Keep on getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge!

After a thousand posts our homes are beautiful, decluttered places of harmony and relaxation….. or perhaps not?

We’re still trying to recycle, freecycle, sell our unwanted stuff and most of all clear out our houses, garages and sheds.

It’s easy to get involved, literally get rid of one thing a day and report back for support (and sometimes finger wagging if you’ve ‘accidentally’ bought a load of new clutter!)

Please join us and a warm welcome back to

I have a giant primark bag that I filled to the brim and chucked today from my former marital home. I am thinking of boxing all items I actively want to keep and then getting a hippo bag and chuck everything else in!

AdaColeman · 20/04/2018 13:57

Out went some earthen ware jars today, I'm never again going to make a gallon of lemon curd.

IHateToCashew · 20/04/2018 14:09

Not even if I begged him Ada? The medicine drawer was overflowing again Hmm so I've done it again. Somehow we have gained five tubes of expired savlon from 2014.

Does anyone have a genius way of storing all the odds and ends that don't have boxes? We seem to have dozens of packets of random bits and pieces that clutter it up and stop the drawer shutting.

IHateToCashew · 20/04/2018 14:10

Him! I meant YOU Grin

AdaColeman · 20/04/2018 14:30

Grin No, too late now Cashew sorry!

But I'm looking out for a nice large jar to make prunes in spiced brandy, so I've not got rid of all my jars yet!

StealthNinjaMum · 21/04/2018 08:54

Ihatetocashew lovely, use the planters. It's such a positive thing to do. I find that I put so much effort into making my house less horrible (i.e. decluttering) that I never make it nicer. So I have finally found an electrician to put in the new lights I mentioned ages ago.

Well done unravellingfast. I am jealous of your speed and wish I could just fill big bags like that (sorry if that sounds insensitive given your marital situation).

While emptying dds wardrobes last week I have a pile of child's coathangers. I am wondering if charity shops take them.

So I was awake all night thinking about decorating the toilet Grin I figure it's a small, easy space to do, and a great start.

I figure I could even get some shelves over the loo itself for more storage. Paint the back wall. Get a nice loo seat. Maybe a new blind and some fancy cleaning bits.

I'm inspired by you lot and I'm going up fund it out money I make decluttering Smile

ememem84 · 21/04/2018 10:13

I’ve just decluttered the car.

Any number of old parking tickets (ones for parking not fines!), leaves, about a beach bucket of sand and leaves and £4.78 in change.

Am now at the car wash. I still need to hoover the inside as didn’t do that but that’s for tomorrow/later. Outside of the car will be clean(er)!

IHateToCashew · 21/04/2018 10:19

And that's fab Stealth Smile I'm sure they'll look lovely.

IHateToCashew · 21/04/2018 15:18

While decluttering I found some shelves Grin now if only I can find some paint and a loo seat my toilet fantasy is reality.

Bit of clutter gained today. DS fell in love with a toy monkey. Heading home to get rid of one toy he isn't as besotted with.

Also bought the hamster some stuff to keep it entertained after it escaped again this morning. The hamster is my most hated piece of clutter. It's staying with us while DH's colleague is deployed Hmm I don't think she intends to take him back ...

LostMyBaubles · 21/04/2018 15:26

Can I join please

Dc no4 is due in aug/sept
Have lots of junk in the house lol

IHateToCashew · 21/04/2018 15:40

Ohhh how exciting Lost :) how long have you got to declutter before they arrive?

LostMyBaubles · 21/04/2018 15:57

Im 20+ weeks atm with a few health problems so taking each day slowly.

Ive started with sorting clothes and wardrobes out so I can wash baby clothes and get them put away. That will be half nu battle done!
Ive got around 7yrs of boys clothes stored at home which will come into use for ds once hes here

ememem84 · 21/04/2018 16:01

Hi lost!

I am doing another wardrobe sweep as I am charity shop dropping on Wednesday.

Unnecessary clutter be gone!

Also as I have a ton Of vouchers for clothes shops I can shop guilt free! Woohoo!!

