Fledglings Flying Frightfully into October

A huge thanks to Mogthesleepycat for steering us successfully through September FlowersFlowersFlowers

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Flylady. Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to.

Meant to say Wellies that was an interesting snippet about your dad. My mum loved the talc. I used to prompt my dad to buy a gift set with soap and talc for her from me.

foxessocks · 14/10/2020 10:23

Morning! Just stopping for a coffee (which I'm not supposed to be drinking because of the teeth whitening 🤦‍♀️ but I'm using a straw...) and a cookie which ds made with my mum yesterday (which are tiny because ds rolled them himself!)

A lot of this chat about perfume has just gone way over my head Grin it has reminded me of when I bought my mum perfume, first time I'd ever properly chosen something myself, now I'm a mum I realise how lovely it is when your kids choose something for you ❤️ I was so worried about which one she'd like but now I know she wouldn't have actually minded at all!

I do wear perfume most days but I only have one, it's Marc Jacobs, I got it for Christmas, I never buy it for myself tbh! My mil usually gets me a bottle.i only wear a tiny bit, I don't like anything too strong.

Ta das
Breakfast
School run / nursery run
Messaged my friend about meeting up
Hoovered downstairs
Changed towels & tea towels
Washing hung up
More washing on
Washing put away
Dishwasher on
Sides wiped
Rubbish out
Quick tidy
Cups downstairs

Be back later with more!

Bowerbird5 · 14/10/2020 12:45

Oh bless. Tiny cookies.

Well I got cracking.
Up, washed, dressed.
Made bed after airing.
Dusted chest of drawers x2
DH came in and started talking about moving wardrobes. Told him firmly that wasn’t happening today.he hasn’t even made a space in his room. I don’t really want it in here because it means I will end up with three chest of drawers which is daft. I have seen one or two houses recently with a similar problem.

Anti procrastination
I went down loaded washing which meant hanging out sheet and towels. Which meant feeding hens which meant washing/ scrubbing out their water bowl. Filling. Checked for eggs none but lots of poo. Which meant cleaning out hens. I only did it at the weekend or Monday.
Came in and phoned GP lesser of two evils unless I get C. Sorted.
Then phoned school straight away. All sorted! I was so pleased with myself as I have been putting it off.
Vacuumed mat in bedroom. Trying to declutter or at least find a home for some of the stuff. Putting it on my bed for time being.

No wonder we don’t get things done because we keep seeing other stuff that needs doing.

If I could get a start on Hall it would be good. I have Radio 4 on which helps because it is keeping the other stuff out of my head.

Stilllivinginazoo · 14/10/2020 15:16

bower well done for being strong and ringing school.i don't have ned chained up im afraid.peehaps he's ran off with the collective fledgling motivation/get up and go?
Foxes dd2 likes daisy

Lisette1940 · 14/10/2020 15:27

Glad you had a snooze zoo well done on getting the bloods done.

Antiprocrastinated to get work email off. Been dancing around it for two weeks.

SingToTheSky · 14/10/2020 15:32

I am a creature of habit and mainly use Lacoste Touch of Pink 🤣 although I did have some kind of MJ one... Storm or something?

Forgot a ta da list yesterday
🌀home ed
🌀bought a couple of second hand books and a jigsaw for Cagletini although not using them till Christmas
🌀made dinner
🌀LMS at the Caglets for not watching the toddler while I was making dinner so she ended up covered in marshmallow from a food wrapper DD1 had dropped 🤬🤬🤬 20 fucking minutes I asked for, to make them food (DH was ill upstairs), it’s not like I abandoned them for a night out, but they were so caught up in their respective screens they didn’t notice this occurring right next to them. 🤬🤬🤬

Ugh. Anyway. Today isn’t much better in terms of, well, anything.

But I have been productive and phoned the shop and scan people because our software wasn’t working. I did have to hand over to DH as the line was so fuzzy and he’s got better hearing than me, I’d have ended up saying “sorry could you repeat that” every other sentence. I do wonder though if the assistant heard Cagletini shout “I’m POOPING” as she wandered into the kitchen. :o

Second attempt at ringing the doctor now, hopefully she won’t interrupt this time too Hmm

foxessocks · 14/10/2020 15:55

sing 😆 (but sorry it has been a bad day!)

