Keep on getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge!

After a thousand posts our homes are beautiful, decluttered places of harmony and relaxation….. or perhaps not?

We’re still trying to recycle, freecycle, sell our unwanted stuff and most of all clear out our houses, garages and sheds.

It’s easy to get involved, literally get rid of one thing a day and report back for support (and sometimes finger wagging if you’ve ‘accidentally’ bought a load of new clutter!)

Please join us and a warm welcome back to

Ninja - Get ready! Virtual kick coming up!

Why not put them all in a carrier bag and put them on the sofa? You can sort them when you're chilling later.

Good news on the toy sale though. Star

Oh Stealth! I got rid of my hoard years ago Grin everything I have now fits in my makeup bag. It's so much easier rather than rummaging around trying to chose from 20 different primers. Is it all opened? You could always donate it to a women's shelter if it's sealed stuff Smile

I can feel Spring fever on this thread. As the sun comes out, so the pace of decluttering ramps up a notch or two.

Have cleared my storecupboard this morning (I live very remotely so keep a reasonable larder) and made up a big box of the things that will go out of code in the next 6 weeks, but we just won't get to eat.

Those are off to the food bank this afternoon.

Also taking a bag of old medicines etc to the Pharmacy for disposal.

Under the sink is DONE! However even though I threw away tons and put a load in the recycling bin, I gained three things Blush but the hamster is 1000x more likely to use sawdust, food and treat sticks than we are to use a bunch of Tupperware with no lids!

My black bag from yesterday of charity has been left behind, so I've dumped it all in the one for tomorrow instead.

How's everyone else getting on today?

I managed to throw out half a loaf of nearly off bread, a bag of sprouting potatoes and a lonely clove of garlic from the pantry. It's been re arranged to look more appealing though, and each shelf is for a specific thing so I know where everything isGrin

I know it probably doesn't count as it would have been thrown out anyway but I have a nicely organised pantry to look into now

stealth re make up - I store my brushes and mascaras eyeliners in old jo Malone candle jars on my dresser. I’m working to reduce my make up stash by using it up.

Not had much chance to do anything with Work and the weather being busy. My car died at the weekend so I have to ring scrapyards tomorrow morning and see who will come and collect it- and who CAN as the electronic parking brake won’t release due to it’s death.
Waiting on finance for my new car which I hope to have with me by the end of next week.
Sold pressure cooker but the lady doesn’t drive. She is happy to wait until I have car back.
DS is having his teeth out and plate fitted tomorrow. Poor lad. And DD has a college interview tomorrow too.

Impressed with those tackling under the sink. Mine is a glory hole that takes on scary proprtions every time I open the door.

I am on a roll this week. Managed to sell two items on EBay last night. They have been listed for weeks and come into the 'people buy the strangest things' category.

The way I look at those sales is that someone gets a bargain, I get back my space and nothing ends up in landfill. Win, win !!

Well done, Lunenburg. I feel the same about eBaying - I just haven't got into gear this year yet.

I spent some time yesterday evening raking up leaves as the food/garden waste bin gets collected today. It is now full, so that will save on one future car trip to the recycling site. It has been too wet or snowy to do anything in the garden over the past few weeks. My back didn't feel like ironing afterwards, so I didn't get anything else done.

This morning I ended up with a spare 20 mins before I needed to leave for work so instead of mumsnetting I emptied out the washing basket and sorted it into piles. One load is now soaking in Biotex ready to go in the washing machine straight when I get in tonight.

Does anyone else have a collection of random bits at the bottom of the laundry basket which have been there for years? Sigh! I am determined to work my way through them over the next few weeks, and find a home for them.

I'm not brave enough to eBay yet. I know I would have to be organised and post most things and they would possibly get lost etc and I would be upset if I got a bad rating from someone. I much prefer sitting at home while people don't turn up selling from Facebook.

Thanks SandandSea. I set a timer this morning for 30 minutes as my bedroom floor still had crap all over it. I needed to clear the bathroom cabinet first and find storage solutions. Anyway I am going out now and my bedroom / ensuite look like an explosion in a pharmacist. I have thrown away things I couldn't identify (stuff from lush in paper packaging, hooks and unidentifiable bits of plastic) and put about 15 empty hay fever bottles on a tray on dhs side of the bed with a broken shaver and electric leads from about 3 broken shavers! All belong to him and have been taking up space in the bathroom. I have put all my nail stuff in two boxes. I have no idea why we have 5 sets of toe nail clippers, I have never bought any. I am probably responsible for the 50 loose plasters dotted around my bedroom / bathroom and the 40 emery boards / nail files and multiple half used packets of handbag sized tissues. Some are now in my handbag.

