Keep on getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge!

After a thousand posts our homes are beautiful, decluttered places of harmony and relaxation….. or perhaps not?

We’re still trying to recycle, freecycle, sell our unwanted stuff and most of all clear out our houses, garages and sheds.

It’s easy to get involved, literally get rid of one thing a day and report back for support (and sometimes finger wagging if you’ve ‘accidentally’ bought a load of new clutter!)

Please join us and a warm welcome back to

Dining table cleared, and 6 bin bags of rubbish and 3 bags of charity just from looking in my wardrobe, ds’s room and the hallway. 😎

lljkk · 24/03/2018 21:53

happyguineapig, I reckon if the happy miracle happens, you will enjoy buying some new baby bits. Otherwise, release them for someone else to make use of. And yes, going back to baby stage when your youngest is already 5yo sounds too much for me to ever face, too!

I took a bag to charity shop today (17 small items). Listed something on Ebay, too. No.New.Clutter.

ememem84 · 24/03/2018 22:29

I’ve just come home from a night/evening out out. I wore a bright pink top that in all honesty did nothing for me. So I’m now I’m my jammies and the pink top is in the charity shop bag along with a cardigan and another top I decided had had its last days in my wardrobe. Maybe this is what I have to do. Keep a bag near the bin for charity shop stuff. And when it’s full drop it off.

StealthNinjaMum · 25/03/2018 09:51

happyguineapig I think we all find it hard to get rid of baby things especially if you don't feel finished Flowers. I would imagine that you'll be so happy if you do get pregnant that you won't mind buying new bits again or even some second hand. When I decluttered things like baby clothes I started by getting rid of the things that were dirty and uncleanable, then the unspecial things like where I bought 3 sleep suits in a pack (generic mothercare stuff) and worked my way through it until the only clothes I had were really special. I think I have ended up keeping maybe 2 or 3 baby dresses but I have no idea where they are - so as I haven't looked at them for about 3 years maybe I should find them and get rid of them.

I still have my first buggy / pram / travel system and a baby changing table so haven't quite finished with the baby stuff yet (dd2 is 7!) The baby changing table was in the Room of Doom and had a tonne of stuff on it but I have nearly emptied that room so the changing table will hopefully go in the next few weeks.

I've been pretty good at not buying extras recently, but I have got a new chest of drawers being delivered today. (I'm quite excited!) The good news is, it's really nice, a good price, recycled and solid wood. It's also roughly half the width of our current, "I've always hated it" chest of drawers so will make the bedroom look quite a bit bigger. I'm feeling quite pleased with myself as I can only do this because of all the clutter clearing I've done.

Needless-to-say, I will now be selling the old unit which is already downstairs, ready to go.

MajestyRoyal · 25/03/2018 17:55

Sand as long as the new item is going to make you happy (which it will) and is genuinely needed (which it is) then don't panic. It's nice to be surrounded by nice things Smile

I have all of the basics for my house done. But I'm now going through it room by room, taking out the 'it will do' stuff and replacing with 'I fucking love this' stuff.

I'm off, going to declutter and re arrange the medicine cabinet. It feels as though I don't even open the cupboard door but it still turns into a huge heap of vitamins, loose plasters and spare light bulbsHmm mystery!

MajestyRoyal · 25/03/2018 18:02

Oh and @happyguineapig I was the exact same. I ended up keeping all of the 'first' outfits. Take any which are really sentimental and create a memory box to give to your LO when they're older.

I absolutely hated the though of getting rid of DS's baby things but I thought if it like this - if I do go on to have another baby the things I have will be really outdated and 'old fashioned' and it would be a lot better to have nice new things for a nice new baby. The things I had weren't in use as it was selfish for me to keep them when someone's new baby could have made use of them. I sold 10 bags of baby clothes and all the other baby bits have all been listed to sell. I've sold 3 'big' things so far and it's nice to know someone's actually using them and making new memories just like I did with my child.

Cupoteap · 25/03/2018 19:09

I have just emptied 9 handbags Blushand chucked so much rubbish away

lljkk · 25/03/2018 19:30

wow, 9 handbags. I have one that I use about once a year.

I do triathlons & am trying to gear up to getting a much better suit. The one I have is not really fit for purpose (but may have some resale value).

Lunenburg · 26/03/2018 07:56

Everyone seems to be doing well this weekend.

I managed to remove 4 time-switches, and extension cable and a load of other gubbins from my baking cupboard. Also emptied out a pile of Coathangers and some 10 year old paperwork.

Am hoping the Easter weather will be perfect and I can get going on the garden next weekend.

ememem84 · 26/03/2018 08:18

Another bag for the charity shop yesterday which I’ll drop off today. I have been ruthless. I do not need 4 pairs of tan knee high boots so two have gone together with leggings (which I kept thinking I’d wear them around the hous but don’t) a couple of old seen better days dresses and some tops which just don’t suit.

