A huge thanks to Mogthesleepycat for steering us successfully through September FlowersFlowersFlowers

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Flylady. Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to.

Sing I read that as phoned shop and scan people. Visions of you in asupermaket scanning people with one of those scan things.😁

UP that’s good to know. Perhaps he is on his way to Aberdeen!

DH thanks it is actually great that I can tell someone now and get it acknowledge that it isn’t ok for him to do that. He has a very quick temper especially when things aren’t going his way.

Wellies it is relentless isn’t it. I have noticed that the majority of housework falls on me.i have a lie in on mumsnet sometimes because although DH is up he isn’t doing anything other than be on the computer.

I don’t think he knows the bathroom doesn’t clean its self.

I wish I didn’t feel so groggy on these meds in the morning but it should be too much longer and then I hope I can start to decrease them. I used to be up at 6am every morning and love it.

MrsTidy every bit done is closer to the goal though. Sounds like a good job done. I haven’t been in the craft room for ages. I am keeping. Top of the kitchen, the bathroom and the sitting room. I just need to do the dining room and the boudoir THEN the craft room. I have made inroads in the boudoir so if I keep to one other room to mean boudoir then perhaps I can crack it.
I need to sort stuff in basket for charity shop then take it. I have a bag to return to someone and some things for women’s refuge. If I could do all that next week then it would make some space.

ED the perfume was a good one as I now have some ideas for next time. Your DD must be so 😁

Hi Hazel.

👻🦇👻🦇👻🦇👻🦇👻🦇👻🦇👻🦇👻🦇👻🦇👻🦇👻🦇👻🦇👻eerie waves to everyone

Hi bower you're up late! It certainly is NOT okay that DH loses his shit with you when he doesn't get his own way, what is he? Two?! Maybe you should spend a day treating him like a toddler since he likes to act like one, instead of a fully grown adult. I would say leave the bathroom for him to clean, but if he's anything like mine it wouldn't get done (although mine would just have the DC clean it instead!). I can't live in filth so just get on with it, but glad the DC help a bit.

Ta Das at my ILs (on my lunch break):
🦇 Cleaned up what looked like cat throw up
🦇 Vacuumed the carpet said puke was
🦇 Wiped bathroom sinks

I plan to do nothing but laze about on the couch tonight.
👻👋 to zoo, wellies, sing, dancing, foxes, ED, SC, chic (or creepy??, I don't remember your Halloween name!), that, toostressy and everyone else I have forgotten

Stilllivinginazoo · 15/10/2020 05:08

hazel we had cat sick yesterday...always on carpet or beds
Bower absolutely not ok for him to rant like that
Wellies don't have answers, bit I hear you as same here
Ed that would've took me over the edge

Well I've given up having spent 2 hrs on SM and no signs anymore sleep oçcuring

DS has orthodontics app this morning.

foxessocks · 15/10/2020 07:01

pumpkin sorry for your lossFlowers

ED that is so annoying, and to not even phone to let you know! Angry

Well I promised myself I wouldn't stay in bed too long this morning but get up and do something useful otherwise we end up rushing to get out of the door. So I will be back later.

Ned not in Aberdeen and can confirm that if he shows he'll be sent straight down to Bower.

EerilyDeleted · 15/10/2020 09:02

Morning all,

I'm still feeling a bit ranty. DH meekly offered to drop DD at school today just as I was ready to head off out the door with her . What gets me is the lack of thinking. Even if he had called me to say he was going to be late last night he would have said "do you need me back for anything" in other words "I haven't got a clue that I always pick up DS from hockey at 7.30 on a Weds because I rely on you to remind me every week even though it's in my phone calendar" when what I would have wanted him to say is "sorry, I'm running late is there any chance you could pick DS up" which would have been OK.

Humph. Well, perfume of the day (to steal a phrase from the long running perfume threads) is After the Rain by Arran Aromatics from Scotland. Back in a minute with some links.

SingToTheSky · 15/10/2020 09:24

That would piss me off too.

Not caught up properly yet. I’ve just been lying in bed scrolling FB and feeling sorry for myself. Pointy stick needed please.

PO3.1
❗️Get up
❗️Get DS set up on some work
❗️Decide if I’m going to attempt any work today, and when/where/how

EerilyDeleted · 15/10/2020 09:32

.

