Welcome to the first Flylady thread of the decade! This is a friendly ongoing thread where we follow (loosely. In some cases, very loosely. Blush) the Flylady method for sorting out our homes and lives!

Newbies are always welcome here! It’s a long running thread so please don’t worry if we appear cliquey. There’s a lot of chatter and support for all sorts of things, alongside the housework stuff.

Over recent months we have agreed that big lists of daily links aren’t necessary - on a daily basis I will post (if I remember... it is maybe 18 months since I last hosted so please forgive any screw ups Blush) a link to the launch pad, which is where you can access the information for that day - babysteps, missions, daily focus etc. But if you’re confused about anything, please ask!

Check out the website too - but we suggest not signing up for the millions of emails.

Information on getting started here.

The great thing about Flylady is that you jump in where you are. Everything you do is progress. Don’t worry about not “keeping up”. Any achievement, however small, means progress.

Anyway, huge thank you to Stressy for running our very busy December thread! Thanks

And... HAPPY NEW YEAR FLEDGLINGS!!!

Hope you found that cup of tea that!

Toostressy I have given up already with organised mum Blush. I think I may have realised my problem - the timers just don't help me. If I'm not in the mood I'll just waste the time anyway so I may as well have just sat down and had a cup of tea. If I am in the mood for cleaning and organising (it does happen sometimes! Grin) then I'd rather just keep going until I've had enough. Which I know I could do anyway but the timer goes off and I end up stopping and then can't get back into it!

I think I need to go rogue. Just do whatever the hell I want when I want to (obviously life being life I will need to do laundry and dishes every day regardless Grin) So I'm rebelling in a pretty underwhelming way, story of my life there! 😂

Sorry can't scroll back very well on my phone...Rachael I think it was you re sourcing stuff second hand, I've been doing a lot of this recently and I totally get what you mean, you have to prepare in advance! It sometimes saves me money though because by the time I've got round to finding what I wanted I realise I didn't need it after all.

Also, I use Splosh for cleaning products, they do a refill service and the products are eco friendly too (as long as diluted correctly) . I think they're good but there are other similar ones around. I believe that pink stuff that everyone raves about is quite eco friendly too which might work in a similar way to Astonish.

Sorry another long post for everyone there (I enjoy them too bower and sc)

Sorry for everything and everyone I've missed out commenting on, got to get the kids out of the bath before they flood the entire bathroom , they appear to be playing princess Elsa versus Spiderman whilst in the bath Hmm

foxessocks · 07/01/2020 18:26

X post that good job you found it before it got knocked over though!

TooStressyTooMessy · 07/01/2020 21:01

Yay for cup of tea finding.

SC and Bower, I love long rambling posts!

Oooh foxes how exciting to go rogue Grin. I need rules to follow with the option to break some along the way. Otherwise I am paralysed with indecision and do nothing. Thanks for reporting back on TOMM.

LaneBoy · 07/01/2020 21:03

Thank you rachael I did start looking into dial a ride and stuff a while ago, I should check up on that.

Awww zoo thank you! It’s true even a year ago I would never thought I’d happily do yoga at all let alone twice in the space of a week (with a swim in between!). Last year I did a lot of stuff that scared me and it’s definitely benefited me :)

✅got eye test, chose glasses

That’s it. Been a useless sofa-dwelling lump all evening. Period pain epic today. Blah.

No plans outside the home tomorrow (I will try and get out for a little bit in the interest of keeping my New Year Resolution of leaving the house every day) so will focus on a bit of home ed for DS and trying to get various other phone calls and forms done, maybe meal planning and putting the laundry away... maybe?!

OP posts:
We3kingsoforientareandabump · 07/01/2020 21:20

Hope the period pain eases soon Lane. Sucks to be a woman sometimes 🙁

Called into Morrison's on my way home from work to get a couple of bits (mainly for the delicious vegan cupcakes if I'm honest)

Got home just after 6 and when round like a whirlwind putting everything back where it belongs. Didn't enter eldest ds's bedroom though I don't need to see that 😂

Did a load of ironing.
Made lunches for tomorrow.
Made a cottage pie which will do dh today and tomorrow and I'll just have toast or something tomorrow to give me a night off from cooking.
I'm such a messy cook though. I've literally just got the kitchen cleaned up and I'm going to have to put some oven cleaner in to work overnight because there's spillage everywhere.

Going to sit and do a meal plan now and write two shopping lists one for an online shop to come later this week and one for a little top up shop tomorrow. I'm useless at getting everything I need in one go and usually have to pop to the shop most days.

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 07/01/2020 21:34

Ouch Lane, I have to say period pain is something I don't miss, post-hysterectomy, although there was a certain excitement to fainting from the pain every couple of years! Hope it clears soon. Glad you can see how much better things have got over time with getting outside, exercise etc.

