Just opening the new thread while I have a chance! All welcome here, join in with the housework chat, the keep calm corner and general ramblings about life in lockdown!
Any of us have been here a long time so we may seem cliquey but it’s never intentional - newbies and returners are always welcome.

Could the older ones take on more of the cooking willow?

We are a long way from that sadly, DD1 can do scrambled eggs and makes fantastic french toast on her own but that’s about all independently. Hoping by having the twice weekly “help dad cook” thing they can at least get some basic skills. Trying to make sure they days they help are not the “shove nuggets in oven” type days :o

I’ve not really got going yet. It’s going to be a while before we are actually up and running by 9 each day!

lane there is a mute button on top of the Alexa, you can also say "alexa turn on do not disturb"

LaneBoy · 23/04/2020 09:59

Oh thank you is that the one that turns red? I’m clueless 😂

DS in a mood as I made him redraw a map. DD1 disappeared upstairs to do English, supposedly. DD2 doing yoga :o

Morning everyone; Dobby the house elf (super-sized version Grin) checking in. Haven't caught up properly but hope everyone is ok. Another lovely day here weather-wise and the lilac is in full bloom so we have gorgeous scent wafting across the terrace.

It has to be said that - despite our extremely easy (compared to most people) circs here - it has taken us all a while to get back to the "new normal" after Easter (when we all got a bit grumpy) with dh working long hours out of what is now our dining room (now we have moved furniture around) and my new job responsibilities having disappeared for now (sob), because office expansion has been suspended under current circs, so it is back to the usual 3-day-a-week admin for me (tedium/sob) plus some billing and cleaning early in the morning and late at night (thank heavens for lighter evenings) so as not to disturb the workers (dd is sharing the office with dh) and the dogs. Feel like I am starring in a very middle-aged, grey and rather portly version of the Elves and the Shoemaker. Grin

But I am taking an hour and a half early eve for myself when I go through a grim/tired patch around about 5pm - 6.30pm.

After an initial period of feeling overwhelmed/a bit distraught dd is MUCH MUCH happier now she is receiving proper lessons on-line and has a shed-load of study to do (strangely!). She is sticking to her running schedule too. The adjustment was a bit painful though it has to be said Grin

It's all been a big adjustment actually and we all went through a bit of a bad crabby patch, but now we have worked out our individual routines, and worked out one another's routines are (clear communication is not our forté in this household) we are feeling a lot better.

The member of the household who is "suffering" the most is our "puppy"/youngest adoptee dog, who is actually a fully grown adult now, but owing to her horrible puppyhood, has developmental issues. She is VERY bright and very active and very bored ... . She goes a bit neurotic if she isn't occupied so I am trying to do a bit of training with her in the garden every day. She has two walks a day (one with me and one with dh) but it's not enough without off-lead exercise.

I've written a proper daily activity chart and a horribly long and fairly hideous task list of all the things I have been procrastinating over for many years. I am trying to cross one of the latter off a day but in reality it is one or two a week!

And Finally, finally, after Easter blow out, getting on top of new diet regime a bit too! Eating eggs for breakfast and skipping lunch altogether.

Fluffiest I've been meaning to say that our houses sound rather similar - ours is old and wierd too - with bits dropping off! Absolutely love the forget-me-nots and your print! And a belated happy birthday to your dh!

Foxes and Lane and Giveme really really lovely to see the photos of your fantastic small people! Smile Smile Smile

Lane should say that although I am not commenting on your memes daily; I am really enjoying them! And one of them inspired my daily activity chart! No need to apologise about lateness; home edding far more important! Flowers

Zoo I can't believe there wasn't a manned phone somewhere you could call about your lost shopping! That's outrageous! Shock

Ouch Bower hope your head is ok! Watch out for sporotrichosis aka rose picker's disease! Ha re: Gladys and vocal egg-laying Grin!

Oh no Hazel so sorry about your sister Sad Hope she is ok.
Give your hair a fortnight or so and it will be much better! Hope your mum had as good a birthday as poss in current circs!

KCC Qs:

Talent show = would have to be warbling badly (very low second alto, always made to sing tenor in choirs because there are never enough)
Painting = huge fan of Modigliani in general but would love to have a John Lavery on my wall!
Education = passionately believe ANYONE can be taught to paint and draw to a reasonable standard. But the techniques need to be taught properly first! There are methods that have to be learned and practised - like any other subject - before you get to be reasonably accomplished. Then you can let your imagination wander! So I would make time in the curriculum for that. And sewing and proper cooking.
Comfort food = anything with potatoes!

Today’s stuff:

  • lockdown humour
  • maths humour (sort of)
  • plague humour

Today’s question: What’s your usual breakfast? And what is your ideal breakfast?

