Neat and clean in 2017 - it's the January Flylady thread

Star HAPPY NEW YEAR Star

Welcome to the January Flylady thread, where we try and maintain our nests in good order by following the Flylady method. We'll post links each day to the Flylady website for the babysteps, daily focus and extra missions in the current zone. The habit of the month is shining your sink (or whatever other place in your home motivates you).

If you are just starting, Flylady recommends decluttering the weekly zone before doing the detailed cleaning and not to do too much at once!

All are welcome, so feel free to join us anytime.

wiped worktops
washed up dishes and saucepans
cooked supper
although dh had strop about the chips being too blonde
cleaned playroom (well moved some furniture around and swept floor)
hid some of dd's hoodies so that she has less stuff in her room and makes less laundry..it is becoming insane the amount of laundry she generates
short walk to buy groceries and book MOT
washed sheets
hung out to dry
booked MOT
put some more stuff for tip in the car
recycled and recycled some more
rubbish out

now I have to make the bed again
running club for beginners tomorrow, I am SCARED! and I don't have a suitably concealing top either

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 04/01/2017 22:21

Eliza, it's good to break the rules sometimes Grin.

Am in naughty corner. Got DDs to bed (DH working late) and just came to a standstill.
Tea done and washing in washing machine but nothing else really. Was going to work on essay but am shattered. Going to bed, hopefully can get up early tomorrow!

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 04/01/2017 22:21

Good luck tomorrow knitting!

Annoyinglyhappyperson · 04/01/2017 22:24

Been awful today as been out most of the day with dp
Never mind back to it tomorrow I need to massively declutter as we are moving soon so this is helping loads xx

Elenorrigbywoes · 04/01/2017 22:57

Ta das:
Food shopping
Kitchen cleaned and tidied
Bills paid online
Dry laundry sorted
Swept the hallway
Bins out
Went to the bank

Made a start on the playroom but it needs more storage boxes!

CotswoldStrife · 04/01/2017 23:08

knitting good luck with the running! AnnoyinglyHappy another mover on the thread (one of our other fledglings is about to move too), the thought fills me with dread - it's a great way to discover just how much stuff you really have!

Have done the dishes tonight (handwashing and emptying/filling the dishwasher)
Load of laundry which I will hang up before bed
Tip run today
Bit of tidying in lounge.

Will do links next, with additional link to the reminders page - instead of getting the emails individually there is a page with all the reminders (eg swish and swipe) for each day I may only have discovered this myself today in case anyone would like to read it.

The daily summary for Thursday (also available on the Flylady website at flight plan which should update automatically each day.

**

Baby-step no 5 - use kind words about yourself

We are in Zone 1 this week: the entrance, front porch and dining room

Spend 15 mins decluttering in Zone 1.

When you have finished decluttering, the detailed cleaning list (if you are at that stage) for Zone 1 is here

Mission for Thursday time to remove the Christmas decorations from the front door (Surely we’ve got another day yet?!)

The daily focus for Thursday is: errand day

The monthly habit for January is shine your sink

daily reminders (radio show times are probably not accurate for UK but can listen to previous shows/podcasts)

Slow progress here today as we came back from staying with friends and both DCs grumpy from lack of sleep. I did take out the glass recycling though, and it took about half an hour as I met a neighbour. Who knew de-cluttering would also provide social opportunities?

Did 15 mins de-clutter in the hallway which was nice.

Just asked DP whether our priority for tomorrow is de-Christmassing or charity shop. His expression was priceless.

Newchick · 05/01/2017 07:26

Feeling alternately like I'm wading through a swamp or my feet aren't touching the ground because I'm whizzing round so fast...

Last few days big ta das:
Devoted half a day to sofa shopping (worst shopping in world second only to swimming costume shopping) and found ridiculously reduced one at Multiyork which we could never have afforded in million years otherwise. Very grateful to the indecisive person who ordered it then sent it back! It's arriving tomorrow, really pleased and pathetically excited ;)
Christmas stuff all away

Kids are still off school till Monday so putting them to work sorting their rooms out. DS has got bored of waiting for me to repaint his room and has moved himself and all his possessions into spare room in effort to speed me up! Feeling guilty over not devoting days to it (middle child syndrome 😞) but telling myself involving him more will teach him self reliance...

Great to see all new folks on thread - progress not perfection people!

Afreshstartplease · 05/01/2017 07:29

Yesterday I got the tree down and sorted through the many coats on the front porch. However because this got done the kitchen wasn't as nice when I went to bed!

Today I need to do the rest of the decs and fix the kitchen

Afreshstartplease · 05/01/2017 07:33

zoo reading your post yesterday your house sounds like has similar issues to mine! Coats / bags / shoes making getting in and out of the house an obstacle course, and a mountain of shite on a kitchen worktop! Is this another thing bound to happen when having a few DC !

FlyWaxSleepRepeat · 05/01/2017 08:50

Thanks everyone for the Flowers, losing a caravan is an expensive lesson learned, onwards and upwards!!

I love how loads of us have bags of stuff for the charity shop Grin, it's definitely a 'new year' thing for me but I'm determined to make it a more regular (seasonal) task. Do you think the shops are inundated with stuff at this time of year? I'm wondering whether to stick ours in the garage for a month or so

I was back to work yesterday. I work from home so my house entrance (outside), hallway and stairs are always pretty much immaculate. I did sort out the cupboard under the stairs between clients yesterday, and hoovered the hallway (twice) and kitchen, and gave the downstairs loo a good clean.

Off today, still in pj's at the moment so...

To Do's

Get dressed
Make beds
Take car to DH's work for valeting
Walk puppy
Food shop
Take ironing to ironing lady
Make turkey pie to finally use the last of the frozen leftover turkey.
Order work stock
Whizz hoover round downstairs
Laundry load on timer (to finish tomorrow morning)

I think that'll do me for today. Happy flying all.

