A huge thanks to Mogthesleepycat for steering us successfully through September FlowersFlowersFlowers

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Flylady. Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to.

Emailed boss and said I'd do an extra 8 hours per week

foxessocks · 15/10/2020 18:41

Also today I booked dd an optician appointment and then realised she'd had one in July, the reminder was from the old opticians she doesn't go to anymore - doh 🤦‍♀️ I've cancelled it now!

Mc3209 · 15/10/2020 18:55

Foxes well done on sorting the work stuff out. You should have put Cleaner on the list, the worst that can happen is they say no!
Witchy hello! 👋 I remember living in a tiny studio flat in London, and just throwing a sweater on a bed would make the whole place look cluttered.
Zoo what cake did you make?

Ta da:
🎉Morning routine
🎉Made dinner
🎉Washed bathroom mat. It usually gets a wash every week with my white wash anyway.
🎉Sorted out the fridge

Make up is actually got sorted last month. Quite happy with missions so far 😊

MrsTidyHouse · 15/10/2020 21:55

Finally tackled the laundry. Two loads of school uniform up on pulleys. Another load of sundry red things this evening. Tomorrow another two loads, running out of hanging space.

Clean clothes away, all rubbish in bin, house looks weirdly tidy. It sounds daft, but I get slightly twitchy when things are tidy and well-organised. It usually means I've forgotten something really important.

Cleaned and polished four dining-chairs that had been in the shed for a couple of years. They look really good now.

SingToTheSky · 15/10/2020 22:08

Evenin’ all. I’m really sleepy.

ta da
🐌home ed
🐌spoke to GP re meds (she’s going to request the specialist sees me earlier than my planned review next April)

SingToTheSky · 15/10/2020 22:13

Just a quick stop in. Hello witchy
I took a few of the truffles I made into work. It seems I'll be busy around Christmas! Lots of coworkers wanting a price list of everything I make. I have attached pics. The are super easy to make, but I use quality ingredients but still feel guilty about the price. Anyway, I'm about to head back in to work, I've been decorating the office for Halloween and in a sorting out mood!

Finds an empty plate in the naughty corner just a few unrecognisable crumbs on it.🤔

Well DH has been better. He asked me if I was going to my/our friend’s house with him. If I was I had better get up and get ready as he was leaving at 10. I swigged the tea he brought, jumped up, had a shower, dressed, swigged the now tepid tea and gathered handbagetc. Fed chickens and decided I would go and wait in the car as he was on the computer.🤣 I thought he would look for me to tell me to hurry up then not be able to find me.😂😇 He never said a word after I had sat there for 5 mins. Anyway friend was delighted to see us as DH had promised before lockdown to cut down a stump and another tree / shrub. We started with coffee then he got started and I looked at a gardening catalogue.Friend and I are in the same gardening club and we get discount so I added some order on to hers while she directed DH. Then I raked up some bits and we bagged up some chopped bits. She made us a lovely curry for lunch and apple crumble. Then we did some more so she is very pleased. Bought some meat and bumped into a very ex pupil and her lovely mum so had a bit of chat and I invited them out. I don’t usually mix with the parents but this family have always been dear to my heart. They are a bit different and I could see eldest didn’t always fit in so took her under my wing a bit. Her sister fitted in more.

They reckon our county might go into high. Part of it has the bottom half. I am going on Saturday but we aren’t going to that bit. At least I won’t be as I am only going to cook. I am going to prep it tomorrow am. Then cook it and heat up in the slow cooker down there. Not sure what I am making for pudding.

MC I love the thought “ that husbands are all made in the same factory.”
ED you have every right to feel grumpy.
Isn’t it funny how he can’t remember to pick up DS every week but if it was a boys night at the pub he would always remember. I suppose selective memory might go with the selective hearing they all have!

Ned can be sent to Wellies or Ed because I have down the ironing for this week. The rest of the washing doesn’t need ironed. Oh and please tell me where would you put large bath towels other than the airing cupboard? I had no towel, went to airing cupboard just outside the bathroom to find none. Ask DH( he has form for this) and he had”no idea” so I will track them down tomorrow. He is still going for his walk I will have to get a taxi...fifteen bloody quid. There is a bus ( the only bus
) but that is 10:15 and if it wasn’t for Covid I could go into town and walk the mile out but I have stuff so too heavy and I don’t have to be there until after 1pm. Damn nuisance without the 🚘 DH is dropping me on Saturday and going walking again😤

Right I better get off to sleep or I will be cross posting with Hazel again. Waves across the ocean🙋🏼‍♀️
Night, night.

