I have just changed my lounge grey carpet for a lovely oak floor but something just doesn’t look right . My sofas are mid charcoal leather and silver grey chenille curtains. Any suggestions/ help needed.

That's the kind of thing needed to lift the room...nice find @coralgeo

wickerhearth · 29/01/2023 09:30

Op you can go for a natural jute rug as well, I would go for oval shape.

DaVariance · 29/01/2023 13:20

Mix the yellow with the plum cushions

DaVariance · 29/01/2023 13:24

And put something bright on that side table or a large picture above it

Holmfirthrita · 29/01/2023 13:48

I have added another cushion better or not

I wouldn't reintroduce the yellow cushions personally - that would be too much plain colour imho, although if they were textured or a different shape/size it might be a different matter.

Regarding jute rugs - I'd advise caution when choosing these. We purchased a fairly large 9' x 6' fringed jute rug from a reputable UK seller on eBay in late 2021 as we struggled to get the one we liked from Dunelm. At £180 it wasn't ridiculously cheap but obviously not hyper expensive either, however as it was just for our kitchen we didn't want to spend too much.

Just over a year on, the fringe has haemorrhaged huge chunks and the overall surface has lots of pulls/plucks (no cats and our dogs don't claw it). Next time I'll be buying one from somewhere like crucial trading or Roger Oates - way more £££ but will be far more hard wearing!

You mentioned you have bay windows but they don't look like bay windows in the photos? Anyway doesn't really matter either way!

Holmfirthrita · 29/01/2023 17:41

I have seen some cushions in augburgine /purple like the orange does anyone think they might look good in my room x

OP there's only so much you can do with a couple of cushions. You need some colour. Get a big print for the walls or some plants or something that isn't leather or chrome.

Holmfirthrita · 29/01/2023 17:56

Does anyone think augburgine/ purple would look ok instead of the orange and then add more colour.?

LibertyLily · 29/01/2023 18:51

Really I don't think it matters whether you choose orange or aubergine/purple (unless you have a personal preference drawing you to one or the other) - I think it's more pattern and colour you should be aiming for.

Everything (walls, rug, curtains etc) is very plain at the moment and more interest is needed. That could be - a colourful patterned rug/curtains/cushions/throw and/or artwork.

Imho, you need to inject your own personality and style into the space so it looks less generic and more 'you' 😊

LibertyLily · 29/01/2023 19:04

My own interior style is obviously not going to be everyone's taste and I'm certainly not suggesting it would be yours @Holmfirthrita 😉 but I'm attaching a couple of pics of our own living space to illustrate how I'm mixing colours and styles and layering pattern etc.

It's very much a work in progress - unlike your own gorgeous wood floor we still don't have ours laid, but fortunately most is currently covered by our huge vintage rug. I keep delving into our vast cushion reserves, experimenting till I'm happy with the results....so I totally feel your pain!

The first pic is my current favourite selection of cushions - although one is actually a cushion wrapped in a dress, lol, which I plan (now I'm happy with the combo) to replace with a similarly patterned cushion and I have two I plan to dye new colours 😀

I really like the orange but as a PP said, it's some sort of pattern or interest you need. It's all very bland at the moment with blank walls, pale curtains, bare flooring.

We have oak floor with a dark grey sofa, and dark wood furniture. We got a big rug in a lighter pattern, light beige-ish curtains with a couple of stripes of teal at the top, and a couple of colourful cushions for the sofa. My walls are also a blue/grey kind of colour, but more blue than grey.

Thank you @wickerhearth 🙂

coralgeo · 29/01/2023 23:31

OP I think you're focusing too much on cushion colour. Cushion colour alone isn't going to transform the room. You should choose a new rug as your priority - just make sure it's big enough to sit under the sofa and go for something patterned.

Holmfirthrita · 30/01/2023 14:11

Having one of these colour combinations
mustard, orange , or plum/ purple . Which one please?

Can you take a pic of the plum and yellow cushions together without the grey one?

Krakenes · 30/01/2023 15:41

If you’re going to keep the sofas, I think you need to stick to cool colour combinations. Like these for example:

Does the grey check not look ok ? I thought it toned with the silver grey curtains x

The plum cushions are too dark against the sofas. I would put the cushions on hold for a bit, get a rug and pick out some of the colours from the rug, but don’t go too matching. Instead of going for two sets of cushions in each colour, just go for one in each colour, mix up the textures/patterns/sizes.
