Autumn leaves and a clean sweep: it's the October Fledgling Fly thread (2019)

Slowchirp · 30/09/2019 13:27

Welcome to the thread where we (loosely) follow the Flylady housekeeping system here to combat CHAOS (can't have anyone over syndrome) with a load of Wine, chat and mutual support along the way. Quite a few of us have been on here for a while, so for that reason, we may seem cliquey, but we really aren't, and all newcomers, lurkers, returnees, regulars, and intermittent regulars are very welcome!

Every day I will post a link to the activities for "Today" which summarises everything you need on a daily basis if you want to follow the system strictly, but we tend to adapt it to suit our individual circumstances, homes, and energy-levels!

Please note that, athough Flylady is keen for us to check in to the website, we've recently had a few concerns wrt security, so although there is lots of useful info on the site, it's best not download it or put any of your personal details into the website for now, or sign up to the (many and frequent) e-mails (but your choice as some fledglings find the latter helpful).

More information on getting started available:
here (containing baby-steps!) but please don't hesitate to ask if you have any further qs.

There are 4 levels for Flying:
-Baby steps - good for starting a routine and overcoming the perfection crippling effect
-Baby steps and missions - basic routine + more in depth tasks
-Baby steps, missions, and deep cleaning (if you are at that stage).
You can't clean clutter so don't consider this one if you need the next level.
-Flying combined with a decluttering system (kondo/unfuck etc etc) let's be honest fly lady is good for routine but not so quick with the decluttering results sometimes.

There is NO wrong or right way of doing this, it is about adapting the system to suit your life circumstances, which will be different from someone else's, and don't be put off by the barftastically twee nature of the Flylady site, the underlying system is sound. Feel free to ignore any step or routine that doesn't suit you or your home! No perfectionism allowed!

And when it all gets too much: come and take a seat by the fire in our specially adapted "naughty" corner where you can enjoy virtual Cakeand Wine and lots of support from fellow fledglings.

More info follows (but again, please note we advise only looking at the pdfs and not downloading them):

** launch pad (general info) here

** daily babysteps pdf (ignore the ones that don't suit you or your home) here

** week day missions (some fledglings find it easier to do them at weekends) here

** info about zones (explanation of how zones work) here

** weekly zones (a rough weekly guide to which area of the house we are tackling currently, again adapt to suit yourself) here and here

** daily focus (helpful guide to allocate a certain day for a certain task) here and here

** deep cleaning lists pdf (only attempt when you have decluttered as you can't clean clutter!) here

Good luck and happy Flying one and all!

Today I need to clear out ds clothes as a very kind friend gave me a load of hand me downs for him and I have no room to put them away! Not like dd who has nothing that fits , I actually ordered her a few bits off eBay yesterday!

Happy Wednesday everyone!

Oh dear that Halloween Grin didnt work!

Ah, yes, that is lovely, so happy Lil'Zoo had a fab birthday Zoo!

PsychoSmirk · 30/10/2019 08:20

Detailed cleaning list for Zone 5 (if anyone needs a reminder!) is here!

ChicCauldron · 30/10/2019 09:19

Morning! May have a day in today as there have been motorway issues by us which is causing a bit of gridlock (or we'll go out later when it has all cleared). Plenty to do though.

Need to make lists of things that need to be completed by this week, decorate for Halloween, keep DD entertained and get ready for next week. Have another scan on Friday but a less invasive one, have a few week's break before they start breaching my personal boundaries with cameras again Halloween Grin

Stilllivinginazoo · 30/10/2019 09:57

I was up early, but not on MN as realised I've agreed make lil zoo Halloween outfit for tomorrow, and I am not by any means of the imagination a competent sewer!!
I thought cut a sheet in half and gem edges, wrap around her like a towel then cross and tie behind her neck,a sash and use elastic(could only find fitted sheet) wrap in little fabric to make head band and add a bow made of fabric.she wanted to be a freak show twin,so I'm making 2 as friends mum just list her mum and hasn't organised anything either...I've done headband one,and started hemming.i hope this other kids not expecting much!!

Also
Cats fed
Wash on(towels)
Made dd2 pack up
Littertray and bins
Breakfasts
Wash up
S+s

It's taking much longer than I expected it too!
Off to subway with lil zoo to meet at friend at 11(one that's doing the party tomorrow) so I'm hoping get one finished before then

PsychoSmirk · 30/10/2019 11:52

Lunch break ...

Ooooh good luck with the speed sewing Zoo!

And hope you are not held up by traffic Chic!

