Keep on getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge!

After a thousand posts our homes are beautiful, decluttered places of harmony and relaxation….. or perhaps not?

We’re still trying to recycle, freecycle, sell our unwanted stuff and most of all clear out our houses, garages and sheds.

It’s easy to get involved, literally get rid of one thing a day and report back for support (and sometimes finger wagging if you’ve ‘accidentally’ bought a load of new clutter!)

Please join us and a warm welcome back to

One whole wheelie bin of rubbish out of our trashed rental. Not exactly my place, but still clutter that I have to deal with.

Olivo · 15/04/2018 06:56

I have been following your thread whilst away, and now I am back, the decluttering shall begin! I think I'll start with wardrobes, as I'm washing and putting away the holiday clothes. Scary task ahead!

StealthNinjaMum · 15/04/2018 10:45

tutu it took me about 6 months of decluttering before I started to get rid of gifts as it just felt wrong. But some of them had been lying around the house for about ten years (awful bronze pot from mil I'm thinking of you!) and my attitude now is do I want something to sit around the house for a decade, not be used and get in the way or do I want someone else to have it straight away?

sandandsea good news about your buyer turning up.

SandAndSea · 15/04/2018 10:48

@StealthNinjaMum - Definitely! I was really surprised and she was really nice too! I've advertised another item now. No news yet though.

ememem84 · 15/04/2018 14:26

Three bags of rubbish out today. Including 2 tshirts.

Am also taking 3 bottles, a pack of nappies, some dummies some spoons and bowls a sippy cup a sleeping bag and some wipes and formula to dparents today. They’re looking after ds for us two days a week once I go back to work.

CiderwithBuda · 15/04/2018 16:03

I’ve emptied another basket from an Ikea Kallax unit. About ten health and fitness magazines gone into recycling. Have a couple of books to look at but I think they will go into charity pile.

namastayinbed · 15/04/2018 16:15

2 more things out - an old magazine recycled and an old cupboard freecycled.

18 out

ememem84 · 15/04/2018 20:35

Dumped a pot of evening primrose oil capsules. I tried them a while ago and didn’t get on with them. So they’ve cleared a space.

Clutterfreeintraining · 15/04/2018 22:15

3 more items sold on eBay - Yay!!
I really want a new kitchen bench so have decided I can have it once I’ve made enough on eBay to pay for it. I’m currently 1/3 of the way there but not sure I’ve much else of value to list Grin

Gibble1 · 15/04/2018 23:07

I am exhausted!
Having defrosted the freezer yesterday, I stuck it on Facebook. A woman down the road wanted it so DH and I took it down and then I dragged him out to get Lino for the cupboard under the stairs.
I have emptied the cupboard, we laid Lino and then we put everything back. I have got rid of a large wheelie bin full of rubbish, 2 large recycling boxes full of recycling and done all the washing. I have hoovered through lounge and dining room and then gazed dr carpet. Dismantled vax to clear sucky bit of dog hair and other barf inducing stuff. 2 unopened rolls of lining paper gone into car to go to cubs.
I have also created 7 individual first aid kits for leaders and young leaders and a group first aid kit for camps and then put them in an Ikea bag in my boot- the kits don’t count as I got the half filled bags into the house and filled them with stuff I bought today but they went in and out in one day only which i am very pleased about!
My lounge is full of bags which need sorting and going but they can be done later.
Found lots of ends of rolls of wallpaper which are going to be used to line my kitchen drawers and cupboards and then my new chest of drawers when it arrives.
I’ve ordered it and my uncle will collect it for me so I’ll get it in about 2 weeks.
Hoping builder is coming to finish rendering tomorrow- he’s been delayed by terrible weather since December.
I also managed to put the boot cover back into the car earlier and have put the new seat covers in there. Only managed to get one on as DS arrived home from a camp while I was doing it.
My house is finally coming together!
My new kitchen has given me so much wonderful storage space that I can use and DH and I have been very slowly chipping away at the clutter since the old one was removed in early November.
DH also put up a blind in DD’s bedroom yesterday so I count that as an out. Just need to get him to put up the kitchen blind- hopefully this week.
Am decluttering a bottle of Thatchers Katy now.
And one final show off moment.....
I had a bath and decluttered the last of a bar of soap and enough hair to cover my Labrador 😂

PenelopeFlintstone · 16/04/2018 00:39

Fantastic effort, Gibble!

SandAndSea · 16/04/2018 00:53

Well done, Gibble!

My one thing today is a hairbrush but what do I do with it? Will a charity shop take it if it's clean?

