If you are strugging with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, support and Wine and Cake along the way.

This is where, from the first of the month (seriously, HOW is it November already?!), we follow – loosely – the rules of FlyLady [see website here ]. (Pls ignore the barftastic language, and we suggest NOT signing up to the emails as there are rather a lot of them. All the info you need will be posted here on a daily basis.)

Helpful info on getting started here!.

We adopt a three-pronged approach:

-start or repeat baby steps

  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone or area (yes, just 15 mins focused work a day makes a difference!)

and/or

  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

[And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.]

NB
This is a very long-running thread so we may appear cliquey but we really aren't! All newcomers, long-termers, lurkers and intermittent returnees not only welcome to join in but positively encouraged to do so!

Another NB
Start where you are. There is no need to worry about being perfect – perfectionism = paralysis! There is no such thing as ‘falling behind’ with FlyLady, if you miss anything, just move on and continue as normal the next day.

Any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Good luck!

Grin Zoo Hope Lil Zoo has fantastic day! Porridge sounds lovely! I can sometimes get dd to eat it before school but she wouldn't eat much today because she has exams Sad.

(I am cackling to myself at the contrast between my imagined sumptious breakfast this morning in haughty/naughty corner and the reality ... which was the crusts of bread, ham and cheese that I cut off dd's sandwiches this morning with a cup of black tea!! Grin )

Yes Christmas definitely is happening I'm afraid Bowerbird5 but not much tangible evidence in my household atm to testify to that fact

Ta da:
animals
polished dd boots
dd lunch
emptied dw and shined sink, wiped down kitchen surfaces
two loads of washing in
prepped for fortnightly ironing lady who in reality is more like a four-weekly ironing lady but today she has arrived whooo hooo and chatted to her about her recent trip to the Vatican
went and "rescued" damp towels off the floor of dd's bedroom [harrumph] again [harrumph]
s & s
coffee to builders

Builders are here banging away so I am heading out (late this morning) on dog walk 1 and I am going to drop by butcher and baker and drop off memory stick to be developed (Christmas photo) at photography shop at same time.

Have a good day everyone!

Safe driving Hills if you are out and about in icy conditions!

OP posts:
Sludgecolours · 29/11/2017 08:47

And no, Christmas photo is NOT one of all of us sitting with cheesy grin sitting in front of fire wearing Christmas jumpers and hats ...Grin

It is (as usual) single shot of dd on summer holidays (to keep the UK rellies up to date).

Does anyone work from home? If so what do you do

Sludgecolours · 29/11/2017 08:55

I do admin for dh's office Afreshstart (mostly editing and typing texts and presentations and confidential personnel stuff) plus a bit of my own copy-editing work (please don't judge my appalling spelling and grammar from very hastily written posts here) given to me by contacts from my former life plus a few things I have been asked to edit in the course of things here (written by non-Eng-lang writers).

Also, we (electronically) farm out a LOT of stuff that, let's say, has to have a specialist type of presentation, to a working from home mum in Manchester (who was formerly a senior administrator in same field) but who wanted to work fewer (school) hours and only during term time. She is absolutely BRILL!

OP posts:
Bowerbird5 · 29/11/2017 08:57

Yeah! I do all my planning, drawing , cutting out letters/ numbers, researching ideas for next topic /classroom displays😁

Right I'm up out of naughty corner, I've had tea, porridge and now going to pretend I am at work so planning to get masses done. Oh no! DH is getting up. I was going to do sitting room before he cluttered it up by sitting there. Hoping to rope him into Home Bleugh today and get twice as many TaDas. I did ask him to do bathroom especially window yesterday. He did the window. Left it open so shower full of bits. Checked plug & he hadn't done it so I know !lazy B.

HillsBesideTheSea · 29/11/2017 08:58

SC you know me well. Hills based today rather than town roads, which ironically is generally better driving.

My to do list is out of control ergo i am ignoring it to go do something fun. Blush Antiprocrastination day? what antiprocrastination day?

