hallowe'en decs out of the loft yesterday but have only put up bunting so far.

Anyway, we have had a productive weekend here, I got out the pointy stick and prodded the other Deleteds repeatedly.

Saturday.
DH took a car load to the tip
I did menu planning and supermarket order
2xLOL
Cleared out a load of stuff from the understairs cupboard, put some in the loft, chucked some and put the rest in a big plastic box from Ikea instead of randomly on shelves as it was before.
Went for a long walk which was nice, if a bit wet and cloudy. Trees stunning.

Sunday
Hotspotted kitchen
DH cleaned bathroom and mopped kitchen floor, hoovered front room
About 5xLOL, lost track, WM and dryer on all day
All beds stripped, just need to put redo them now the laundry is dry
Collected shopping and put away
DW rebooted twice
Helped DS clean his room, including bleach spray for mildew on edges of window.
Another loft trip, tidied pile of Christmas stuff boxes as it had all toppled over up there and brought down some empty ringbinders for DD, also some ancient files of papers for shredding.
Cooked sticky toffee pudding in Instant Pot
Took DS to football
Cooked dinner (sausage and mash)
Helped DS with some work
Filled in medical forms for dentist with DD.
Sorted lots of washing.

Work tomorrow and I want to go in early so I'm going to post links in a minute.

Pumpkin it's great that you have wonderful memories of your dear Grandad. We'd never judge anyone for not popping on here. Folk post when they can and are always welcome.

Sing sounds like digital is the way to go then! I've always wanted to learn the piano myself.

Several taps are on their last legs here so the plumber will be contacted next week. Spent all evening checking taps out online.

Pumpkin a difficult time for you. Take care of yourself. I never had a grandad. Both had died before I was born. I had two grans/ nana.

UpThank you.Hen slightly better. I kept them in until later. I am hoping she has just jarred her leg from jumping down. She is eating and drinking. No signs of cuts.

Happy birthday Cagletini. She shares out with DH. We had the boys over and a Chinese meal which was delicious. Black currant and apple tart for pudding.

ED thanks for links.

I’m falling asleep here sorry.

SingToTheSky · 25/10/2020 23:16

Happy birthday MrBower!

Cagletini had a lovely day, bit boring TBH but she helped make a cake and played with presents so it’s all good.

I’ve not been keeping ta da lists the last few days, I did a bit of tidying today and got DD1 to help out a bit more.

I’ve been off meds 2/3 weeks I think and my anxiety is definitely reduced. So that’s good. I just need to work out if I should risk trying something else yet!

apumpkinaday · 26/10/2020 00:04

ED I’m very lucky that I have a lot of grandparents due to divorce and blended families. I’ve lost my stepdads parents and my step mums dad (this grandad), but the rest are still going. My grandparents had my parents young and my parents had me young (I suppose I had the DC fairly young too), so I’m very lucky to be able to spend a lot more time with my grandparents than the average Joe would be able to, it’s lovely to hear you still remember your grandad even now!

Thank you lisette that’s very sweet of you!

I will do bower, thank you. I have/had 6 sets of grandparents and count my self very lucky. Happy birthday to your DH.

Happy birthday to your DD sing!

I’m going to get back into flying from tomorrow!

HauntingHazel · 26/10/2020 02:56

Happy birthday to your DH bower glad to hear your hen is doing a little better.
Speaking of grandparents, I only knew one set, my dad's parents had both passed away before I was born, in fact, my mum never met my grandad on my dad's side, he passed away before they met. My nana died when I was 7, my grandad died when I was 12 (10 days after by birthday). I felt closest to him so it was hard when he died.

Ta Das:
🦇 Work (5.5 hrs)
👻 Made dinner with DH - he barbequed the sausages, I sautéed the shrimp
🦇 Cleaned up kitchen with help from DH and DS (DD is at work)
👻 Repaired the kitchen table - added some glue to the fabric protecting the leaves of the table, as well as more fabric. We also added the floor protector stickers to the bottoms of the table and chairs.
🦇 Rotated DW
👻 Clothes are ready for tomorrow

I'm relaxing with a drink now, will take a shower soon and get to bed

👻👋 to everyone

Mc3209 · 26/10/2020 03:58

Ladies, my waters just broke, so I am going to disappear for a few days 😬
I shall update once I am on the other side!

Lisette1940 · 26/10/2020 08:14

Oh MC how exciting! Will be thinking of you today 👶👶👶

Lisette1940 · 26/10/2020 08:18

And how thoughtful of you to post to us in the early hours. I would imagine you are heading to the same place where I had ds 12 years ago. They are all lovely there ♥️. Lovely lady used to pop her head around the curtain and ask if I wanted a buttery or a softie. I had no idea she was taking about local baked delicacies 😁

Lisette1940 · 26/10/2020 08:19

Talking about I meant

TheUpholder · 26/10/2020 08:23

Morning everyone

Hope you’re doing ok Pumpkin. Don’t worry about posting or keeping up, we’ll be here.

You’re welcome to pop in as little or as often as you like Witchy.

Thanks for links ED. I put out the hotspots yesterday so I’m ahead for a change

Just a quick check in this morning. I managed nothing further from my to do list yesterday so that’s the plan for today, as well as a walk along the beach and clearing up the play doh that DD has out already. I’m only working two days this week so won’t be trying to squeeze too much in today.

Ta Das:
✅ fed people and cats
✅ stripped beds
✅ LOL in
✅ DW emptied, few bits hand washed
✅ benches wiped
✅ living room spruced up
✅ s & s x 2

Back tonight, have a good day everyone.

Ooh what exciting news to open the thread to! Thinking of you MC 😍

I’ve been awake since 7 but haven’t got up yet 😳 I’ve been adding to a huge list of stuff I/we need to try and do over half term. Ugh.