MaryPeary · 21/04/2018 16:17

I think I over - exerted myself with my tidy medicine cupboard last week, as I haven't done anything else until now! 2 bags of kids' judo and karate clothes out - we haven't been club members for at least 7 years! 1 big shopping bag of outgrown kids' clothes out, but alas, same amount of larger kids' clothes back in on the way home!

ememem84 · 21/04/2018 16:37

Three nail polishes out. All binned. All thick gunky and not my colour.

ememem84 · 21/04/2018 16:38

And another charity shop bag done.

I’ve shredded cardboard for recycling too. Yippee.

CiderwithBuda · 21/04/2018 17:00

I’ve not achieved much this week unfortunately. And I added to the mess but buying some summer clothes o line. Now have some packages to post back of course as some were not right.

I might attempt the kitchen junk drawer this evening while DH is cooking.

Tomorrow I’m planning on cleaning the veranda ready for summer and ordering a sofa for it. Bought a sign for it - “Gin Den” as I call it the Gin and Tonic Terrace. It’s one of the reasons I fell in love with the house and we’ve only had one year where we had it nice enough to use.

Next week I am DEFINITELY sorting my clothes and my bathroom.

StealthNinjaMum · 21/04/2018 18:12

Hello lost

Today I spent some ancient Marks vouchers that were worth £15. They were probably 15 years old and still worked. So that's two pieces of paper out of the house. I spent them on socks. I have a problem of millions of unmatching white socks in the house and dd have almost the same size feet so I am going to round up the old ones, throw them out and start a new system with new ones. One child has slightly patterned socks and one has a stripy pattern to identify whose is whose. I might also buy iron in labels for them.

I just wanted to wash the baby clothes and put them away but need space to put them away!

My younger 2 are a year apart so rather than having seperate shelves for pjs for them both I've taken small ones out and put on same shelf.

We have good storage in the house in ds1 room like a walk in thing but cant walk in as door is blocked by slide lol and its a bit narrow so its got suitcases in it and some fancy dresses

Need to sort out all the bags so open them, put tjem into age piles and wash say the first 6months, iron put away and then put the rest of the bags in storage labelled up

Doing this alone, while looking after 3 ds. 1 with lots of health problems and being pregnant with health problems Hmm
Hubby just gets in the way lol

IHateToCashew · 21/04/2018 19:43

You'll get there Lost, even just one thing a day makes a huge difference in the long run, and it's so easily achievable! I'm sure you'll get on top of it all before number four arrives Smile

DH has picked up an extra bank shift tomorrow, I think I might take a look at those pots and grab some compost and put them to use. The must be some idiot proof seeds out there - presuming it's not too late to grow anything!

IHateToCashew · 21/04/2018 19:45

Is there any chance you could persuade the kids to go build a makeshift tent or something in the garden Lost? Anything you a few minutes to clear a gap and stick a wash on.

I really admire you for tackling it! I find it hard enough just keeping up with DS and DH's stuff.

LostMyBaubles · 21/04/2018 20:36

The boys are fantastic and get on with it, playing with their toys, books and ofc tablets and games

Suffered with HG until around 14weeks so have been playing catch up since!
Been helping parents out as dad has been ill too so it does all pile up.
Obv the basics were done (everyday cleaning)

I don't want to buy a new wardrobe for baby. I dont want more clutter!

So if i can make space then im getting rid of crap we dont need before we get more crap from visitors lol

IHateToCashew · 21/04/2018 21:03

Oh bless you Sad with HG you just do what you can, don't you? I completely get why you don't want to buy an entire new wardrobe, especially when you hopefully have everything you need already.

I just lost my shit with the thorny bush outside. It cut my foot.

So I cut it all up into teeny tiny pieces while it continued to poke me Grin I got carried away and cut the bush back too. So now the bins fit neatly away, it's all been swept and DS and I can get out the front for without being sad.

Abstardust · 21/04/2018 21:36

I managed to clear 3 bags of rubbish from the garden today, mostly broken toys, loose packets and socks. I now know why I struggle to find pairs in the house. Struggling to get motivated in the house, just need to pick a place to start.
