Mad March Fledglings Fly in to action 2020

A warm welcome to the monthly thread where we (loosely) follow the Flylady housekeeping system here to combat CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) with lots of virtual wine, chat and mutual support along the way. The thread leader of the month will post a link to Flying activities daily. Quite a few of us have been on here for a while, so we may seem cliquey, but we really aren't, and all newcomers, lurkers, returnees, regulars, and intermittent regulars are very welcome!

Very simply, Flylady is a zone-based cleaning system which we follow to varying degrees, depending on our individual homes, circumstances and energy levels. There are five zones and at the beginning and the end of the month we usually straddle Zone 1 and Zone 5. When you first start decluttering, cleaning, and organizing your zones, Flylady encourages you to spend 15 minutes per day decluttering in the current zone.

Each week, we work in a different zone. Each month, we repeat all the zones. After a few months of following this system consistently, you should start to see an improvement in the main areas of your house.

Pop on to the Flylady website to have a closer look about how to get started here but signing up for emails will probably lead to very many landing in your inbox. Also there has been some concern about securely downloading pdfs from the site so proceed with caution.

The Babysteps system is a light 31-day introduction to the system which familiarises you with Flylady routines (such as dressing to shoes, shining your sink etc) and with her philosophy, which emphasises self-care, her abhorrence of perfectionism and the adage that you’re never behind - just jump in where you are at - even if you only do 5 mins work, that is so much better than doing nothing at all!

There is a morning routine and an evening routine to keep things ticking over and a weekly home cleaning hour (which most of us find tight!) to change bed sheets, mop, hoover, take out rubbish etc. We've found over the years that the system isn’t brilliant for major decluttering so you might want to supplement with Kondo or another decluttering system. Flylady doesn’t want us cleaning all day so she is very keen on using a timer. Clean and declutter with focus, then stop and do something more interesting instead!

In addition each day has a purpose, see the daily focus here:
Monday: weekly home cleaning hour (can be split into ten minute sections and spread over week)
Tuesday: plan and play (menu planning, family event planning, doc appts etc)
Wednesday: anti-procrastination day
Thursday: errand day
Friday: clear out purses, bags, cars, date night
Saturday: family fun
Sunday: lift your spirits.

Don't hesitate to ask if you have any qs. And remember, there is NO wrong or right way of doing this, it is about adapting the system to suit your life circumstances, which will be different from someone else's, so feel free to ignore any step or routine that doesn't suit you or your home! And don't be put off by the barftastically twee language of the Flylady site, as the underlying system is sound.

And if/when it all gets too much: come and take a seat by the fire in our candelit, specially adapted, virtual "naughty" corner where you can retreat and enjoy all manner of lovely things such as fluffy pillows warm blankets, fine teas, strong coffee, and platters of sumptuous foodstuffs offered with lashings of support from fellow fledglings.

There may be mention of Ned (and his cousins Ted and Fred) who started their lives as autocorrections, but who have morphed in to virtual helpers, and are borrowed by thread members from time-to-time when the going gets tough on Mount Washmore.

Most days we pop on to post our "to do" and "ta da" lists of what we’ve managed to do and have a bit of a natter. Please don't compare your list with someone else's as this is all about individual progress.

More info follows (but again, please note we advise only looking at the pdfs and not downloading them):

** launch pad (general guidance and info) here

** daily babysteps pdf (ignore the ones that don't suit you or your home) here

** week day missions (some fledglings find it easier to do them at weekends) here

** info about zones (explanation of how zones work) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/br/2017/09/02/please-explain-the-zones/

here]]

** weekly zones (a rough weekly guide to which area of the house we are tackling currently, again adapt to suit yourself) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/flying-lessons/zones/

here]] and here

** daily focus (helpful guide to allocate a certain day for a certain task) here

** deep cleaning lists pdf (only attempt when you have decluttered as you can't clean clutter!) here

Good luck and happy Flying one and all!

x posts

Fingers crossed formula gets delivered to you That!

And that you both find alternative milk for your older DC That and Zoo!

FlowersFlowersFlowersZoo try not to worry, you are definitely not alone ; we are all anxious! You are doing a great job with your brood despite your anxieties. And I think many of us are finding supermarket trips a bit of an ordeal currently, so that's an entirely natural reaction FlowersFlowersFlowers

Right now, I would love to have dh's laser focus and ability to shut everything else out that is going on around me and compartmentalise tbh!

