Keep on getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge!

After a thousand posts our homes are beautiful, decluttered places of harmony and relaxation….. or perhaps not?

We’re still trying to recycle, freecycle, sell our unwanted stuff and most of all clear out our houses, garages and sheds.

It’s easy to get involved, literally get rid of one thing a day and report back for support (and sometimes finger wagging if you’ve ‘accidentally’ bought a load of new clutter!)

Please join us and a warm welcome back to

I'll be posting it out to you today Ada Grin

MinnieMinchkin · 02/05/2018 12:58

Thank you, Namajesty!

Forgot to mention that I bought new pants yesterday. However, when I decluttered my old ones, I discovered a rich seam of unworn pants at the bottom of the drawer! So, result: binned 12 pairs; introduced 5 new and retained about 20 pairs I already owned that have hardly ever been worn!** Seriously, who needs that many knickers?!?Confused

This afternoon I will make more progress with the office! It's a displacement activity as I have some writing I'm supposed to be finishing off!

PurpleFrog · 02/05/2018 13:02

Since the weather was OKish last night when I got home from work I spent an hour in the garden filling the garden/food waste bin. [Ours is brown not green!] The garden was a bit lot neglected last year, so there is a huge amount of stuff to get rid of, and it seems such a waste of an opportunity not to fill the bin to the brim each fortnight.

This morning I had a spare 20 mins so I cracked and removed the almost-finished shampoo bottles (that have been sitting upside down for weeks) from the bathroom and washed them out. I also washed the suncream bottles emptied the day before, and some of the other plastic and glass recycling that DP has been avoiding washing for the past week or so. That has released quite a lot of space beside the sink.

I also put a pair of holey socks in the rag bag.

AdaColeman · 02/05/2018 13:05

Cashew I've got my iced coffee glasses ready! Grin Grin

PenelopeFlintstone · 02/05/2018 13:28

@Minnie 'a rich seam' Ha ha Grin

IHateToCashew · 02/05/2018 13:34

Used up some old craft card from our wedding invites to make some table confetti Grin so that's now tidied away the in a box of decorations for the party and can go in the recycling bin after.

Listed a couple more dresses on eBay. Going to sort out my secret chocolate stash later.

SandAndSea · 02/05/2018 13:59

I have now binned a spice rack (another thing which we've been keeping, just in case, for over 10 years) and a really nice, sports-style jacket which dp doesn't want.

I've just emptied out my bag cupboard, which was bursting at the seams, and put all the bags on the floor of the living room to sort out. I tend to keep bread and veg bags for the food compost bin and cat litter - I have loads. The cat thinks it's all for her. She loves bags. Grin

LilQueenie · 02/05/2018 14:26

It feels lazy today. I've done nothing so far and have less than an hour till dd gets home. Going to attempt the following:

  1. chuck 20 items
  2. do a load of laundry
  3. get rid of some items on cloud
  4. tidy mantle piece (didnt do shelf yesterday)
  5. put folded clothes away and make bed.

seems possible.

Namajesty · 02/05/2018 14:36

Cashew I'm pretty sure the most expensive coffee in the world is made from animal shit. Just shove it on eBay and pretend it's that Grin

I'm going on the hunt to find more things to declutter. If I get rid of 10 things a day I'll have done 132 things by the 14th Shock

MinnieMinchkin · 02/05/2018 14:53

Sand, that reminds me, I have an unused spice rack somewhere!

Hmm, I have not decluttered anything, but have written a blog post. Not the blog post I was supposed to be writing, though. My displacement activities are becoming quite complex Confused

LilQueenie you can do it! All of it!

I have half an hour before the school run, so will make just one more cup of tea before returning to the office and sorting out the towers of paperwork surrounding me...

IHateToCashew · 02/05/2018 15:19

Perfectly possible Queenie!

Nama it wasn't awfully overpriced, it was 50% off in Waitrose ... though now I see why. It's actually DS's fault I bought it because he was flirting with a group of old ladies and I wanted to escape Grin panic buy!

Sorted out DS's drawers - planning ahead to the John Lewis sale so I know what I need to get. The charity shop pile is growing. Three blankets, a pile of too small socks, and some clothes I was never keen on. I've put his next2me bedding to one side, until we decide what we're doing with it. The adoption vs another baby discussion is still ongoing Smile

By the way, how do you all store your shoes? We have two racks, and no room for any of mine, so it clearly isn't working. DH has enormous feet, so we can actually only fit about 12 pairs on the shelves, half of those being work boots. Any genius ideas?