Purplefrog I am curious what's in the bottom of your laundry basket, it is the only area of my house that isn't a problem!

I guess I may be the only one then! Blush

From memory - in the bottom of my laundry basket I still have 2 men's ties (one silk), 2 webbing belts for Craghopper trousers, a tubigrip bandage and a white T-shirt that has been drawn on with fabric pens...

All need some sort of careful washing or preparation before washing. I have dealt with the size XS horse riding gloves that were there - they were washed last week on a delicate wash after soaking in Biotex to remove ancient traces of horse and are now in the Charity Box.

@PurpleFrog - I know what you mean about the laundry basket. Clutter can take many forms!

I've done my one thing today (some holey shorts of dp's) and am now having a big clean up and tidy. Yaay me!

DS has had his 12 week jabs today and is having himself a pity party that I must attend. So I'm not getting a great deal done today!

DH already slung his shoe cleaning stuff BACK under the sink after getting it all out. So it's untidy and full of random bits of paper and tins floating around again Angry

I'm going to try to tackle the spare room while he's napping! But honestly, I can't even see the floor of in there. I blitz it once a week and it always ends up a tip. Hopefully if I get rid of enough stuff they'll be less to throw on the floor!

Well. My contribution today is removing an old pie from the freezer and eating it 😂 I also had a bit of an inventory to see what the minimum ingredients I can buy next week to get meals out of it all.

Though it may be for nothing and I end up filling the freezer again anyway. We were supposed to find out where we were moving too next month yesterday. But they've said nothing. Again 😩

Am definitely going to try this. I mariekondo’d last year and it was fantastic for a about 6 months, but creep has occurred again now. Am going to try and tackle the dining table right now...and will amuse myself by trying to guess how many months old the oldest bit of useless paper on there will be.

My approach to Ebay StealthNinja was only to Ebay things I would be happy to buy at a price I would be happy to buy them at.

Anything slightly questionable, i.e. A picky buyer could find fault, I just send to Charity or if it is something I wouldn't want to buy there, to recycling.

Previously everything would have gone to Charity, but in the last 18 months, during some serious decluttering, I have made £1,500 Ebaying.

I always use Recorded Delivery and on the one occasion when someone was unhappy with the fit of something, I just took it back.

I use eBay a lot for buying and selling. I’ve made £300 since December selling.

I need to get back to it though. All my listings have expired so must relist.

Thanks, I think I'll look into ebay selling and will procrastinate as usual. Originally I just wanted stuff out the house immediately but so much has gone now I can take a bit more time to make money.

Lazy day today. Spent ten minutes clearing crap out of bathroom cabinets and have thrown a bag of junk out. Bathroom floor is now clear and cabinets are kind of decluttered but have about 10 empty makeup/ toiletry bags (usually the free clinique ones) that I can't seem to throw away. Floor next to my bed is still full of makeup.

I have a shed and loft full of toys/clothes/ High chairs etc that my ds has outgrown. He is now 5! I have hung on to them because I thought we might have another child but the more time has passed I've thought the idea of going back to it fills me with dread. I should just get rid of them shouldn't I? I'm 41 so unlikely to happen now anyway but can't quite bring myself to get rid...

Flagging at this end of the week.

Managed to get rid of my Daughters University Thesis (by taking it back to her), a box full of shower fittings and some old magazines.

I empathise with your make up woes StealthNinja. I used to keep all those little Clinique bags until I suddenly developed an allergy to make up. Now I just have moisturiser and an ever increasing collection of Mascara. I can usually use one for a fortnight before my eyes start puffing up.

Hi everyone !

Love this thread! I’m trying to declutter and get rid of all the junk we have accumulated! Love the timer idea and blitzing one area at a time.

We did the 2yr old’s room last week but the bags are all still sitting waiting to go to the charity shop & the recycling centre.. definitely a job for tomorrow morning!

Threw out worn out cushions (and also took unwanted newly bought unwanted cushion back for a refund). Also got rid of some random bits of cardboard.

Have also sold some books through a Facebook group - need to post them

Bins emptied. Baby clothes sorted (some for keeps in case of baby no 2, some for friend who’s expecting imminently, some for eBay and some for charity shop).

Laundry put away. All rogue paperwork gathered and put into one pile. That’s tomorrow’s job.
