Welcome to the first Flylady thread of the decade! This is a friendly ongoing thread where we follow (loosely. In some cases, very loosely. Blush) the Flylady method for sorting out our homes and lives!

Newbies are always welcome here! It’s a long running thread so please don’t worry if we appear cliquey. There’s a lot of chatter and support for all sorts of things, alongside the housework stuff.

Over recent months we have agreed that big lists of daily links aren’t necessary - on a daily basis I will post (if I remember... it is maybe 18 months since I last hosted so please forgive any screw ups Blush) a link to the launch pad, which is where you can access the information for that day - babysteps, missions, daily focus etc. But if you’re confused about anything, please ask!

Check out the website too - but we suggest not signing up for the millions of emails.

Information on getting started here.

The great thing about Flylady is that you jump in where you are. Everything you do is progress. Don’t worry about not “keeping up”. Any achievement, however small, means progress.

Anyway, huge thank you to Stressy for running our very busy December thread! Thanks

And... HAPPY NEW YEAR FLEDGLINGS!!!

Sorry to hear about the draining meeting Bower, that really doesn't sound fun at all.

No washing up for a couple of days for me due to the minor surgery (which is a bit more painful than I was expecting tbh, only due to the location which is chock-full of sensitive nerve endings!). I told DD she'd have to wash up, that didn't go down well Hmm DH cooked the tea, he's just started Slimming World so he's trying to get his head round all the recipes. Unfortunately I hate the taste of any kind of sweetener so we may be back to doing different meals Sad He was eying up a chicken recipe using diet cola.

Always good to get new ideas for food though

Catch you tomorrow fledglings, sleep well.

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 09/01/2020 21:02

Chic i love slimming world diet cola chicken. You can do a fruity one with Fanta zero too.

I haven't really done a lot today. Picked youngest up from childminder then quick trip to Aldi before picking others up from school.

Made dinner, lunches and quick tidy up then back to college for night class.

Asked dc to attempt to tidy their bedrooms a bit while I was out. It obviously fell on deaf ears but apparently they were helpful in tidying other bits and eldest dried the dishes.

Have just stuck the washing on to dry and should really run the hoover round but don't want to wake youngest.

Also have a load of ironing which I'm ignoring.

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 09/01/2020 21:10

Thanks Lane, driving test did not go well and we are Emphatically Not Talking About It. However, DD got to Greek without a panic (although she's now totally peopled out and hiding in her room until tomorrow). Ds2 got to the podiatrist, which I forgot about in my list this morning.

DS1 is going back to Uni tomorrow and has gone to a pub quiz with his mates to drown his sorrows, leaving me with all his bloody washing! I can't send him back with it dirty, so I've just put wash 2 on to dry and wash 3 in the machine. Hopefully it will be dry enough to pack by 10.30am tomorrow. He's a proper CF that one, but I will miss him.

LaneBoy · 09/01/2020 21:37

Ah 😞 willow that’s a shame about the... nope, not talking about the driving test 🤐

🤣🙄 at the laundry for uni though, cheeky.

Hope various junior fledglings calm the heck down ASAP. Including Cagletini who totally faked me out thinking she was tired... fed her and she’s back causing mayhem. 🙄😡

I think we need to try dimmer switches ASAP. She absolutely hates the dark and screams when we turn the light off, but bright lights aren’t helping her wind down either. So maybe we could very gradually dim the room without her noticing too much...? I don’t think the main light off and a normal lamp would work, it’d just be something else to play with for her 🙄

✅got the toddler to sleep not too long after posting before
✅wrote my journal (started it in July and just filled the last page! Already have my next one thanks to Paperchase sale :o)

Not feeling prepared for tomorrow but I’m going to make sure the sauce is in the freezer and try and sleep while I have a chance.

Lane - dimmer switches in all bedrooms here. DS developed night terrors when he was about 18 months old, it went on for weeks and a dimmer switch for his room was the answer. We put one in ours too as it made getting up in the night a bit easier (DH and I don't need full darkness to sleep) and also his current room which he moved to when DD was born. We travelled with a plug-in nightlight for years too. I think you can probably get smart ones now and operate them from your phone.

Chic - I'm going back to SW, I had to stop my old group when my work hours changed but there's a weekend one starting here shortly. I too hate sweeteners apart from in diet Coke which I love. I have to say the idea of meat cooked in sweet drinks makes me wince (sorry Foxes).