Speaking of things taking longer than expected; I got lost down an on-line rabbit hole of antique farm doors this morning and took delivery of another on-line shopping order (cleaning materials for office) that I forgot was coming! I'd just got out of the bath four mins before it arrived so that was lucky!

Have also got two loads of washing done, one hung up and one in td
And emptied dw and sorted a pile of post. And wrote and translated a rather complex e-mail to builder.

Feeling much better today though with some energy and so about to start choring properly now ... honest...

... must admit it is beautifully calm here without the dogs reacting to every doorbell and no people moving something once I have put it down somewhere! Bliss!

Had better get properly cracking now though ...tally-hoooooo!

New thread for 1st November here

I will add in the baby step etc on 31 Oct. I had an emoticon fail in the title - sorry!

I have not be on the thread much over the last few days. I've started in a new section although my job roughly remains the same. There have been some teething problems about how I do things amongst the old timers so I have been very stressed. The hours are less flexible re child care so that has been an added stress too. And there may be more travel nationally which I'm not used to. [Homebird] I didn't sleep last night unfortunately due to worry. I'm sure it will settle down.

The house is an unholy mess because I've been distracted Smile.

Give me a heads up if I'm not doing things right regarding thread. I know we are moving into zone 1 this week too and must mention that.

Ghoulette1740 · 30/10/2019 14:54

You don't need to evacuate this thread just yet though! I'm just getting it ready for tomorrow.

foxessocks · 30/10/2019 15:52

sc Probably not what you're hoping for but only thing I'm baking today is soda bread to go with our fish stew...I can't bake anything sweet because of all the Halloween treats that the kids will end up having tomorrow, it would be too much!!

Also love that you're researching antique farm doors , very niche Grin

I did manage to sort some of ds clothes but didn't finish the job. Went out for a posh coffee instead BrewSmile

Stilllivinginazoo · 30/10/2019 16:21

Lunch was very pleasant, esp the company.lil zoo really enjoyed seeing her friend!
I've done both headbands, lil zoo sash and hem at bottom.need hem top...then do all hemming on her freak show twins dress.....

PsychoSmirk · 30/10/2019 17:52

.

Thanks for delicious virtual bakes Foxes and Zoo (I was brought up on soda bread Foxes!) I wish I could say that I had earned them but found it hard to get motivated today! Only managed some laundry, the bathroom, hall, downstairs cloak room and 30 mins in boudoir (ongoing) ...which leaves stairs, kitchen, sitting room, TV room, and more laundry tomorrow plus need to make a beef stew with trimmings, some cheese-muffin- bites things and possibly some soup - all by 1pm tomorrow for the returning troops! Oh well!

Foxes strictly speaking, I am looking for metal chassis for barn doors which doesn't sound quite as romantic! Need to raid an old factory or something! Posh coffee sounds good!

Zoo I am trying to eat as little as poss while everyone away + cba to cook! Glad Lil'Zoo had a good time! Think this year is the first I haven't made or assembled a Halloween costume in about 13 years!

Thanks for setting up new thread Ghoulette. Your work sounds very full on atm. Hope thread running doesn't add to your work stress - don't hesitate to shout if you need back up - especially if travelling or during settling in period, I can carry on for a bit if that would help.

Ghoulette1740 · 30/10/2019 19:35

Thanks very much SC but I think the thread will take my mind off things. Husband is travelling this month not me thankfully.

I hope I don't drop the ball - you're a hard act to follow!

idontdance · 30/10/2019 20:54

Could I join please? There’s 5 of us in a tiny 2 bed house, 3 boys aged 3-5 in one room, so our house can get really cluttered. And I’d like to sort it out for once

PsychoSmirk · 30/10/2019 21:08

Very kind Ghoulette but I felt I was a rather distracted thread leader this month! I've seen my DH for just three or four days (and then we had guests) during October so sympathise re: absent oh! And infuriatingly, he always phones when there are other people around so I don't get to chat privately with him either. (Does anyone else's DH/DP do this, or is it just mine? If I ask him to call when he is alone, he assumes there is some sort of emergency! He just doesn't get it ... gggrrrrrrr. )

Back to Flying, I have done another hour or so in boudoir.

PsychoSmirk · 30/10/2019 21:12

Great to have you with us Idontdance! It sounds as though you have a lot on your plate. We will be moving to a new thread on November 1st, linked by Ghoulette (who will be thread-leading) below. Any Q's, don't hesitate to ask!

Ghoulette1740 · 30/10/2019 23:43

Idontdance welcome!