Taking old cat scratcher to the tip today together with old boxes etc.

staveleymum · 26/03/2018 10:12

Sorry been busy to catch up with you all but it sounds like you are all doing so well on clearing out! I've been a bit more slow and steady, but I can't open a wardrobe or cupboard without looking for 'just one thing' to throw away or stick in a charity bag!

Managed to freecycle the old dyson I had 'just in case' (although just in case of what I dont know)! I've put my daughters old bike on facebook local selling sites so hope that goes this week (its been in my back hall for nearly a year now). I'm now tackling the pile of wool jumpers I accidentally shrunk a bit in the hope I can stretch them out a bit. If it works great, they can go back in the wardrobe - they've been on my bedroom floor for forever. If it doesn't work they can go in the rag bag or charity bag.

I'm a girl on a mission....

PurpleFrog · 26/03/2018 11:00

I have also had a good weekend. I put around 6 more things in the Charity Shop box, 2 more in the "rags for recycling bag" and dropped them off at the Charity shop on Saturday morning.

In the afternoon we disposed of all the stuff waiting in the porch to go to the recycling site, so yesterday I hoovered out the porch and put down a new Turtle Mat runner I bought recently. That, hopefully, will cover the area where the dogs get their paws dried, so should keep the carpet a bit cleaner.

Yesterday I also had a bit of a sort out of the "ironing pile". (It is not so much an ironing pile but really a pile of things that have been washed that need something else done to them before they can be put away. Sigh!) I have now put everything that needs mended in a separate pile and will find a bag for them tonight. Some of the other stuff can probably go as it has been there so long it is obviously not needed.

SandAndSea · 26/03/2018 12:28

Changing over to my new chest of drawers has brought a few more unwanted items to the surface, which is great. I've also got a buyer coming for the old unit tonight. I decided to put a higher price on it and still had a lot of interest so it's all good!

I've got family coming for Easter so I've really got to get a wriggle on now. Let the mad tidy-up commence!!

MajestyRoyal · 26/03/2018 13:32

Ended up throwing an e-cig charger, some wall plugs and a stray nail (metal one for hammering not a human nailConfused). Medicine cupboard is a lot less cluttered and I can see everything that I have.

I also put some more old baby stuff online to sell. Can't WAIT until my house is baby-crap free!

SandAndSea · 26/03/2018 19:11

I've had a really productive day today, though NO tidying so far - eek!! I have, however, sold my chest of drawers - YIPPEE!!! (I'm loving the big space where that used to be!) I've also arranged for my broken vacuum cleaner to be replaced (free under warranty) and quite a few other things have been ticked off. Star

AdaColeman · 26/03/2018 19:26

Am I too late to join in? I could certainly do with cheerful chatter and encouragement, as I feel a bit swamped ATM.

I always think that something will "come in handy" but somehow it never does....
And I collected loads of boxes and packaging materials ready to move, but then didn't move....

The place looks like a house in transit really.....

greenlanes · 26/03/2018 19:53

Hi, joining!

Yesterday I cleared out my candle, tea light and napkin boxes (yes boxes!). I gave a friend for her big party lots of napkins and metal confetti. I have tealight holders packed for the charity shop.

SandAndSea · 26/03/2018 21:24

Welcome, Ada & green! Smile

Chimichangaz · 26/03/2018 22:58

Been watching this thread for a while. Didn't think of my house as cluttered but I was wrong, so wrong! Had a good clear out of handbags at the weekend. Need to tackle wardrobes and garage. Garage hopefully this Friday, fingers crossed.

Those posting about baby stuff, I sympathise so much. I have one DS who is 16, always wanted another, and found it so hard to give away or sell baby stuff. I did do it, but it was an emotional wrench. Sending hugs (or wine or flowers) WineThanks

Gibble1 · 27/03/2018 00:06

Welcome newbies. Today I had to sew on some badges to DS’s Explorer shirt. But I’ve lost them 😱. So I raided my Cubs badge box for the basics and sewed them on and then had a mad tidy around downstairs. 1 large bag of recycling out and 1 large bag of rubbish out. Dusted the dining room and will do more tomorrow if I get a chance.
Hope my new car is ready tomorrow too.

ijustwantfiveminutespeace · 27/03/2018 00:20

Oh, I want to join. X

sandgrown · 27/03/2018 07:31

Chucked out lots of junk mail holiday brochures and catalogues. I also took the plunge and deleted thousands of e mails without checking them !

Rachyhayes · 27/03/2018 08:36

You all seem to be doing fab. Been a hectic week here but managed to get on top of the washes and hubby cleared the shed out. So have tons sitting for the dump just need to find a man with a van to take it as we don't drive I had phoned about for a quote for a skip 160quid a bit to much

SandAndSea · 27/03/2018 08:54

After my productive day yesterday, I was so excited I couldn't sleep (!), so I stayed up late and did some washing and cleaning. I've got a list for today again but no doubt I'll go 'off script', as is my way. We shall see. I have to say that, after all these months of clearing, the house is starting to look rather nice. Smile
