After a thousand posts our homes are beautiful, decluttered places of harmony and relaxation….. or perhaps not?

We’re still trying to recycle, freecycle, sell our unwanted stuff and most of all clear out our houses, garages and sheds.

It’s easy to get involved, literally get rid of one thing a day and report back for support (and sometimes finger wagging if you’ve ‘accidentally’ bought a load of new clutter!)

Please join us and a warm welcome back to

Have tackled the big box on wheels that has been sharing the conservatory doorway for three years Blush ... onto the kitchen floor. Mostly tools, socks dropped in transit, bags of bags for life (will use for rubbush) and now binned crap. The box is soaking (very dusty) as I need to use it later. I will put away the kitchen floor bits next time I venture downstairs.

Job for today is to empty under the high sleeper (into said box) and dismantle it. This will leave us a bed short temporarily.

Clutterfreeintraining · 08/04/2018 11:35

Well, I didn’t think I had that many shoes...just listed 5 pairs of unworn on eBay and two pairs of BN flip flops into the charity bag Blush
It seems I have a weakness for flip flops/sandals but as they take up very little space, I’m keeping the ones I love and will reassess when it’s actually warm enough to wear them Grin
Next I’m going to tackle the charity shop box that’s been on the kitchen floor for at least 6 weeks - last time all my family came over, they practically emptied it so the incentive to take it to the shop went. I’ve got enough to fill it again now.

MajestyRoyal · 08/04/2018 11:36

Lonely that is absolutely brilliant, I bet you feel so much lighter after getting rid of all that! And you're away decluttering again today! Good luck you're doing amazing Smile

Unfortunately just cleaning for me today but I'm sure I can find something to throw away

StealthNinjaMum · 08/04/2018 12:14

Wow so many posts, we're all doing so well.

abitofflight nqismyhome what beautiful bedrooms and storage I am so jealous. I would never post a picture of my house because it is so dated. Whenever there is a thread about things that are naff my house inevitably has everything mentioned!

Have done no decluttering, but put mouse traps down and hoovered / cleaned kitchen to remove crumbs. I'm usually pretty hot on hoovering food areas as we've had mice before but now I am obsessed. I have finished sorting through winter accessories and summer accessories and found homes for them. Still have makeup on my floor so will find a home for that today and tackle dd2s bedroom which has stuff on the floor. Feeling yucky at the thought of those nasty, dirty invaders running over our stuff even though I haven't found any poos upstairs.

Lonely I love finishing those sort of tasks. Your house will actually be bigger after sorting the big box on wheels. It's so satisfying.

Lonely - such a sense of achievement when you do something you’ve been putting off for ages. Good luck with the highsleeper!!
Majesty - cleaning is good - always makes me feel much happier - I should do it more often Grin
Stealth - thank you. It’s one of very few parts of the house I love (and I purposely didn’t take a photo of the other side of the room where all the Christmas decs are still waiting to be rehomed Blush
I’ve sorted out the box from my kitchen floor, filled it and put it next to the front door to be taken over to the car next time I leave the house. Feeling productive

Clutterfreeintraining · 08/04/2018 12:41

Oh and I meant to say, you have my sympathies re the mice Sad
I felt the same when I had them.

LonelyOversharer · 08/04/2018 21:36

Childrens beds sorted. Another bin bag of rubbish, plus 2 very dead pillows, a duvet and dd1 has parted with her knackered bean bag. All in the tip pile, going tomorrow. Am getting through the shredding, but my shredder has regular tantrums.

AdaColeman · 08/04/2018 22:07

I've tidied a shelf in the store cupboard and thrown out a few things that had gone well last their use by date.

Hope you soon get rid of you mice problem Stealth.

A shredder! That's what I need, I'm sure I've got on somewhere....

StealthNinjaMum · 08/04/2018 22:16

Ooh Ada top tip in the last thread is that some paperwork's ink runs in water so people just wet it (some people add bleach) and don't use a shredder. I have broken many shredders and had an unsuccessful 'incineration' attempt in the back garden in order to get rid of my paperwork. Thankfully it's under control now and I have a shredder that gives me joy when I look at it.

OP posts:
AdaColeman · 08/04/2018 22:24

Oh yes! I can kill a shredder stone dead just with the rustle of paper near it! Easter Grin So I'll give the wetting a go!

Middleoftheroad · 08/04/2018 22:33

@TheGrumpySquirrel - sympathies re 1980s mixer. DH pulled a Polaroid camera out skip last time.

One thing that's really stuck with these threads is the one thing in one thing out rule. Bought a few bits this weekend so their equivalent older counterparts have been recycled or binned.

lljkk · 08/04/2018 22:34

I tossed (worn out) a pr of boots & some slipper boots.

Darnit, we have 2x 1000 piece jigsaw puzzles that have 2 pieces missing. So I don't think can go to charity shop. Should I try to freecycle? Grrr.

StealthNinjaMum · 09/04/2018 10:17

Ha ha. Laughing at the jigsaws comment. i held on to some for about a year waiting for the pieces to turn up (I'm fairly certain they're hiding under a cushion somewhere), I sold lots of dcs jigsaws and asked the buyers if they wanted the ones with missing pieces free and got rid of them that way. I think free cycle would be a good way of getting rid of them. There will be a thread at Christmas on naff presents and someone will complain their mum gave them a jigsaw puzzle with a missing pice!