GreyandGrumpy48 · 05/01/2017 08:59

Progress is slow here. Did manage to deep clean the bathroom yesterday but DS got food poisoning over night so I need to give it another super clean later as well as deal with extra laundry etc. I thought things would get easier when they were teenagers. All decs down and house looking ok given the amount of clutter. I keep saying 15 minutes a day but there is so much stuff!

Stilllivinginazoo · 05/01/2017 09:33

afresh I blame ridiculous lack storage rather than our larger than average broods.I did think as got bigger they'd have less stuff....hasn't worked out like that!!at least since girls got new beds in summer we can now get storage box's under them
I realised at 5am(when got up n check diary) eon coming today.eeeeeek
My smart meters had fit ocy have stop working and have got temp card/key meters go in.cue frantic tidying as that corner houses computer desk(sobs) also back to school here today.without flylady I'd be rocking in corner blubbing already, but the zoolets were no trouble and grateful next door took them in her car as o have be here 8-3 waiting(its very cold here so they saw that great treat not gave drag pe kits and bags along)
Tadas
Fed cats
Realise eon mans due. Lob box D's Xmas gifts in his room
Sort all dd2gifts into full-time homes
Most lil zoos into fulltime homes
(Celestial pony castles moving under D's bed as he has cabin bed and space under ut with curtains so I can chuck stuff under and ignore it
Luckily he don't mind mlp and although 11 happily plays with lil zoo with themGrin
Fed zoolets(porridge and hot chocolate keep out the cold)
made pack ups
Clean bath
Detoothpaste sink and mirror
Bleach lav
Wave kids off
My breakfast
I am now go see what's behind sofa that will have be moved out so workman can get to cupboard(along computer table, which next on my list for a mad tidy)
Wish me luck!?

PurpleDaisies · 05/01/2017 09:43

zoo it is really hard to put stuff away without places to put it. We've just got a new shoe cabinet which has made a massive difference to the entrance. Currently there's nowhere in the hall to hang coats so they seem to get everywhere. It requires a more fundamental reorganisation of the space upstairs to put the pegs up which is a real nuisance.

Finally I managed to get dressed straight away on getting up which made a big difference. The weather's lovely and I still don't have a car so I'm planning on some useful things and then going for a walk.

To do
Sort out last of decorations for attic
Remake guest bedroom with lovely clean linen
Clean mirror in bathroom
Book vet appointment for guinea pig
Sweep living room floor

CotswoldStrife · 05/01/2017 10:11

Some impressive successes already this morning here. I'd better get on myself and keep up!

To-do's
Parcel to post
Load of laundry
Pay milk bill (via phone)
Add numerous after-school club dates and times to diary and calendar!

I'll check back at lunchtime!

OP posts:
Muppetslikecoco · 05/01/2017 10:17

Whatever will be will be today. I've got a low level headache and nausea so I'm just doing the basic routines and keeping the kids happy. I haven't felt like this since I was pregnant but I'm pretty confident that I'm not. Please don't let me be pregnant.

Ta da
Got up, dressed and made the beds
Swish and swipe
Made breakfast
WM on

To do
Lunchtime
Maybe dusting if I feel better
Bath the boys this evening

ScuttlbuttHarpy · 05/01/2017 10:24

Hello everyone, Ok so I am breaking the rules massively here, in fact I have thrown out the entire fly lady system, its not that I don't like the system, I do but it is one that I find difficult to keep to, but I will be emalgamating it once I have finished with the new method I have found, but it may take a while to come back. I'm doing konmari. I bought the book on Monday, and since then I have donated 7 bin liners of clothes and shoes, only mine and dp's so far, to charity. We are down to one set of drawers between us, owing to the konmari way of folding, which is making me feel the urge to IRON!!!! I'm loving it!! and getting so much more done!! so just thought I'd pop in and tell you all, and hopefully see you in a few months when I have decluttered everything and gone minimalist....or when it all goes tits up and I come back hanging my head in shame because my home is worse than before.

Afreshstartplease · 05/01/2017 10:38

Yes zoo I agree RE storage! We are 6 people in a 3 bed terraced house. We are lacking space and storage. Much looking forward to moving to bigger house!

Annoyinglyhappyperson · 05/01/2017 10:43

Today has been much better
Bins changed
Bed linen washed and changed
Bins taken out
Washing up done
Hoovering done
Sat doing ironing now
This post is keeping me motivated even tho I'm not doing it in order xx

Rshard · 05/01/2017 11:01

zoo also agree about storage! We have plenty but because we're doing the house up, things are never in their correct place at the moment. At the moment we're doing dd's room so some of her furniture is in the dining room etc. Still onwards, the end is in sight.

Ta da's
Dishwasher on
Shower screens cleaned
DD fed and walked to school
Me to WW
Living room half dusted
Car crap removed
Window cleaned in spare room
Kitchen floor swept and mopped

To do
Finish dusting
Vacuum car
Dinner (sausages yum!)
Vacuum living room
Clean rest of bathroom

CotswoldStrife · 05/01/2017 13:58

I like the KonMari book too, but can't face getting everything together and tackling it at once! There are some good FB groups if you are doing it Scuttlbutt, good luck with the purge! It will be much easier to maintain.

I am also on the paracetamol for a headache today - I hope it goes soon and that yours isn't a migraine Muppets

So have sent parcel - at extreme cost, due to Royal Mail's charges. Will look into this as need to send one to Europe and don't want to go through that again!
Currently running second load of laundry through machine.
Paid milk bill
Not done the dates yet (but got another one to add!).

Have a good afternoon, see you later clutter-busters!