LilQueenie · 02/05/2018 15:24

did it Smile more of less. pile of dds stickers left and not sure what to do with them. got 2 hours before heading out.

  1. put dishes away
  2. do more dishes
  3. clear bunker in kitchen
  4. another laundry load
  5. find birth certificate that I need asap.
  6. clear another shelf
SandAndSea · 02/05/2018 15:32

@IHateToCashew - DP has a trunk by the front door to chuck his big, clompy shoes in, without upsetting any of my nicely kept lady shoes. Grin

I've now sorted my bags and it's officially ridiculous! I've got 5 bags-for-life full of bags and they won't fit in the cupboard.

One is heavy duty bags-for-life - heading for the car.
One is normal bags-for-life
One is normal carrier bags
One is small bread and veg bags - for the compost bin etc
One is sacks

I really don't want to bin them, but, I think I'm going to have to recycle some of the smaller ones.

What does everyone else do?

LilQueenie · 02/05/2018 15:48

I use bags for recycling then dump the bag in the bag recycle bin when done. I also use them for when people are collecting items I'm giving away/selling.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 02/05/2018 16:01

cider not sure if it's helpful now but cranberry tablets are good for uti's. I take then when I feel one coming on as a preventive measure or during to help.

sand I give then away when people collect stuff I've sold. I use bigger ones for dropping off charity shop stuff. And I make sure I always have a bag in every bag I take out, and little fold up one in my coat pocket to make sure no more come into the house 😂

Yesterday I got rid of 6 pots of cake toppers things that were 5 years out of date. A few tins and balsamic vinegar in a bag for the food bank. Took my charity shop bits today (also bought a beautiful book, lacy cardigan, Hollister shorts and pinstripe cropped trousers I was looking for) have thrown out some catalogues and junk mail as it came through the door today.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 02/05/2018 16:04

lilqueenie my dd's have an art trolley and their stickers are in a folder all together.

LilQueenie · 02/05/2018 16:11

coconuts they are left over ones from her shopkins sticker album. Might just let her stick them in her scrapbook. thanks for the idea. Will keep her busy for a bit too.

DesertIslandPenguin · 02/05/2018 16:16

@SandAndSea I took about 70% of our carrier bags to bag recycling at Sainsbury's. It was ridiculous and I eventually saw red. A huge pile of bags full of bags between the bin and the back door. And totally unhygienic too. I have insisted that DH keeps bags in his car for shopping (and puts them back into the car afterwards!!) and I have a bag of bags in my car.

Still get the occasional 5p bag coming in but I use those to collect bubble wrap, toilet paper bags etc that can be recycled at Sainsbury's.

LostMyBaubles · 02/05/2018 16:34

Cashew I can declutter your secret choc stash. You wont know you ever had it 😁

IHateToCashew · 02/05/2018 17:24

Thank you Lost Grin I'll keep that in mind.

It's mainly loads of samples my old workplace still send me. So I've got tons of rank sounding stuff that I know I won't like or bits I've nibbled at.

A trunk may be an idea! No no space in the hall though, but I'm sure I can think of somewhere to stick one if DH will go for it. It's not like I have loads of shoes, I have five pairs! Including boots! I just feel like I shouldn't have to cram them under the bed.

Decluttered half a bag of quorn and some old red lentils in a weird spag bol for tea seeing as it's just me.

Medwaymumoffour · 02/05/2018 17:45

Ok I am still off the rails here. It’s been a hard recovery fro Easter school holidays. However I give you this! I’m both ashamed and very proud I have decided to stop ignoring my emails

Keep on getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge!
Keep on getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge!
Medwaymumoffour · 02/05/2018 17:50

Obviously I have a massive hoarding problem in all areas of life 🤣 but there are no unread emails for this month now. I will get this to zero and deal with my mail everyday from now on.

I think it’s another area where if I open mail I then have to act on it, which is madness I know but it feels better to ignore and deny.

My eldest boy says it’s good start but I really need to deal with physical clutter. He’s right.

I’m back at cbt this week. Poor therapist 😭

IHateToCashew · 02/05/2018 18:01

Medway Grin I was the same until DH used to keep going on and on and on about it. I keep it at zero now.

Texts are another matter ...

Abstardust · 02/05/2018 18:05

My emails are just like that, keep trying to get them down but much like the house doesn't happenGrin

Don't feel like decluttered a lot but been finding home for things as I go. I did throw a pair of slippers today that the dog had decided was her new toy.

LilQueenie · 02/05/2018 18:56

okay I give up today. just want to go to bed. too emotionally drained. still to cook a stir fry wrap and bathe dd. Do you ever feel sometimes its just too much?
