Mad March Fledglings Fly in to action 2020

Sizeablecontours · 28/02/2020 17:55

A warm welcome to the monthly thread where we (loosely) follow the Flylady housekeeping system here to combat CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) with lots of virtual wine, chat and mutual support along the way. The thread leader of the month will post a link to Flying activities daily. Quite a few of us have been on here for a while, so we may seem cliquey, but we really aren't, and all newcomers, lurkers, returnees, regulars, and intermittent regulars are very welcome!

Very simply, Flylady is a zone-based cleaning system which we follow to varying degrees, depending on our individual homes, circumstances and energy levels. There are five zones and at the beginning and the end of the month we usually straddle Zone 1 and Zone 5. When you first start decluttering, cleaning, and organizing your zones, Flylady encourages you to spend 15 minutes per day decluttering in the current zone.

Each week, we work in a different zone. Each month, we repeat all the zones. After a few months of following this system consistently, you should start to see an improvement in the main areas of your house.

Pop on to the Flylady website to have a closer look about how to get started here but signing up for emails will probably lead to very many landing in your inbox. Also there has been some concern about securely downloading pdfs from the site so proceed with caution.

The Babysteps system is a light 31-day introduction to the system which familiarises you with Flylady routines (such as dressing to shoes, shining your sink etc) and with her philosophy, which emphasises self-care, her abhorrence of perfectionism and the adage that you’re never behind - just jump in where you are at - even if you only do 5 mins work, that is so much better than doing nothing at all!

There is a morning routine and an evening routine to keep things ticking over and a weekly home cleaning hour (which most of us find tight!) to change bed sheets, mop, hoover, take out rubbish etc. We've found over the years that the system isn’t brilliant for major decluttering so you might want to supplement with Kondo or another decluttering system. Flylady doesn’t want us cleaning all day so she is very keen on using a timer. Clean and declutter with focus, then stop and do something more interesting instead!

In addition each day has a purpose, see the daily focus here:
Monday: weekly home cleaning hour (can be split into ten minute sections and spread over week)
Tuesday: plan and play (menu planning, family event planning, doc appts etc)
Wednesday: anti-procrastination day
Thursday: errand day
Friday: clear out purses, bags, cars, date night
Saturday: family fun
Sunday: lift your spirits.

Don't hesitate to ask if you have any qs. And remember, there is NO wrong or right way of doing this, it is about adapting the system to suit your life circumstances, which will be different from someone else's, so feel free to ignore any step or routine that doesn't suit you or your home! And don't be put off by the barftastically twee language of the Flylady site, as the underlying system is sound.

And if/when it all gets too much: come and take a seat by the fire in our candelit, specially adapted, virtual "naughty" corner where you can retreat and enjoy all manner of lovely things such as fluffy pillows warm blankets, fine teas, strong coffee, and platters of sumptuous foodstuffs offered with lashings of support from fellow fledglings.

There may be mention of Ned (and his cousins Ted and Fred) who started their lives as autocorrections, but who have morphed in to virtual helpers, and are borrowed by thread members from time-to-time when the going gets tough on Mount Washmore.

Most days we pop on to post our "to do" and "ta da" lists of what we’ve managed to do and have a bit of a natter. Please don't compare your list with someone else's as this is all about individual progress.

More info follows (but again, please note we advise only looking at the pdfs and not downloading them):

** launch pad (general guidance and info) here

** daily babysteps pdf (ignore the ones that don't suit you or your home) here

** week day missions (some fledglings find it easier to do them at weekends) here

** info about zones (explanation of how zones work) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/br/2017/09/02/please-explain-the-zones/

here]]

** weekly zones (a rough weekly guide to which area of the house we are tackling currently, again adapt to suit yourself) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/flying-lessons/zones/

here]] and here

** daily focus (helpful guide to allocate a certain day for a certain task) here

** deep cleaning lists pdf (only attempt when you have decluttered as you can't clean clutter!) here

Good luck and happy Flying one and all!

That’s an impressive first attempt Zoo!

Ooh exciting stuff on the tattoo front Lane. I’d also heard that about ibuprofen. It definitely makes sense. I’m asthmatic so tend to avoid it anyway, and will be staying clear in the event I’m infected.

Foxes what a gorgeous girl. Is there any role poly left for the naughty corner?

Thanks Cineraria. Well done on staying on top of things. The thread has definitely helped me on that front too, particularly the last couple of days when I was feeling so ‘meh’. Wanting to have some ‘Ta Das’ to post gave me a kick up the bum.

