Does this look dated?

We've had a new mattress, so decided to clear everything off our ottoman. Our bed & Ottoman very rarely looks this tidy. Does this look dated?

It is dated and quite mis-matched style wise. The mirrored bed frame doesn't go with the bedside cabinets, but I guess it does go with the stark red ottoman. It looks quite cold (not as in temperature) and red isn't a calming colour that you should have in a bedroom. There is a reason why fast food places are red. They want people to come in, eat quickly, and leave.

I think you should paint the walls something like olive or sage, change the cushions for more warmer colours and either throw something over the ottoman or just get rid of it. You could paint the bedside cabinets too I guess, unless they are mdf. The bed frame will still be an issue but it might not stand out as much if you have more muted colours around it.

I know someone said up-thread that it's a Scandinavian look, it really isn't. Scandinavian look is muted, natural materials and soft lighting. I do think you could get some inspiration from googling Scandi bedrooms though.

Thank you, will think about these suggestions.

Keep the red and use a brighter duvet cover.

I like the idea of changing the handles, but have no idea how to do that, and my hubby isn't good at DIY either 🤣

Google it. It's very simple usually.

Yes, your room is dated, but you appear to like it, so who cares?

If you want to give it more style I would go down the Scandinavian route.

Sorry, I meant I would look at Scandinavian red and white bedrooms.

pookie29 · 12/05/2026 20:46

It is dated but contrary to other posters I think it’s the bed frame rather than the red. Red can be a nice accent colour, but the bed frame is definitely giving early 2000s!

Threeslothsontheshirt · 12/05/2026 20:46

It’s lovely and tidy. Just ditch all the red in the photo for a more modern look xx

rwalker · 12/05/2026 20:46

Sack off the red
the room is very plain so you can get done very bold bright bedding
black ottoman and some nice big lamps

Gingercar · 12/05/2026 20:48

Nobody is going to see your bedroom but you. If you like it, so what..? I was looking at our bedroom wardrobe because it the cheapest looking one in the house. But then I thought “who’s gonna see it?”

TheChosenTwo · 12/05/2026 20:49

I just think nothing matches to pull it all together, the bed frame is totally at odds to the bedside tables and the duvet cover does look pretty dated.
Agree with the red Love cushion not really going.
But a lot of things are easy to sort if you are too bothered.
We loved with mismatching bedroom furniture for years while we focussed on renovating the rest of our house - our bedroom came last because dh and I are the only people who use it (obviously the kids come in and out like yo-yos even at the grand old adult ages they are now 😂) but it was always our sanctuary even when it wasn’t as nice as it is now. Your bedroom is just for you so if you love it that’s all that matters and if you don’t there are lots of recommendations as to how you could change a few things here and there.

I don't particularly like black, but I like the large lamps idea. Could U post some ideas please? I wouldn't want anything too fragile though, as I'm liable to knock them over 😂

Look get rid of those cushions and buy a decent bedspread of any colour - that alone would make a huge difference - but really it doesn’t matter. It’s only for you!

Mightymighty · 12/05/2026 20:58

If you like it and it feels homey, that should be enough.

Everything in my home is dated/vintage. I think the trends in the past 5 years have been ugly. I don’t care what others like because it’s MY home.

I like red but you don’t have enough of it, it’s looks like after thought. Bringing in more reds would lift it and in different shades

We do have a red rug and red blinds.

Thank you. No, not selling, but I'm not very good at this sort of thing. I was wondering more if the throw at the end of the bed was outdated? I didn't think the red would be, to be honest.

I think that the only thing that looks a bit out of place in this room is the folded throw at the end of the bed.
It's hard to tell exactly from the photo, and it really is all about balance of tones, but I think a warm chocolate brown throw might look lovely with the slightly subdued coloured ottoman, and cushions.

margegunderson · 12/05/2026 21:00

It’s your bedroom. Personally I really like the red cutting through all the neutrals. Who wants to live in a sea of neutral?

Autumngirl5 · 12/05/2026 21:01

It is all about what you love and if you love it, perfect!

whattheysay · 12/05/2026 21:01

You must have thought yourself that it looks dated as you started a thread asking if it’s dated?

treefan · 12/05/2026 21:03

Its lovely op.
My room is a king bed and a pop-up single wardrobe, and childish bed cover toped with a knitted quilt i made.

Laptop and snacks.

MiaKulper · 12/05/2026 21:03

The red is fine. It's not a traditional bedroom colour.

I'd paint the bedside tables and change the knobs (you don't need any DIY skills other than knowing how to operate a screwdriver)

Readinggirl · 12/05/2026 20:59

We do have a red rug and red blinds.

I have a pink blind that was in my flat when i moved lol.
And nothing matches in my room,

If your happy with it thats all that counts, if i put a pick of my room up commenters would ask if i was menally stable😆.

KojaksLollipop · 12/05/2026 21:12

An Instant improvement would be to get rid of the Love cushion. The others aren’t so bad if they match other things in the room.

Thanks, that's an idea about brown throw, but don't want the room to look dark.
