I sucked the first two fingers on my right hand, until I was 16 and had a brace to correct the teeth I had pushed out. It was one of those awful huge mouth full of plastic ones, with a head thing - fortunately I didn't have to wear the head part at school!
I cried myself to sleep for a week because I found it so hard to drop off without having my fingers to suck.

My Mum and Dad say they wish they'd given me a dummy when I was a baby because that would have been easier to take away than my hand! They tried everything, plasters, painting my fingers with some grim tasting stuff, reward, punishments. None of it worked.
Having the brace mostly stopped me, but for a good few years afterwards I would find myself doing it if I was really really tired - and actually the first day I was able to sleep on my side after my section with DS, I curled up and put my fingers in my mouth - really weird!

ImASlatternGetMeOutOfHere · 14/10/2010 18:23

Anon either leave him to it and let him grow out of it or put that yukky stuff on him.

Yay!! to Alice for donating breast milk, well done that lady.

Ali, don't panic about it. It won't kill him to have something like toast for tea for one night. If you have any tinned fruit then give him that as well. Oh! and you are not crap.

Pumpkinbummum · 14/10/2010 18:26

oh and thumb sucking I have never knew any thumb suckers but isn't there an unpleasant tasting stuff you can get for nailbiters maybe that might work
or put a plaster on his thumb so he realises everytime he puts it to his mouth, since he is doing it subconciously

anonymousbird · 14/10/2010 18:40

Pumpkin - am currently using the plasters. But they "come off in his sleep" Hmm. And obviously only last until I've left the playground when I drop him at school.

May resort to the yucky stuff, but will give plasters two more days. I have til next Friday to crack this!!!!

anonymousbrainsnatcher · 14/10/2010 19:42

Hello HMHB.

The only cake I know how to make is classic chocolate sponge - two halves - cream/jam middle and then slices/pieces of strawberry on the top.

Plus a dusting of icing sugar to hide the bumpy bits give it a better finished look.

It's DD's favourite (lucky that!)

I am the woman who only learnt to bake a cake about two years ago, cannot make a cupcake to save her life. I also have absolutely no idea what to do with icing.

I once attempted to ice biscuits and they were SO BAD that I told DH that my DS had done it (then aged 4) and DH said, oh my god, thank god, I thought you were going to say you did it. Blush To this day I have never confessed. Double Blush

Pumpkinbummum · 14/10/2010 20:04

anon I only learnt how to ice a cake a year ago in May for dd1s communion
now I'm thinking of starting a business, I have a wedding cake for 2 weeks time, and the bride has gave me her colours and left the rest to me[eek] so there is hope for us all

HMHB Bake a large square,
cut in half,
one half on top of other
ice with pink or white icing
decorate with pink & white flowers/butterflies
a beautiful big one
and yes I am shocked she is 1

HalfMumHalfBiscuit · 14/10/2010 20:15

Am currently watching Nigella, not for inspiration but because she is massively entertainingly cheesy.

Anon - that is funny about saying your DS made them!

PBM - I think I will go along those kind of lines. I have got some colour for the icing already so we'll see how we go.

JKS - OR if I can't be bothered tomorrow I shall buy one on Sat am.

anonymousbrainsnatcher · 14/10/2010 20:28

HMHB I have Nigella on Sky Plus, will watch with supper to give me a larf.

Pumpkin - am impressed with your skills!!!! OOoooo.

DC were being particularly sweet today, we went for hair cuts after school and they were just divinely behaved (phew). And then happily got home, ate a couple of sandwiches, did reading with no complaints or reminding, got ready for bed, and DD said "I miss you Mummy when I am at school, I think about you all the time."

If only every day were like this?!?!?

DH supposed to be calling back. Just had a crappy line from Canada - wish he'd hurry up. Don't dare cook my omelette as he is bound to call just as I do and it will ruin.

Anon - you will spray the tv with food when you see her make Spagetti with....Marmite?

anonymousbrainsnatcher · 14/10/2010 21:21

Well done JKS. I sold three pairs of wellies today (yey) so has spurred me into listing some more in the next few days.

Got good prices for them too.. it all helps!

HMHB - am intrigued. Ran out of steam tonight. By the time had spoken to DH, made quick omelette, just eaten, and going for early night. Last two nights been somewhat disjointed due to the Chilean goings on... Am pooped proper. Nigella's and her inner thigh wibbles will just have to wait until tomorrow....!

Night night.

