A huge thanks to Mogthesleepycat for steering us successfully through September FlowersFlowersFlowers

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Flylady. Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to.

That’s awful Dancing Flowers

Happy half term Pumpkin, hope you enjoy your well earned rest.

Glad to hear DD managed to eat something Wellies, it must be a worry.

I haven’t been up for long and have no ta das yet other than polishing off a cup of tea and bacon sandwich. I have the usual home bleurgh to do (feel like a write the same post every Saturday Hmm) but no fixed plans for the weekend. Thankfully the house isn’t looking too untidy so I should be able to get the cleaning done pretty quickly.

Ta das from the last few days:
✅ kept on top of dishes and laundry
✅ Christmas event booked
✅ birthday card sent

Stilllivinginazoo · 24/10/2020 09:52

dancing that's awfulFlowersnature is so calming.and deffo ups the anxiety stakes in Peri.bloody hormones!
Wellies when they don't it I take everything they will as a win
Foxes/that sadly levels homework here will need some organising nagging.lil zoo(year8) has 5subjects,two are projects.ds has few bits, but as school aren't really catering his academic capacity properly I will be adding to it so everyone's working at same time.dd2 workload(a level) is best described as frightening..

Dd1 collecting last of lil zoo birthday gifts from Argos today for me

On the Xmas front I've got all the little bits, just need funds to order big bits

SingToTheSky · 24/10/2020 18:11

Quiet thread today! We are about 2/3 through the socialising but I did manage to escape to wrap Cagletini’s presents (and took far too long over it :o)

Not sure what we are actually doing tomorrow. Plan was to go to the aquarium but given the rain and the fact I can’t really put weight on my right foot Hmm it may not be the best plan!

We loved Enola Holmes wellies :) DD1 is a big fan of MBB because of stranger things!

Roast chicken in half an hour. Excited!

Bowerbird5 · 24/10/2020 21:02

Not many here today.

Had egg man look at chicken never seen anything like it. I brought her in tonight after dark and put her in a bowl of warm water which she seemed to quite enjoy. Nothing! No cuts. No swelling. Wondering if she has jarred it jumping.
Egg man brought me a bag of 🍏 Apples. I am going to make him a cake. He seemed quite pleased. Victoria sponge was the request when I asked him. I like bartering😁
Some sewing done. Not as much jobs done as friend called in the one that we have helped in the garden. Her family are in Newcastle and Lincoln so she has been unable to see them.
We might be going into the next level due to numbers going up in the city. We have 1 in the village. We have been fairly lucky here and people are keeping safe.lots of fresh air too.

DH is making baked potatoes and lamb burgers.

Is anyone watching Our Yorkshire Farm? I love watching it. Those children are wonderful.

apumpkinaday · 24/10/2020 22:52

Hello all, sorry I haven’t been on it was grandads farewell today. I’m a bit emotional so will be back in a few days when I’m feeling a bit more positive!.

Mc3209 · 25/10/2020 00:51

Pumpkin lots of hugs your way 💐💐💐
Bower is that the one with Tony the Pony? I watched few episodes. I love farm/vet programs.
Hopefully your wee chicken recovers soon.

Ta da:
🎉LOL X3
🎉Morning and evening routines
🎉 Aquarium maintenance X3

That's about it for today. Started cross stitching a wee project, just a small decoration. Haven't crossed stitched in absolute age, quite enjoying getting back into it.

Stilllivinginazoo · 25/10/2020 05:08

pumpkin hugs lovely
Bower poor chick, hope she feels better soon
MC will we get to see it when it's finished?

HauntingHazel · 25/10/2020 06:36

pumpkin sorry to hear you had an emotional day 💐
Sorry for lack of other personals 👻👋 to all. I have been reading through the thread, somewhat keeping up, but no time to respond.
I have been busy this past week with work as well as play.
Friday night I went out with a couple of friends on a ghost tour of the town I work in, including going into part of the building I work in 😱

Today (Saturday) I have a few ta das:
🎃 Sorted through junk drawer (somewhat, I need DH to go through it as well) I had bought drawer organisers for it so wanted to use them as they were on my countertops.
🕸 Sorted through papers on desk
🕷 Sorted through filing cabinet in desk
🎃 Watched my show to relax
🕸 Took a bunch of papers out of the filing cabinet to either be stored for all eternity or shredded 😆
🕷 Swept main areas of house
🎃 Quick mop in kitchen and bathroom
🕸 Found DDs old loom for making bracelets out of those tiny rubber bands. I will take them to a coworker Monday
🕷 Picked up DD from work
🎃 Picked up DS from his cousins house, he stayed the night
🕸 Had ILs come over for dinner, although it's their turn to cook so FIL brought dinner with him 😋
🕷 Finally got around to doing our pumpkins. We painted them and carved them. I will put some pictures on. They are still on my kitchen table until morning - we wanted to make sure they were all dry.

I have to work at my 2nd job tomorrow (Sunday) so not sure if much flying will get done. But I have to sleep now (I'm more than halfway there already).

