Mad March Fledglings Fly in to action 2020

Sizeablecontours · 28/02/2020 17:55

A warm welcome to the monthly thread where we (loosely) follow the Flylady housekeeping system here to combat CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) with lots of virtual wine, chat and mutual support along the way. The thread leader of the month will post a link to Flying activities daily. Quite a few of us have been on here for a while, so we may seem cliquey, but we really aren't, and all newcomers, lurkers, returnees, regulars, and intermittent regulars are very welcome!

Very simply, Flylady is a zone-based cleaning system which we follow to varying degrees, depending on our individual homes, circumstances and energy levels. There are five zones and at the beginning and the end of the month we usually straddle Zone 1 and Zone 5. When you first start decluttering, cleaning, and organizing your zones, Flylady encourages you to spend 15 minutes per day decluttering in the current zone.

Each week, we work in a different zone. Each month, we repeat all the zones. After a few months of following this system consistently, you should start to see an improvement in the main areas of your house.

Pop on to the Flylady website to have a closer look about how to get started here but signing up for emails will probably lead to very many landing in your inbox. Also there has been some concern about securely downloading pdfs from the site so proceed with caution.

The Babysteps system is a light 31-day introduction to the system which familiarises you with Flylady routines (such as dressing to shoes, shining your sink etc) and with her philosophy, which emphasises self-care, her abhorrence of perfectionism and the adage that you’re never behind - just jump in where you are at - even if you only do 5 mins work, that is so much better than doing nothing at all!

There is a morning routine and an evening routine to keep things ticking over and a weekly home cleaning hour (which most of us find tight!) to change bed sheets, mop, hoover, take out rubbish etc. We've found over the years that the system isn’t brilliant for major decluttering so you might want to supplement with Kondo or another decluttering system. Flylady doesn’t want us cleaning all day so she is very keen on using a timer. Clean and declutter with focus, then stop and do something more interesting instead!

In addition each day has a purpose, see the daily focus here:
Monday: weekly home cleaning hour (can be split into ten minute sections and spread over week)
Tuesday: plan and play (menu planning, family event planning, doc appts etc)
Wednesday: anti-procrastination day
Thursday: errand day
Friday: clear out purses, bags, cars, date night
Saturday: family fun
Sunday: lift your spirits.

Don't hesitate to ask if you have any qs. And remember, there is NO wrong or right way of doing this, it is about adapting the system to suit your life circumstances, which will be different from someone else's, so feel free to ignore any step or routine that doesn't suit you or your home! And don't be put off by the barftastically twee language of the Flylady site, as the underlying system is sound.

And if/when it all gets too much: come and take a seat by the fire in our candelit, specially adapted, virtual "naughty" corner where you can retreat and enjoy all manner of lovely things such as fluffy pillows warm blankets, fine teas, strong coffee, and platters of sumptuous foodstuffs offered with lashings of support from fellow fledglings.

There may be mention of Ned (and his cousins Ted and Fred) who started their lives as autocorrections, but who have morphed in to virtual helpers, and are borrowed by thread members from time-to-time when the going gets tough on Mount Washmore.

Most days we pop on to post our "to do" and "ta da" lists of what we’ve managed to do and have a bit of a natter. Please don't compare your list with someone else's as this is all about individual progress.

More info follows (but again, please note we advise only looking at the pdfs and not downloading them):

** launch pad (general guidance and info) here

** daily babysteps pdf (ignore the ones that don't suit you or your home) here

** week day missions (some fledglings find it easier to do them at weekends) here

** info about zones (explanation of how zones work) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/br/2017/09/02/please-explain-the-zones/

here]]

** weekly zones (a rough weekly guide to which area of the house we are tackling currently, again adapt to suit yourself) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/flying-lessons/zones/

here]] and here

** daily focus (helpful guide to allocate a certain day for a certain task) here

** deep cleaning lists pdf (only attempt when you have decluttered as you can't clean clutter!) here

Good luck and happy Flying one and all!

I had just thought about Easter yesterday. We always get with ILS and hide the eggs for the DC, or in our case now DD helps hide so MIL and DS can find them! 🤣

It's going to be very different this year, not being able to be with them. I will get my Easter decor out sometime this week, but want to clean surfaces first.

I was thinking about Easter yesterday. My DGM likes to do an egg hunt for the DC. Do you think it would be ok for her to do one in her garden and for us to to take them along so she can watch them from inside?

Lisette1940 · 29/03/2020 06:52

Morning all

Sizeablecontours · 29/03/2020 07:45

Good morning all!