My usual is crappy chocolatey/sugary cereal tbh! I’d managed to break the habit until lockdown Hmm or toast and jam/lemon curd. I do love a fry up especially with fried bread :o but also my favourite lazy brunch which we really don’t have enough is French toast (with strawberry/banana and cinnamon sugar), or waffles with bacon and maple syrup 😋

OP posts:
LaneBoy · 23/04/2020 12:54

Oh hang on. Ignore the plague humour, I chose a different one. It’s meant to say a useful thing to remember in tough times 🤦‍♀️

Oh well I did more than three weeks before making an upload mistake! Yay!

Hiding on my bed trying to find some motivation. Hmm Anyone seen some? I’m not even sure a walk will happen today but I’m hoping the others go so I can have some peace TBH

Feel slightly better about life since:
💚I signed up to a couple of learning things
💜a hug from DH after his conference call finished (caglets has all been driving me MAD with endless noise and demands) and he’s taken over maths with DS and got lunch for the toddler
💙a socially distanced chat with a friend (car door to doorstep is over 2m!) when she dropped off the printer paper, nappies and two small pies she picked up in tesco for me! I almost ran out of things to say though as I’m so brain dead!
🧡I had a phone call from the lady who wants me to type/edit her second book - she’s very elderly and can’t leave the house to post the manuscript so she’s going to read out what she’s done so far over the phone. Not sure how well that will work compared to the first book (she’d already written it when I met her so she just gave me the lot and I typed it as and when) - she’s very chatty and will probably change things a million times as we go but currently I DO NOT CARE because it is something to occupy ME that isn’t based on catering for the needs of my family. Also money. Yay!

OP posts:
LaneBoy · 23/04/2020 14:28

Still stressy from sensory overload and generally having a gazillion demands on me (so it feels) and home ed hasn’t been up to scratch today (found some incomplete maths from last term as well which is stressing me more than is proportionate) but I now have a little steak pie in the oven (simple things eh?) and I will grab some silence later no matter what. DH has gone up to help DD1 plan a music festival for (unsurprisingly) music class, but thankfully the toddler is happy pottering in the garden so I at least have some sunshine and a big glass of water.

Need to decide where to set up the iPad for DS’ tap class later though. Some kind of angle that doesn’t show too much mess!

I think the up and downness is due to the menopause. Have eaten caramel digestives in lieu of HRT for a sugar boost at least.

Glad you had a good day Lane

Usual breakfast is porridge with Greek yoghurt and berries or apple.

Would happily have Eggs Benedict every day though.

Glad, I'm not the only one who cant function in the evening.

I have had a nice full day of everything except for cleaning:

⭐ put cuddly toys in washing machine that accidentally got left outside overnight. Confused
⭐ did a morning of computer work: wrote a blog post, sorted out paper work for DDs school, etc
⭐ went for a long walk along the river with family. We were out for 2 hours! Very quiet but still ran into a family friend who I love to bits, so that was a really nice coincidence to see them
⭐ mooched around with DD
⭐ cooked tea and washed the dishes

sly Wine here's to old houses! I keep thinking we have a terrible house, but a wonderful home.

hazel sorry about the hair. But if there is ever a time for having a bad haircut this is it! Hope it grows out quickly for you.

zoo Flowers hope the shopping nightmare is resolved.

I love most breakfast foods. Normally have toast and butter. But on Saturday mornings DH cooks a Full English or sometimes pancakes. Best breakfast is a hotel breakfast where you can eat all the food and do none of the washing up!

LaneBoy · 23/04/2020 19:09

I’m more the opposite tbh - I take a ridiculously long time to be anything but a zombie but sometimes have a surge of productivity in the afternoon/evening.

Alternatively there are days like this where almost everything is just plain WRONG. I’m definitely Extra Autistic today. Sensory issues magnified etc.

Feeling rather stressed again as errands DH needs to do may mean I’m also in charge of home ed/schoolwork supervision/toddler wrangling for the day tomorrow - hopefully not when I’m meant to be working, TBF I can rearrange but I really want to get started and I don’t want to fall behind on home ed stuff just when we’ve got going after a few weeks off.

Online tap class went ok for DS. Now sitting outside having done the nice thing of playing the game DS has been bugging us about (it’s the third in a series I loved so I bought it but unlike the first two it’s really rubbish! But we can’t get rid as he loves it). Was writing up my therapy session from last week finally but after a while life got in the way. I’m now hiding upstairs about to watch Friday Night Dinner and just fucking BREATHE so I don’t kill someone. 😳😳😳

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 23/04/2020 20:14

I Am A Domestic Goddess! Oh yes!

