Mad March Fledglings Fly in to action 2020

Sizeablecontours · 28/02/2020 17:55

A warm welcome to the monthly thread where we (loosely) follow the Flylady housekeeping system here to combat CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) with lots of virtual wine, chat and mutual support along the way. The thread leader of the month will post a link to Flying activities daily. Quite a few of us have been on here for a while, so we may seem cliquey, but we really aren't, and all newcomers, lurkers, returnees, regulars, and intermittent regulars are very welcome!

Very simply, Flylady is a zone-based cleaning system which we follow to varying degrees, depending on our individual homes, circumstances and energy levels. There are five zones and at the beginning and the end of the month we usually straddle Zone 1 and Zone 5. When you first start decluttering, cleaning, and organizing your zones, Flylady encourages you to spend 15 minutes per day decluttering in the current zone.

Each week, we work in a different zone. Each month, we repeat all the zones. After a few months of following this system consistently, you should start to see an improvement in the main areas of your house.

Pop on to the Flylady website to have a closer look about how to get started here but signing up for emails will probably lead to very many landing in your inbox. Also there has been some concern about securely downloading pdfs from the site so proceed with caution.

The Babysteps system is a light 31-day introduction to the system which familiarises you with Flylady routines (such as dressing to shoes, shining your sink etc) and with her philosophy, which emphasises self-care, her abhorrence of perfectionism and the adage that you’re never behind - just jump in where you are at - even if you only do 5 mins work, that is so much better than doing nothing at all!

There is a morning routine and an evening routine to keep things ticking over and a weekly home cleaning hour (which most of us find tight!) to change bed sheets, mop, hoover, take out rubbish etc. We've found over the years that the system isn’t brilliant for major decluttering so you might want to supplement with Kondo or another decluttering system. Flylady doesn’t want us cleaning all day so she is very keen on using a timer. Clean and declutter with focus, then stop and do something more interesting instead!

In addition each day has a purpose, see the daily focus here:
Monday: weekly home cleaning hour (can be split into ten minute sections and spread over week)
Tuesday: plan and play (menu planning, family event planning, doc appts etc)
Wednesday: anti-procrastination day
Thursday: errand day
Friday: clear out purses, bags, cars, date night
Saturday: family fun
Sunday: lift your spirits.

Don't hesitate to ask if you have any qs. And remember, there is NO wrong or right way of doing this, it is about adapting the system to suit your life circumstances, which will be different from someone else's, so feel free to ignore any step or routine that doesn't suit you or your home! And don't be put off by the barftastically twee language of the Flylady site, as the underlying system is sound.

And if/when it all gets too much: come and take a seat by the fire in our candelit, specially adapted, virtual "naughty" corner where you can retreat and enjoy all manner of lovely things such as fluffy pillows warm blankets, fine teas, strong coffee, and platters of sumptuous foodstuffs offered with lashings of support from fellow fledglings.

There may be mention of Ned (and his cousins Ted and Fred) who started their lives as autocorrections, but who have morphed in to virtual helpers, and are borrowed by thread members from time-to-time when the going gets tough on Mount Washmore.

Most days we pop on to post our "to do" and "ta da" lists of what we’ve managed to do and have a bit of a natter. Please don't compare your list with someone else's as this is all about individual progress.

More info follows (but again, please note we advise only looking at the pdfs and not downloading them):

** launch pad (general guidance and info) here

** daily babysteps pdf (ignore the ones that don't suit you or your home) here

** week day missions (some fledglings find it easier to do them at weekends) here

** info about zones (explanation of how zones work) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/br/2017/09/02/please-explain-the-zones/

here]]

** weekly zones (a rough weekly guide to which area of the house we are tackling currently, again adapt to suit yourself) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/flying-lessons/zones/

here]] and here

** daily focus (helpful guide to allocate a certain day for a certain task) here

** deep cleaning lists pdf (only attempt when you have decluttered as you can't clean clutter!) here

Good luck and happy Flying one and all!

Oh no 🤦‍♀️ Hope it passes quickly and doesn’t go round the entire that family :( (except DP, I think he deserves it)

Just sent DD1 to bed finally, wide awake despite her melatonin, big conversation about some very big feelings and I’m somewhat feeling like another bit of our little world just fell apart. Simultaneously feeling like a good mum (because she told me everything and trusts me and I kept calm and helpful) and a really fucking awful one.

Night all Confused

THATscurryfungeBITCH · 09/03/2020 07:49

zoo not sure if i have suggested before but would online shop be an option? Obv you probably couldnt get everything but i find it so helpful for heavy stuff e.g. bottles and tins. Most supermarkets do a cheap mid week delivery saver which is maybe £3 a month. And they tend to have offers if you not used this before. Also if you have clubcard (tesco) you can use your points x3 towards delivery pass. I am currently paying £6 a month for any time delivery with tesco, i can get same day delivery for extra £2.