Bowerbird5 · 10/01/2020 00:12

Willow can’t have been as bad as mine. A two year old ran in front of the car and I nearly hit him. I was so shaken I took the wrong exit on the roundabout back to the centre and couldn’t remember the sequence of the traffic lights. I passed three weeks later.

Thanks Chic hopefully there will only be one more. I would remind her you have had surgery. I would also keep it going for a week after milk it.🥛 use the time to read watch tv.

Ooh Cagletini! 🤣🥰 I suppose she is in a bed now. Otherwise I was going to suggest those salt lamps it is a very soothing light and DD swears by hers. Which reminds me I should set it up again and the diffuser so it calms me to sleep.

We have stir fry chicken veg and ginger. I love ginger.

Strategicchoring · 10/01/2020 00:16

Hope your hand feels better soon Chic!

HungryHazelEyes · 10/01/2020 04:49

Chic I hope you have a quick recovery from your surgery, take it easy!
Willow your DS was very cheeky leaving his laundry to the last day so you have to do it! I understand why you wouldn't want him to go back to uni with dirty clothes though.
Lane good luck with weaning! I dried up pretty quick with both of mine (DD was 2 months, DS was 5 months - I wanted to go longer for sure, just couldn't produce!)
Zoo sorry too hear about DDs anxiety, hopefully she was able to rest well and feel better tomorrow (Friday)
bower I'm sorry to hear about your meeting, I hope things improve for you.

Sorry to hear about all the tantrums and bad attitudes from all your DCs today. DS also was having a bad attitude tonight so somethings in the air!

So today I accepted a job offer! I was offered it yesterday but wanted to make sure I could afford to switch before saying yes. Turns out I will be bringing home about the same, possibly more due to family medical insurance paid in full by the new employer! I'm excited, scared and nervous, but ready for a change. I'll be letting my current manager know Monday, when he gets back from his holiday. I feel bad as we're so short staffed, but I have to do what's best for me, and right now I don't feel secure in my job with the changes being made by corporate.

As far as flying goes I did get dinner in the slow cooker this morning, went to work of course. I did get my hot spots taken care of and got rid of a few papers we no longer need. There's lots I need to go through in my filing cabinet, but that's for another day.

Sorry my post ended up being really long! Hello to everyone else I missed.

Stilllivinginazoo · 10/01/2020 06:22

Expletive was it easy to replace switches?

I’m intrigued by the salt lamp bower they’re so pretty too.

I need to write a list of all the things we currently need to buy. Household stuff (bigger things, not the cleaning supplies/toiletries we can get on Tesco order). There’s loads of little/medium random things and money is an issue at the moment (not even thinking of big stuff eg we don’t have a wardrobe!) so if we get it all down on one list we can prioritise and plan.

In the next hour I need to:
Breakfast
Get myself and toddler up and dressed
Pack her bag for nursery!!! 😱
Make and print last worksheet for DS

OP posts:
We3kingsoforientareandabump · 10/01/2020 08:28

I don't know where the time has gone this morning.

Ta-da's
S&S
Put a wash on
2 loads of ironing (still needs to be put away)
Hoovered and mopped downstairs.

By the time I'd finished that it was later than the time I should have left the house so no bath and just a quick clothes on, hair up, bit of foundation and done.

Luckily the DC got themselves sorted without me needing to even ask let alone the reminding every 2 mins like some mornings.

Youngest went to childminder in his PJ's (she only lives next door), he did present me with the most disgusting nappy just as I was about to leave though 🤮🙄

On my way to college now and hopefully will still make it in time 🤞

LaneBoy · 10/01/2020 09:00

ta da
✅paid for therapy (this was actually the reason I wrote a to do list this morning and yet I forgot to add it...)
✅made and printed DS’ worksheet - really pleased he now has a set of 5 sheets that can be reused every week for different countries. Lots of stuff to research (and later compare/do maths with etc), things to describe and draw etc
✅got toddler’s clothes (DH sorted her)
✅dug out new meds
✅got dressed

Ugh. Tired. But have to take Cagletini for her settling in session at nursery now. Yikes!

OP posts:
ExpletiveDelighted · 10/01/2020 09:33

Similar to changing a plug Lane, they come with instructions. Some low energy bulbs aren't compatible with dimmers. Also be aware that they can make a slight humming noise, it doesn't bother us bit might some people.