Zoo good to hear you had a bit of a nap!

Ta das
Cooked red cabbage and apple to freeze in portions
Made coconut cakes
Washed shower curtain
Did 15 minutes tidying in dd bedroom / wiping sides etc as well
An hour of overtime
Pilates stretches for hips
School run

I had an email from my boss asking me to call her in the morning about my workload and possibility of increasing my hours, I'm not looking forward to it, not really sure what she's going to say, have a fear of being told off, not sure why as I haven't done anything wrong 😂

Stilllivinginazoo · 14/10/2020 16:24

sing I hear you.i ask zoolets to keep eye on various cats I figure about get up to no good whilst I do something else and I usually return to find them doing what I'd asked zoolets to ensure didn't

SingToTheSky · 14/10/2020 17:45

Oh but the mini star mix are the best! Nicer than the big ones. Those are too squishy.

I have eaten really badly. I should probably live off vegetable soup for a couple of weeks 🤨

Doctor stuff sorted, got a cancellation with the lovely, MH-aware GP for tomorrow so that’s awesome. I have lazed since. Am super snappy as is DH. Sigh

Lisette1940 · 14/10/2020 19:15

I appear to be fueling anti procrastination with biscuit eating - not good. Feel stuffed 😕. I can't afford to over eat. While I'm full I'll do an online Tesco shop which I've also been procrastinating about. First quick house tidy while DH brings child to football training. When everything is done tonight we'll watch Morse. We've started from the beginning of the first series. Strangely enough I know more of Endeavour and Lewis than Morse.

apumpkinaday · 14/10/2020 19:34

Thank you for your kind words everyone. The family member is DSM’s dad (my grandad). He passed away last night after having a stroke. We’re all a bit in shock so I think I’m going to take some time away. Thank you again for all your kind words.

Stilllivinginazoo · 14/10/2020 19:55

pumpkin my condolences. Thinking of you XXX
Lisette I like Morse! Sounds like you have an enjoyable evening ahead.
Foxes coconut cakes sound amazing [drooling]

Ta da:
🎉Morning routine
🎉LOL
🎉Evening routine
🎉Went for a walk/waddle today

KCC I love perfume and I always wear it, even if I am spending day at home in PJs. I've got too many bottles, and I have different scents for different situations like work, leisure, bed time (yes, I put on a little bit of perfume before jumping into bed every night.. it's part of my evening routine). DH is similar but not to the same extent as me. Sometimes I even pinch his perfume if the mood is right.

Bowerbird5 · 14/10/2020 20:15

Oh Sing that made me laugh.🤣’I’m pooping’ 💩😂

Foxes in my case I haven’t done anything but I am guilty anyway! That woman doesn’t like me. 6 more days.

DH threw his toys out of the pram and shouted /swore at me because they have asked me to go in on Friday. He wants to go Fell walking. I have agreed to every time he wants to go. I told him over a week ago that it would be this week and I wouldn’t be able to chose she made that clear. This is the last hoop and then I am free. Told him I will get a taxi. Bloody men. He is going on Saturday anyway. Always wants his own way.He has made the tea.

I still need to wash the bathroom floor it will take 5 minutes when I find the floor cloth. I don’t use the mop because I use it for the kitchen.
Sorted some of the stuff in the hall and decluttered a bit more boudoir. Did the ironing since Zoo didn’t have Ned. I hope he isn’t in Liverpool or we won’t see him for weeks or Newcastle (SI for two weeks). AWOL send him packing if you see him after he has done your ironing of course.

Glares at Zoolets

Bowerbird5 · 14/10/2020 20:30

Oh Pumpkin so sorry.💐will you be able to have a few days off.
We have a teacher from the church school(retired)that had a stroke last week. She looks like she is going to pull through which wasn’t expected. Take care and we’ll see you when your ready.

