A warm welcome to the monthly thread where we (loosely) follow the Flylady housekeeping system here to combat CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) with lots of virtual wine, chat and mutual support along the way. The thread leader of the month will post a link to Flying activities daily. Quite a few of us have been on here for a while, so we may seem cliquey, but we really aren't, and all newcomers, lurkers, returnees, regulars, and intermittent regulars are very welcome!

Very simply, Flylady is a zone-based cleaning system which we follow to varying degrees, depending on our individual homes, circumstances and energy levels. There are five zones and at the beginning and the end of the month we usually straddle Zone 1 and Zone 5. When you first start decluttering, cleaning, and organizing your zones, Flylady encourages you to spend 15 minutes per day decluttering in the current zone.

Each week, we work in a different zone. Each month, we repeat all the zones. After a few months of following this system consistently, you should start to see an improvement in the main areas of your house.

Pop on to the Flylady website to have a closer look about how to get started here but signing up for emails will probably lead to very many landing in your inbox. Also there has been some concern about securely downloading pdfs from the site so proceed with caution.

The Babysteps system is a light 31-day introduction to the system which familiarises you with Flylady routines (such as dressing to shoes, shining your sink etc) and with her philosophy, which emphasises self-care, her abhorrence of perfectionism and the adage that you’re never behind - just jump in where you are at - even if you only do 5 mins work, that is so much better than doing nothing at all!

There is a morning routine and an evening routine to keep things ticking over and a weekly home cleaning hour (which most of us find tight!) to change bed sheets, mop, hoover, take out rubbish etc. We've found over the years that the system isn’t brilliant for major decluttering so you might want to supplement with Kondo or another decluttering system. Flylady doesn’t want us cleaning all day so she is very keen on using a timer. Clean and declutter with focus, then stop and do something more interesting instead!

In addition each day has a purpose, see the daily focus here:
Monday: weekly home cleaning hour (can be split into ten minute sections and spread over week)
Tuesday: plan and play (menu planning, family event planning, doc appts etc)
Wednesday: anti-procrastination day
Thursday: errand day
Friday: clear out purses, bags, cars, date night
Saturday: family fun
Sunday: lift your spirits.

Don't hesitate to ask if you have any qs. And remember, there is NO wrong or right way of doing this, it is about adapting the system to suit your life circumstances, which will be different from someone else's, so feel free to ignore any step or routine that doesn't suit you or your home! And don't be put off by the barftastically twee language of the Flylady site, as the underlying system is sound.

And if/when it all gets too much: come and take a seat by the fire in our candelit, specially adapted, virtual "naughty" corner where you can retreat and enjoy all manner of lovely things such as fluffy pillows warm blankets, fine teas, strong coffee, and platters of sumptuous foodstuffs offered with lashings of support from fellow fledglings.

There may be mention of Ned (and his cousins Ted and Fred) who started their lives as autocorrections, but who have morphed in to virtual helpers, and are borrowed by thread members from time-to-time when the going gets tough on Mount Washmore.

Most days we pop on to post our "to do" and "ta da" lists of what we’ve managed to do and have a bit of a natter. Please don't compare your list with someone else's as this is all about individual progress.

More info follows (but again, please note we advise only looking at the pdfs and not downloading them):

** launch pad (general guidance and info) here

** daily babysteps pdf (ignore the ones that don't suit you or your home) here

** week day missions (some fledglings find it easier to do them at weekends) here

** info about zones (explanation of how zones work) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/br/2017/09/02/please-explain-the-zones/

here]]

** weekly zones (a rough weekly guide to which area of the house we are tackling currently, again adapt to suit yourself) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/flying-lessons/zones/

here]] and here

** daily focus (helpful guide to allocate a certain day for a certain task) here

** deep cleaning lists pdf (only attempt when you have decluttered as you can't clean clutter!) here

Habit of the month: here

Good luck and happy Flying one and all!

☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️I've forgotten today's St Patrick's Day!! Thanks for reminding me SC One of the funny things about being Irish abroad is the misconceptions picked up by your own children. When he was smaller, Ds solemnly wished me 'Top O the morning to you' - I had to tell him that is not something we Irish ever utter. He wouldn't believe me 🤣 ☘️🍀

Tinselette1940 · 17/03/2020 07:31

☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️Barry's tea, Barm brack, chocolate Kimberly biscuits, tayto crisps and proper corned beef (not the tinned stuff) in the naughty corner. Guinness and Jameson for later 😉

Need to catch up.
Read that it is the bathroom.😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂😂 we have nearly plastered walls. The plumber came to take the shower off so that the builder can remove the rest of the tiles, tile it and then plumber comes back to replace shower. Builder didn’t turn up. Lots of jokey text sent, no reply then later a text to say his and his mate have Coronavirus 😳 and he didn’t know what to do. So we have a chance of getting it.he was with us on Saturday.
In the meantime we can’t shower. Have had an APC was for five days. Can’t go to son 2 as he has a lodger, a Consultant from the hospital living there. DS3 is very worried about me ( doesn’t know the latest) and doesn’t want us to shower there because a lot of staff have been in the pub when they should have gone home as a colleague has been allowed to work when she came back from Italy. So they have now put their staff at risk and other customers. He said it was packed last Thursday. So APC for two weeks and hope I don’t get it. GP says I have 80% chance.

On a better note I didn’t take my meds on Saturday and was up earlier, went to Mass and painted the boxed in pipes then started on the rest of room. Have now painted all the room and put most of it back planning to not put some back to have less and keep tidier.
Plan to do some of kitchen that we have decided not to tile because too costly. Will read everyone’s post today.
Also went to counsellor and think I am going to leave work. I was making steps about visiting with a plan to start going back and gradually increase my hours and see how I felt. I receive a text to say I am not allowed in. She didn’t even have the decency to pick up the phone and explain.visitors are not allowed in. I thought I was still a member of staff! Not for much longer I fear.😢

Sizeablecontours · 17/03/2020 08:25

Grin Grin Grin Grin @ "Top of the morning" Tinselette and YY to proper corned beef ...(tayto crisps are usually no problem as a friend usually smuggles them in and they are available via Amazon nowadays anyway!)

Sorry your dd2 is so stressed Zoo Sad. I suppose the uk's approach is to do with taking the most vulnerable (elderly and those with other health conditions) out of harm's way in isolation, while letting the least affected congregate (children) and then creating a buffer between the two by banning social gatherings. But how that applies to multi-generational homes I'm not really sure Confused.

I must confess I think the way things are currently, if school hadn't been banned here, I would definitely be considering flouting the rules (and I say that as a parent who is always explaining to dd the emphasis here which is placed on the importance of considering and doing what is best for the group as a whole, not just looking at one individual's needs). I would be feeling very stressed, guilty and conflicted about it though, so I am glad the decision was taken out of my hands.

I can totally understand the desire to both hide and escape all at the same time Expletive! Well done for ploughing on through with the dreaded form despite everything else going on around you. I have decided to do the same with my dossier (if everywhere is still open) as I have no idea when the "lockdown" (it isn't a true lockdown yet) will be over here.

Thank you Zoo Smile and I hope you can distract yourself for a bit today. Would it be ok if you went in your garden (keeping a distance from neighbours) to plant some seeds or similar and get some sunshine? If not, don't worry, the fledglings have your back Grin

Waves to Foxes (hope your dh keeps safe and well) and to eveyrone else!

Ta da cont'd/..
hung up dark wash
put two more machines on
s & s
brushed furries
emptied dw

Must get on, starting work in 5. Small steps everyone, small steps ... !

Oh Bower that is a shoddy way to treat you Sad. Really rude and unhelpful to send a text Flowers. Being devil's advocate, I suppose it must be extra stressful being head-teacher at a time like this and maybe she was very short of time. Easy for me to say, and very hard to do in practice, but I hope you will feel better once you have made a definitive decision either way. Keep safe and sorry about the lack of water and your builders. The extra inconvenience and worry is that last thing you need right now Flowers Flowers

foxessocks · 17/03/2020 12:35

Oh bower poor you hope you're ok Flowers
Zoo deep breaths and really hope the dc stop bickering!!

I agree sc it's hard to know what to do. So many parents on the FB page have said they are taking their kids out and I've sent mine but keep feeling maybe I'm wrong...

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 17/03/2020 12:45

Zoo feel for you being stuck in. I'm dreading having to do this with my lot.

Ta-da's from this morning
✔️ S&S
✔️ ironing
✔️ LOL
✔️ dressed and make up on
✔️ quick tidy round upstairs when everyone was dressed and made beds
✔️ breakfast for DC. They asked for a second bow of cereal and I warned them we'd be on rations if anyone gets sick as I have no idea how I will get shopping in

Got to work to find out one of the girls in the office came in yesterday despite being in contact with someone who was ill. She had a cough herself and decided she would come in anyway. Management are furious! We've cleaned the shit out of the office and they are now looking into the feasibility of us working from home. My DGM then messaged me to say it had all kicked off in the school yard because one of the kids had been sent into breakfast club despite having a raging temp. Can't believe how defuse people are being.