Well, actually, no, but today I have:
♥️ Not actually killed DD when she announced she was no longer prepared to eat pie for tea and couldn't I just cook her some quorn?
🧡 Hoovered the stairs, hall, bathrooms, kitchen, tilly, cloakroom and music room
💛 Cleaned the family bathroom before / during bathtime
💚 All the S&S
💙 All the LOL
💜 Hand drawn a family tree back to 1650 because I can't get it printed
🖤 Taken the report and tree to put on the client's doorstep, ring the bell and run away, and picked up more work while I was there!

DS1 cooked pie (and extra quorn) for all of us and I made jam tarts with the leftover pastry so everyone is happy. DH has WFG (worked from garden) all afternoon and is cheerful. DD is pleased with her drawing. DS2 is working out. DS3 is to have his Humanities Assessment shown to KS2 as a fine example of what to do.

I'm retiring, once the washing's off the line, before my bubble bursts!

No flying here either. Didn’t manage to pull myself together in the slightest.

Quiz was ok but the caglets were soooo hyper all afternoon. We actually got to the stage after where we didn’t LET DS go to bed and said he had to do some dancing or exercise first! So he did a bit of just dance until he got tired and now DD1 is doing some Kpop dancing on YouTube and I’m stressing about tomorrow 🙄🙄🙄 not sure what the plan is for tomorrow yet so I haven’t written DS’ list of home ed tasks either. We have some standard things that he always does anyway so can start with those if nothing else.

Can anyone recommend some learning apps for age 10+ please? Decided to mix things up a bit as we’ve used the same apps (doodlemaths/English, Duolingo and some others) for such a long time. I’ve downloaded Dragonbox (algebra) and a spelling thing called sir linksalot which currently has a free sign up for the lockdown.

Evening all,

Zoo - so sorry to hear about Iceland debacle, hope you got it sorted.

Bower - ouch, rose thorns can be nasty

Lane - yay for friend and pies

Willow - grr to pies/Quorn fussiness

Well, not much Flying. Work this morning, then menu planning, list making, shopping, unpacking, wiping and putting away took most of the afternoon. Plus a few admin jobs. All the DCs extracurricular stuff is getting going again mostly on Zoom so I need to update my calendar. Have gone to bed and left DH fo do the dishes.

ExpletiveDelighted · 23/04/2020 23:36

KCC - my favourite breakfast is soft boiled eggs and toast (with marmite). I eat this most days, my alternative being toast and peanut butter or soft cheese. Or croissants spread with soft cheese (never jam). I virtually never eat cereal and can't face a full English so early in the day, we have one for dinner once a month or so though. Agree about hotel breakfasts being the best!

Bowerbird5 · 24/04/2020 01:36

👑 thank you Willow.
I got some Savlon today. It is ok if I don’t touch it. Thanks, yes, it did hurt.

Zoo are you ok.. I have been thinking about you today.

Breakfast varies from cereal like Special K ,porridge to Saturday morning occasional fry up.
My favourite breakfast is what my dad used to occasionally pancakes with maple syrup and a couple of rashes of bacon. Yum!

HungryHazelEyes · 24/04/2020 03:50

Well my hair is just going to have to grow fast, that's all I've got to say! I have an A line cut, and it was getting long so I shortened it, which went okay, I guess. THEN I had to have DD SHAVE the back, which would have been fine also, except I had her shave way too much off. It's not as bad when I flatten the back, I curl the sides everyday anyway so you don't notice the hack job I did. Hairdressers aren't going to open for almost another month, depending on how everything is then, as things will be starting to open. I might have to just start wearing hats and scarves!

Not very busy at work, but did some organising of our supplies as my boss wants an inventory of everything we have. It took me an hour and a half to get 4 shelves organised and even then, most of that time was taken up by 2 shelves! It's such a mess.

I have been bad at answering the questions, but I'll answer today's- I don't usually have breakfast, it is my coffee. I try to stick to keto for the most part so have it with cream only. I love it, and it fills me up. If I do eat anything- like if we go out for breakfast I usually just get sausages and eggs. If I'm being bad I'll have pancakes 🥞 but know my stomach will be hurting later in the day so depends on how badly I want them!

HungryHazelEyes · 24/04/2020 03:58

zoo you've been very quiet today, I hope you're doing okay.

lane sounds like you need a break, that you're getting overwhelmed with everything. Are you able to take a break at all? Go for a walk by yourself?

give your boys look like angels, they don't possibly fight!

bower I hope your head stops hurting soon. I love hearing about your hens, eventually I would love my own to get fresh eggs, you can't beat farm fresh eggs!

Hello to everyone else! I hope you are all doing well.