I tend to get all my heavy stuff plus stuff on good offer delivered then get other bits from aldi etc as and when needed.

Baby hasnt been sick again (yet) had a bottle around 5 then a 2 hour nap. I managed half hour on sofa.

LaneBoy · 09/03/2020 08:54

ta da
✅shower, shave legs (the latter was waaaay overdue 😳)
✅remembered to put earrings in after a few days without
✅weighed self - now up to 11lb loss yay!!!

About to send DH a list of things to get after nursery run (if the small Tesco hasn’t been panic-bought to emptiness) as my throat reeeeally hurts. Squash or apple juice (to have hot with honey), jelly to microwave, crunchy-as-possible sweet chilli crisps to scratch my itchy throat :o

DS not up yet. DD1 seemed ok this morning but I’m in a bit of a blur about all of it.

Stilllivinginazoo · 09/03/2020 09:14

that fingers X he's ok now and no one else drops
Lane my legs are currently being kept warm by their fur coat but as I live and die in jeans/leggings/joggers I currently have no fucks to give on that front.. I did noticed lil zoo wolf pelt legs seriously need sorting this morning as I panic sorted the uniform from drier so they could get dressed as I got rare glimpse of them!

Tada
Crumpetty breakfast sorted(I toasted,dd2 manned the vitalite and knife.what a team!)
DS whined starving so got presented bowl cornflakes and yogurt too

LaneBoy · 09/03/2020 09:54

I’m good at doing my underarms regularly but legs naaaah. If I’d been going to the gym recently I would be more vigilant 🤣

Played piano this morning for the first time in about two months. I’m eating spicy crisps for breakfast.

Stilllivinginazoo · 09/03/2020 10:10

lane I do underarms regularly too.on this subject I need get deodorant on my travels as Nivea is making me itchy/triggering eczema...

Bath rinsed, now resting for a bit

Two things I'm pondering/looking advice
1)when do teen boys start shaving?D's has whiskery moustache(nothing thick but they are getting longer and start get spottier as he's bugger not wash face/rubbing cats all over his face..)

  1. anyone recommend a good you tube of how to start crochet please?I knit, but do so very fast which isn't particularly relaxing,so I figure something new might slow me down a bit and thought making squares/blanket to curl up in appeals and I have lots half balls or less of wool..

Also whilst on subject relaxing, does anyone else struggle to do things slowly and with intention?I even colour quickly mind racing over which colour next and panic I won't have time to finish what I've started.gawd, even writing that makes me sound bonkers!!

Cineraria · 09/03/2020 10:36

Hope you will love crochet, zoo. To me it is like cheating knitting: quicker, easier to get a more perfect or fancier looking result, more forgiving of errors, easy to try on etc. It is trickier to do while watching television though, in my opinion. I like the Crochet Guru videos on YouTube. I learnt most of the basics from a very old fashioned book but use her videos for trickier techniques and because I can never remember a particular technique to start crocheting from the centre of a block without making a hole at the centre however many times I do it!

She has a beginner course here: www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFA988387638DC7FE. She uses US rather than UK terms though, which is handy if you like using free online patterns but not if you want to use a British book of patterns you already have. The names used are the same but they mean different stitches in the US and UK, so it's extra confusing (a bit like if K2tog in US meant the same as K3tog in a UK knitting pattern)! I prefer Japanese patterns where a diagam is used rather than written names to avoid confusion.

THATscurryfungeBITCH · 09/03/2020 10:39

I have zero clues on boys shaving or crochet!

Ta da

School run and shit
Sent parcel
Checked email - extension granted Grin
Picked up bits from shop
Wash on
Dryer on

ExpletiveDelighted · 09/03/2020 10:39

Zoo - many people recommend Bella Coco for crochet tutorials. I learn better from pictures and words than videos so I found this website very useful when learning www.learn2knit.co.uk/howtocrochet.php

As for teen boys and shaving, the range for starting seems to be 13 to 16. Mine was nearly 16 and still only needs to do his tache once a week or so a few months later. He uses an electric shaver. Some of his friends were much hairier much sooner.

Sizeablecontours · 09/03/2020 11:08

Zoo you need Expletive for crochet advice; she does some amazing blankets etc and is very skilled at it.

No clue about boys and moustaches although I appear to be growing a beard of my own Grin

Well done re: yesterday's very long ta da list!

And know what you mean about doing things slowly, in a focused way. As I age I either am rushing through housework as quickly as humanly poss or doing the other extreme and sitting there doing nothing/half falling asleep. Not good. Need to start doing some painting or patchwork again.

Just having a pause while cooking for dh clients who are passing through. Nearly everything done save for setting table. Just wrote a para about it but too outing (even for me!) Grin Suffice to say circumstances are quite funny/challenging attempting "fine" (it isn't really) dining in a building site dotted about with escaped sheep and a leaking roof! Plus ça change!