Bowerbird5 · 16/10/2020 01:14

🙋🏼‍♀️ 🤷🏼‍♀️Don’t know where those other symbols appeared from. Hazel🎃 those look very professional and yummy. I have a kit from DS1 last Xmas I must make some for him for this Christmas.

I missed a page🙄

Welcome witchy

That good to see you. We’ve had a moan about DH/DPs so check the last couple of pages for manchild behaviour. You’re in good company.

HauntingHazel · 16/10/2020 03:54

Thank you bower they're super easy to make (and I don't use a kit)
I'm happy to hear that DH is being better. It still sucks that you will have to take a taxi instead of him taking you into town, that's selfish of him. Although maybe it will give you a bit of a break and a change of scenery.

At work I got a little bit Tidied up, although not as much as I'd like. There's a little more Halloween decorations I want to put out there, as well as at home. After work I made dinner and cleaned up the kitchen, with help from DH and DS (DD is at work), as well as got my lunch ready for tomorrow.

👻👋 to everyone

Stilllivinginazoo · 16/10/2020 05:11

hazel they look absolutely delish!
Sing hope you get a decent sleep!
Wellies good luck with Tesco and Lidl(never tried lidl..)
Bower sounds like a lovely day with your friend.still think the man is being unfair not giving you a lift today..will be thinking of you.Flowers

SingToTheSky · 16/10/2020 07:45

Morning

Yum Hazel they look lovely! Making truffles is something I could try with the Caglets perhaps 🤔 although they won’t look that neat 😅

I would have had a good 8.5h sleep if I hadn’t kept waking up Hmm but still, I did sleep. I have my skills assessment thingy at 10 and I am SO NERVOUS 🤦‍♀️ “counselling” someone over zoom with someone watching while I have to remember to demonstrate several particular skills seems pretty unnatural compared to actually listening to them like normal Confused.

Mind you perhaps once I’ve got this out of the way and finished my written work (shouldn’t be too much longer) my anxiety will reduce a bit generally as it has definitely been weighing on my mind.

Best get up, shower etc then go over the books and write a few prompts out - at least on zoom I can have some notes next to me 🤪

SingToTheSky · 16/10/2020 07:51

Hmm feels like a power of three tiny tasks at a time sort of morning!

PO3.1
❗️Quick breakfast and vitamins
❗️Pick out some clean clothes
❗️Teeth/mouthwash/shower

Thank you for the welcome backs

I am ok just busy. You know how it is.

Some of you look very busy! I havent had time to read back Blush

Power of three i think

💛 reload washer
💚 hang wet washing
💙 drop dc 3 and 4 at school

EerilyDeleted · 16/10/2020 08:35

Morning all,

Friday is babystep 16 lok on the Flylady website at her daily email - you never know what it is going to say.

Friday is declutter car/purse and date night. Friday night for me is chaperoning at a swimming pool 10 miles away so not exactly date night but never mind. Car could do with a vac that's for sure.

Our mission for the day is shine your basin and counters in the bathroom and relax in your guest room.

Next week we will move on to the master bedroom (or bood-wa as one of the Fledglings was calling it very sweetly a while back).

EerilyDeleted · 16/10/2020 08:42

I am feeling less grumpy today. It's a beautiful morning and I managed to catch up with my work yesterday. The painters and plasterer turned up yesterday so the house exterior revamp is coming along nicely.

Tada!

Up, dressed, 1 x LOL on line, DD dropped at school

OP posts:
SingToTheSky · 16/10/2020 08:57

FFS just lost a post. Was waffling about plans for boodwa - ikea delivering three days early so we can hopefully get our wardrobey thing built over the weekend, I will need to stash and dash in there though as it’s a horrific mess!

I will also try and make a note of what we both need for clothes as we had some cash given to us to get sorted (especially the caglets obv as they keep bloody growing!) - I have decided to try and do as much as I can of that next week during school hours and only go in for the bare minimum during half term (basically with DD1 as DS isn’t fussed what I get him).

An hour to go.

PO3.2
❗️Make home ed plan for today (I really REALLY should have done this before)
❗️Get DS started on a bit of work and then put the iPad back on charge
❗️Write a quick note about each counselling skill with ideas of how to demonstrate them in this conversation, and decide what three to focus on

THATbasicWITCH · 16/10/2020 09:43

Good luck with your assessment thing sing 🍀

Ta da

💙 dc 3 and 4 at school
💚 wash on
💛 wet washing on rads / airer / in dryer
💜 manky wall scrubbed
❤ windows open

PO3 #2
1️⃣ quick bath
2️⃣ more washing in dryer
3️⃣ dry dishes away