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 29/03/2020 12:22

No it didn't sound harsh at all SC you just said what I was already thinking tbh.

We use oatly barista for youngest who had allergies and I've actually found it easier to get hold of than usual.

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 29/03/2020 12:23

Has allergies that should say. And obviously atm easier for others to get for us 🙄

LaneBoy · 29/03/2020 13:20

Brief flurry here too! Sky is beautifully blue again now though.

Just had tomato soup (from a can, I didn’t make it) with a slice of cheese on seed toast. Proper comfort food :)

Stilllivinginazoo · 29/03/2020 14:15

SC thanks I cried at that.bloody hell hormones!!
That nearest Iceland a good 45 minute walk sadly...downside to Waitrose being our nearest shop(on row with heron foods and Asda about 5mins diwn, but a small one)
Lots trendies drink alternative milks without knobs stockpilinglil zoo won't drink Asda own(or Aldi, although tbh I try Aldi and it tastes lumpy!!)

Wish we had snow!!

I've managed cricket a stripy square.debating whether try one big one/blanket as I need focus on something as strong urge lay and close eyes under a blanketSad

Little ones had tuna wraps with carrot sticks for lunch.ive got last veg sausages, oven chips and a little frozen broccoli in oven for dd2 and me.we got up late(I CBA) and so meals behind time but it's not like we need be anywhere do doesn't matter

Hoping a school day, with routines of homeschool for the girls/try manage D's homeschool and flyladt home blessing etc will give me structure

I've realised my only normal social contact is at shops converse staff...dd2 and I generally text,I text mum if 10 sometimes, but she's got enough on her plate.she works nights at Asda restock shelves 3x a week, has 6still at home, hard when shop with current restrictions on how much you can have(plus her and dh) and she's go be a grandma in August so obvs worrying about son and daughter in law and if will be allowed see previous new bundle then...

Sizeablecontours · 29/03/2020 16:00

Ach, no worries Zoo Smile ; it's a very discombobulating time for everyone! Your friend sounds amazing working nights with 10 DC!
Enjoy the crocheting! (I am enjoying a sneaky half hour in the boudoir supposedly tidying while dh has a nap and DD writes a history essay, but I am really watching Jamie cooking on the telly Blush. Like his recipes but yuurgh, really dislike the way he has his fingers in everything Envy

LaneBoy · 29/03/2020 16:26

He needs to socially distance from his food! :o

ta da
✅walked outside!!! Less than 10 minutes but still further than I thought I’d manage. I left with DH and the younger two, thought I’d turn back at the gate to the street (makes us sound posh, it’s really not 😂) but felt ok, and did about three times the planned distance in the end. Been on the sofa since though.

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 29/03/2020 16:38

Productive-ish day here DH and DC pitched in
✔️ S&S
✔️ ironing
✔️ LOL
✔️ cleaned all windows
✔️ changed all beds
✔️ hoovered and mopped even pulled all the furniture out in the living room and did under the sofa cushions

We've also baked a vegan chocolate cake and managed to fit in a few Disney films. Peter Pan, lady and the tramp, 101 dogs (can't spell it 😂) and now the sword in the stone.

LaneBoy · 29/03/2020 16:54

101 dogs :o

Sword in the Stone is THE BEST!!! Archimedes the owl is one of my favourite Disney characters ever and it’s one of the films I watched endlessly as a kid - I can still remember the adverts as my dad had recorded it off telly one Christmas 😳 along with the Robin Hood with the fox!

I need some Disney nostalgia now. We have all the classics on DVD but they don’t get any airtime now the kids are older - just hope the toddler will like them too!

Lisette1940 · 29/03/2020 17:07

Twas a day of tech glitches with Google classroom and the uploading of homework. I found two work around so I'm pleased with myself but there was much gnashing of teeth at the screen. Sorted out now but took hours to work out. Sigh.

I'm still in my pajamas bit we've been fed and no-one is dead.

I was just thinking how much I liked supermarket shopping - now it seems more fraught - distancing and going in with a strict list and getting out again.

I am more anxious in general too like everyone.

Going to do a quick swish and swipe.

