After a thousand posts our homes are beautiful, decluttered places of harmony and relaxation….. or perhaps not?

We’re still trying to recycle, freecycle, sell our unwanted stuff and most of all clear out our houses, garages and sheds.

It’s easy to get involved, literally get rid of one thing a day and report back for support (and sometimes finger wagging if you’ve ‘accidentally’ bought a load of new clutter!)

Please join us and a warm welcome back to

Thank you Penelope. It just doesn't seem much when I look at what has still to be done. So far I've spent almost two hours in the kitchen instead of one and gotten rid of 2 bags for donation. I know I'm in serious cleaning mode when I light a yankee candle. Kitchen smells of garden flowers lol.

PenelopeFlintstone · 01/05/2018 13:24

The candle sounds divine Smile Flowers

LilQueenie · 01/05/2018 13:30

I find it helps. open window and new scent. clears away any stuffiness.

Namajesty · 01/05/2018 14:33

Lil you should be very proud, you got loads done and I bet your house feels much less chaotic now! Good luck with the kitchen. And I agree candles give something to a room like nothing else can. I prefer to light them at the end though once I've finished cleaning, it's like my reward Grin

I just smashed decluttered a glass.

DesertIslandPenguin · 01/05/2018 15:24

I have decluttered some paperbacks into the recycling. I'd forgotten that you could do that! And some socks with holes are going into recycling, too! Hooray!

Hoping to get DS to tidy up some of his toys, maybe even declutter some! The living room floor is slowly reappearing. I live in hope that I'll be able to whiz round with a mop without having to pick up every single toy on the planet!!

SandAndSea · 01/05/2018 15:33

I've decluttered some old beans I was never going to soak (I'd kept them for years just in case), an out of date jar of curry sauce and another pair of holey socks.

I'm building up to sorting out my bedroom again. Amongst other things, the carpet seems to have become a magnet for my clothes. With all the clutter clearing I've done though, it shouldn't take too long to sort out - one of the many benefits of it.

It's so lovely to read about how much this thread is helping people. Thanks everyone for sharing your stories.

IHateToCashew · 01/05/2018 15:55

Decluttered some rope Grin well ... repurposed. DS is having an nautical themed christening, so I made some balloon weights. Just need to sort the ends out!

Had to chuck my glue gun, it's around ten years old and totally bunged up beyond salvation.

Keep on getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge!
StealthNinjaMum · 01/05/2018 16:07

I came on to say I haven't done anything today. I did some housework and just didn't find anything to get rid of as I was going. Then I remembered that dd2 refused to put on some knickers this morning saying they were too small. So I threw them away.

Namajesty · 01/05/2018 16:22

Stealth olt's better than nolt Wink

I've been mainly focused on cleaning today but I managed to do a bit more weeding and some DIY. So I guess that counts as 'home maintenance decluttering' as it's now ticked off my to do list?? Hopeful emoji here

I'm sure I will find something to throw out later on but for now I'm taking a 5 minute break while the floor dries. And definitely keeping an in and out list this month.

IHateToCashew · 01/05/2018 16:48

Oh, I did have a small accident in Waitrose.

I bought two pots of poncy coconut infused coffee. It stinks and tastes like arse.

AdaColeman · 01/05/2018 17:33

"coconut infused coffee" whoever dreamt that up! It must taste like shampoo!

I was having a look through the store cupboard for some inspiration (I'm sure I left a bag of it in there) and noticed a half finished jar of preserved lemons, why do they sell them in such huge packs when you only use a little of it? I quickly get bored with the strong flavour and never manage to use up a whole jar.

So that's gone now, also another cardboard box full of shredded paper.

IHateToCashew · 01/05/2018 17:52

Ada I think it smells of vomit tbh. I got sloshed on Malibu as a teenager Grin

AdaColeman · 01/05/2018 18:08

Oh I still love a Pina Colada Cashew!

IHateToCashew · 01/05/2018 18:11

DH has bought home bags of baby clothes from work 😩 the owner wants photos of DS in them tomorrow.