OP posts:
foxessocks · 15/10/2020 09:45

I'm just reading all this and nodding along thinks thinking "yes, I feel the exact same way!!" I am always waiting for my house to be "done"" 😂😂 but no it just goes on and on!

But I fell off the flylady wagon for a really, really long time and I am amazed at how quickly order is being restored. So definitely a day off, a week off, it'll be fine!

I had my work phone call, got it out the way first thing. It was a bit awkward because it was so vague...just wanting to know if I can increase my working hours on a permanent basis. To which I replied ok how many hours are you thinking? Answer - as many as you can do?!?! Also asked if I need extra equipment for working from home, well I have no idea what to say to that! They've never given me any equipment so apart from one old computer screen 😂 so yeah, any equipment would be nice! Then she said unless I want to work in the office from now on. Um, no, I took the job because I knew it was mostly a working from home job 🤷‍♀️ which allows me to be flexible with kids at nursery and school. And I also pointed out they have no spare desks in the office anyway 😂

Honestly, my boss is a little out of touch with what is going on I think!

So now I've got to go away and think about that and come back with an answer at some point before Monday 🤔

EerilyDeleted · 15/10/2020 09:47

That all sounds positive Foxes. I'm not loving WFH today as I am about to have a zoom meeting accompanied by the sounds of assorted tradespeople using angle grinders and chisels to remove damaged rendering from the house

OP posts:
EerilyDeleted · 15/10/2020 11:01

I have retreated to DS's room as it's furthest from the area where work is being done. The workmen fortuitously took a break at around the time of the zoom meeting but another man has turned up and started strimmering the grass verges outside my window, FFS.

SingToTheSky · 15/10/2020 11:18

Thank you for pointy stick wafting! I almost called it the naughty stick 🤦‍♀️

I have made myself breakfast (no prizes for guessing what ⬆️😅) and DH had already got DS started on some of the daily work. I haven’t even looked at the plan yet.

EerilyDeleted · 15/10/2020 11:22

Thanks Sing. On the plus side DS's room is sunny at this time of day and it has a lovely view. I don't spend much time in here these days but it was our study before DS was born and I now remember why I always liked being up here ignores floor covered in clothes and empty coke cans

OP posts:
foxessocks · 15/10/2020 11:33

ED I don't blame you for being grumpy I would be too!! It can only improve from here?!

Sing ooh bacon sandwiches, I would love one of those right now! I do actually have some bacon in the fridge but it's the smoked sort which I don't like, dh is using it in carbonara. Humph.

I don’t like smokey bacon either (actually don’t like anything smoked other than occasional salmon or duck). My favourite is unsmoked streaky 😋 zoo the avocado was actually smashed avocado in a pot with chilli and lime (never thought I’d buy it but it’s actually really nice 😳 and so much easier than trying to guess when an avocado is perfect 😅) although I do love plain avocado in chicken or bacon sandwiches too 😍

Home ed is very slow today. Had to switch off the new David Attenborough film as it made DS too sad :(

I never did decide on if I was going to get some studying done as per my power of 3, so I guess that’s a no.

PO3.2
❗️Find my phone and put it on charge
❗️Decide what work DS needs to do for the afternoon
❗️Get DS ready for tap class (which isn’t till 4 so that shows the level of my expectations today 😳)

I also have to speak to my GP but that’s between 2 and 6 so can’t really plan for that.

THATbasicWITCH · 15/10/2020 13:10

Urgh

I went awol again again 😔

Mc3209 · 15/10/2020 15:29

Wellies, Hazel, and ED what is it with housework and husband's (and the rest of the household)?! Husbands must be made in the same factory. When I reach the end of my tether with housework, I just stop doing any for at least 3-4 days. When suddenly there are no clean plates, clean pants suddenly don't appear in the drawer, and the house looks like a tip, then something gets done. I have to say DH is getting better and at least appreciative of what I do around the house.

Mc3209 · 15/10/2020 15:30

Gosh, the autocorrect. Husbands, not husband's.

foxessocks · 15/10/2020 15:39

Ta das
School run
Finished work
Quick stretching workout for hips
Put washing away
Tidied up , cups brought down

Stilllivinginazoo · 15/10/2020 15:50