Sludgecolours · 29/11/2017 08:59

Argh ... anti-procrastination day ... dog crossing his paws... had better go!

Mahoosive and encouraging wing flaps to all!

OP posts:
Sludgecolours · 29/11/2017 09:03

Oh dear Bowerbird about your dh's cleaning! (See threads in relationships about "deliberate or learned incompetence" - I am afraid I am getting cynical in my old age - and have been on Mumsnet for too long.) Home joint home bleugh goes better!

OP posts:
Sludgecolours · 29/11/2017 09:10

Oh yes Afreshstart I have just been reminded that we also farm out some UK accounting (billing) bits to WOHM in UK (where I forget) and more specialist templated admin bits to ex city secretary WOHM in East Anglia. As far as understand it though, all of these women have to have childcare in order to do their jobs sufficiently well in order to earn a useful amount ifyswim.

Right, really must fly (in all senses)! [Firmly closes screen until tonight]

OP posts:
Sludgecolours · 29/11/2017 09:23

Sufficiently well in terms of hours I mean!

Really am leaving now!

foxessocks · 29/11/2017 10:15

Ta da
Daily routine
Packed dc overnight bags ready for tomorrow

To do
Anti procrastination - bit random but eye drops as I'm forever putting off putting them in and my eyes are sore today.
Declutter in living room
Living room mission
Shopping etc later

Cagliostro · 29/11/2017 15:03

My WFH is tutoring other home ed kids (piano recorder and maths) and I have a couple of writers who send some work my way sometimes (one is an elderly author who writes by hand for me to type/edit, the other does dual language books so it's post translation editing (not the actual translating - I don't know Mandarin!). Not doing either at the moment obviously but I should phone the lovely author and update on the baby (she used to see my mum at the library, which is how I landed the work, but mum recently retired).

Feel like we have totally wasted a day TBH. I put a wash on. DH did take the Caglets to the woods but I can't help thinking how few days we have before Christmas and just generally how much stuff there is to sort out.

Callmecordelia · 29/11/2017 16:14

Ta da
Was feeling a bit down, so I put the decorations up last night and the Christmas tree today. It does look lovely - I sewed most of them a few years ago, to exactly fit the spaces available, but I still don't feel quite as happy as they normally make me. Sad

Cleaned kitchen
Two loads of washing
Knitted a bit
Wrote more cards

Think I need a Brew.

Sludgecolours · 29/11/2017 18:12

Evening everyone! Phew, always playing catch-up on a Wednesday ...school half day ... so as soon as morning routine and dog walk + one bit of work out of the way ... it's time for dd to walk in through the door again ... usually starving!

Got a fair bit done though including some Christmas prep and I bought a fedora hat of all things! (Going to the races over Christmas!)

Boudoir is looking pitiful as ever but I am intending to apply a mahoosive effort to it tomorrow.

Best of all dd, dh and I actually sat down over lunch and had a reasonably calm discussion about the ever changing Christmas plans (still waiting for news of op) and about "les delibés" the week before Christmas when there is nothing much happening at school but a Mass and collection of report on the last day (owing to the fact that the staff are "deliberating" ie marking exams.

Lovely to have some holiday to look forward to Toostressy good luck with your busy evening!

So sorry you are feeling low atm CallmeCordelia Flowers Bear Gin Take it steady x Hand sewn Christmas decorations sound absolutely lovely! Well done re: rest of list.

Sorry to hear your dd is under the weather Foxes and that you've had to change your plans for the day; can't be helped but it's so frustrating. Hope your dd feels better soon and that your eye recovers quickly too!

Cag try not to be downhearted - you are doing so brilliantly - and looking after a baby and home educating two other dc leaves very little time to do anything else I imagine.

I am panicking a bit myself about Christmas but I am determined not to make the same mistake as last year when I put energies in to panicking instead of doing. This year I am determined to use that angst to actual just do a few things every day and slowly - there is still plenty of time - it isn't even December yet. And breathe ... !

