I have just changed my lounge grey carpet for a lovely oak floor but something just doesn’t look right . My sofas are mid charcoal leather and silver grey chenille curtains. Any suggestions/ help needed.

I also have to say I disagree with the PPs who've said the sofas don't work with the floor. They absolutely can with a larger rug and some more colour and interest around the room.

TiaraBoo · 27/01/2023 10:21

If it was me, I would get rid of the yellow coloured cushions and go for brighter colours (as these are the colours I like) like hot pink, teal, yellow (not your yellow) for cushions and I’d add a new rug with colour/pattern, picture on the wall, a vase. Maybe dark green curtains.

A luscious warm rug would help. We had wooden floor put down and then bought an amazing colourful rug which has added a lot of warmth and interest. I can add a picture to show you.

See that looks lovely and all the colours go, because you've got a cream sofa. If you had a grey sofa it wouldn't go.

With a bigger rug sitting under the sofa feet the sofa would look fine with the floor.

I agree with the PP who said it would look better if the sofa was aligned. It would look better either under the window or centred to the gap in between. I also think if you do decide to change the curtains, I would go for full length and a pattern/print and quite full. I also think table lamps add so much warmth to a room. You can also get sofa seat covers on Amazon to add a bit of colour, I had to get some to cover stains on our brown leather sofa and there was a lot of choice, inexpensive too. It's a really lovely room!

Holmfirthrita · 27/01/2023 15:49

Those are great ideas but for now until I get to change and find a rug which set of cushion combos look best out of the ones I have . I can only put one sofa aligned correctly as they are at right angles to wash other and one has to be off centre. Thx

I don't like the yellow or chequered cushions. A different colour would work better. Something brighter, perhaps multicolour? The sofa would look better if aligned with the window and I would get rid of the rug. I don't necessarily think it has to be bigger, but should definitely be of a different colour/pattern. Lastly and for me most importantly the room is lacking plants. The windowsills are completely empty whereas they could have some lovely pots with plants in them, also a nice big plant or two on the floor.

Holmfirthrita · 27/01/2023 16:21

Would a plum cushion or a burnt orange work better ?

I like those cushions much better

Holmfirthrita · 27/01/2023 19:22

Thank you for your comments it looks a bit warmer I think . Do you think I need a throw if so what colour would you have ? Xxxx

Too much grey.
I'd get a wooden curtain pole and neutral curtains.
The rug needs to be bigger and the edge should sit under both sofas

ANewDayDawned · 27/01/2023 19:26

Too much grey. The rug really drowns the room and spoils the effect of the new wood. I'd go for a mixed colour rug, Turkish or Moroccan style, or a a very light colour with some warmth in it

mrsbyers · 27/01/2023 19:28

I think the sofa looks fine with the flooring it’s the wall colour that’s off as too cool toned

Milly717 · 27/01/2023 19:28

The cushions in the last photo look better than the yellow ones for sure.

catfunk · 27/01/2023 19:28

Also - if you get new curtains, I'd consider floor length ones.
Short ones look quite dated now into

catfunk · 27/01/2023 19:29

*imo

PompomDahlia · 27/01/2023 20:48

Agree with pp about floor length curtains. I’d go for some warmer biscuit-y curtains which are more full.

Get rid of the chequered cushion and add in some cream/neutral cushions to go with the new curtains. Add a neutral throw. Then a much bigger rug, maybe kilim style with some rich oranges. A big houseplant too

sevenbyseven · 27/01/2023 21:01

The new cushions look much better! They help to tie everything together more somehow.

Holmfirthrita · 27/01/2023 21:25

Thanks for comments I think I will go with these cushions as they do look better and look for some floor length curtains as suggested. I have 3 bay windows in my room and patterned ones are very difficult to Match unless I go made to measure and can’t go to that cost at moment. It will have to be plain ones but I can get a more patterned rug in the future . The throw for now I will look for a neutral one . Xx

Does anyone think maybe a burnt orange plain rug would go ? Similar to the grey one I have but similar colour to the new cushions??

OP posts:
Holmfirthrita · 27/01/2023 21:37

Also if I had made to measure would that grey check look good? Or stick to plain for my 3 bay windows in ready made ?
thx