LaneBoy · 10/01/2020 10:17

Thank you, yes I am familiar with the buzzing :o had dimmer switches in bedrooms growing up. I’ll probably find it nostalgic 😂

ta da
✅took Cagletini for nursery, stayed about 40 mins while she went from screaming to happy and left her playing in their massive and very muddy garden! Eeeeek!!!

ChicCroissant · 10/01/2020 10:22

Morning! Hand a lot less hurty today so far, so hopefully the paracetamol will help more. Will have a couple now with a coffee!

Maybe I'll have to try the cola chicken kings, thanks for the recommendation. DH has (previously ...) very plain tastes and refused any kind of sauce so it is slightly irritating that he's now willing to give it a go when it benefits him rather than me Hmm I do love ham in (full fat and sugar) coke though, so chicken should be a winner apart from the sweeteners Expletive All SW hints and tips welcome, there is probably a thread on here somewhere if I looked!

DH did the washing up in the end Bower. As the wound is the equivalent of a burn with the cauterisation (on a fingertip full of nerves) although it needs to stay dry for a couple of days I'm also slightly nervous about the hot water making it sting. Will stay away from the sink no change there, then for as long as possible!

Hope the settling in session goes well Lane! Let us know if you get a chance, do you stay with her today?

LaneBoy · 10/01/2020 14:23

Quiet in here today! Hope everyone is either being pleasantly productive or relaxing!

I keep meaning to try ham or chicken in coke. I would do full sugar though I think. If it’s an occasional thing I’m not bothered about the calories and most of the time I don’t like sweeteners (I make an odd exception for Pepsi Max which I have been quite hooked on in the past but now just enjoy with meals out in pubs etc).

Weird concern though, would the caffeine be an issue? DD1 is so sensitive to it (as am I tbh hence cutting down). Presumably it doesn’t cook off like alcohol.

DH picked Cagletini up after leaving her for an hour. She was mostly ok apparently, was upset but easy to distract with toys. Trying a full session (9-12) on Monday. And she had an early nap again so that’s good.

I went to the breastfeeding group and talked with the lady (NHS I think) who runs it for quite a while. Feel a bit more positive now, she was so so lovely, zero judgment and was happy to see me in a separate room as well so I could be really open about everything. Made some plans for gradually getting into more of a routine and she’s going to find me a HV as I don’t actually know if I have one since we moved!

Tada
Sorted a corner in kitchen.my little lazy Susan/turntable of herbs and spices now has a home, sorted some other stuff from that area, tidying as I went and reorganising
Stuck hooks on inside cupboard under sink door
Basket with stuff I use for home bleurgh so I can just pull that out and take it round room to room
Tidy and sort crate all laundry stuff
Sort crate for pet food
Sort out like for like stuff together

Tidy under dining table, relocating Lego there

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 10/01/2020 17:58

The thing is zoo if he moves back in under those circumstances and then it doesn't work out it will be harder for him to move back out if that makes sense. If you were going to do a trial run it would better having somewhere to send him back to if you need to.

Since I got back in I've put the ironing from this morning away.
Load of washing drying and another in the washer now drying.
Made dinner and cleaned up from that.

Have my car back 🎉 so I gave it a quick hoover out to celebrate.

Now dancing round the kitchen with the DC waiting until it's time to drop the eldest 2 at cubs then we will go and do the food shop while they're there.

ChicCroissant · 10/01/2020 18:25

I used to drink caffeine-free coke at one time lane, but it was years ago. We used to buy it in bulk at Costco, I'll see if I can see it in Tesco next time I go. I was avoiding caffeine in the hope of helping some pain I had at the time.

Have you ever lived together previously, zoo? Going on what you've said about him I'd be wary as well, although I'll also admit I can't imagine having a partner that I wouldn't live with!

rachael12345 · 10/01/2020 18:27

Zoo- dp sounds like hard work. Stand your ground , make up something that can't argued with as a reason not to. Can't think of anything clever right now but I'm sure you will...
Lane we have a fantastic night light - dims, is bright enough to read by , wireless. Will send link in a mo - of bought a few now so travek with them, akways hAve one charged etc

LaneBoy · 10/01/2020 18:30

Sigh. DD1 wanting to drop yet another club. School is wearing her out more than she wants to admit! She’s more socially tired than physically I think.

Really want to make some changes in family life though. So we can spend more time together in the evenings. I do miss her! But DH and I are so tired that we have no energy to be fun. Ever. 🤦‍♀️

She has agreed to help us cook and stuff like that so that will be nice.