Lisette1940 · 29/03/2020 17:08

Sorry message a bit garbled due to autocorrect

Apparently there was lots of formula in supermarket today! I was brought two boxes Smile part of me wonders if this is stockpiling Confused but most of me is just content we have two weeks of milk.

Ty for the kind offer giveme Flowers

I am so not flying these days.

Sizeablecontours · 29/03/2020 18:18

Grin Lane he really does! Grin Whey hey to walking outside!

swept out detritus from under boudoir bed (oh the shame Blush
wrote a thank you e-mail

KTCluck · 29/03/2020 18:23

Glad you found some formula That, what a relief!

It’s scary and so sad hearing of people you know of dying Flowers

We haven’t made it out of our pjs today Blush. Disney+ and toys have been the order of the day. We watched toy story 4 and coco for the first time. Cried at them both! Coco is fab if anyone hasn’t seen it.

Minimal flying:
✅ dishes from breakfast, dinner and an early tea (lamb casserole, yum) all done straight away.
✅ LOL x 2
✅ benches, hob, table and cupboard fronts wiped
✅ quick hoover downstairs

No exercise or fresh air, but we’ve decided lockdown weekends will be laid back while weekdays we’ll aim to be up and dressed by 8am, and stay as active as possible.

LaneBoy · 29/03/2020 18:24

I really don’t think 2 weeks worth is stockpiling tbh, so glad they had some!

Lisette one of the things on my “stuff I’m looking forward to after lockdown” list is “go to the supermarket and choose whatever the hell we want for dinner” - must admit I totally took that for granted before.

Managed a little more time on the exercise bike just now. Am full of headache and still anxious that somehow my lungs will end up suffering in the next week or so - I’m day 12 now so really it should be ok, but I’m still anxious! However I seem to be getting a bit stronger and feeling a little less sick/tired each day :)

foxessocks · 29/03/2020 19:09

Yay for formula that! Phew!

Lane I agree, I took it for granted and did so many top up shops just whenever I was near a shop I'd grab a few bits. Now we are trying to get to at least a whole week before going again so it's really important we write a proper list!

foxessocks · 29/03/2020 19:10

Also glad you are feeling better!

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 29/03/2020 19:47

hello, it's a bit late in the day. I've had almost 2 full days (mostly) off social media and feel better for it. Lane, glad you are feeling better and got outside for a bit. That, so sorry to hear of your friend's loss. Brings it all a bit close to home. Big wing flaps to everyone who is managing to get any flying done at all at the this very peculiar time.

This weekend I have concentrated on getting my April bullet journal set up (it turns out I can draw blosson, as long as it is geometric), which was relatively quick as everything is cancelled! I've been watching some rubbish tv on you (The 1940s House, which it turns out is 20 years old, if anyone remembers it!) and menu planning / batch cooking. I made Mary Berry's mincemeat cake today with apples instead of extra sultanas, for pudding at tea time; I can see I'm going to have to lock the second half in a box somewhere. "Keeps for a week wrapped tightly in clingfilm" my elbow! 😂 It'll be gone by the end of elevenses tomorrow.
Now I shall retire back into the end of my tv programme in advance of the world starting again at 8am tomorrow.

LaneBoy · 29/03/2020 20:48

I’m super jealous of all this baking. I would actually kill for some cake right now.

In entirely unrelated news, I have my appetite back :o

HungryHazelEyes · 29/03/2020 20:54

SC unfortunately ddog is not doing so well still. She thinks she can do normal things, like running, but then is in pain right after. Doesn't matter how much we tell her to slow down, she doesn't listen. She's currently laying on the couch with me. It's so hard for me to do things right now as she only wants me to lay by her or she doesn't settle Sad

I didn't get my bulbs in the ground like I wanted. The weather is being unpredictable (as per usual), so I'm not wanting to be working outside in it.

We did manage to go out for a walk, discovered ddog really needs to stay home though, no matter how much she wants to come. She was crying she was in so much pain after not going out for very long. Had to carry her for most of it. Felt bad.

I went grocery shopping today for our weekly shop and was shocked at how close people were getting to each other. It's not community spread yet here, and only 1 person in our county, but still!

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 29/03/2020 22:01

I'm so sorry Hazel, it's so hard to watch a pet in pain.