That, glad your tea turned up. I went through a phase of tucking mine onto bookshelves while I did something else and never being able to find them again!

Not much real flying today, just morning routine and dinner defrosted, but some other Ta Das:

  • walk with DS3
  • accounts totally up to date
  • filing system weeded and sorted
  • tax return completed and filed
  • taught DS3 long multiplication (school had done that and the grid method and utterly confused him)
  • got DS1 and DS2 to the dentist
  • made fish in cheese sauce for tea
  • collapsed in heap.

I've eaten something I shouldn't again, as I am very uncomfortable again. Last night it was raw courgette (leads to stomach ache and itching), can't currently think what today's has been. Something grainy, given the reaction. Meh. It's very dull.

I've noticed that I'm not really fitting in the Flylady daily missions, just managing the morning and evening routines. Can't see where they will go. My day is pretty much timetabled from 0630 to 2030, at which point I keel over. Does anyone have any ideas?

Stilllivinginazoo · 07/01/2020 22:00

willow some I do whilst cooking dinner/boiling kettlebulk them together at weekend if time?ignore them completely
Rachel i missed croissants!!will savemine for the morning!
That I've put keys in freezer and tomatoes in laundry basket in past!why I've no idea, but deffo put hand up and say you are not alone!!
3kingswhat sort of cupcakes
Foxes I'm like SC- need direction or just faff and indecisive time frittering but follow selectively
Hope Spiderman etc werent responsible for a bathroom tsunami!
Lane bad period pain completely incapacitates mebig sympathieshave DD periods settled?last you posted she was bleeding a long time?

Stilllivinginazoo · 07/01/2020 22:01
foxessocks · 07/01/2020 22:09

zoo hope your dd okay poor thing ☹️
I'll probably change my mind in about a week and be back on a flylady / TOMM / insert other housework routine here schedule . That's my issue I guess! 😂 At the moment I'm telling myself I can't possibly get the house how I want it with the building works going on...

LaneBoy · 07/01/2020 23:00

Aww poor DD2 zoo

DD1 is doing a lot better now thank you, they seem to have settled. Thank goodness because I was so so worried about how she’d manage with them being so heavy at school, will see how she gets on in a couple of weeks I think. Still a bit nervous about her remembering to change etc TBH and also considering getting her a toilet pass so she can leave lessons.

But they aren’t so heavy now since she started on iron tablets. She has a repeat blood test form I need to organise taking her (already picked up the magic cream).

I don’t normally get such bad pain but apparently worse cramps on ADHD meds are a known thing. Some people even stop taking them for the first few days each month but I’m not sure the trade off would be worth it! Using the cup has made a huge huge difference though. No way I would have dared do yoga today before, and I’ve swum with it too although only on a light day.

(Apologies for any TMI above!)

ta da
✅remembered to pay friend (usborne rep) for four books, I’ve resisted for soooo long but she did a good January sale :o two science books for DS and two books for Cagletini
✅read to DD1. It does seem they aren’t doing this book after all but maybe it’s on the curriculum at some point and we are finishing it regardless (Curious Incident - they’ve just started of mice and men today at school)
✅reeeeeally nice long chat with DD1 before bed. She gets a bit clingy, not in an upset way but I think just wanting the reassurance and to talk through aaaaall the stuff that happened in the day. Luckily the horrible girl hasn’t been in yet this term so it’s more general chatter really but lovely to reconnect

ChicCroissant · 07/01/2020 23:15

Elsa for the win in the bath battle, foxes!

Hope your DD is doing OK during/after the panic attack, zoo. It's certainly all action at your house, I hope you are doing OK yourself.

Will encourage DD to sleep now, and hope to get an earlier night myself. She's still on holiday sleep time!

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 07/01/2020 23:24

Zoo they are just chocolate cupcakes but they're delicious and you can't tell they are vegan at all. I'm not vegan but my youngest has dairy and egg allergies and he's still BF so I can't have it either. I also tried the new vegan chocolate brownie ice cream from Aldi today. I don't rate that at all but still managed to eat half a tub 🙈

I use a cup now too lane and I would never go back to using anything else. I'm lucky though that my implant makes my periods really light so I don't have to worry about leaking or anything.

ExpletiveDelighted · 07/01/2020 23:56

Evening all,

I like all the long chatty posts too, although I
struggle to keep up sometimes.

Croissant - I do that finding an old cup of tea in the microwave thing too Blush.

We3 - what are you studying? I did some OU modules in biological sciences a few years ago partly for work but mainly for interest.

Foxes - I use Splosh too, I like the system but am distinctly underwhelmed by the products themselves.

Rachael - I use Astonish on my enamel bath to get limescale drip marks off under the tap, what is non-eco about it?

Tada!

