Mad March Fledglings Fly in to action 2020

Sizeablecontours · 28/02/2020 17:55

A warm welcome to the monthly thread where we (loosely) follow the Flylady housekeeping system here to combat CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) with lots of virtual wine, chat and mutual support along the way. The thread leader of the month will post a link to Flying activities daily. Quite a few of us have been on here for a while, so we may seem cliquey, but we really aren't, and all newcomers, lurkers, returnees, regulars, and intermittent regulars are very welcome!

Very simply, Flylady is a zone-based cleaning system which we follow to varying degrees, depending on our individual homes, circumstances and energy levels. There are five zones and at the beginning and the end of the month we usually straddle Zone 1 and Zone 5. When you first start decluttering, cleaning, and organizing your zones, Flylady encourages you to spend 15 minutes per day decluttering in the current zone.

Each week, we work in a different zone. Each month, we repeat all the zones. After a few months of following this system consistently, you should start to see an improvement in the main areas of your house.

Pop on to the Flylady website to have a closer look about how to get started here but signing up for emails will probably lead to very many landing in your inbox. Also there has been some concern about securely downloading pdfs from the site so proceed with caution.

The Babysteps system is a light 31-day introduction to the system which familiarises you with Flylady routines (such as dressing to shoes, shining your sink etc) and with her philosophy, which emphasises self-care, her abhorrence of perfectionism and the adage that you’re never behind - just jump in where you are at - even if you only do 5 mins work, that is so much better than doing nothing at all!

There is a morning routine and an evening routine to keep things ticking over and a weekly home cleaning hour (which most of us find tight!) to change bed sheets, mop, hoover, take out rubbish etc. We've found over the years that the system isn’t brilliant for major decluttering so you might want to supplement with Kondo or another decluttering system. Flylady doesn’t want us cleaning all day so she is very keen on using a timer. Clean and declutter with focus, then stop and do something more interesting instead!

In addition each day has a purpose, see the daily focus here:
Monday: weekly home cleaning hour (can be split into ten minute sections and spread over week)
Tuesday: plan and play (menu planning, family event planning, doc appts etc)
Wednesday: anti-procrastination day
Thursday: errand day
Friday: clear out purses, bags, cars, date night
Saturday: family fun
Sunday: lift your spirits.

Don't hesitate to ask if you have any qs. And remember, there is NO wrong or right way of doing this, it is about adapting the system to suit your life circumstances, which will be different from someone else's, so feel free to ignore any step or routine that doesn't suit you or your home! And don't be put off by the barftastically twee language of the Flylady site, as the underlying system is sound.

And if/when it all gets too much: come and take a seat by the fire in our candelit, specially adapted, virtual "naughty" corner where you can retreat and enjoy all manner of lovely things such as fluffy pillows warm blankets, fine teas, strong coffee, and platters of sumptuous foodstuffs offered with lashings of support from fellow fledglings.

There may be mention of Ned (and his cousins Ted and Fred) who started their lives as autocorrections, but who have morphed in to virtual helpers, and are borrowed by thread members from time-to-time when the going gets tough on Mount Washmore.

Most days we pop on to post our "to do" and "ta da" lists of what we’ve managed to do and have a bit of a natter. Please don't compare your list with someone else's as this is all about individual progress.

More info follows (but again, please note we advise only looking at the pdfs and not downloading them):

** launch pad (general guidance and info) here

** daily babysteps pdf (ignore the ones that don't suit you or your home) here

** week day missions (some fledglings find it easier to do them at weekends) here

** info about zones (explanation of how zones work) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/br/2017/09/02/please-explain-the-zones/

here]]

** weekly zones (a rough weekly guide to which area of the house we are tackling currently, again adapt to suit yourself) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/flying-lessons/zones/

here]] and here

** daily focus (helpful guide to allocate a certain day for a certain task) here

** deep cleaning lists pdf (only attempt when you have decluttered as you can't clean clutter!) here

Good luck and happy Flying one and all!

Oh I seeeee Tinselette Wink sorry Grin, I was incredibly a bit slow on the uptake there!!! Grin. (And have now lost pointy stiletto emoticon!)

Extra-pointy, pointy stick will have to do ----------+++++--->

I do know what you mean about productive relaxation Lane . It needs to be something that takes one "in to the zone" I think, when you can forget about everything else for a bit. I would love a place like a studio, craft/hobby room which you could shut the door on for 40 mins or so every day!