Aye Expletive/Hazel/Givemeacall/Lane it's certainly going to be a very different Easter this year Sad, especially for Fledglings with little ones and grandparents. Maybe the next fortnight could be used to do some Easter crafts/or as Lane suggests, prep some treasure hunt clues? It will certainly be a memorable one anyway!

Not going to all the Holy Week masses at church is going to be very strange indeed ... .

Your dinner does indeed sound lovely Bower but shame about the missing Easter egg!! Keep well and hopefully being out in the garden will help your chest, although it is meant to be getting colder again so wrap up warm! Well done re: table re-arranging too! Very funny that the cat noticed! Grin And agree with pots, that you should never assume they are dead, as something very often emerges from them again in the spring Grin And yes, dh is feeling very needed atm too Wink

Your Sunday dinner sounded lovely too Expletive! Yum! And it will be lovely to be have fresh strawberries eventually! And whoo hoo to new wm!

I'm with you wrt scented candles, air freshners, fabric conditioners etc. I have to sprint past those aisles in the supermarket as I find the fragrance too strong! Thankfully daschunds don't whiff very much but I'm not averse to the faint scent of Dettol in the air if I have to clean up after them! Grin

Givemeacall good luck with your big clean today! Love the photo of your ds1 btw Grin

Foxes well done wrt sock and tight decluttering Star! And good of the dc to lend an air of normality to Face Time chats Wink Grin

We3kings Hope your awful headache has totally gone now. Sounds like a lovely idea with the Easter egg hunt through the window. I'll leave it to everyone else to advise though because I'm not sure of the UK rules, but it wouldn't fall under "necessary" category here sadly as we are not meant to go anywhere except work, or shopping for food/medicine or exercise. Would Easter egg hunt qualify as latter? Not sure?

You are doing brilliantly wrt home edding btw despite the mixed reviews from your pupils Wink Star Grin And hope you got the washing up done eventually!

That I like the sound of your clear no-nonsense rules! Star Brew You are doing brilliantly too! Star

Great to hear you are all well Lisette Flowers.

Hazel how is your ddog now? I hope he is ok? It's so awful when they are in pain Sad
All of this isolation is very testing for teens! Hope you managed to get everyone out on a family walk yesterday! And that you got your bulbs planted!

Hazel/Lane Yes, I think Germany's lower death rate has been attributed to very dedicated testing as well as a younger population.

Givemeacall I think there is growing awareness of some parents needing to shop with little ones so I hope you don't have any problems with it. The last thing you need is extra worry right now Flowers

Glad you are on the mend Lane Flowers Nursery rhymes on the recorder took me back Grin And quite a significant moment for you all with your dsd moving out, you sound like such a lovely sm Flowers I hope your dsd enjoys her new space and that you enjoy having a bit more too!

Eggs are like gold dust here too Zoo! Well done for starting on your room Star Star Star

Bower/Zoo Yes, it is amazing how the threat of having to hoover the stairs suddenly makes dc leap in to action doing something else! Grin

What a strange "holiday" for you KTCluck! I hope you can enjoy it.
Well done re: your "burst of energy"-clea Star Personally, I find bursts of energy don't come along as often as they did, so it's always good to profit from them Wink

Willow hope some time away from sm gave you the headspace you needed and that you got the beds changed! (We always do family bed changing at weekends.)

I'm sure I must have missed someone but mahoosive waves to Foxes Toostressy Cineraria Honu Chic Shannara and everyone else!

Here's the [[http://www.flylady.net/d/zones/detailed-cleaning-zone-5/

After yesterday's madness/"family fun" ... a bit of calm/spirituality for a Sunday ... .

Here's His Holiness the Dalai Lama offering some very practical and down-to-earth tips on peace of mind/keeping anxiety at bay : .

For the little ones, I thought a "thanking tree" (normally for thanksgiving; but good at any time especially now!) might be good, in order to remind us to count our blessings here, courtesy of Craftionary. Toddlers could do an easier version!

You can't beat Psalm 23 "The Lord is My Shepherd" in dark times. Here is Howard Goodall's arrangement: .

And finally, here is my favourite "Madonna del Latte" (of which there are thousands of course) by Bergonone which I love for it's beauty and realism and calm : here

Have a good Sunday everyone! Remember to do something to lift your spirits today!

Morning all

A friend lost a relative to the virus overnight. That makes things seem more real. I had been wondering how long until it was someone we knew Sad

I have two online shops booked in, one this week and one two weeks after so hopefully we will manage food wise.

