If you are strugging with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, support and wine and cake along the way.

This is where, from the first of the month (seriously, HOW is it June already?!), we follow – loosely – the rules of FlyLady [see website here ]. (Pls ignore Flylady's barftastic language, and we suggest NOT signing up to her emails as there are rather a lot of them. All the info you need will be posted here on a daily basis.)

Helpful info on getting started here.

We adopt a three-pronged approach:

-start or repeat baby steps

  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone or area (yes, just 15 mins focused work a day makes a difference!)

and/or

  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

[And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.]

The launch pad is the place from which you can reach most other useful areas of the site: here.

NB
This is a very long-running thread so we may appear cliquey but we really aren't! All newcomers, long-termers, lurkers and intermittent returnees not only welcome to join in but positively encouraged to do so!

Another NB
Start where you are at!. There is no need to worry about being perfect – perfectionism = paralysis! There is no such thing as ‘falling behind’ with FlyLady, if you miss anything, just move on and continue as normal the next day.

Any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Happy Flying one and all!

Baby step no. 8 for Fri June 8th is here. Dividing newly established routines in to morning and afternoon chores and starting what will become a control journal (some of us do this and some of us don't!).

From 3-9 June we are in Zone 2 the kitchen and pantry. Spend 15 mins a day decluttering this area (and/or do a mission!).

If you are at the stage where you have finished decluttering Zone 2, here is the detailed cleaning list for the kitchen.

Friday's mission is: here. Sweeping and mopping your kitchen floor.

Friday's daily focus is: decluttering our purses/handbags/cars And it is date night apparently.

The habit for June is: keeping hydrated by drinking water regularly.

A summary of the above (which should update itself daily) can be found in the flight plan here.

Extra Star Star for Toostressy for resisting lures of Internet and to Cag for going to Badgers despite feeling below par.

Love the idea of Greek God school btw!

Good luck with shoe gate Hills!

SC having read back upthread you have served above and beyond and I would've said way less politely have a cheese sandwich or naff off out to eat and been even more marked dh didn't back you up. And when can I come to eat some of that? id help prep and wash up after

Cag surely self led is even more valuable and helping with active baby whilst you are sorting same room is reasonable

Poor lil zoo Sad
Dd2 sounds a handful zoo 😑

Just sat and worked out what i spent on food last week and this Shock last weeks was awful, bloody half term! This weeks would be ok if we had everything we need to last til next week, but we dont.

Ive been doing lots little shops here and there in cheaper shops instead of big supermarket and tbh i dunno if its saving me any money

I might actually try meal planning next week .....

Ivegotfamilyandidrinkcupsoftea · 08/06/2018 06:38

sc your guests should be taking you out for a thank you meal!

Stilllivinginazoo · 08/06/2018 07:56

I've half term costs stupid amounts
Trailing kids shopping is stressful, stuff gets forgot.extras bought(please can we have ham sandwiches for lunch)and they seem permenantly hungrySad

I trail shop to shop for cheapness, only works if you only buy necessary for a meal plan or I just spend a fortune on "oooh that's nice,I'll have that"(anyone read burglar bill bookGrin!)...

Tadas
Not killed dd2(big achievement)
Fed kits
Sorted breakfasts n lunches
Skirt around so who is underfoot, faffing and in my fucking way

I have pms.everyones getting on my last nerve
And I have a headache.brilliant...

Stilllivinginazoo · 08/06/2018 07:57

Skirt around dp (so more appropriate I guess sodding omnipresentHmm)

Ivegotfamilyandidrinkcupsoftea · 08/06/2018 08:14

I am going do a tesco online shop next week as have a £7 off coupon and then just do minimal top ups

Think i just been going in the cheap shops and buying everything lol Grin

Scoopofchaff · 08/06/2018 08:29

The cost of food is shocking here too. I try and always buy in season and have two meals a week that are veggie/lentil-weaverish which helps a bit. Also, using the freezer a bit more helps with the weekly food bill I find as not as much waste (although I don't like the texture of many frozen veg). We also eat a lot of leftovers! Have also gone from one take out supper over the weekend to once a fortnight.

Thanks for kind words re: guests. It is dh's lack of support that gets to me the most tbh (although being below par, I suppose he does have an excuse!). Also, it is a bit more stressful when you don't know when guests are leaving; but there are mutterings about them going today/tomorrow.

Zoo Burglar Bill was one of our all time favourites! Grin

Bit of excitement here last night. Was getting ready for bed with curtains partially open (we are not overlooked at back; just our garden) when I heard this strange noise, went to window partially dressed to see a drone hovering outside!! Shock It was really quite sinister! Closed the curtains sharpish!

Hope all newcomers settling in OK and are finding the system is working for them!

Have a huge ta da list from yesterday but CBA to remember/write it all down!

On to today's long list ... . Have a good one everybody!

OP posts:
HonkyWonkWoman · 08/06/2018 10:31

You will breathe a sigh of relief when your guests leave Sc, not that you don't enjoy seeing family but it's a bit too much having to cook three course meals twice a day. I stay with several of my Df who have moved abroad and we either cook together or me one day them the next. And I always insist on washing up. I just shoo them off with drinks in hand and get on with it.

