Part 7 of the decluttering challenge - can you get rid of one item a day?

StealthNinjaMum · 06/03/2019 12:16

Back again!

A group of mumsnetters have been emptying our homes, gradually decluttering our homes by getting rid of one item a day.

We’re very green and like to recycle, sell, give away and sometimes eat our clutter I’m still alive after the 8 year old gherkins.

Newbies are welcome to join us. We just get rid one thing and come back to update everyone on our progress, get support when it gets hard, and suggest new household systems and ways of doing things.

The most exciting thread on mumsnet. In this thread @SandandSea will tell us what she’s going to do with her big plastic sheet…..

I'm trying to get the motivation to dismantle an old bed. The replacement is cluttering up the living room.

I'm ashamed to say we've had more Ins than ours. Neighbours are emigrating and as well as the bed they've given us loads of garden pots (ceramic ones), garden decorations, bench etc.

I have packed half a box of stuff for the move as well... DH had to clear his office of artwork.

WoogleCone · 22/05/2019 15:56

No door today but I have made a carrot cake for DHs birthday.

That and we're potty training atm so I've been on backside watch 😂
I'm not convinced she has a clue what it means but we're getting through a lot of very small knickers!

Peridot1 · 22/05/2019 16:12

You all sound very productive.

I did my random skin care bits this afternoon. Filled a carrier bag. Straight into bin.

Three loads of washing. Need to iron a shirt for DS.

Took some trousers to dry cleaners and picked up a bag of duvet covers which had been washed and ironed. Can change my bed tomorrow now!

That’s me done for the day.

CruCru · 22/05/2019 16:49

Today I put a load of papers into the recycling / shredder. I also sorted my degree / a level / gcse etc certificates.

I went through all my clothes and now have four bags to go to the charity shop. My drawers are now tidy and I don’t have any pile of clothes on the chair.

RaspberryBlonde · 22/05/2019 18:41

One of the reasons I need to sort our paperwork is that my degree certificate is nowhere to be found CruCru. I have all my other exam certificates and the results letter I got when I sat my finals but no certificate. Goodness knows why it’s not with everything else as it’s years since I’ve needed it.

A few small bits today...got a few more bits off the study desk into ring binders (mostly belonging to DH so couldn’t actually get rid). I also went through a kitchen cupboard while waiting for the kettle to boil and chucked a couple of forgotten packets of dried fruit which had transitioned from ‘dry’ to ‘inedible’.

I have cake envy Woogle! Hope you aren’t too fed up with potty training.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 22/05/2019 18:50

Bedframe in bits in garden.
All of the stuff DD was keeping under the bed sorted (I now know where she keeps her socks!)
Putting together new frame is job for tomorrow.

SandAndSea · 22/05/2019 20:41

Willow - I've got to admit, I haven't done the dusting or filing yet! The reason is... well, the reason I'm telling myself is, that I've got someone coming over Friday, so I'm going to blitz it tomorrow. That's the plan anyway.

Instead, I'm counting a lot of... hair removal. Grin I've also been through my bathroom cupboard and am throwing (recycling) a tub, a plastic pouch, a spatula, a plastic razor holder and a packet.

And... wait for it... TWO boxes!!! Woo-hoooo!!!!

CruCru · 23/05/2019 11:02

I do still have a load of notes to sort through, RaspberryBlonde. I need to update my CV (current one is 11 years old) and have to remind myself what my last two jobs were about (currently on a career break).

PenelopeFlintstone · 23/05/2019 12:04

RaspberryBlonde GreenWillow
Thanks both of you. And thanks also for praising my cunning plan Grin
Yes, a friend of mine said that too. I think I should Google tips on staying close when apart. I should see him several times a week though. The drive is 45 minutes but the school bus is 2 hours each way.

TailsoftheManyPaws · 23/05/2019 13:52

I have decluttered... a French horn!

SandAndSea · 23/05/2019 21:07

I've started the filing. It's an effing nightmare!! The bedroom is full of files and boxes. They're everywhere!!

I have found a small wadge of papers which can go - a phone account from over 7 years ago.

And a leaflet.