We keep struggling to get formula for the baby though. None in stock online so keep having to get people to look in actual shops.

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 29/03/2020 09:35

The formula thing has made me really angry. People are buying it to put in their cuppa when they run out of milk FGS. Who is that selfish?

Lisette1940 · 29/03/2020 09:36

I'm living in zone 5 so I'd better clean it. That I'm so sorry you are having difficulties getting formula.

Lisette1940 · 29/03/2020 09:37

I'd heard that we3 - unbellieeevaablle.

Lisette1940 · 29/03/2020 09:38

Sorry about your friend's relative that - so sad.

Bowerbird5 · 29/03/2020 09:42

SC Thank you for those links. The Dalai Lama is looking well. I was lucky enough to met him briefly quite a few years ago. He had an unreported visit to the Buddhist Temple at Eskdalemuir in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 and we were on a school trip ( which someone was supposed to postpone and forgot) so we were allowed to watch him arrive. Unfortunately we were not allowed to take a photo or speak to him however he walked right up to me and my group and asked me several questions. I felt quite honoured and his aids looked surprised. I taught Buddhism for quite a number of years and if I wasn’t Catholic I think I would chose Buddhism it is a very gentle religion. The last group I took had studied more deeply than usual as I had taught them for three years. Two years was Buddhism and Christianity and our guide said they were the most knowledgeable group she had ever taken and they ask the most interesting questions. They were also fantastically behaved and very respectful I was quite proud of them.
The Oxford choir were wonderful. It made me think of the young man at church who has just gone to Oxford. It is such a shame that his first year has been interrupted and I wonder if he got home safely.
The detail in the painting is fantastic I haven’t seen thar work before so thank you.

The meal last night was lovely and I didn’t have to think about it like I have been doing because I was rationing food. We were getting a bit low especially veg. I discovered someone has started a baking thread if any of you are interested. I haven’t ventured around the site much until yesterday. I was staying off the internet for a bit just popping in here occasionally but I feel better this week so have had a bit of a look. I was just thinking about a baking thread when I discovered someone beat me to it. Some have put recipes on and there are photos. Some unusual ones too that some of you may like to try if you have the ingredients. I think people in this corner will cope better than lots of others on mumsnet.
I didn’t get any of the boudoir done yesterday due to the moving of furniture and I keep Sunday’s for rest so may do a little like the dusting and put away some clothing.

THATscurryfungeBITCH · 29/03/2020 09:46

I hadnt heard that about formula Shock fucking idiots! I am grateful ds is over 6 months now as atleast i can give food as well. Those with smaller babies dont have the option Sad

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 29/03/2020 09:54

Also I know SC it's not really necessary is it so we shouldn't do it ☹️ I just feel so bad for her being all alone and she sees the DC at least 3 days a week normally so I know she'll be missing them like mad. We've been FaceTiming.

Has anyone else got snow this morning?

Sizeablecontours · 29/03/2020 09:57

Really sorry to hear that That Flowers. I hope you can find formula soon.

We heard of a work contact of a colleague who died two day's ago. I agree it feels like it is getting closer. As an Italian medical professor on Newscast said the other day "it feels very far away... until it isn't". Sad

What we can't do obviously is sit and shiver and do nothing and allow ourselves to become pole-axed at the thought of a potential serious threat to come, but at the same time, it's very difficult to switch mentally between the two modes of "oh let's go and pair the socks and count the tins of tomatoes" to "shite, we're in the middle of a global pandemic". It's very hard to get your head around.

OP posts:
Bowerbird5 · 29/03/2020 10:02

So sorry to hear about your friend’s relative That

That is awful about formula I thought it was mums hoarding it. There has been a shortage of alternative milks too and I think a lot of people are buying that because it is long life. DH tried to get some at a local supermarket two weeks ago and was only allowed one of each item so bought one almond and one oat which lasted me about two weeks but meant I had to forego cereal sometimes and I really wanted a hot chocolate one day but knew I couldn’t. So selfish of them. Buying formula is unbelievable who does that sort of thing. Really awful for bottle fed new borns. Wow could you imagine how stressful that would be for a new mum. I hope you get some soon. Could you contact the manufacturer?

Lisette good to hear from you and glad the family are all ok.