There's being a good host but there's also, more importantly being a good guest!
Anyway..............

Ta da

Fed dog and cat
Clean kitchen tops and hob.
Regret throwing mop and bucket in skip before replacing them.
Vacuum kitchen
make note to buy long brush and shovel and squeegie mop.
Vacuum downstairs
Dust down stairs
Swish and swipe.

To do
Get ready to go out for lunch with Df
Buy new mop etc on way back.
Not much else, it's Friday!!!
Get a 🍷 put feet up!

foxessocks · 08/06/2018 12:34

I have a set budget for my weekly online shop and then I top up as and when I need to buy try hard to only buy the things on my list each time usually I just top up fruit milk and bread as we get through those things so quickly. The problem is as soon as I have to take a child with me I end up buying extras to keep them quiet!! If I go to Aldi I have to be careful not to think everything is cheap so I can buy extras! Grin

GoingGoingGoth · 08/06/2018 12:53

Afternoon all.
Wow, SC that drone does sound a bit creepy.

Today I have set myself the task of renovating a bench we rescued last year. I've got most of the bolts out, need help from DH with the last 2 as WD40 and cursing didn't work. Have sanded down the 7 wooden slats I've removed, so need to coat them in cuprinol. Then once last bolts are out need to sand metal frame and spray with metal paint (that's the bit I'm really looking forward to)

Other Ta-dahs
Fed cat
Breakfast
Washing up (from last night's dinner)
DD to school
Shopping

foxessocks · 08/06/2018 13:35

Ta da
Dishwasher on
Washing on
Lunch made for dc

Ds had screaming fit at naptime but he is finally asleep , annoying as we are going out later so will end up having to wake him back up Hmm

To do
Finish daily routine
Swish and swipe bathroom
15 minutes decluttering kitchen
Declutter bag purse car
Sweep and mop kitchen floor

Scoopofchaff · 08/06/2018 14:49

Well done everyone; you all sound really busy!

I feel so tired this afternoon (have been going to bed at 1am most nights because of guests and getting up at 6am for DD) that I literally think I am going to puke!

Yes indeed Honkywonkwoman there is an art to being a good guest! My family (with notable exceptions) are like you and help out/muck in. I've noticed very uncharitably that dh's family have plenty of opinions and views on how things should be done but they never physically exert themselves. One commented in a rather superior manner the other day that I looked red in the face after I had hoovered and cleaned her room in 28 degree heat! Well yes, duh ... .

Enjoy the bench spraying Goth!

Foxes a set budget for the weekly shop is a fab idea and one (very stupidly) I hadn't thought of because I tend to do quick raids on the supermarket every two/three days for fresh stuff rather than one big shop ifyswim. Still no reason not to add it all up and have a set limit though! For the monthly online shop: I find the shopping bill soars if (a) we buy wine (so are cutting back) and (b) if I buy lots of cleaning materials, so trying to make do with minimum plus lots of industrial vinegar!

Cagliostro · 08/06/2018 15:19

Maybe next time DH wants to entertain his family he can actually put the effort in himself and plan, cook and clean up after all his fancy meals? Hmm Angry I get that he’s ill this time of course but it seems like a general attitude issue.

Sports club was great today, but I was getting more and more stressed as the day went on, because no phonecall. We ended up leaving a polite voicemail just to check we hadn’t missed a call etc. I was progressively getting more tense and snapping at the kids, I was totally freaking out TBH as I was thinking of all the stuff that needs doing but not being able to focus on anything. In the end I just decided to hide upstairs, I read for a bit (an old Enid Blyton book Blush :o) to calm myself down and was just dozing off when...

The phone rang!!! Viewing the property Monday morning.

OMG OMG OMG. Can’t wait. Still stressing about the amount we need to get sorted but also aware it’s the weekend so not expecting anything. Will try and catch up on the daily stuff though.

Scoopofchaff · 08/06/2018 15:58

Cag oh how exciting! That is fantastic news!!!! Roll on Monday!

And yes, although of course I don't begrudge dh having his family around him when he is off colour (you marry someone, you marry their family too sort of thing + he puts up with my very loud and very large and rather eccentric Irish family) let's just say dh's are rather intense and strait-laced! And as you say Cag it's more the fact that dh "reverts to type" when they are here, rather than them themselves ifyswim, but I can't confront him about it, because he's ill.

Anyway, must stop moaning on Grin

Ta da:
made DD lunch
made DD breakfast
ran DD to school (early exam)
made breakfast for everyone else
dog walk 1
empty dw
hang 2 loads laundry on terrace to dry
change yet another mattress cover
started huge pile calandering
served lunch (soup and sandwiches - I am scaling back!Wink)
cleared up
cleaned sink
hand washed a few bits of crockery
cleaned stove top
rubbish and recycling
cleaned bin
loaded dw with breakfast and lunch things
dog walk 2
2 loads laundry on
put 2 lots of whites to soak in Vanish
dining room table hot spots
loads more calendaring