Will this do Zoo? Grin

Mad March Fledglings Fly in to action 2020
KTCluck · 08/03/2020 14:14

I can totally see why you now feel so judged by the OT Zoo. It’s a shame that she’s there to help DS and yet probably makes you struggle more. Hope you feel better soon and can get the basics done. I wish I could come and help!

Lane I get you with the proper relaxing thing. If I sit and scroll in my phone I feel I’ve had no free time at all, but if I relax ‘mindfully’ I feel so much better. Good luck with your to do list. I’d start with a few of the smallest thing to get a few ticks on it!

A stiletto would def do the job Tinselette Grin. I still have a few from my younger days which escaped the decluttering if anyone is in need!

Sorry the morning hasn’t quite gone to plan SC. I’d let those eyes close personally!

Ta da:
✅ relatives visited
✅ kitchen hoovered
✅ ironing done
✅ work clothes ready
✅ more clothes put away
✅ upstairs looking slightly less hovel-like
✅ LOL
✅ dishes done

To do:

  • Soup and overnight oats
  • check bags are packed for work / nursery

DH has taken DD to MIL’s so I’m going to sit with a cuppa before it’s time to do the roast. DH said he’ll do most of it Star

LaneBoy · 08/03/2020 14:22

Yes that’s exactly it. I was just saying to the other playgroup leader this week ask she asked about art (evidently my support worker has told all her colleagues about my drawings 😳) that it’s really the only thing where I am able to absolutely focus in a good way (sometimes especially with ADHD one can “hyperfocus” which isn’t always a good thing)

Zoo my lovely I think it may be time to consider the fact that if services see you denying that you need help, and refusing services etc, it’s actually likely to end up looking worse as they’ll label you as stubborn, oppositional, putting obstacles/barriers up etc. And you may end up judged far more harshly for that :( it shouldn’t be like that but I’d hate for you to end up being treated worse if people got the wrong impression of you :( is there anyone at all working with your family whom you could trust with this? Tell them how your past experience has scared you? Obviously not OT but maybe one of the others involved with DS, or a church person who may have experience with other families needing SS help?

Finally caved to a KFC this lunchtime. DH is up and feeling similarly crap to me so I’m just trying to get the odd bit done here and there. Will do a list when it’s a bit longer!

ChicCroissant · 08/03/2020 14:51

I hope that's the pointy stick for partners not fledglings, KT

KTCluck · 08/03/2020 15:44

Definitely unruly partners chic. We need something much gentler for demotivated fledglings. Maybe a giant feather duster?

ChicCroissant · 08/03/2020 15:53
Grin
LaneBoy · 08/03/2020 16:27

:o

Just popping on with a list while I rest.

ta da
✅LOL
✅got DS to put his laundry on
✅updated payment card on Instant Ink
✅cleaned and disinfected tuff tray (cement dust from the shop!)
✅gathered remaining board books in living room, found box, cleaned mini bookcase ready to stack later (going to have a weekly rotation so not too many out at once)
✅gathered wooden animals (6 missing still)
✅quick tidy of living room (just gathering rubbish mainly)
✅delegated a few tasks to DS like putting washing up away (his list is in progress, but I’ve written it!)
✅messaged tattoo artist about seeing options
✅emptied old bag, coat pockets and bus pass holder
✅refilled new bag etc to make sure keys and so on are in the most efficient place
✅chose printed 20 more maths sheets - will gather into workbooks later
✅cleaned easel
✅replied to assessment centre email (didn’t require much thought as I just told them what days I can’t do phone calls!)
✅thought of a few more simple weekly things to put on the control wall
✅emptied out Cagletini’s nursery bag

Despite the above the master to do list for the week is only down to 89 🤦‍♀️ but oh well, progress is progress. Also DD1’s room is full of friends which I didn’t expect, they came back from the park to shelter from the rain 🙄

ExpletiveDelighted · 08/03/2020 16:57

I definitely need the gentle feather duster treatment. Sorry for being AWOL, I have been lurking but not got round to posting (not been doing too much Flying Blush). BBL.

Sizeablecontours · 08/03/2020 19:25

Oh dear That Angry. And sorry to see more puke appearing on your list too ... . 😖

Yikes at 89 tasks on master list Lane! Shock. I think you should count task 90 as identifying all the previous ones and cross it off Grin!

Well done for being so organised for the morrow KTCluck!

Amazing lists Lane, That and KTCluck ! Star Star

Cherry waves to Chic and to everyone else!