The weather has changed back to cold. We are having Roast Lamb for Sunday dinner. BF loves lamb and I looked at it and thought I would invite them then realised I couldn’t 😕 we will have plenty for days and we put the rest of the meat in the freezer. Going to divide the loaf up today and put a few slices in freezer bags so easy to defrost. My dad used to make sandwiches and freeze them for the pub then toast them. Ham and sardine are the only ones I can remember. They went down a treat and meant he wasn’t away from the bar for long. The sardine ones were very popular but then it was a fishing village when we went there. They did half net salmon fishing and a few villages nearby still had family fishing boats for haddock and cod. The next village on the coast lost a boat with three generations on that was a sad, sad day.

Bowerbird5 · 29/03/2020 10:10

Gets up to look.

Nope. No snow.
Snuggles back in but propped up as DH brought me a cup of tea and should be cool enough to drink now.

SC that is why I had to come off the internet I was getting upset and panicky. The sunshine was a blessing and I have been feeling so much better being outside working in the garden. I have one solitary pink hyacinth and I just think it looks so beautiful in the bed of perennials many who are yet to emerge. The bark we put down last year makes it stand out even more. It is my little flower of hope.

Sizeablecontours · 29/03/2020 10:12

We3kings blimey, I didnt know that about people buying formula to put in their tea! Shock. That's awful.

That sounds so hard for your dm, I'm really sorry Sad Flowers. No snow here, still sunny, but getting chillier!

And yes Bower I think it is really hard for uni students, especially those in their first and last years. The ones who have just started, haven't had a huge amount of time to make friends and get established, before they find themselves back at home with parents. And obviously, the ones doing finals must be distraught.

Ooh I love Eskdalemuir and know the area really well! Strange to think of the Dalai Lama there, but very jealous that you have met him. I'm a huge fan! And personally think Ecumenism is the way forward... .

I'll have a snoop at baking thread; thanks for heads up!

Lisette Grin

Smile at your little flower of hope Bower! All the green shoots coming up and the tiny daffs do lift the spirits I agree.

Also agree that lots of threads on here are to be avoided currently. (But remain v grateful for "our" tiny corner of the site!)

Sorry to hear that that Sad

Stilllivinginazoo · 29/03/2020 11:14

that Flowers
SC scary but true words,it's weird but I fell calmed a little knowing my anxiety is shared and it's not just my own mind driving me to the edge(years living huge anxiety issues,so maybe I'm in the minority.im still anxious AF)

I heard if you need formula pharmacy can order in for you

We having same problems try get lil zoo df milks.she won't drink coconut, which only one I've found...I really hope those pinching other groups milks find it tastes beyond revoltingAngry

We3 no snow here, cold AF but sunny/cloudy.very very windy though.

I've not step foot out if house even into garden in over 48 hrs.as a teen I had agoraphobia as part anxiety and I reaching point don't want step out again.bugger bugger bugger...

In other news....nothing
Motivations has cleared off to self isolate, poss with Ned and ted??

THATscurryfungeBITCH · 29/03/2020 11:15

We do have half a box of formula and fingers crossed someone is picking me one up today. A box lasts less than a week here due to 6/7 - 9oz bottles a day! Have increased solids but he still wants ALL the milk! 🐷

One of the older dc is CMPI so we also need soya milk but i tend to buy a few at a time anyway when its on 2 for £2 (dc will not accept any shop own brand)

No snow here. Bright and sunny.

THATscurryfungeBITCH · 29/03/2020 11:17

zoo i last got soya milk at iceland if you have one nearby might be worth a try

Sizeablecontours · 29/03/2020 11:18

We3kings btw I hope my answer earlier didn't seem overly harsh; that wasn't how I was hearing it in my head ifyswim Smile. As mentioned, I am not altogether on top of UK restrictions which may vary subtlety to here?

It's a really difficult thing this; judging what is"necessary" and what is not. Especially, as confinement goes on. The well-being of the elderly is very important. As is the mh of those who don't deal well in isolation.

There's a similar dilemma on another thread. Should a lonely 24 year old who is living in a cramped house-share in London and whose work has closed, be fetched home by car by her df in Yorkshire if strict hygiene precautions are taken and she self isolates on return?

Most people are saying "yes go and fetch her, why are you hesitating?" but a few are saying "it's fine for you as a single family to go and get her, but what if every family decided to make those journeys to gather up lonely relatives, then everyone would be criss-crossing the country which obviously isn't ideal."

It's really hard to know what to do for the best - everyone must make their own decisions - but I would personally err upon the side of extreme caution at this most critical time, harsh though that sounds Flowers

Right, must go and walk our youngest furry as she is crossing her paws.
BBL everyone!