Well done re: piano playing Lane! And congrats on weight loss [SC remains strangely silent on latter subject Blush ]

I do the same with on-line shopping That buy all the heavy boring stuff (bog roll, laundry detergent, shampoo, tins, frozen stuff) on-line and flit about on foot buying fresh, meat, fruit, veg, eggs etc. Makes life much easier (but perhaps less so if you have allergies/intolerances etc?)

Hope baby ds through the worst and that lurgy doesn't spread further That and that you get a better night's sleep tonight. It's certainly been a long winter.

Had better go. Guests arriving in 20. Wish me luck!

Stilllivinginazoo · 09/03/2020 12:40

Tada.1hr 15 walk to outreach school with D's then I staggered to wool shop..
Sqweeeeee.like step back in time.i spent indecent amount on patterns with huge nostalgic value and a natty waistcoat I think D's will like, plus couldn't resist few little balls for my crochet practise.they only sell with cash so had ask locally for ATM as garage one wasn't working .bought mood up though,so I don't care
DS due out in 5mins,I just sit wall waiting then slow walk home pop b+m as passing and need grab littertray disinfectant from let's at home as we pass that too

LaneBoy · 09/03/2020 17:06

So glad you got to enjoy the wool shop zoo! I can’t do yarn things at all.

DS has found a flute I’d impulsively bought in a charity shop ages ago. He can get a better sound out of it than I ever managed! He’s said he wants to learn so DH has ordered a beginner book.

Didn’t have planned English lesson with his friend as said friend is ill.

ta da
✅chess club with DS
✅short swim!!! Was just going to use steam room while friend swam, but felt ridiculously anxious beforehand. Decided a swim may help use up the adrenaline. Correct! Felt so much less anxious very quickly. I do ache a lot now.
✅set up tuff tray for Cagletini while she slept. Want to have something ready for her when she wakes up from her nap each day as she gets bored otherwise and either trashes the living room or screams until we put baconface on.

Stilllivinginazoo · 09/03/2020 17:56

lane fab for the swim and yay for organising something to avoid bacon face!!

Tada
Pop to get littertray spray at pets at home
Picked up couple bits b+m I needed
Got back at 220
Sat bum for a bit as back /hips were killing me
Made D's n I snack/lunch(tuna rice cakes)
Put some shop away
Pop local boots when DD got in (15 mins walk) as she needed gaviscon advance.
Straight off pick up lil zoo from art club at school trailing D's and v anxious dd2
Got in 530 to string messages "d"p he had been view flat/room today and as hasn't been in new job won't accept him.he will be homeless end of month.was ranting like it's all my fault.i suggested speaking previous landlord whom he was with a year and has multiple properties as he was reliable tenant and he refused and started catastrophizing saying be living in car til July as that when he been at this job long enough get a place.turned off my phone for a bit.i don't need any more stress in my life
DS in state saying school was still horrid and hates it.didnt do work, wrote on paper as he left "I've not done work as too anxious"
Dd2 been in state all day and reflux is playing up everytime tries eat
Lil zoo cold/throats worse and she's in a grump

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 09/03/2020 20:55

Oh zoo, I wish we could take some of the stress away for you. You don't need DP making anything else your problem at this point.

I am slinking back into the naughty corner as I have let DH do all the flying since Thursday... My asthma is completely out of control, so I'm wiped out with the jobs I've been doing and not sleeping properly. 3 afternoons running I've fallen asleep in the chair trying to get writing done on the laptop.

Hey ho. Phone call with GP tomorrow, hoping for steroids to knock the cough on the head for this year. They won't see anyone with respiratory symptoms, in case it's Covid-19. The upside of steroids (?) is that they make me totally manic, so I'll get loads done for 5 days.

🍒🙋 to everyone as my brain won't go and I'm off to bed.

Bowerbird5 · 10/03/2020 00:53

Hi,
Sorry baby has been sick that hope ok tonight.

Zoo he is really trying isn’t he. That is a perfectly good idea re landlord.
Crochet - blankets you only need to know about three stitches basic chain double and treble UK to make squares for a blanket. Once you get it you can go quite fast.
Baby blankets can be done in rows of double. My sister used to make them with rows of pastels or rows of brights.
SC bless you more cooking for more visitors.

Lane wow that is brilliant weight loss. I loss some end of last year but put it back on as comfort eating now. Need to stop and lose some.

So ta Das
S&S
Vacuum downstairs
Did shelf unit on Saturday in kitchen and changed and rearranged things on it. Wiped each shelf and each thing.
Made bed and actually dressed to shoes today.
Made meal for friend and I and reheated cottage pie for DH.

I went outside today. It was really cold but I needed to measure new coal bunker / wood store. I felt a bit warmer so stayed out in greenhouse and repotted three pots with polyanthus ( dark red, terracotta and bright pink)and dark purple pansies. Three large pots for the front. Think I might do a small hanging basket tomorrow. Felt better.
Made phone call.