Hit a proper slump again this afternoon. Felt rubbish, angsty and had no energy to play with DD. I realised it’s the lack of control and lack of plan that’s been getting to me. I’ve had the next few weeks planned out in my head for ages - time off work for sorting the house / a shopping trip / nail appointment / packing, then my weekend abroad and then another week off with DD and DH. Now it’s all up in the air. So, to sort myself out I came up with the back up plans - what’ll happen if the trip goes ahead last minute, is cancelled fully, we end up going somewhere in this country instead, or we are on total lockdown. I’ve got the food situation sorted, and I know we have a plan of nursery closes. We are both very lucky that we are ok financially and job-wise if we have to self-isolate etc. It’s awful reading some of the threads on here about the difficulty some families / businesses are facing (I’ve decided to step away from them, and concentrate on whether I can help anyone locally).

I feel much better now and have pulled myself together. I really am such a control freak Blush

Ta Das (after my shaky start to the afternoon)
✅ Wet laundry hung up / in dryer
✅ Huuuuge pile of clean clothes away
✅ bit of ironing done and hung up
✅ DD’s bedroom tidied
✅ dinner dishes sorted
✅ soup made and overnight oats prepped
✅ work clothes ready and nursery bag packed
✅ bathroom cupboard tidied up as it wouldn’t close after my shop (hadnt bought much but it was at bursting point anyway)
✅ read to and played with DD for a bit after leaving her to her own devices while in my funk

She’s crashed on the sofa so having a relaxing bath before carrying her upstairs.

Enjoy your Sunday’s everyone, and good luck for the week ahead.

KTCluck · 15/03/2020 19:25

Cross-post We3. Amazing list! It’s perfectly acceptable to have ordered a Chinese. You need to keep the food in case of isolation!

LaneBoy · 15/03/2020 20:50

Bloody hell we3 epic list!

Just taking a brief intermission from movie night (finally watching the horrible histories film) as realised DD hasn’t put her shirts on to wash yet. Roast lamb was nice, need to strip the rest and freeze it (we are AWFUL for wasting leftover roast if we just stick it in the fridge)

Have done some future friend stuff for tomorrow too.

Love the crochet zoo and thanks cineraria for the drawing ideas. I’ve ordered much smaller cards than what I used previously as it feels a bit less daunting! Also finally ordered the pens I’ve been saving for (a pack of 60 triplus fine liners) as the extra colours will be useful!

Stilllivinginazoo · 16/03/2020 04:40

Wow we3 that's amazing list.feffo deserves a takeaway!
KT I think most of us are finding the lack of control difficult
Laneroast lamb sounds good.nice to hear you buying something for yourself

I text dd1 and am informed someone in her dept at work has dropped.as her coughs worsened with a new cold(and fiance has same) she has to ring in tom but expecting need to self isolate.as an asthmatic I'm worried for her, even though she says it feels like a chest infection(of which there's a bug going round and 3 others are already down with) she only found outvia a friend in the office as she was off Thursday/Friday,there's been no official notice.one other managers in same office is my friend of 10 kids daughter.she went to mum's yesterday for big family dinner.praying they don't all drop too

I've told dd1 keep in touch.she planning paint the kitchen if off for the week and tackle batch cooking/list chores.partner has list d.i.y and their pup will be very happy for the extra love/company!!

sc we have a rowing machine which I constantly put laundry on 🤦‍♀️Grin

Plenty of jam Roly poly left for the naughty corner! Dd declared it delicious, she was very proud of herself! Hopefully we'll get the photos printed today so she can take her homework into school this week (if the school stays open long enough of course...)

Ktcluck I'm the same I hate lack of control!

Right now though it's business as usual, apart from I do have the day off today so will try and tackle some housework.

LaneBoy · 16/03/2020 08:16

Morning all. Taken my meds but that’s the only achievement thus far! Glad I future friended last night. :o I need to shower and leave in time for the 9.41 bus if not the earlier one.

Just wanted to add also, anyone worried about school closures/self isolating from school, there’s a lovely group on FB where home educators are sharing ideas etc :) I know we’ve not reached that stage in England yet (I’m so confused as yesterday I heard about a potential announcement on Tuesday regarding sending all but public workers’ kids home, AND about potential legislation making it illegal to close schools... WTF? I hate the media sometimes) but if anyone wants the name PM me.

Stilllivinginazoo · 16/03/2020 09:20

Morning
Well 111 have told dd1 she's in self isolation for a week.shes cracking out her sewing machine and plans fix hems on curtains that have been on her to do for a while then possibly use up some fabric making new sofa cushion covers!

