New home for the new year - still getting rid of one item a day part 6

StealthNinjaMum · 29/12/2018 10:28

Here we are again!

Little by little a group of mums netters have been decluttering our homes by getting rid of one item a day. Whether we eat it, bin it, recycle it, sell or give it away we are slowly tidying our homes.

Is this the thread where we finish? Probably not

As usual newbies are welcome to join us. We get rid of one thing and come back to update everyone on our progress and get support when it gets hard.

Previous thread is here

Not a huge amount today but I'm still going. I've also had some interest in a couple of my larger sale items - the buyer wanted to collect tomorrow but hasn't confirmed yet. I'm crossing fingers that she's still interested so I can get them out of my way.

abitoflight · 27/01/2019 23:52

Anyone else got a ton of cables? Erghh
DH does all installing of electrical stuff and seems to keep every wire but it's beyond a joke. I've got a massive box of the stuff and a study drawer full of black cables. I'm going to get him at those tomorrow
Despite this, never seem to have right female/male cables for aerials with new tv's 🙄

StealthNinjaMum · 28/01/2019 09:03

Thanks everyone. I have got rid of a massive 12 stone lump of fat and uselessness and a lot of his crap. Because he is such a hoarder his stuff won't fit in his new flat so he'll still have his mancave here for a bit and I guess he will need to declutter gradually. Had he treated me better I'd have helped but actually he can wallow in his shit for a while and work out where the dump is and where charity shops are.

I am now working on a massive to do list while looking at the one I did last Monday. I completed all jobs other than one. Think I might do a bit of painting today. I am also getting rid of a cardigan stbexh gave me.

pippistrelle I only own 8 pairs of socks. I kind of felt uneasy about it but so far have not run out. I probably have 10 pairs of tights too. How have I spent my entire adult life not realising how little of this stuff I need?

Welcome karbb that sounds like you've go a lot on and congratulations on the baby! Yay another thread baby.

abitofflight yes we have lots of cables. A few months ago I sorted out a drawer of doom in the bedroom which had old phones and cameras and cables. I bought these and started to label the cables

www.amazon.co.uk/SIQUK-Pieces-Colorful-Self-Locking-Management/dp/B07H26CHGJ/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=tags+for+cables&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1548666773&sr=8-7

I haven't finished but I have recently bought new cables and so this week I'm intending to put these tags on to those. Many people would look at the cables and know what they are by looking at them but I don't so it'll help me enormously.

Congratulations Keiki, that's great news!

Stealth it sounds like you're handling this really well, it's tough now but it will get better.

Today has not got off to a great start - on Friday our landlord let us know that they'd be coming round on wednesday to replace our (old, drafty) windows. A bit short notice, and we'll need to work out what to do with the cat and DD (3), but fine. This morning at 8am there's a knock on the door, and it's the workmen! So DH has to move furniture while I try to get us all dressed and off to work. Hopefully moving some of the clutter will be a step towards realising we can get rid of it.

gassylady · 28/01/2019 10:26

Stay strong stealth definitely leave him to sort his own treasures out. I hope one of the jobs you did tick off your list was to find the divorce lawyer.

Yet more socks for the rag bag! as washing baskets are empty I can have a count of how many pairs we all have. We must be hurtling down towards eight each also Smile

Two packablecwatwrproof jackets for charity bag - never remember to take them on a day trip

Battenburg1978 · 28/01/2019 10:49

Yesterday I got rid of DDs upstairs nappy bin (unfortunately it went in the rubbish - I offered it for free online but no takers) and sorted out knickers to go in to clothes recycling bag, 3 tops to go to the charity shop and holey tights for the recycling bag.

We had an incoming though as bought a sideboard on eBay! This will give some much needed storage space in the living room and DDs downstairs toys will go in there so things will be less cluttered overall. Planning to 'rotate' toys from upstairs to downstairs to get her playing with things more.

Also 'decluttered' 3 bags of manly parsnips from the fridge (from Christmas!) into a yummy parsnip soup for lunches this week :)

Battenburg1978 · 28/01/2019 10:50

Congratulations Keiki!!!! Awww brand new baby :)

AbbieLexie · 28/01/2019 10:57

Very excited as someone on freegle is looking for old tins of paint and varnish. Confirmed with her this is what she is looking for. My task over the next few days is to locate all the opened tins ready for her to collect.
Not on the to do list but it will clear some space. Decluttering continues. Started well this year. DP flipped a switch and has cleared a lot out but his cubbyhole still has a long way to go. The empty boxes which were kept just in case were over a metre high but are all recycled now. A bag off to the charity shop this afternoon.

abitoflight · 28/01/2019 11:21

Stealth great idea ty 😄

SandAndSea · 28/01/2019 14:18

Today's items: a holey sock and a too-large, spare duvet holder thing. It was one of those online purchases which I never would have made in real life. It's been stuffed in my wardrobe, never used, for about 2 years.