JustKeepSwimming · 14/10/2010 21:27

Marmite - yuck!

Anon - it doesn't matter to me much how much they all go for - though the higher the better obv! - it's all just to get some pennies in my Paypal account which will go straight out again for Christmas bits for the boys :)

anonymousbrainsnatcher · 15/10/2010 09:00

morning

JKS it is so pleasing, isn't it, to sell anything on Ebay. I buy nearly everything I need for my kids off ebay (hence my horror at the expensive jeans!) and so it keeps us going big time. Stuff I would never be able to afford full price. People over buy so much for their children that you can get great stuff at knock down prices. I am a huge fan! The last three winters DD has had Naturino boots (they are about £80 new Confused) and I haven't spent more than £10 on any pair of them. And they sell for at least what I paid for them the next year because the quality is just so good.

Haven't really got my head around Christmas yet. Have DD's birthday in a couple of weeks first, and then we have to move, so Christmas is going to be a fairly low key affair. Not necessarily a bad thing!

Anyway, DC got a surprise lift to school today which was a big bonus for me. Meant I could place Ocado order to come TODAY!!! Energy levels are back approaching normal after the best night's sleep in weeks... So here goes:

TODAY

  • Up, showered and dressed me and DC?s DONE
  • DC?s to school DONE
  • Place Ocado shop DONE
  • general tidy, make beds etc
  • Two wash loads ? first one in
  • DW run
  • Sort out insurance for building project
  • Go through Builder's spec and final detailed quote
  • Excess bedding and summer clothes into vacuum bags
  • Chickens
  • Walk dog
  • Post ebay items
  • Cooking with DD at school
  • Take DD swimming
  • DD and DS out for tea
  • Unpack Ocado shop
  • Eat dinner and another early night!

Next couple of days

  • Need an "outing" for Saturday
  • Reading with DS and DD
  • DS Rugby tournament
  • List more ebay

Anon - i love watching my selling items, get totally addicted to checking! Those boots sound a bargain.
DH & I have this theory that those people who can't really afford it spend ridiculous amounts on their kids as if to prove everyone wrong, that they can afford it. which is mad.
We could prob afford to buy new lots of the bits i buy but i love a bargain and i have no prob with the DC getting second hand stuff - some people really do though Confused
And there is a small environmental thing about reusing too which i like :)

anonymousbrainsnatcher · 15/10/2010 09:27

I completely agree - no worries about second hand at all. Once it has been worn once by your own child, it is second hand! I remember when we were expecting DS, people would say "I would offer you X Y and Z hand me down, but I expect you want to buy new". "Errrr..... not worried, pass me those hand me downs!!!!!"

I adore a bargain. DH used to really wonder about me Hmm but has got used to it now. He sees one of the kids in a new top etc and now just says "Ebay?". To which the answer is invariably "yes"! The only thing I buy new is their school shoes. Even uniform I tend to get what I can from the school second hand shop. DS goes through trousers and jumpers like there is no tomorrow!

Cor, all this bargain/selling talk makes we want to list some more. Need to sort the spare room though as it is a mix of ebay items and storage items.....

Morning lovelies Smile

My kids hardly had anything new as babies as got handed down so much lovely stuff. DD now has new stuff but that is because there gets less to hand down as the kids get older due to them actually wearing through them. Spent £21 in H&M yesterday on DD, got 3 pairs of winter trousers and a jumper for her.

F went to sleep at 10pm woke at 5am!!! Woohoo! So feeling quite normal today, look shocking though due to not tking my make up off last night Blush [slattern]

Why is laundry such an ongoing problem? It really is such a full time job, god knows how anyone has time to iron!

DONE
Everyone up
Breakfast
Do washing up (DH emptied the dishy for me)
Tidy kitchen sides and wipe
Put breast pump in steriliser
Express some milk
Empty tumble and take clean washing upstairs
Put wet washing into tumble
Make our bed
Put sme sheets in the wash (they have been waiting to be washed since the weekend Blush)
Separate washing into piles (got about 4/5 loads Confused
Drink tea
Clean loo

TO DO
Continue with the souless task that is the laundry
Early lunch and make DH a sandwich to take up to his work after BF group
Get everyone ready to leave the house by 12 (well by 12.20, but aim for 12 and we might just make it!)
BF group 12.30 (take some pencils and colouring pages for DD and other little girl)
See DH at his office (show F off too)
Do horses - try to skip field out today
Figure out what to have for dinner (bolognese?)
Bath DC's
DD bed