Ta da
2xLOL
Drying on the kitchen radiator and Everhot.

TheUpholder · 14/10/2020 20:35

So sorry Pumpkin.

I can confirm Ned isn’t in Newcastle Bower. I’ve been looking out for him. Sorry DH shouted at you, that’s really unfair Flowers

Grin at Cagletini Sing. I had similar recently when on the phone to the bank. “MAMMMMMY! Come wipe my bum!” I could hear him trying to suppress his snigger.

Good luck with the boss conversation Foxes.

Zoo I’m glad the GP took everything seriously and hope all is ok with the bloods (or you get an answer)

Waves to Hills, Wellies, Hazel, Lisette, ED, Chic, That, Mog, Tidy, Mc, That, Dancing, SC, Merry, Cineraria, Bramble and anyone who has escaped my list.

KCC - I’m currently wearing a Balenciaga perfume which I treated my self to after loving it on someone else. It smells completely different on myself and I was a bit disappointed but I’ve had a few compliments on it. My usual cheaper day to day one is D&G light blue. I used to love Ghost Zoo - I also have a strong memory for scents and it reminds me of a holiday in my teens. I wore it for years but then it suddenly starting smelling awful on me. I might have to try again now I’ve remembered how much I used to love it!

Not really any ta Das here other than a s&s this morning, surviving work, and a nice easy bedtime with DD. Not sure I have the energy for sink shining but I have a slightly later start tomorrow. Night all!

MrsTidyHouse · 14/10/2020 21:32

Desk is tidy, paper to-do pile is waiting for attention. Lots of schoolwork up till June now fits into ring-binders on shelves, which was a bit of a surprise! LG's arts and crafts are in boxes, waiting for sorting and culling. LB's pile is much more manageable.

Not much else done. The laundry pile is still there, and I will definitely tackle it tomorrow.

Lisette1940 · 14/10/2020 21:37

mrstidy my laundry basket remains full of ironing. I've decided to do it in daylight 😉.

Pumpkin I'm very sorry to hear about your grandad. It must be an awful shock. Take your time and be good to yourself. Be excessively gentle with yourself 💐

SingToTheSky · 14/10/2020 21:55

Pumpkin so sorry xxx

Ah yes wellies - housekeeping, like history, is one damn thing after another. Sorry about the lack of appreciation from your family. I'm sure they do appreciate you but need a nudge to being this to the fore in the form of giving a hand

Lisette1940 · 14/10/2020 22:22

Bring this to the fore, I meant. MC I've never been to Oxford so I'm enjoying seeing the place on TV via Morse. I was too busy being a student in Dublin to watch the series the first time around. Dangerous place to be an academic with all those murders but I do like the cerebral Morse. John Thaw was only 44 in the first series but with the white hair he looks older.

EerilyDeleted · 14/10/2020 22:30

Pumpkin - I'm so sorry to read your news Sad.

I am tired (as predicted this morning). I am also brandishing the pitchfork Angry. By the time DH rolled out of bed this morning I had been up for 3 hours and done swimming drop-off and pick-up plus a few chores. At lunchtime I picked DD up from school for her orthodontist appt and took her back. This evening I took DS to hockey and cooked dinner. All DH needed to do was pick DS up at 7.30 so I could get to tap class. Did he arrive home on time or even call me? No, just didn't show so I had to go and bring DS home before arriving late to tap class. Then when I got back from tap he looked shocked when I glared at him. Oh and it was a work day for me too. Needless to say I didn't get all my work done so that's me all behind for the week.

Anyway, in good news, DD had her braces off and has a beautiful smile. I've had a nice chat with a friend by whatsapp this evening. I have enjoyed the perfume chat, thank you for indulging me. I am off to bed now.

pumpkin I'm so sorry to hear about your grandad passing.
ED don't you know, men aren't capable of doing anything, it always falls to us women! Sorry you had such a full and rough day. Hopefully he sees the error of his ways and makes it up to you soon.
wellies I think we have all been there at one time or another, hopefully they will step up and help more, you just might need to LYS for them to see.

Got to get back to work, I'll add more later.