I'm now trying to rescue a vase and some beads which are covered in wax whilst also getting on top of my utilities. Horrible jobs!

SandAndSea · 28/01/2019 16:49

A very boring afternoon looking at energy comparison sites etc. It looks like I'm going to save about £100pa though so worth doing I reckon.

I've also decided to charity the vase I've cleaned up - it almost sparks joy but is also kinda annoying, so it's going.

Mumof1DS · 28/01/2019 21:54

@sandandsea - better £100 in your pocket than theirs!

Decluttered my sock drawer tonight. Threw out a few pairs of socks that developed the paw print look. Also threw out a load of old skin colour tights from pre pregnancy. They're horrible looking, from one of those multipacks from Asda Blush. When the nice weather comes around again, i shall get some nicer. I kept all my thick black ones... They're like a uniform Grin keep my legs warm on these cold, winter commutes!
Have found a multipacks of walking socks unopened for the charity shop.
Feeling like I've made some progress even though i just wanted to go to bed! Pleased with that.

OublietteBravo · 28/01/2019 21:56

A box that a trophy came in (in 2017) into the recycling, and some worn out socks into the ragbag. Plus I finally decluttered the last of the Christmas chocolate.

MsAwesomeDragon · 28/01/2019 22:48

A charity bag came through the door so I filled it. It only took a few minutes to find enough stuff to fill it up to go out in the morning. It's now overflowing with 2 pairs of trousers that don't fit, 2 handbags I never use (both gifts from mil who doesn't realise I don't use handbags), a few soft toys and a lampshade. Quite good going I thought.

Dd's bag of stuff to sell at Brownies (I really hope she actually realises it's not real money!) Is growing. She's added 3 more soft toys and a pile of books that she loved but is unlikely to reread. She's becoming quite ruthless in her decluttering, although not when it comes to toys Hmm, they're all her favourites apparently.

reallyanothername · 29/01/2019 10:08

An old sheet and a broken toy out today

SandAndSea · 29/01/2019 11:46

I've switched utility supplier and saved over £100 (making a total of around £300 saved for the year so far). I'm so relieved to be ticking that off my list.

StealthNinjaMum · 29/01/2019 12:00

A big bag of stuff gone to the charity shop - all stuff I've mentioned before (breadbin, scales, books, cardigan).

This afternoon I intend to go through a box of doom that is stbexhs paperwork and remove bank statements and anything useful and bag up his things. Stbexh never opened his post so this box will be full of old catalogues, junk mail, statements. It is in one of my wardrobes - so well hidden but still annoying me.

Thank you everyone! I'd forgotten how hard the newborn phase is. Barely getting any washing done let alone decluttering at the moment. Well done everyone else, can't wait to get going again.

Wishing you strength Stealth

gassylady · 29/01/2019 19:22

Today’s items for the charity bag: pair kids slippers (unworn), three i-spy books, travel game we no longer use. Old squashed copper bracelet for scrap metal box

MsAwesomeDragon · 29/01/2019 19:33

My items for today. Dd's bag of stuff that she sold at Brownies. She took a big bag of books/small toys and only brought back one book and a bouncy ball. So that's a win. She also came back with nails painted and glittery hair, so she's very pleased with her trading too.

My stuff: two pairs of kids slippers too small now, 3 textbooks to school.

chloechloe · 29/01/2019 20:50

Enjoy the newborn snuggles keiki while they last. DC3 is 2 months now and already past the milk drunk stage!

I’m thinking of you stealth - hopefully things will be easier now that he’s moved out. You’re incredibly strong.

I’m still plodding through cleaning out the kitchen - one side of it has been decluttered and is looking great. Soon I will have to tackle the drawer of doom though which I’m not looking forward to!

In the last few days I’ve ditched some holey kids’ socks, 2 bath toys showing signs of mould inside (I hate bath toys!) and have finished a few beauty products. My 2 year old also decluttered a plate - she very helpfully put the peel off a mandarin she’d eaten into the bin together with the plate 😂.

vroc81 · 29/01/2019 22:45

Dragon sounds like success for the Brownie sale!

My guests have gone and am back on it.. some trousers and a fleece into the charity bag that arrived and after a brief wardrobe tidy some broken or bent coat hangers and some paperwork!

WoogleCone · 30/01/2019 12:53

Afternoon all.

I seem to be stalling a little bit, need to refocus I think. I've just put two pairs of shoes on facebook, fingers crossed those will count for this week.
Meeting a friend shortly who has a book for DH from her DH. This is the opposite to getting rid haha!
