Keep on getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge!

After a thousand posts our homes are beautiful, decluttered places of harmony and relaxation….. or perhaps not?

We’re still trying to recycle, freecycle, sell our unwanted stuff and most of all clear out our houses, garages and sheds.

It’s easy to get involved, literally get rid of one thing a day and report back for support (and sometimes finger wagging if you’ve ‘accidentally’ bought a load of new clutter!)

Please join us and a warm welcome back to

Middle my DH sounds similar in that he has a new hobby every 6 months (fishing, photography, beer making... you name it) which requires a lot of "gear"... and likes picking things up in junk shops - I had a brass lamp in the kitchen for a year (half polished with the polish and cloth sitting next to it) and he also collects old axes and gardening tools (most in the shed thankfully). He also bought a FUGLY 1980s kenwood mixer from oxfam for £20.., it's in a kitchen cupboard now so I don't have to look at it!

TheGrumpySquirrel · 07/04/2018 10:14

@NQismyhome I think I get what you mean.. but can you still access those cupboards in the recesses?

TheGrumpySquirrel · 07/04/2018 10:15

We have recesses either side of chimney breast too and one of them will be incorporated into the new fitted wardrobe. The other will gave a dressing table in it as it's next to a window

NQismyhome · 07/04/2018 10:19

The doors to the already fitted cupboards have been removed and shelves put into one of the recesses (the boiler is on the other side) and deep shelves along the chimney breast, accessed from either side, for big things like suitcases/camping gear...I’ll find a pic

NQismyhome · 07/04/2018 10:22

I can’t find a pic from before but this is how it looks now (well, it’s how it should look if I’d made my bed Grin)

The only other furniture in the room is a big chest of drawers which my mother decluttered to me and won’t let me pass on!!

I've felt quite inspired by this thread. Am currently on hols but am determined now to do the one a day clear out on my return. My downfall is toiletries ( but am going to start by not bringing anything home from this one!) and shoes, not fancy ones, but I am always reluctant to let them go, just in case. I have started the wardrobe thing where everything is hung back to front until you use it, and will check I. The summer holidays what hasn't been used. I have new job starting in 5months so it will be good to clear out and move on!

Thanks for your inspiration!

@TheGrumpySquirrel
Here they are - basically copied a Neatsmith design
(Lazy morning in bedBlush)
Going to put small sofa below window to add some colour but I'm fed up of choosing stuff for the moment so it'll wait

@NQismyhome ah I see so a bit like a walk in storage area. It looks good!

TheGrumpySquirrel · 07/04/2018 10:52

@abitoflight they look very smart!

Squirrel - yes, except there are now shelves behind the centre part too. I’d originally wanted only one opening and to be able to walk from one end to the other but this way has created much better storage.
I looked at sliding doors to cover the whole length of the wall but it would have stopped me being able to put any furniture against the wall at all and due to the uneven height of the ceiling, would have had to get bespoke doors which my budget didn’t allow for Grin and also, would have meant my bed would have to be against an exterior wall (damp, old house with lots of condensation)

Keepon - I previously whittled down my shoe collection but had a couple of pairs that I’d worn once and couldn’t quite part with. One pair of short boots didn’t look right with any clothes I had so had been left in a cupboard for several years. I discovered last week, whilst looking for something for a weekend away in a couple of weeks, that since I’ve had a total style-change over the last couple of years (I’m still very UNstylish!), they now go perfectly! So I wore them last weekend, their second ever outing and they have perished and are fit for the bin! Sad
The other pair of shoes were uncomfortably high and got put in the eBay box. Finally listed them last weekend and they sold within 24hours and are now with their new owner who is delighted with them Smile
I’m sure I have many other pairs that should probably go and after the perishing-boots-incident of last weekend, I think it’ll be easier to pass them on so that someone else can make use of them. They’re no good to anyone hiding in my cupboard!!

I struggle with trainers - so many nice ones and such a degree of casual/smartish options that there is always a reason to get more

ememem84 · 07/04/2018 14:46

@NQismyhome I love that wallpaper! Where’s it from?!

I dropped off the thread. We still haven’t moved house. But I’m still clearing stuff out.

I had stashed loads of boxes for the move but have ditched these. I’ve also earmarked luggage for ditching (but after the move). In the mean time all luggage had been stored up inside each other.

NQismyhome · 07/04/2018 15:08

@ememem84 - Thank you :) It's from graham & brown - I’ll see if I can find it...

Stealth Thanks so much for your kind and thoughtful message.

CiderwithBuda · 07/04/2018 16:30

I’m dreading doing shoes. And boots. And trainers. And flip flops. Currently have a stash upstairs in wardrobe and loads chucked in a messy pile in hall cupboard. And prob more hidden around. I might tackle that this week.

We tried to do the charity shop drop off today. Put it in the car to drop off in way to garden centre but the shop was shut! Will drop off on Monday.

Need to find something to go today!

ememem84 · 07/04/2018 16:48

I’ve done shoes recently. It wasn’t easy. But I did it. I’ve kept one pair of flip flops. They were new last year, I ditched a lot of tan boots. I had almost 20 pairs in varying styles lengths etc.

I’ve ditched manky ballet pumps (which were scruffy and scratched) I may buy a couple more pairs for work but will do that once I go back.

LonelyOversharer · 07/04/2018 23:04

Today I sorted out around/in dd2's stupid high sleeper bed. Filled a binbag. Included the very broken fur real panda. Dd1 gutted under her bed (all by herself) two bin bags there. In the boot of the car, ready for the tip.

Did the vat return for our (slowly shutting down/folding) business tonight, tackled the last huge bag of paperwork. All envelopes opened. This is my dread bug bear. Pile for the shredder, few invoices/bills kept (filed) and the bumpf is in the recycling bin.

So a win for today. Some days it will be just one thing out though. The vat forced my hand. I have been avoiding that pile of papers for about 4 months.

Clutterfreeintraining · 08/04/2018 10:17

Good morning everyone!! (Namecganged from NQ)
I’m on a roll this morning. The half-filled-with-rubbish celebrations tub has been next to the sink for weeks. Goodness knows why I couldn’t empty it and put it in the recycling before now but I have finally done it!
Shoes are now top of my list - going to try and be ruthless and keep thinking of my poor purple boots while I’m doing it Grin

TheGrumpySquirrel · 08/04/2018 10:27

Morning chaps. Well done on the progress everyone! Well I've run out of things to do to avoid sorting through the last 4 boxes of random clutter in my living room.. problem is it's mostly dh's stuff.

I did manage to resist the temptation to buy 2 pairs of trainers off the OUTNET - based on the fact that I wear trainers about 3 weeks a year because 1) I work full time and 2) I'm always too cold in the uk .. I do need comfy work shoes options so I might look at some flattish brogues or cowboy style ankle boots. Thin heels are pointless as they get ruined in 5 seconds (although I have 2 pairs in a drawer at work). I can't believe how many pairs of shoes some of you have!
