Part 7 of the decluttering challenge - can you get rid of one item a day?

StealthNinjaMum · 06/03/2019 12:16

Back again!

A group of mumsnetters have been emptying our homes, gradually decluttering our homes by getting rid of one item a day.

We’re very green and like to recycle, sell, give away and sometimes eat our clutter I’m still alive after the 8 year old gherkins.

Newbies are welcome to join us. We just get rid one thing and come back to update everyone on our progress, get support when it gets hard, and suggest new household systems and ways of doing things.

The most exciting thread on mumsnet. In this thread @SandandSea will tell us what she’s going to do with her big plastic sheet…..

Weeding has been going on here too.

Also out: some ood cat meds and an old cat collar.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 01/06/2019 15:28

Congratulations Woggle!

We now know exactly where we are moving too and have details of our new house. Nearly twice the size of our current one. And so many cupboards... Hoarder heaven! Must try not to buy too much furniture...

gassylady · 01/06/2019 17:27

Some more old blurry or unknown landscape photos gone. Bag to charity shop and two empty storage crates too. Did buy three kids books in there but more out than inGrinSounds like a dangerous situation “Around” is that a military posting apologies if you said ages back

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 01/06/2019 17:46

It is Gassylady... No secret but I don't advertise it (but easy enough to work out if you are familiar with the system).

PurpleFrog · 01/06/2019 19:18

Congratulations, Woggle! With that size of baby I'm amazed you have been able to do anything at all over the past few weeks!

Today I have dropped off a small bag of clothing at the Salvation Army collection bin at Tesco. It was all stuff that wasn't in the great condition I usually give to a Charity shop to sell but much better than rags. I have also sold another item on eBay which I am just about to parcel up. I now have a fair amount of stuff earmarked for charity, so plan to get that sorted and boxed/bagged this weekend. Some of the ornaments need a wash, so I'll do that tomorrow morning.

gassylady · 01/06/2019 20:46

Good luck with the move “Around” military packers I know pack with military efficiency 👍😬 avoid the temptation to fill all that lovely space though. Have noticed some outgrown kids trainers in the hall, they can be tomorrow’s out.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 01/06/2019 20:57

Fifth move in nine years. I'm a practiced hand. I also know the location of our 2020 move!

lljkk · 01/06/2019 21:01

Bag to charity shop today :).
We still have So.Much.Stuff.

CruCru · 02/06/2019 20:07

Congratulations WoogleCone!

Today I sorted out the drawers in my children's rooms and refolded all their stuff so they can see it. I also went through a load of hand me down stuff from a friend and separated what we're keeping, what we're giving away and what we're putting aside until my daughter is bigger.

Hello all, back from our half term away. Feeling quite energised about decluttering after a week with just essential stuff but we'll see how long that lasts! I'm trying to get back on top of the laundry so no outs as yet, but did discover a bag for charity shop in my boot so will drop that off this week.

Congratulations @Wooglecone. That is a big baby! Hope that you are doing well.

I'm not sure I could get used to moving that often 80moves. We're currently discussing whether we should move a bit closer to DD's school and the big push to staying put is I'm not sure I can cope with another move! Will be nice if you have more space though.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 03/06/2019 14:56

This is actually our sixth move as a couple. I forgot the initial move abroad after the wedding. We sort of like it... We've lived some interesting places. But happy to be going back to the UK for a while. (At least three years).

Kids school books.. what do you keep? With their school closing they are bringing home a lot of stuff...

WoogleCone · 03/06/2019 15:44

Thanks so much everyone, it was quite the experience! Shes wonderful though, shes been a really easy going baby so far which has given me a good opportunity to start healing.
Going to go for a little walk soon, DH picking DD up from nursery so I'm going to do a little of the way with him.

As shes so huge she doesn't fit any of the newborn clothes my friend gave us, they're thinking about TTC in a few months so will talk to her about if she wants them back. Also by then I'll be able to offer her lots of stuff too!

I'll forward think my decluttering for a while :)

PurpleFrog · 03/06/2019 16:01

Woogle - I think theoretical decluttering is an important step. It definitely speeds up the practical bit when you come to actually do it!

For once, I actually did what I intended yesterday. I washed some ornaments and some small toys, and bubble wrapped the breakable bits once they were dry and put them in suitable boxes for charity. I added some more stuff from a pile in our room. I have started collections for 2 different shops but I'm not rushing to drop them off this week, so intend to get more bits in the boxes over the next few nights. I also dropped off my eBay parcel at the PO this morning.

SandAndSea · 03/06/2019 18:47

I've been continuing with my filing. It's more of a reorganisation really. It's going OK. My new file boxes are a big improvement on all the mismatching files which I had previously. They may not be as easy to use, but they look much better.

Only one out today: an A4 booklet which I've been hoarding for around 15 years.

lljkk · 03/06/2019 19:30

1 hat & 1 book into the charity shop pile. :)

everythingisginandroses · 03/06/2019 20:57

Today: just 2 school jumpers. One marker-pen stained, had already replaced but forgot to discard, the other is some other child's but is not labelled, so in Y6 with 7 wks of term left didn't seem much point in handing it in to lost property.

SandAndSea · 04/06/2019 10:26

Out: a CD. It may not be much but it's something.

CruCru · 04/06/2019 10:44

I’m sending a jumper I ordered back to the shop.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 04/06/2019 11:40

This morning...
2 boxes of clothes for charity
Half a box of toys for charity (so far) plus some more just waiting to see if friends want them
Halfway through sorting box of paperwork.

WoogleCone · 04/06/2019 14:09

DD2s drawers reorganised this morning so all the stuff that was donated to us thats too small is all neatly together in one drawer. I'm seeing that friend at the weekend so I'll ask her what she wants to do then.

Also did some life admin, cleared out three email inboxes and redid the budget spreadsheet that I weirdly prefer to hand write out than do on the computer.

I think that's enough for today, might go for a bath now!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 04/06/2019 14:21

Three hole punches in the stationary box... Two now gone

lljkk · 04/06/2019 19:08

Sold some skates on Ebay. :)

SandAndSea · 05/06/2019 21:56

Today's items:

2 dresses, a DVD, a mug, some packaging and a print out.