Washing
Work
Dinner
Took DS to football
Went to Tesco before picking him up
Hotspotte the landing including taking more Christmas stuff to loft
Paid bills/sent emails etc
Spent about an hour looking for a swimming hat and a front door key (both unsuccessful)

Failed to impress upon family the reason for this happening is clutter. DH genuinely doesn't see that the amount of crap we accumulate is a problem. We have a stack of old laptops and phones in the dining room that need their content deleting and getting rid of, I asked him if he'd do it and he more or less just said no. It's very annoying.

LaneBoy · 08/01/2020 00:35

Rubbish evening here. Since Cagletini hadn’t napped and was clearly tired I thought it might be a good chance to drop the bedtime feed. Hahahahaha. No. Finally gave up five minutes ago once both of us were in tears, she’s asleep already. Sigh. This kid has broken me. Hmm

Definitely prioritising getting to the breastfeeding group on Friday to talk through weaning as she will be at nursery from next week I think (hoping that will help her sleep better too TBH). To think the other time I went she was 9 days old! (Now 2y2m)

Absolutely heaps to get done tomorrow (today). I don’t feel too confident much of it will happen though.

Go back to the Power of Three Lane

LaneBoy · 08/01/2020 01:41

Good plan thank you Bower. I always forget that’s a thing! Is it from this thread originally? I couldn’t find it on Flylady.

For newbies, power of three is a good place to start when feeling overwhelmed. Just pick three things to do. Don’t think about the rest of your to do list. Just those three. When they’re done choose three more. Bit less scary than looking at the whole picture.

I’ll make my first three for tomorrow:
⚠️Put washing in dryer
⚠️Phone school to ask about app and canteen payments
⚠️Plan the day’s geography work for DS

And before I forget (again) here’s the launch pad :)

So not really much flying done by me today, although my DC did vacuum and mop the entire house (not that big!), clean the bathroom and a load of laundry. I did finish loading the dw and the kitchen is all cleaned up after dinner.

I did have some news on the job I applied for, I didn't get it, but its ok as I learned it would have been a big pay cut, which we can't afford at this time. I applied for another job at the city (another government job), and learned today that they had discussed me for a different position (more responsibilities and most likely, more pay). The lady who I would be replacing (if I get it) would train me, and she was the one talking about it, and about me being a good candidate. I'm excited, nervous and scared all at the same time. I'll find out more in a week or so as that position hasn't even opened yet!

HungryHazelEyes · 08/01/2020 04:23

Lane my DD is having horrible period pains too, I'm going to have to get her to the doctor soon to figure something out. She has missed days of school a few months ago because they were so bad.
Willow try to spread out daily mission/ break it down further, e.g. wipe down 2 cupboard doors while boiling kettle/ waiting for dinner to cook, or cram it in on a morning/ afternoon that everyone's home. Enlist some help too.
Zoo holy laundry! That was a lot you got done!

HungryHazelEyes · 08/01/2020 04:35

SC dog seems to be okay, she's supposed to rest but she's always wanting to jump around - it's impossible! Car is running okay too, although I'm waiting for it to die on me again. We try to go back to UK every 2-3 years, although last year I had to visit twice, once because my dad was hospitalised, the second time was for his funeral. We are planning to go back this Christmas (2020), but need to get all 4 passports first. I really want to be more green, but where I'm living now makes it so difficult. We try to not waste very much and our wheelie bin is usually only ever half full (unless I've been decluttering!). It gets picked up once a week, but that's all we have, no recycling bin or anything, which I really miss.

Sorry about the multiple posts, my phone makes it so hard to keep up and I missed loads of you. You all sound busy flying! Hello to you all!

Stilllivinginazoo · 08/01/2020 05:41

bower thanks.will Google kondo folded!!

Can't sleep

Accepting defeat and going to get up!

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 08/01/2020 06:40

Expletive I'm doing an access to midwifery course.

This mornings kettle boiling activity was to clean the mess I'd made of the oven and hob last night. It actually took me half an hour. Cleaning the oven is probably my least favourite job of all. I've had to come back to bed now so DS4 can have his milk and I don't want to get back out again it's so warm and cozy

foxessocks · 08/01/2020 07:15

expletive I know what you mean about splosh, I actually did have to give up with their dishwasher tablets they were terrible. That said, I do love the shower gel and laundry powder. I'm hoping they will continue to improve.

Good morning! Dh has the day off today to do the school runs, I've got the orthodontist this morning and then afternoon tea with my mum later (we won a competition!) Will try to do some kind of flying in between...

foxessocks · 08/01/2020 07:16

we3kings I'm genuinely considering getting someone in to clean my oven professionally. Dh always says he will do it (because he doesn't want to pay anyone!) but he never does! And I really hate it. And it never comes up that well anyway.
