Part 7 of the decluttering challenge - can you get rid of one item a day?

StealthNinjaMum · 06/03/2019 12:16

Back again!

A group of mumsnetters have been emptying our homes, gradually decluttering our homes by getting rid of one item a day.

We’re very green and like to recycle, sell, give away and sometimes eat our clutter I’m still alive after the 8 year old gherkins.

Newbies are welcome to join us. We just get rid one thing and come back to update everyone on our progress, get support when it gets hard, and suggest new household systems and ways of doing things.

The most exciting thread on mumsnet. In this thread @SandandSea will tell us what she’s going to do with her big plastic sheet…..

Previous thread is here

Currently debating whether or not I can still eat the spare Christmas cake from 2017. It has quite thick royal icing, but has just been loosely wrapped in cling film in one of said kitchen cupboards...

PurpleFrog · 08/03/2019 10:05

I'm not sure how you even manage to keep a Christmas cake all that time.... Grin

I defrosted 3 thin pork steaks yesterday from the freezer, and made a stir fry with them. They were just slightly younger than your Christmas cake. I chucked out some other things from the freezer that we are definitely not going to eat. Since it is bin day today, I also got rid of the black binbag which has been sitting on the landing. It was between and a third full.

PurpleFrog · 08/03/2019 10:06

That should have said between a third and a half full!

Mrsoh39 · 08/03/2019 10:40

I seem to always fall off threads, i'm re joining as my house is starting to really annoy me and I really want less things.

So today I am finally get of 2 bags of clothes and 1 bag of shoes, they are going to a family friend, so that's about 40 items leaving today Grin

vroc81 · 08/03/2019 10:51

Ooh well reminded go get something out freezer for dinner...

I tidied up two clothes drawers and put a few tops out the other night, put a fleece on this morning remembered why I don’t like it and added that to the charity bag and the in-laws have just collected DD to give me some rare peace on my day off so I’ve sorted out her toys but unfortunately two bags out probably won’t equal the in on her imminent birthday..

SandAndSea · 08/03/2019 12:03

I'm still trying to clear our enormous pile of laundry. The 5th load today is about to go in. I'm planning a charity run later too.

SandAndSea · 08/03/2019 12:04

Just to clarify: there will be no running. Grin

PurpleFrog · 08/03/2019 12:07

I also got rid of this yesterday! Grin

Ahh, I like his little face. Very cute.

PurpleFrog · 08/03/2019 12:25

The ex-cactus is in the brown bin. The compost is in the garden. The plant pot has joined some friends in a pile by the shed, and the gnome pot holder is sitting beside the sink ready to wash for a charity shop. His hat is quite faded but the rest seems OK. He is fibreglass not ceramic so I will see how he looks after he is clean before making a final decision how to get rid of him.

Mrsoh39 · 08/03/2019 12:33

Clothes and shoes have gone, about to take puppy to the field to clear some of her energy.

Wow, great progress everyone! Not much out here other than a few inches of paper. Huge amounts in the to people very kindly giving me stuff for the baby, and clearing relatives house.

PurpleFrog · 08/03/2019 13:45

IWillWearTheGreenWillow On no! I hope the damage is not too bad. Fingers crossed you can save most of it. You can freeze stuff to get rid of eggs etc, but that depends on how much spare freezer space you have.

That reminds me - I bought some moth traps and moth prevention stuff last time I was in a Lakeland. I really should put it into action as I suspect we have some moths too. (And I really don't want to have to bin any of my fabric and yarn stashes.... Sad )

StealthNinjaMum · 08/03/2019 14:10

That's a shame motherwol that would annoy me.

Pippistrelle that's my kind of decluttering. Wish I knew you in real life.

Wooglecone I'm jealous. And well done for finishing the drawers, I love a good finished project (as opposed to mine that I never finish).

I would eat the Christmas cake. But then I eat all kinds of gone off food and so far have not been ill.

GreenWillow let's hope they haven't damaged too much stuff, moths can be awful,

Goodbye Mr Gnome

I have decluttered my body hair because I have a date on Monday but I am very nervous about it.

I have also gone through dd2s underwear and thrown out a few pairs of knickers where the elastic is starting to come through and put one of my tops in my clothes disposal pile which is somewhat of a mountain now! I really must get rid of them.

Ooo, Stealth , how exciting!! I'm sure we'll all be thinking of you and hoping you have a really lovely time.

SandAndSea · 08/03/2019 17:42

I've done a load of laundry and taken a couple of sacks to the charity shop.

Today's items are an old pair of knickers and a frayed bath towel (which has gone to an animal charity).

gassylady · 08/03/2019 19:49

Not much progress here as visiting very poorly relative and just getting by the priority for now. Just checking in to try and regain my decluttering mojo

Thanks stealth! And have a wonderful time on Monday, very exciting!

Sorry about your fabric willow, it's horrid when that happens. R.I.P tweed Sad

MrsElf · 08/03/2019 22:37

Not to worry stealth, I am not suffering any ill effects! The cake was every bit as disappointing as I feared, and the marzipan was decidedly unpleasant, so the remains have been decluttered to the bird table.
DDog, on the other hand, clearly enjoyed the 3 year old freezer burnt pork topping on his dinner, and as he is equally unafflicted with aftereffects, I will use the other piece in a stir fry tomorrow. He caused a cushion to be decluttered to the rag bag, so I felt justified in the experiment.
Greenwillow moths are evil. Is there enough tweed left to make lavender bags, as a kind of posthumous revenge?

MsAwesomeDragon · 08/03/2019 22:49

Hi, I was on the last thread, or maybe the one before that. My decluttering has stalled massively as life got in the way for a few weeks now. In fact, the room I was happiest with, the dining room, is now back to being "the dumping room". Dh's uncle died and his house needed to be cleared, so in spite of my protestations we've inherited 10 black sacks of clutter 😣😣😣😣 I've told DH he has to go through it and get rid of stuff, but he's looking at dvds saying "these are still in their wrapper, they're great". I'm looking at them thinking "we've got Netflix and Amazon prime, when on earth do we ever watch a dvd these days?"

We've also brought more stuff into the house because we decorated dd2's room for her birthday. So new lampshade and curtains means I've got to get rid of the old ones. And I just don't have time to sort it this weekend because there's a birthday party happening in my house tomorrow. Plan for now is to hide all in the "dumping room"/dining room and shut the door for this weekend, then do a proper car load to charity on Thursday (because my mum's coming to visit and she'll take it all to the charity shop she volunteers in).

PenelopeFlintstone · 09/03/2019 01:06

MrsAwesomeDragon - I think we ALL need a mum who works in a charity shop and takes our decluttered stuff away Grin Getting it out of the house is a job in itself.

RaspberryBlonde · 09/03/2019 04:53

Big bag of baby clothes returned to the person who lent them yesterday. Today I’m going to have a look through the freezer as I’m planning a week of decluttering meals.

Hope clearing out the fabric stash isn’t too disappointing Willow. We inherited moths when we moved to our current house and ended up with a lot of holes jumpers as we didn’t realise straight away.

MrsElf you’ve reminded me we must finish our Christmas cake!

How exciting Stealth. Fingers crossed it goes well.

Posting at this ridiculous hour as have a wide awake DS who is happy enough on my lap but wails every time I put him back in the cot. He’s been awake an hour so think today will be a long day...