It's so generous. But I pointed out they won't fit for another year, are really high faff to put on (think shirts and suspenders) and we have NO WHERE to store them short of buying a storage box and it living in the middle of the hall. I'm thinking vacuum bags for his clothes and then labelling the bags, they might just squeeze into his drawer if I can flatten them enough.

Namajesty · 01/05/2018 20:45

Managed to find a lonely toddler sippy cup lid and a plastic spatula for applying face masks.

Total out is 2. Anyone want to come up with a random number of things that I have to get rid of this month for me?

Gibble1 · 01/05/2018 21:30

Namajesty I challenge you to get rid of 132 items this month. I am decluttering a cup of coffee and then going for an earlier than normal night hopefully!

MinnieMinchkin · 01/05/2018 22:32

I've just found this thread and think it may be the inspiration I need. I don't have a complete inventory, but this year is a story of two steps forward and one step back.

I have got about 7 or 8 large boxes of baby clothes and toys from the attic and recycled the contents to charity or the bin (except for 5 bin bags patiently waiting at the top of the stairs). Blush I have eBayed 7 pairs of footwear, 3 jackets and several dresses and skirts of my own (although I have bought two jackets and a pair of flip flops). BlushGrin

I've shredded lots of unnecessary documentation but the office is still a midden.

Namajesty · 01/05/2018 23:22

Minnie welcome welcome, and what a great start!

LostMyBaubles · 02/05/2018 07:35

It stinks and tastes like arse 😂

Sorry lol

Will have a proper catch up

CiderwithBuda · 02/05/2018 10:26

Glad everyone is still pottering along. And welcome and well done to new people. It’s a very encouraging thread!

Still got a bit of UTI. Not helped by drinking too much wine last night. Still drinking water and taking tablets although they’ve nearly run out - which would be decluttering but I’ve got more arriving later!

Yesterday I decluttered my grey roots at the hairdressers. And then two nice ladies decluttered a load of weeds from the garden. Although we now need to get rid of bags of weeds. Green bin is full.

Sofa arrived from John Lewis yesterday so will hopefully get the veranda sorted today.

Plumber is coming later to hopefully declutter the weird noise our kitchen tap makes if the upstairs shower is on!

And DH and I are going to try sort the office/sitting room which had a wall damp treated and replastered. Lots of dust so a big clean and then moving furniture around. Hopefully can get the computer back in there as it’s currently taking up space on th kitchen table.

Hoping to be able to empty some boxes in the office and get some sorting done and getting rid of stuff.

StealthNinjaMum · 02/05/2018 10:55

Gibble 132! Grin

We have an electrician here today so the boxes of lights that have been sitting at the bottom of my wardrobe for about 3 years have gone. Not sure it counts as decluttering as I'm replacing old lights with new lights but I will certainly have a lot more space in my wardrobe.

I'm going to be doing lots of housework and making cups of tea but am also going to try to spend a couple of hours in the Room of Doom doing more paperwork. I have also moved some toys there so it is full of clutter again.

cider love your definition of the word declutter to include removing noises, grey hair and tablets.

cashew I love that description 'it stinks and tastes like arse'. Wonder if you advertised it on eBay like that if the perv knicker buyer would like it!

Today's list so far:

1 used up moisturiser tube
1 empty bottle of essential oil
2 almost empty jars of pesto
Half a bag of off bean sprouts
About 6 odd, black shoe laces (which I reckon I've been keeping safe "just in case" for a good 20 years)
Leaves and roots from 1, trimmed, cheese plant

1 "strange handle thing" is back in the house after I remembered it's for the bar-b-q. (Not sure we need it though since we haven't used it for years.)

IHateToCashew · 02/05/2018 11:56

I'm willing to send out samples (of the arse coffee) to prove this!

I'm wondering if it would make an interesting coffee cake or something. I feel like I need to use it up.

AdaColeman · 02/05/2018 12:03

Maybe it would work as iced coffee, with scoops of ice cream and a shot of baileys or similar?

CiderwithBuda · 02/05/2018 12:19

Ooh that sounds nice Ada!
