Does anyone fancy a spring cleaning thread?

Seeing as the sun is shining I decided to start my spring clean today! Aiming to do a deep clean of one room every couple of days to fit around work and family life. Anyone fancy joining me for encouragement and general chat about progress?! Smile

I blitzed my kitchen today.

Every cupboard was emptied, cleaned and sorted through. Got rid of two black bags of rubbish and out of date foods, old oven trays and excess greasy frying pans. I also have a box of mugs, casserole pots, chopping boards (why on earth did I own 8 chopping boards?!), drinking glasses, egg cups and a Party Penguin Hmm (used once) which will all go to the charity shop. Also deep cleaned the hob and oven and ran a hot cycle of vinegar through the washing machine and cleaned out the bit where the powder goes.

Ddog's belongings also got a spring clean. Old chewed up toys in the bin and a few coats that are too small and some extra collars are off to the charity shop as well.

I had hoped this would be my plans for easter bank holiday next week, but I started early.

Quickchangeup · 19/03/2016 18:21

London-I know what you mean about all the stuff hanging in the hallway, it looks so much better when it's clear!
Garlic- sounds like you've had a very productive day! Can I ask what is a party penguin?!
I've managed a couple of loads of washing and a clean of the kitchen. Hoping to give it a proper deep clean on Monday before work. Haven't finished dining room largely due to DD wanting to bake a cake, which is currently in the oven. Oh and managed to get DS school shoes-phew!

A party penguin is a Mr Frosty.

I fondly remember Mr Frosty from my childhood in the 90's, but party penguin was the biggest disappointment. Long may he live within the charity shop.

Quickchangeup · 19/03/2016 21:46

Oh I always wanted a mr frosty but my mum wouldn't buy me it! Grin

garlicbreathing · 19/03/2016 21:55

Mr frosty was amazing! You can get a old 90's one on Ebay for quite cheap actually!
I'd never use it, so I'm not tempted.

Morning - can't believe I'm up so early on a Sunday! Plan for today is to carry on with the jobs I listed yesterday, so the living room, dining room, two under-stairs cupboards and the laundry. One load has just finished washing (just heard it click!), so I'll stick another lot in, plus there's the charity shop visit I'll make today. I'll probably also spruce up the upstairs again, just to keep it maintained. The house is remaining clear and every day it's looking better. So glad you started this thread, Quickchangeup! What's everyone else doing today, and is everyone in full health now? OliviaTJoyce, I had a look at your list, it seems to cover everything. Have you started on any of it yet?

Quickchangeup · 20/03/2016 08:29

Morning-amazingly I'm the only person awake in my house! It's so lovely and peaceful! We are out this morning but will be home just after lunch. My plan today is to strip down my cooker and give it all a really good clean! I'm going to cheat and pop some of the parts in the dishwasher! May as well make use of it! Then I'm going to iron all of the school uniform/work wear for the week. I started doing this a month or so back and it's so much easier through the week if it's all 100% ready and hanging waiting to be worn. Don't know why I didn't do it before?!
I'm not in Pinterest so I can't look at OliviaTJoyce checklist. Confused

DamsenBerry · 20/03/2016 08:31

Today my plan is to do a general tidy/clean of the whole house- just the normal housework that needs doing.

Then I'm going to-
Deep clean hallway, downstairs loo and the dumping ground (bottom of stairs)

Wash paintwork, doors and frames, skirting boards downstairs.

I live in a small 2-up-2-down new build terrace (you can imagine how small the rooms are) so this is a nice bite size intro to spring cleaning today.

Tomorrow is my weekday day off, so I've got a million appointments booked, but I'm going to try and get over to my grandads to borrow his carpet cleaner machine thing. The dog has ruined my carpets recently, to embarrassed too have guests at the mo!

LondonCharlady · 21/03/2016 10:56

Morning all, now I'm the one with a sick child! Had to keep the little one off today as she's been sick, but she's perked up now. I have to keep her off until Wednesday.

I've got so much washing done, just a few more items and it'll all be finished. The older one's uniform was washed yesterday so I'll follow your example, Quickchangeup, and iron it all today. She has a non-uniform day today so that was easy. You're absolutely right that it makes all the difference in the morning, to have everything ready. I used to do this every week but recently I've lapsed, which makes things harder. This thread is definitely getting me back on track! At some point I intend to tackle the junk in the garage and loft, probably when the little one's back at nursery and I can get stuck in without distractions. I don't have any major plans for today, but I'll certainly get something done - I'll update later. Where's everyone else at?

Grumpyoldblonde · 21/03/2016 11:30

Work seems to have gone quiet (I work from home) so I am about to pull out the sofa's to hoover behind them, what shall I find? 35 hair bands? 6 random pens? crisp crumbs? Will let you know Smile

Quickchangeup · 21/03/2016 15:31

Hi London & Grumpy!
Sorry to hear you've got an ill child now London! Still you've had a chance to clear all your washing so that's great. Did you get the ironing sorted? I've got loads to now get put away.
Grumpy did you find any money behind the sofa?! I found an awful lot of Cheerios when I did mine last. A few weeks ago I completely stripped my sofas and washed everything-you wouldn't believe the difference it made. That's what spurred me on really to get on with spring cleaning!
So today I've done nothing! Washed and got dried a couple of loads and went to work. Got loads of running around to do this evening for my eldest and need to get to a supermarket. Feeling very run down and worn out so I've paced myself today. Hopefully I will feel more up for it tomorrow.