Namajesty · 16/04/2018 01:31

Fucking hell gibble I need some of whatever it is you've taken ShockGrin you have won the whole thread Star

CiderwithBuda · 16/04/2018 07:52

Wow Gibble. That is far more than one thing a day! Well done. Love the idea of using wallpaper to line drawers etc. Will rescue some from the rubbish pile! Which isn’t a win for me really! But better than chucking it.

StealthNinjaMum · 16/04/2018 12:18

Gibble I agree with namajesty you've won the thread!

I think you did my decluttering because yesterday I didn't manage to get rid of anything! Today isn't looking good either. The house is a mess so I am about to whizz round with a hoover.

I have got rid of two bags of toys and bric a brac to the charity shop but they don't count as they have been in the car for about a month and I probably counted them as a thing got rid of a month ago!

PurpleFrog · 16/04/2018 13:06

Gibble - I'm feeling tired just reading your post! Well done!

Life got in the way this weekend, and I'm afraid other things were a higher priority than decluttering. I did get rid of a set of bike stabilisers unexpectedly, though. Someone posted on the local Facebook selling group looking for a pair, so that saves me photographing them and listing them. (Assuming they fit, that is, as I said I would take them back and refund her if they weren't right.)

During the week I did manage to sort out some more stuff from the large ironing/mending pile, so some of the very crushed clothes from the bottom have been rewashed, ironed and put away.

I intend to get rid of extra stuff this week to catch up. Grin

Clutterfreeintraining · 16/04/2018 14:43

Wow, gibble!! Not surprised you’re exhausted!! What a productive weekend - you must be delighted Grin

I’ve posted my three eBay parcels and as my first childminded child was 30 mins late, I used the time to clear the top of the tv cupboard and the top of the piano - both are general dumping ground for bits, pieces and general crap that doesn’t have a home. All rehomed now and I even dusted both surfaces Shock
I can’t believe what an effect this thread has had on meGrin

tutu112 · 16/04/2018 14:45

Wow, kudos, Gibble! Love the final act of decluttering the thatchers too. Well, I've had an epic fail after having the mother of all headaches these last two days. No decluttering done at all, except I've used up a cleanser and some conditioner. I guess that still counts. Will crack on with more decluttering later.

Abstardust · 16/04/2018 20:19

Can I join too? I have so much stuff in my house and it never seems tidy for long. Have read all the thread and you guys have inspired me to start fully tomorrow and hopefully keep me motivated.

One thing I'm unsure how to declutter is dc school books, I have twins in y2 and have about 20 workbooks at least just piled up at the moment. I can't think how to store nicely and feel horrible throwing them but I know I can't keep them all for each year especially when youngest starts school too.

CiderwithBuda · 16/04/2018 22:09

I was going to say nothing went here today but I did get rid of a tub of ice cream which has been taking up space in th freezer. And no I didn’t eat it! It was past its use by date and DS has gone off it so it got defrosted and junked.

Thinking of attempting clothes tomorrow. Need to sort out summer stuff anyway if the weather forecast is to be believed.

CiderwithBuda · 16/04/2018 22:11

Oh sorry about the headache tutu. Sounds rubbish.

And hi Abstardust. I’ve just gotten rid of loads of my sons school stuff. Going back to nursery. He is in 6th form now! I’ve kept a couple of things but most went.

Gibble1 · 16/04/2018 22:25

I noticed that DD has decluttered an old notebook and some other items into the paper recycling yesterday so she’s getting into it too!
Headaches suck. Sorry you’ve been suffering. I had a migraine from Wednesday to Saturday and it was awful. Then today in Work I was having an allergic reaction to someone’s perfume so I spent the entire day sneezing. Took 2 lots of antihistamines and it finally started to improve.
No decluttering done today as am shattered. Off to bed now but might get some done tomorrow as have a study day at work.

PenelopeFlintstone · 17/04/2018 03:43

Stealth - if Gibble wins the thread (Nice work, Gibble) And very nice of Namajesty but this thread is just as much about small wins, I believe (No offence intended, Namagesty) then you must surely be awarded a prize for initiating it, consistency of posting, and encouraging other posters. Star Flowers

TheGrumpySquirrel · 17/04/2018 06:07

@Abstardust I had similar with dd nursery folders and school books - ultimately if you have so many you'll never look at them again! I tore out all the nicest pages with significant drawings or cute bits of writing and either took photos of them or kept them to put into 1 scrapbook. The rest of the workbooks I recycled. So liberating

Abstardust · 17/04/2018 06:34

thegrumpysquirrel that's a great idea, they put pictures in the books so a scrapbook would be great