That's it so far.

Did I mention it's a nightmare??!!

TailsoftheManyPaws · 23/05/2019 22:11

Oh god, paperwork. I'm often tempted by the thought of a small house fire at that point.

PenelopeFlintstone · 23/05/2019 22:42

SandandSea - I've not yet done my five hours in the office, as set by StealthNinja. Is yours sorted into years yet? If not, use that bed to build those tall, tall piles.
Here's that link again:

PenelopeFlintstone · 23/05/2019 22:47

Tailsofthemanypaws - what a great idea!

SandAndSea · 23/05/2019 23:01

Penelope - A lot of it is filed already in ring binders. I've decided that they take up too much room though, so I'm trying to work out how to re-file them efficiently. My new boxes arrived today, which are fab! I've just got to keep going.

Flyingsouthwiththeswallows · 23/05/2019 23:05

WoggleCone am so impressed with your perseverence. I have two wardrobe doors that have just been fitted and need painting. I just can’t summon the energy to start.

Two Topiary trees for me today. I inherited them when I bought the house and managed to pursuade my neighbour she would like them because they were far too large for my courtyard garden . When I arrived home today they had gone. What a result !!!

Now I have to find someone who would like the wooden containers they stood in.

Morning everyone

Thanks flying, DH came home with a bottle of methylated spirits and some gloves for me to try hes such a romantic😂

Admittedly I haven't done a great deal on it the last couple days, I'm so freaking tired. But today is my due date!!! And I feel nothing haha! DD was a week late, praying I don't have to wait another week on this one!

Willow, I have the strangest child ever - she doesn't like any treat type things to bribe her with haha. The only kid I've ever heard of who doesn't like cake/sweets/chocs etc. We threw her in the deep end with it at nursery yesterday though and the staff were great saying that although she had accidents, she was showing some awareness of what had happened so I'm counting that as progress.

My phone was due for renewal so I'm picking the new one up today, got a good trade in too so this one won't end up in a drawer somewhere! Preventative decluttering 😁

I did get rid of a couple of glasses yesterday, cupboard got a bit full.
And I hate the odd nature of our collection!

Will aim to report in later, we'll see what the day brings!

Peridot1 · 24/05/2019 08:12

Exciting Woogle! When baby arrives do we count it as an in or an out?obv it’s out if you but definitely in to the house! Grin. Fingers crossed you go soon.

I did a bit more in my bedroom yesterday. Sorted and washed lots of summer stuff. I have a lot of summer clothes. More than I thought. Between that and bedding yesterday I did five loads of washing.

Changed my bed and wanted to switch to my summer weight duvet. Except I couldn’t find it. Had a horrible feeling I decluttered it accidentally. So I nipped to HomeSense to get one. Came back and decided to just check again if I could find the original. And there it was. In a vacuum sealed bag on the spare bed. So now I have to return the new one.

A bag of clothes I bagged up last week went yesterday and I started a new bag so hopefully that will get finished and out over the weekend.

I also have a pile of books to go to a friend so need to arrange to see her.

PenelopeFlintstone · 24/05/2019 09:13

So now I have to return the new one. At least you can, Peridot! {smile}

SandAndSea · 24/05/2019 11:34

I'm ignoring my boxes as I've got other things to do today but, I have got an out: we're replacing our old twin phones (with very hard to press buttons and one phone that doesn't work anymore) with a new, single phone. It'll be one less thing on display upstairs, which pleases me greatly.

SandAndSea · 24/05/2019 15:04

My plans changed a bit so I did a bit more filing after all. 4 horrible, mismatching ring binders and a box file are now empty - 4 of them will be going out.

Also out is one of those teeth squirting gadgets. It's quite bulky and has sprung a leak so, it's going!

SandAndSea · 24/05/2019 15:06

I'm just loving my bathroom windowsill without the bulky gadget! Grin

CruCru · 24/05/2019 16:54

Sounds like you’ve all got loads done. Yesterday I took four bags of clothes to the charity shop.

Today I bagged up a load of change I’d found around the house, paid it into the bank and took a couple more things I’d missed to the charity shop.