My day went from bad to worse in rather a shameful manner Blush. Virtually no Flying achieved. ( Once I sit down its fatal nowadays I'm afraid.) Watched Netflix until we went to fetch DD from the coast and bought chips on the way back Blush. We have lunch (business) guests here tomorrow so unusually staying overnight (DD can get train very easily from here in morning) so I have done two twiggy flower arrangements and some food prep and that is all. Happily ensconced watching Crufts now. Smile

foxessocks · 08/03/2020 19:54

sc I'm very happy.to hear that you are relaxing! This is very good news!

Zoo hope you're okay you're having it so tough right now Flowers

Sorry I've missed most of you my phone battery is about to go! We've been away for the weekend (two weekends in a row - next weekend is quiet phew!) Had a great time, dc are asleep and we've just scoffed a pizza Smile

Can't believe Monday has come around again so fast though, so much to do tomorrow! Pointy sticks at the ready (but still not for zoo!)

foxessocks · 08/03/2020 19:55

lane this series of MasterChef has been fab so far, some really impressive cooks, you should watch it right now Grin

KTCluck · 08/03/2020 20:03

Lane you’ve done loads! So have you That. Sorry about the puke and fingers crossed for the extension.

It’s perfectly acceptable not to fly on a Sunday SC. However food prep and flower arranging sounds like flying to me.

Final ta Das:
✅ roast cooked, eaten and dishes washed
✅ soup made
✅ overnight oats prepped for next two days
✅ check on finances
✅ yet more clean clothes away. Where do they come from?!
✅ sleeping DD carried from the sofa, pull-up on her and tucked up in bed still in her t shirt and without having her teeth cleaned then bedroom tidied around her
✅ started counting out spare change bottle. Up to £150 with half the 5s and all the coppers still left to go (we chuck everything from 50p to pennies in).

Gone for an early night tonight. Haven’t checked bags but I think we’ll survive. Hope you’ve all had a lovely weekend fledglings.

Bowerbird5 · 08/03/2020 22:39

I don’t fly on a Sunday unless it is to make evening meal.

I went to church then to the station to pick up people. We had an extra long singing day. Dropped them back at 6pm.
Choir is what I find helps me Lane I completely switch off from stuff and can just concentrate on singing and in between when maybe it is basses turn I drift. I can recommend it. I feel tired tonight. DH cooked the meal of king prawns and salad and a potato. It was more filling than it looked. Also watched Crufts. Then Last Tango now in bed with a hot cocoa. Will catch up on thread tomorrow.

LaneBoy · 08/03/2020 22:47

ta da
✅Solihull diary
✅ACEs homework
✅ACEs diary
✅printed, laminated and hung up DD1’s timetable (can flip it over each Sunday as she has a two week schedule)
✅delegated some laundry, partly consequence for DD1 as she decided to let DS see the scary game on her phone so he is now going to sleep in our bed 🤬 so the clothes needed clearing sooner (was going to wait for the last load to dry but that can stay in until tomorrow)
✅sorted the rest of the laundry
✅some future friend stuff
✅printed regular work for DS

Throat feels icky, just going to pack Cagletini’s nursery bag and then chill I think.

Bower I have tried to pm you again tonight but no luck, it won't go through, maybe because it's too long. (Waffling as ever! Grin) I'll have another go tomorrow! But good luck for the week ahead! Flowers

Also thinking of you too Zoo Flowers

Well done on loads more tasks achieved Lane and bravo re: natural consequences! Star Star

That's an impressive amount of spare change KTCluck! We also have a tsunami of laundered clothes atm ... don't know where they come from either! Confused

This week has indeed sped by Foxes and agree this season's Masterchef seems a bit better than previous ones (have got a bit bored with smears and game lollipops, and foam and chocolate fondants though).

You've also done loads today That! A Sunday roast too! Yum! (We are having ours for tomorrow's client lunch.) Star

Very funny this evening at Crufts. A beautiful wire-haired daschund ( I am biased Wink Grin) won overall Best in Show/Champion but, overcome with excitement, had an unfortunate incident during her lap of honour in front of a bank of cameras. Fortunately, the owner took it all very much in her stride and had a poo-bag to hand Grin Grin

Thanks everyone. I do feel better overall for relaxing today although have a headache and a sore throat tonight (like you Lane). Half of our visitors came from the Lombardy region a week or so ago so who knows ... . Que sera sera and all of that. Going to start on a new "Corona quilt" (patchwork) to stop me worrying!

Keep well everyone and keep washing your hands and have a good week ahead!

OP posts:
ChicCroissant · 08/03/2020 23:46

I didn't watch Crufts but got the gist of it from FB, people commented on the quantity versus the size of the producer!

I have been lax this week, I will be needing the partner pointy stick next

Sizeablecontours · 09/03/2020 00:01