Here lil zoo now has a more obvious cough.im waiting school to ring back(student services opens at 9 so I left a message) whether she's allowed in and warn then dd2 has the sore throat and painful chest it started as but come in as no fever etc..lil zoo has no fever either.they can decide if she can go,or if they need don a hazmat suit and evict dd2 from premises...
My chest feels a little tighter than usual,so on those grounds I'm expecting get whatever lurgy us in these here parts as my immune system is rubbish and as I already get breathless climbing stairs/palpitations I'm running at things today getting order ok in place so things can press on should I be poorly.that will understand when you only have one adult and houseful DC there needs steps in place if that adult can't do anything useful...
Sweep floor

To do
See what advice is regarding school and the girls
Pop shop and collect few lots of part bake rolls and wraps as these have long dates generally and will give the zoolets bread if I'm not allowed out/too poorly to go anywhere
Pick up couple tins tuna,pk ham/tin corned beef and some paste or similar as simple things they can prep them selves if needed
Couple salad bits-again they can prep lettuce, tomatoes etc themselves

LaneBoy · 16/03/2020 09:23

I have nothing to add other than the fact I have now lost over a stone so far this year :o YAY!

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 16/03/2020 09:42

Well done on the weight loss lane. I've been bought (at my request) the two pinch of nom cookbooks for Mother's Day and diet starts for me next Monday. DS4 had me up at 4 this morning and even though I'm not supposed to have them yet I spent a couple of hours flicking through them. He went back to bed after and hour and just woke up as I was leaving 🙄

Wow zoo what a list for so early in the day.

My morning Ta-da's after I finished my cook book flicking:
✔️ S&S
✔️ LOL
✔️ ironing inc the curtains so hung them
✔️ bathed but then out of time for hair and make up

Stilllivinginazoo · 16/03/2020 09:55

lane that brilliant!you should be so proud of yourself.x

LaneBoy · 16/03/2020 15:22

We3 those books sound lovely, I’ve heard great things!

Fab list zoo sorry DD1 is having to SI, but it sounds like she is making the best of it. In some ways I think this could be quite good for people - being forced to slow down (obviously if jobs/earnings at risk it can be dire for people though, we are lucky that it won’t affect us financially). I’m reading so much about people using it as an opportunity to try new things, get stuff done etc.

And the neighbouring town where I have therapy was so much quieter, even the bus journey was all but empty (other than a couple of people coughing, FFS). Maybe the beautiful weather today helped (first time I’ve had to actually carry my coat instead of wear it!) but the world just felt... simpler? It’s weird how in some ways it’s just like nothing is happening at all, and then you get these pockets of peace and I guess in supermarkets pockets of panic.

✅got up, showered and out in time for therapy
✅read a chapter of my book on the bus (despite also ending up in conversation with random dude from Barbados about isolation and getting old)
✅found DH his meds (vitamin D supplements sold by pharmacy only, they are ones he needs to take in conjunction with his osteoporosis meds) - zero supply issues with it so far which is a relief
✅paracetamol and shower gel bought
✅therapy, which overran because she spent the first ten minutes discussing hygiene policies 😅
✅wrote notes on session on the way home, will write up properly later
✅had catch up call from Bibic (charity assessment centre we went to last year) re DS, absolutely lovely and encouraging, really made me happy 💕

Must get some other stuff done now. DD1 just texted super disappointed her first football match has been cancelled by the other school. I do feel it’s the right thing, just sucky timing for her!

Lisette1940 · 16/03/2020 15:52

Hey well done Lane on the weight loss!

Working from home today. No flying done but might start the bathroom later when I clock off. I'd better get back to work. Wing flaps to all.

HungryHazelEyes · 16/03/2020 18:53

Well I just got caught up with the thread. I'm not going to be able to reply to anyone today, sorry. Just a quick stop to say I am still here and everything's ok. School will be out here for the next 2 weeks, DC had to go in today to pick up info on working from home the next 4 days, next week is spring break here, so no work to do that week. Will find out if they go back the 30th or if they will close for longer when it gets closer to the time.

At work they are talking of having skeleton crew, 1 person per day, only phone and mail payments. Don't know the details yet, but they're talking about it being that way for a MONTH! This world has gone mad!

Minimal flying done lately, lots of birthdays this week, including mine. DDs is today! I have been trying to keep kitchen cleaned up before going to bed every night and my clothes pulled out the night before. Working very well so far.

Hello to everyone, I just hope we all survive the crazies! (And have enough toilet paper, which I don't..)

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 16/03/2020 19:24

Hope your daughter has had a nice birthday despite the corona madness hazel.

Few ta-da's from since I got in
✔️ 2 lots of ironing. One of which is still waiting to be put away off to do that in a second.
✔️ LOL
✔️ made lunches
Then went to DS3 parents evening which was fab so that's 2/3 fantastic ones so not too bad 🤣
✔️ made dinner

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 16/03/2020 20:25

And
✔️ dishes
✔️ put them last of the ironing away
✔️ swept downstairs
✔️ 3&4 bathed & bed
✔️ made supper for 1&2 for after their shower

Now in my pj's and going to get on with some college work.

LaneBoy · 16/03/2020 20:26

Happy birthday to DD hazel my twin DSDs’ birthday is in a few weeks actually so goodness knows what will happen - they were meant to have moved into their flat just before but if anyone has to self isolate they may not even be able to see each other! Crazy times.

