New home for the new year - still getting rid of one item a day part 6

Here we are again!

Little by little a group of mums netters have been decluttering our homes by getting rid of one item a day. Whether we eat it, bin it, recycle it, sell or give it away we are slowly tidying our homes.

Is this the thread where we finish? Probably not

As usual newbies are welcome to join us. We get rid of one thing and come back to update everyone on our progress and get support when it gets hard.

Previous thread is here

Having a bit of a problem at the moment with DH's stuff. I've decluttered as much as I can of stuff that belongs to me, but now many of the boxes, bags and piles that crowd the flat are DH's, and I really can't do anything about them. On the one hand, my efforts mean there's space in the cupboards for this stuff to go, so it's at least off the floor, but on the other, it's really frustrating for me to have all this energy to tackle things, but not be able to do anything about it. And all the while I'm picking my way around woodworking tools and broken musical equipment...

Today's outs so far:

A DVD.
A CD.
A medicine cup.
Some wax - heated out of a coaster and a candlestick.
Some old, too small, cake candles. The rest are now organised in a container.
A ks duvet cover which has been well used as a dust sheet, is going for rags.

SandAndSea · 05/03/2019 16:45

Debating: I have 2 icing sets (the tools for icing cakes). I've never used either of them. I do want to though...

WoogleCone · 05/03/2019 17:47

Thanks raspberry, she's getting there, albeit slowly!

Motherwol I'll admit that I've thrown many things of DHs away without him noticing, just slowly over the years! He never remembers the stuff.

Sand I'm the same, have icing sets that sit unused (maybe a couple times a year) but I dare to part with them 'just incase'. Also piping is very satisfying. I definitely should have piped yesterday's cake!! Ok, the next cake I bake will be piped - I must be held to this!! Grin

Managed to line the last two drawers today, aiming to get the whole unit waxed on Thurs and then it can live in its new home. I also took off the handle from the living room door that's waiting to be painted (and chucked it, gross), next project after drawers. I need to pick up the pace on these projects as I want them done well before DC2 arrives.

I know this is probably a bit too much excitement for everyone, but, I've made a decision on the icing kits! I've decided to charity the one that's still sealed in a packet as they should be able to sell it. The other is in bits but includes a wiggly attachment. (Technical term.)

More outs, including 2 biscuit cutters (one sentimental), a tatty tea towel, 2 random lids and 14 not very nice toffees.

Don’t be too hard on yourself stealth, you’ve been getting loads done most of the time, you deserve a break!

You’re lucky you can throw away stuff without your DH noticing woogle! In the kitchen clear out I ditched some chopsticks and spices and DH asked me where they were so I played stupid! We hadn’t used the chopsticks for years and then he suddenly decided he needs them. Men!

I’ve got rid if two small bags of baby clothes. I could actually get rid of a lot more but I find it difficult to give baby stuff away. I kid myself that I should sell the more expensive stuff but doubt I’ll ever get round to it, plus I’m sure it’s more hassle than it’s worth. I think I’ll just go at it in stages.

SandAndSea · 05/03/2019 23:08

Good plan, chloechloe.

I've made another decision! (It's CRAZY here today!) I've got a big plastic sheet (I think it was from a bed delivery several years ago). I hate throwing things like this away without using them a lot first but I've run out of things to use it for (I've got loads of dust sheets now). It takes up loads of room so I've finally decided to let it go. I will be as eco-friendly as possible but, it is going.

I've also filed a load of recipes which I've had hanging around for too long and I've done loads of laundry.

I'm now in the mood to do that admin job from yesterday, so I'm staying up to do it - got to ride that wave whilst I can.

@SandandSea I started writing the new thread and I was hoping you wouldn't answer your icing kit question so I could mention that this thread had a cliffhanger ending about your icing kit decision!

What am I going to say now?

motherwol that's really frustrating. Does he appreciate the extra space caused by your hard work? Can he not see that it would be beneficial to get rid of some of his stuff? My personal experience was that even stbexh - who was the real hoarder in the family - liked living with less stuff and started to follow my example and I know lots of other people on the thread have had their partners join in.

Is there anything of his you could tackle just to 'help' him? Stbexh had 2 or 3 old computers he didn't want to get rid os as he was worried about the memories being used by someone else.

In previous threads I mentioned how I moved them from the garage to the hallway to the bedroom to his pillow. Eventually I took the sides off so he could remove the memories and I took them to the dump!

Thanks chloechloe I certainly am taking it easy!

I think baby clothes is one of the things we most mention on this thread as being hard to get rid of. Mine weren't in a good enough condition to sell but it was hard to let go sentimentally. I think I did mine in stages and I have a feeling that I have now got rid of everything apart from a tiny dress that is worn by a teddy.