Stilllivinginazoo · 17/03/2020 14:16

we3 one dd2 mates in quarantine.dad works something to do formula one and travels loads.he was home from.italy just before dad people had self isolate on returning .3his friends were diagnose deffo have it.hes given to his DD.mums GONE TO WORK.why are some so flippant about it?we should be responsible enough protect those that are vulnerable.one thing I'm hoping will come of this is kindness and gratitude come to forefront of everyone's lives!!

Foxes D's school(not that he attends) email 30%staff now self isolating as I'll or family are and shutting down years 8,9 and 10 but 7 and GCSE/a levels still to go in...madness if you have kids in different years!
Camhs banning face to face apps,so D's didn't have visit out today.dd2 anxiety groups cancelled but they will ring n check in weekly, dep how things go

Churches here are (c of e) no longer doing services.this morning we got word no choir, mum's n tots, cafe, well being groups or brick church

Colleges here closing today too

I need get off my bloody phone!!!!

Bowerbird5 · 17/03/2020 15:14

I’m fine I haven’t been out very much in the last six months so not much different. I have a plan if I get cabin fever I am going to bake then later (that day or next) we could have a drive out and park in a village about 20 minutes from here. Look at the view and have a picnic. Not get out of the car unless only sheep which is possible but a car picnic.

Bowerbird5 · 17/03/2020 15:16

SCyes I thought considering we are trying to get me back to work she could have picked up the phone at some time that day.

LaneBoy · 17/03/2020 15:17

It’s insane we3 I started a thread asking about children’s centres and this was the reply...

Madness!!! These are social workers/support workers who visit potentially vulnerable people. I can understand needing to keep the service going as visits to potentially abusive homes being cancelled could be disastrous, but surely you should still make sick people stay home 😭

I’ve managed some fresh air and feel better for it other than getting muddy. Our garden is like a swamp.

Cagletini has just dozed off so I can finish my therapy diary from yesterday.

LaneBoy · 17/03/2020 15:24

Bower what’s APC? I hope you can stay well. So sorry about work. :(

I’m not too worried about needing to isolate, if it comes to it. None of us actually need to do the social distancing thing (no vulnerabilities from the list) but we are reducing anyway. DD1 is my main concern as she will be gutted, but my plan is to be pretty easy on screen time so she can video chat loads - I’ll still maintain a bedtime limit (especially as she wouldn’t get the fresh air and exercise of school so sleep is likely to get worse), and maybe have some “let’s all put phones away for an hour” times, and obviously get work done with incentives like yes you can phone your friends once you’ve done maths etc

Who knows what’ll happen though. Not heard about St John Ambulance yet as HQ not told the leaders. Ballet school principal is waiting to hear from the theatre.

Just watching the “pivot” episode of friends and then I’ll go and write up therapy 😅

Bowerbird5 · 17/03/2020 15:53

Lane yoga? For exercise and relaxation. Perhaps you could do it together.
APC was coined by someone I knew a long, long time ago. She was a social worker about 50 and had two grown up children. I was in love with her son at 17. He was my first 💕 love. He was quite a bit older so we kept it secret. I am not sure if she knew.
Anyway we went to lots of shows and competitions some I rode in and some I was his groom as he was in a more competitive group and a different sport to me though I was in the novice team. To keep costs down we often slept in the vans. It was her code word for Arm Pits and Crotch wash as no showers. Sometimes one or two would stay in a hotel and those of us that were staying in vans used to sneak in to have a shower. We had lots of fun and she was one of the people I missed most in that country. I also missed him but about six months before I put a stop to it as he was a philanderer and I knew he would just bring me misery in the long run. I haven’t seen him since even when I returned to that country.

Bowerbird5 · 17/03/2020 15:55

DH has left and gone shopping. I don’t think he should have.

LaneBoy · 17/03/2020 16:00

Ohhh that makes sense :o

Yes yoga a good call. So much stuff on YouTube.

LaneBoy · 17/03/2020 16:00

Tinselette1940 · 17/03/2020 20:00

we3 I'm sorry to hear this.

Keep cosy over the next 14 days. We're trying to work out a structure for the household day at the moment so that I don't just sit on the couch in my jammies and eat biscuits while scrolling through instagram.

I see your neck of the woods is becoming locked down SC