OP posts:
Grumpyoldblonde · 21/03/2016 15:36

Ha Quick don't talk to me about cheerios, little buggers get everywhere and I dropped a bowl full on the floor this morning! No money found sadly, but I did find hairgrips/bands galore, along with pen lids, cashew nuts, fluff (of course) and random sweet wrappers.
Hope everyone feels a bit better tomorrow, not sure I belong on this thread, you use words I don't understand - what is this 'ironing' of which you speak Smile

CremeEggThief · 21/03/2016 15:37

Can I join? I have mild CFS, so I can't do too much before it affects my fatigue levels. I am extremely tidy and very good at keeping up basic cleaning, but deep cleaning is more of a struggle for me. Anyway, I made a start yesterday. In an hour, I did all the downstairs windows and front door glass panels inside and outside and I also cleaned some outside surfaces. Today, again in an hour, I cleaned and dried the fridge, its top and 5 kitchen cupboards ( doors, insides and tops). I hope to finish off the kitchen tomorrow, so another 5 cupboards, 3 drawers and the drainer rack and draining board.

Grumpyoldblonde · 21/03/2016 15:51

CremeEggThief That is a lot of work, don't overdo it, I sympathise with the CFS, at my worst I can barely crawl upstairs (it comes and goes in cycles), make sure you take lots of breaks, although I guess you know your limits if you have had it a while.

CremeEggThief · 21/03/2016 16:00

Thanks Grumpy. It's about my limit. I really want to do more now, but I'm stopping myself, as I know I'll pay for it later on. I'm getting the hang of pacing at lastSmile.

Grumpyoldblonde · 22/03/2016 09:34

Oh what a beautiful morning (sings) sun is shining (and the garden looks like a horror story) still too wet out there to do anything.
Anyone have plans today? I just cleaned my shower doors, they are a pig to keep smear free but I bought Stardrops vinegar spray and now they are shiny gorgeous again with minimal effort (maximum stink though), I think it is much better than Viakal or Cillit Bang, and only £1.00.
Is it a bit early to think about reseeding the lawn I wonder?

Quickchangeup · 22/03/2016 09:42

Morning fellow Spring cleaners. I'm afraid i am not full of the joys of Spring like you today grumpy! I am shattered. Honestly I have no idea what's wrong with me, I could literally go to bed and stay there for a week. Exhausted. My brain doesn't seem to be able to function clearly either. Grrr!
Right anyway enough moaning. Today I'm working, have to take one child to a medical appointment and the other is having a friend for tea. This means that today I'll just be doing a general clean and a big effort to tidy up. Also going to make ratatouille in hope that a ton of veg will perk me up.
Anyone else want to share their plans for today?

OP posts:
Quickchangeup · 22/03/2016 09:55

Reading that back I sound like a heartless cow moaning about feeling tired when you both, grumpy & cremeegg are dealing with CFS. Ignore me. I'm just frustrated at the mo as I feel like I never quite get the forward momentum going iyswim. And honestly my brain just isn't engaging today. Apologies.

alexw · 22/03/2016 10:03

I'd like to join if not too late. Have broken up from school a few days before children so hoping to get house nice and sparkly before they finish.

Grumpyoldblonde · 22/03/2016 10:07

Don't apologise quick if you are tired you are tired, yes, CFS does take it to a whole new realm but it doesn't mean other people don't get worn out.
Hi alexw nice and sparkly before the kids trash it again over Easter?! are you doing a general big clean or are there particular things you need to tackle?

MissRabbitHasTooManyJobs · 22/03/2016 10:17

Place marking for later, taking my nan out now but am in full spring cleaning mode :)

Quickchangeup · 22/03/2016 10:18

Hi alexw, we welcome all newcomers!

OP posts:
Quickchangeup · 22/03/2016 11:16

Ok so progress so far has been tea and breakfast. Dishwasher on, wash ready to go on. Downstairs loo cleaned-omg so much easier as it was virtually immaculate after last weeks deep clean! Dishbrush soaking in disinfectant, making my house smell all piney! Just going to give the kitchen a good clean and I'll leave my bucket with some disinfectant to freshen it up whilst I work for a couple of hours. Before school run and appt I will quickly give down stairs hard floors a mop.

OP posts:
Dandelionflower · 22/03/2016 12:18

Can I join too?

I've lived in my house for 7 years now, moved when dd was a newborn. I've never done a proper deep clean in all that time Blush and it really shows now. I have quite a lot of clutter as I'm not good at throwing things away, I might use it one day... I feel ready to get it sorted now.

I've stripped the beds and done two loads of washing that's out drying. I've gave the bathroom a quick clean.

I have a wonderful tip to keep you motivated- yesterday I washed the front door inside and out, glass and door frame too. Washed the walls and skirting boards in the v.small entrance area, tidied the shoes (we don't need shoes for all occasions out all the time) Gave the carpet a very good hoover. It's one of the last areas I thought about tackling but every time I come in the front door it makes me smile and ready to sort the rest of the house out.

Top tip number two - wash the windows and let the sun shine through.

(Sorry for the long post)

Grumpyoldblonde · 22/03/2016 12:23

I am just sorting out the last bits of paperwork and putting essentials into lovely new files, and then I shall tackle the patio doors.
Hi Dandelion lovely and sunny here, so I shall follow your lead and do the doors in a minute, I need the sun streaming through.