Lisette1940 · 25/10/2020 06:36

pumpkin 💐 that must have been hard. Bower I keep thinking of All creatures Great and Small 🐔🐔🐔🐔. Your poor little hen. Hope everyone successfully negotiated the hour change overnight. Stitching sounds like the perfect hobby for these times MC though you need good light for it! I need to change the kitchen clock but every other clock should be automatic. I'm putting very hot coffee and croissants in the naughty corner to get us started today.

Lisette1940 · 25/10/2020 06:37

Waves to Hazel 👋

Cross posted with you. I will be needing that coffee ☕ in a few hours!

HauntingHazel · 25/10/2020 06:47

Good morning that I hope you all have a great day today. We change our clocks next week.

THATbasicWITCH · 25/10/2020 06:52

hazel i love the trick or treat pumpkin 🎃

Lisette1940 · 25/10/2020 08:38

Fabulous pumpkins!

SingToTheSky · 25/10/2020 09:56

Those pumpkins are great! We haven’t bought any yet, I thought about it when I was at asda the other day but didn’t think I’d be able to carry them home 😳

Cagletini has opened some of her presents. Kind of thinking I could have got away with giving the construction set (it’s like wooden Meccano) as a joint present for Christmas with DS, he’s loving it 😂

Not sure what we are actually doing today as the weather was awful earlier. I saw the clock change at 2 as I couldn’t sleep (“hang on, how can it be only 1.10am, I could have sworn it was 1.30 earlier... ohhhhhhh”) and then woke up at 7.30.

Do need cake stuff though and DH needs to collect meds. Maybe we could go to the park later, I feel so bad that despite being out of isolation since Wednesday she still hasn’t been anywhere!

Stilllivinginazoo · 25/10/2020 10:29

Sing hope little cagletini has a lovely day
Hazel fab pumpkins!
That I never got the memo either, feels like nearly tea time already😭

Ventured shop for milk with dd2 earlier.body hurt so bad I'm coasting today
Washing to do
Quick tidy of floors

Dd2 rant as dad means they going for a walk at local nature reserve today.means I'm getting bit time out as I'm not up for walking or making casual chat with his nibbs....hoping there's no fallout with zoolets after

foxessocks · 25/10/2020 10:59

Happy birthday cagletini!

Zoo enjoy some time to relax today if you manage it.

The dc are driving me crazy, jumping around upstairs so they sound like they are going to come through the ceiling 🙄 it's getting on my last nerve!!!

Ta das
Bed sheets in wash
Dh has done dishwasher
Rubbish out to bins
Tidied dd bedroom a bit
Made dd take some toys back upstairs 🙄
15 minutes decluttering in living room, got rid of some books (we have far too many books!)
Hoovered living room including skirting boards
Dd cleared out under the sofa
Looked up recipes for the week ahead to try and make sure I use the veg up in the right order!

To do
Make chicken casserole for lunch
Make pumpkin and ginger cakes
Take kids to swimming lessons

We had a pumpkin in the veg box last week it's not huge though, saw some absolutely gigantic ones in m&s and I did wonder if I'd even be able to lift them!

The kids are on the hunt for a snack to back later

foxessocks · 25/10/2020 14:24

Forgot to say wellies great about the alpha bites sounds like things are going in the right direction, hope that is still the case today.

EerilyDeleted · 25/10/2020 14:40

Just popping back to apologise for going AWOL over the weekend, it has been busy. Will catch up with the thread tonight and chat properly.

OP posts:
SingToTheSky · 25/10/2020 14:51

Cagletini is enjoying her day thanks :) the others just got back from the shops and got stuff to make a cake.

Just now I found out DD1 was meant to be at rehearsal an hour ago. I thought she’d done all the different dances the other week but there was one number to rehearse today and we had no idea. Mortified. DH sent a grovelling email. Really just want the show to be over now TBH, DD1 has already agreed she might quit after this as it ends up really expensive compared to her other activities and she doesn’t generally feel welcome there.

Oh, and the birthday girl dropped a pumpkin on my toe. 🤦‍♀️

TheUpholder · 25/10/2020 15:38

Happy birthday to Cagletini! (Hope the toe is ok).

I love the pumpkins Hazel. Think we are going to do ours on Friday night.

Hope you enjoy you’re time to yourself Zoo, and hope the weekend quietens down for you ED

Is the hen any better today Bower?

Ta Das for the weekend:
✅ LOL x 2, second currently flapping about on the line
✅ s & s x 2
✅ upstairs tidied
✅ clean laundry away
✅ chest freezer sorted and inventory done
✅ small supermarket shop
✅ various items belonging to DD and DH retrieved from under the sofa. Amazingly nothing belonging to me Hmm
✅ hall tidied
✅ living room dusted, throughly hoovered and mopped, wiped over fire guard, cleaned window
✅ rest of downstairs hoovered, mopped and dusted less thoroughly

DH has done some major garage decluttering 🥳 🎉

We’ve just finished our roast pork Sunday lunch and are all slumped in front of the tv. It’s quite sunny so we may attempt a short walk in half an hour before it gets dark, but we did have an hour at the nature reserve yesterday until the heavens opened so I won’t feel too bad if we don’t get out.

To do (today or tomorrow)
🐦 ironing
🐦 meal planning/prep
🐦 upstairs dusted and hoovered
🐦 bathroom cleaned