We are one mouse down! Floors and surfaces have never been so clean and crumb free - why do we never get unexpected visitors on days like today?

OP posts:
PurpleFrog · 09/04/2018 10:32

lljkk - just put the jigsaws with pieces missing in the cardboard/paper recycling!

I have similar problems with board games that came from my Mum's house. Since she has dementia, pieces have been muddled up and I keep finding bits in with other things. At some point I am going to have to admit defeat and either chuck them or try to replace the missing bits from eBay.

FizzingWhizzbee · 09/04/2018 11:13

Hi, everyone - I badly need to join you, if I may? We're doing lots of renovation work on our home this year and I am determined that we're not just going to spoil its new-found beauty by just shoving all the crap back into each room as it is done!

I'm on holiday next week, so realistically won't be starting until we're back, so I'm pretty much bookmarking for then - but if I can ditch anything in the meantime, I'll report back!

Smile
CiderwithBuda · 09/04/2018 14:26

Also laughing at the jigsaws. I did a 1000 piece one over Christmas. Discovered it was missing a piece. (It’s always the last piece too!Grin). I had my suspicions and lo and behold a few weeks later DS (16) gave me the piece he had stolen. Little sod!

I’m doing another one and have had to warn him not to take any pieces as this one is borrowed.

I got rid of a bra yesterday. Noting else. And nothing today. Not feeling great so a lazy day here.

Actually something nice happened - I recently freecycled some cross stitch and quilting stuff. The lady who picked up th cross stitch sent me an email to thank me. The quilting stuff went to a lady who has motor neurone disease - she arranged for it to be collected. She sent me a lovely email and also sent some photos of previous quilts she had made. Absolutely beautiful. The fabrics I had I had had since the late 90s. They’ve moved countries four times. I sorted through them multiple times. But will never use them. So pleased that someone will have them and get great pleasure out of using them.

PurpleFrog · 09/04/2018 14:59

I have had quite a productive weekend.

We had our bathroom redone 2.5 years ago, and since then there has been a plastic storage box sitting on the landing with all the stuff that didn't go back into the new bathroom. But it is there no more! It has now been emptied and washed out, ready to be refilled and go into the loft for storage. All of the out of date medicines have gone in a bag ready to take to the Pharmacy, and I have been ruthless with novelty soaps and small bottles of bath stuff I know I will never use.

I also chucked out the contents of fish food containers and washed them for recycling. I had been going to pass them on to someone but they have been lying around so long the most recent Best Before dates were in 2015! Blush

MajestyRoyal · 09/04/2018 15:02

Hello fizzing Wink

I managed to throw out a load of old socks today. Ones that develop holes are thrown out immediately but I just chucked out 5 pairs which looked a bit old and could do with replacing.

I also had to throw out a brand new concealer stick as DS decided to bite a chunk out of it Angry fecking kids.

ememem84 · 09/04/2018 15:18

Took dh’s Old laptop, phones and our old kettle to the dump today. Hoorah

GiveMePrivacy · 09/04/2018 15:33

Hello - can I join? I was reading this thread last night and feeling inspired. Today I cleared out the medicines and vitamins cupboard and binned some aspirin with a use - by date in 2001 Grin

Now I've organised it in boxes according to the ailment, so that my teenagers can just grab the relevant box and hopefully treat themselves.

Feeling very proud of my organised cupboard.

Keep on getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge!

FizzingWhizzbee · 09/04/2018 15:47

Actually, I suppose I have done something today - 15 things I had on ebay all ended today, and 9 of them sold. But I suppose it doesn't really count until they are packed up and posted, which won't be until Wednesday.

Of the things that didn't sell, I'll relist one (as I know it will sell given more time), the others are off to charity. I can start a charity box this evening. DH has a week off between jobs after our holiday, so he can take it then. He's going to be a busy bee decluttering on my behalf!

Tiddlywinks63 · 09/04/2018 16:11

Hello everyone, I'm delinking again
DH is decorating the bedrooms so I thought I should start trying to clear out my clothes, and despite filling five big bags, I have barely scratched the surface. I seem to have a siege mentality I think!
Just how many jeans, shirts, jumpers, tee shirts etc does anyone actually need?
If I confess to 22 pairs of jeans you'll get some idea of what I mean 😢
A chest of drawers fell apart and that triggered this post, I cannot cram the contents into the remaining drawers and wardrobe (and that's just my winter clothes Blush
I'm retired so don't need 'smart' clothes. I tend to live in the same tatty jumpers and jeans rather than actually make an effort to try different combinations so perhaps that's where I need to start?
Any suggestions very gratefully accepted (and as for toiletries and makeup, I have enough to last years 😱)

AdaColeman · 09/04/2018 17:37

While looking for something else, I came across an unopened box of Twister that I won years ago. Would children still play with it, shall I send it to the charity shop or just bin it?

mybrainhurtsalot · 09/04/2018 19:28

i’m sure a charity shop would be delighted to have the Twister game, Ada.