Scouts cancelled till further notice. Last two sessions of ACEs postponed until after Easter at the earliest. Dance show for next weekend cancelled by the theatre (not until DD was already at the last rehearsal 🙄). Libraries closed with immediate effect until further notice (hoping they freeze fines...) 😱

Wondering if tap class will be off as the teacher is pregnant. Hoping the theatre hosting the other dance show will follow suit. Not heard anything from remaining clubs yet but DS is unwell too now, same throat thing DD had.

Crazy, crazy times.

KTCluck · 16/03/2020 21:37

Top flying Zoo and We3

Lane well done on the weight loss! I’m currently at a 9lb loss. Was hoping for 1.5 stone off before my weekend away. At least I’m off the hook now it’s not happening Grin

Hazel hope your DD has a lovely birthday.

Ta Das:
✅ yoga before work
✅ LOL
✅ beds made
✅ productive day at work
✅ car filled up with fuel (future friend!)
✅washing in dryer
✅ living room and hall tidied
✅ dishes and kitchen sorted
✅ tomorrow’s lunch prepped
✅ clean washing carried upstairs
✅ visited TKCC (thanks SC!)

Ta didn’t:
✖️Find any toilet roll

Now I need to sleep. Night fledglings!

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 16/03/2020 22:05

Brilliant lists there We3 and zoo, and fab weight loss Lane and KT. I know how you've done it, you've sent it all to me!

Madly busy day, feeling very out of kilter re: coronavirus and no plan, so decided to force structure.

Ta Das:
☑️ DW rotated and on again
☑️ LOL x 2 (including hanging out in the ☀️)
☑️ Clean our bathroom
☑️ S&S cloak room and family bathroom
☑️ Let plumber in to fix broken valve on radiator
☑️ Planning, planning, planning
☑️ Therapy. Ugh.
☑️ Spoke to client to bring meeting forward to Friday.
☑️ Long discussion with DH when I got home
☑️ 3rd LOL made up principally of tea towels and DD's beloved Doggy, who unfortunately fell in the hot sauce on her avocado bagel 🤦
☑️ Made cauli cheese for me - variations on pasta for others
☑️ Spoke to DMum about house insurance and isolation. She is pragmatic but very worried
☑️ Got the washing back in, folded and in the airing cupboard.
☑️ Latin lesson for DD
☑️ Fed everyone.
☑️ Clear and wipe kitchen, DW on again.
☑️ Refereed bad tempered exchange between DD and DS2.
☑️ Sent DD to Kung Fu
☑️ Grown-up discussion with DS2, who is disappointed but stoic that his birthday party is going to have to be cancelled. As, possibly, are his driving lessons.
☑️ Sent DS3 up to bed to start HP and the Deathly Hallows. He is very excited.
☑️ Walk dog with DH
☑️ Clip dog's nails.

Now in bed trying to concentrate on my book, instead of frantically refreshing Twitter for more information.

Good morning,

We all still have work and school today Shock. Pretty well everything else is cancelled though. It's pretty hard to get your head round, part of me wants to just stick my head under the duvet for the duration and part is desperate to get out of the house. We will have to distance one another as much as possible at work. I've very nearly finished the bloody PIP form, tonight I just need to collate and label up all the attachments, then parcel it all up and send it off tomorrow.

foxessocks · 17/03/2020 06:52

Same here expletive dh has gone off to work as per usual, his is a mostly manual job so isn't able to work from home. School is open, nursery is open although there were hardly any kids there yesterday.

I'm working today too but I always work from home. Need to get to a shop to buy what didn't come in my online order last night which was a lot!

Stilllivinginazoo · 17/03/2020 07:08

Morning
Under government rules we are now in isolation!
My mental health tends to rely on a huge amount walking outside so this is going to be tricky
Up from 230 as dd2 having panic attack- her Spanish teacher had a go at her yesterday for being off school last week and not doing Spanish speaking mock.shes been told HAS to report to her today for test, which she cannot now as we in a household with a cough.she reduced DD to tears yesterday in clas which triggered massive panic attack and she had leave room
I fired off angry email to head of learning stating if teacher can't treat her gently given knowledge she's struggling with my I will be requesting she withdrawn sitting Spanish full stop and she can sit wherever during said classes and will not sit the exams as I will not have anyone pushing her over the edge when she is teetering and anyone who thinks I take this decision lightly needs understand if she falls we may not be able to pull her backSad

Can some explain the social distancing theory(no pubs, gym etc) but ok put 2000+ kids together in secondary schools??I personally think off you don't be consistent, people won't listen

I trying work out my game plan from here in
Hoping you guys can keep me semi sane!!

Sending hugs to all

SC you doing above and beyond on the leader front lovely.much appreciated❤️❤️