Humungous waves to everyone else!

OP posts:
Sludgecolours · 29/11/2017 18:17

x post

Right I am coming round to yours Zoo if gammon mash and cabbage is on the menu ... journey will only take 7 hrs or so ...alright with you? Grin Grin

Glad to hear Lil Zoo had good day (despite the cold). And well done re: great list as well!

I know delivering parcels is a horrid job and they are up against the clock/hardly get any breaks but what infuriates me is when I am in the house and see a "sorry you were out" card dropped through the letterbox when they haven't even ruddy well bothered to ring the doorbell!!! Grrrrrrr ...

OP posts:
Sludgecolours · 29/11/2017 18:19

Right, despite dd looking ill and as white as a sheet (she is ok but has bad cold) she is insisting I drive her to an activity so I am off out for the evening. Then back home to tidy up the mess that the builders have left. At some point we also need to eat supper. Anyway ...links for tomorrow coming up!

OP posts:
Sludgecolours · 29/11/2017 18:21

Good evening everyone!

Last links for the month of November coming up believe it or not! That went quickly didn't it?

Apologies for my somewhat haphazard thread-running this month (thread ran away with me rather!) and many thanks indeed to Cotswold and Hills and Toostressy for having my back and filling in (or for offering to fill in) when I couldn't do it! Flowers Flowers Flowers

Newcomers or oldies: if you have a spare moment during the day (and many of you definitely do not so don't worry!) please don't be backward in coming forward in offering to run the thread. It's proved to be (hopefully) a useful resource and support for those of us who are struggling with housework (for a variety of reasons) over the years and long may it continue! (I won't be able to be around as much next year so hoping to bring in some new recruits now Grin!)

Although it may take a wee while to get the hang of posting links when you do it for the first time - it really isn't difficult (even I can do it for example Grin!!) - and becomes quicker and easier as you go along. My only advice would be (if I may) always mention Fledglings in the title, and although we always welcome newcomers, don't put too much about enthusiastic house decluttering in the title or you will be inundated, and remember to include Honu in round-ups every so often (long-standing Fledgling, maths expert extraordinaire, and all round good egg) who has caring responsibilities and therefore (in impressively disciplined fashion beyond my capacity) limits her Mumsnetting to 15 mins a day inc this thread! Oh and for anyone who does volunteer - a few of us have easy "how to run the Fledgling thread instructions" which we can send out to you - ta very muchly in advance!

Right, handing over now to Hills for hectic December and to Toostressy for even more hectic January (if I remember correctly and if that is still ok. Don't hesitate to say if not and we will recalibrate!

Tally ho and love to all! xxx

The summary for Thurs 30th is available on the Flylady website here under "Today" and via the flight plan which should update itself automatically on a daily basis.

Baby-step no. 30 for Thurs 30th is here. Look at your calendar for the forthcoming month and organise cards and or presents! Particularly appropriate with Christmas coming up!

Btw newcomers fyi - the 31st step which we are obviously not posting this month - just talks about not getting bogged down by wanting to know everything about the Flylady system right at the beginning, it will all become clear as you go along! (Well clearer anyway!) The theory is that as your clutter goes away, you will find you have more time to do the zone detailed cleaning and the weekly home blessing hour etc.

Thursday will be our last day in Zone 5 : The Living Room, Den, Family Room (November 26-30) here.

Spend 15 mins decluttering the current zone.

When you have finished decluttering, the detailed cleaning list for Zone 5 (if you are at that stage) is here.

FYI we will be starting again on Friday in Zone 1: The Entrance, Front Porch and Dining Room.

Thursday's mission is : here. Last day in sitting room: have a detailed hoovering session!

The daily focus for Thursday is running errands.

The monthly habit for November is menu planning here!

Flykid's challenge: here (hopefully continually renewing itself).

Daily reminders (which should also update themselves automatically)
here.

Holiday missions here.

Well done for fabulous Flying throughout the month of November everyone!
