We've had a new mattress, so decided to clear everything off our ottoman. Our bed & Ottoman very rarely looks this tidy. Does this look dated?

Our bed is similar to this, we have had it since about 1990. Why bother to change, if it is comfortable?

For me its the beechwood and silver furniature combination that gives it early 2000s vibes.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 13/05/2026 00:40

@Pistachiocake In what century? When was red and cream ever not dated?

Downunderduchess · 13/05/2026 02:26

Style preferences are subjective. It’s not my style, but if you are happy with it and it’s comfortable that should be all that matters. I find the use of the colour red jarring in home decor personally. If you wanted to update you could do that with new bed linen etc. if you can’t afford a total room overhaul at the moment.

Can you ditch the red and embrace the neutrals?

This looks wonderful ! @Readinggirl

redlorryyello · 12/05/2026 21:26

I asked ChatGPT to modernise it for you.

I think this looks great, keeps the red but with a few tweaks

craycray431 · 13/05/2026 03:21

The red is waaaay too harsh. Light aubergine would be a much better colour to use if you want a bit of red hint in the room.

CupcakeDreams · 13/05/2026 03:41

Yes, unfortunately. The lamps are way too small. The bright red is very late 90s early 2000s.

It would look massively better if you were to change the duvet to something more modern and maybe consider oversize lamps.

I think the headboard and side tables can be salvaged if you distract with an update on these other things.

But, if you like it and as others have said, you don't need to change a thing.

OvernightBloats · 13/05/2026 04:32

Ditch the 'Love' slogan cushion which is making it look more like a teenage girl's room. Slogan stuff is very dated.

ThisTaupeZebra · 13/05/2026 07:45

Its interesting everybody is going on about the bed frame. Its not great, but to me the issue is the magnolia walls and pine bedside tables that make it look like it was decorated by a Blairite landlord. The red just makes that aspect of it worse, but getting rid of the red isn't going to get rid of the underlying vibe.

Echobelly · 13/05/2026 07:55

Yeah, looks kind 90s/early 2000s, but TBH, who cares? I try to avoid doing anything 'fashionable' with decoration. We even had a Provencal style kitchen in our last place when they'd been out of fashion for 20 years!

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 13/05/2026 08:24

@Echobelly Why start a thread if the Op doesn’t care? I’d care too. Fashion as you call it, could also be classy. You might not care, but some of us like a more up to date look and the op can easily achieve that and enjoy the room when she walks into it. Some of us like to be proud of our spaces, not wince every day!

It's not just dated it's not even scaled properly ! The ottoman needs to be at least as big as the end of the bed go for something with a fabric velvet or texture or ribbed the red plastic is super dated !
Furniture if U don't want to change don't but get some bedside lamps !
Maybe get a headboard bed that's matches a new ottoman !
The little pillows throw them away !
Get a new throw a proper bedspread one !
And change duvet rug and blinds to a neutral or softer colour !
That's what I would do if u don't want to fully renovate the room !

Readinggirl · 13/05/2026 09:16

I've attached a photo of the rest of the room if that helps. Please ignore the mess around the dressing table, that's my best job to sort. Thank you for all your advice. I am going to look at larger statement lamps and go from there.

It looks dated and a bit cheesy, yes.

but it also looks cozy, clean and tidy. Our bed definitely definitely doesn’t look that nice! (Unless the cleaner made it…)

Thanks for this. To be honest, the room hasn't been updated for a long time, other things have taken priority. Can't justify spending much at mo, for various reasons. I will look for some larger lamps, looking for ideas. Then look at some of the other ideas. I like the idea of a larger ottoman but can't spend too much.

Honestly, yes.
But, does it matter? Your bedroom should be how you like it. Does anyone else even see it?

PrincessofWells · 13/05/2026 09:31

Primark has some great cotton bedding at low prices.

Nannyfannybanny · 13/05/2026 09:35

Guess what people, both the Sunday supplements in both the sun and Mail have red accessories as the latest trend.

Are duvets out of fashion now then?

No keep your duvet ! In a colour u gunna accent with but I love a good proper bed throw ontop of the duvet I'll find a pic.
Now I've seen updated pic ! And u say u dont wanna renovate u need to make the room more to scale like placement ? If that makes sense
Your dressing table is not in the right place it's squashed in the corner make this more central !
Also your TV and unit is again to small ! It's need to be bigger against that whole wall !
And organise everything so doesn't look messy !

MiaKulper · 13/05/2026 09:47

The room looks fine @Readinggirl , it's big. Keep the red.

Look on Freecycle for lamps.

Readinggirl · 13/05/2026 09:48

SeashellDREAMS · 12/05/2026 21:00

I think that the only thing that looks a bit out of place in this room is the folded throw at the end of the bed.
It's hard to tell exactly from the photo, and it really is all about balance of tones, but I think a warm chocolate brown throw might look lovely with the slightly subdued coloured ottoman, and cushions.

What colour ottoman? Finance is going to determine what I do really.
