Just wondering what people’s thoughts are on going to USA this summer? Would current political situation put you off ?

It’s not fake news, it just affects an absolutely minuscule proportion of people who live here, let alone those who visit. Day to day, life in America is great. It’s like people who believe the whole of London is a shit hole because of reports of knife crime. Is there knife crime in London? Yes. Is the overwhelming majority of residents or anyone visiting likely to be impacted by it? Almost certainly not. It’s still one of the greatest cities in the world. Just as America is one of the greatest countries.

Doesn’t mean that anyone should go and support the US regime. Do you not watch the news, read about what is happening?

Of course people applied because they want to go to the World Cup. Why else would they apply? My point is there is going to be a lot of tourism in the States this year much to the horror of the hysterics on this thread, who want to see people stop visiting one of the greatest countries in the world. Funny how they’re not jumping up and down about tourism in Turkey or the Middle East or countries where there is far greater suffering than in the US. Good luck boycotting goods made in the US, cancelling Amazon, Netflix, Apple TV, Disney+, stopping using Facebook and Instagram, and all the rest of it. Best of luck.

Those of us living north of the border are boycotting the US - both in travel and by not buying US products (food from the US is so poor compared to what we have anyway).

Air travel from Canada to the US dropped nearly 24%, while car travel fell more than 30% when compared to the same period last year, according to data released this week by Canada's statistics office.

Nope not me …I’m going to Canada instead

Thank you - we’re seeing an increase in visitors rejecting the US and coming to us instead. Where in Canada are you visiting? We live in Montreal - a beautiful city 🇨🇦

trustedadult · 27/01/2026 05:53

No. Way.

rockstarshoes · 27/01/2026 08:01

i’m not giving Trump my money! Was supposed to be going to Vegas for a long weekend but have changed our plans!

Artid · 27/01/2026 10:36

Initially we had three trips planned.
Work in Boston
Work in Chicago then a tour around Detroit area
Road trip taking in an event, flying via Minneapolis.

Only the work in Boston is happening now. We were a bit wait and see about the other trips but very keen.
I love the Minnesota nice people. Such good memories of previous trips.

StrikeForever · 27/01/2026 12:54

@Crushed23 ”one of the greatest countries in the world” 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣

I beg to differ. It’s a breathtaking country. I try to do a road trip out west every year and it’s always the highlight of my year. I’ve hosted lots of friends and family since moving here and there’s plenty more who plan to visit. The reality of actually being in the States bears absolutely no resemblance to sensationalist news reporting overseas for 99.9% of the population.

Yes, there are many lovely places in the US, especially the national parks are beautiful, but so is Syria. Beautiful nature does not make make a country one of the greatest countries in the world.

Where do you live @Crushed23 ?
I spent time on east and west coasts last year and I was shocked by my experience.

I was always a big fan of the US but for various reasons I hadn’t been in 10 years. The decline was shocking. Regardless of Trump, it was a sad place

NorthernStar96 · 27/01/2026 18:31

@Emilyinspacewhere did you visit on the East and West coast you were disappointed in ?

OhDear111 · 28/01/2026 09:49

@StrikeForever Are we allowed to travel to Syria!?

I agree with @Crushed23 It’s fantastic. People don’t always choose wisely about where to visit. Generally looking for superficial delights and not much depth. Hence liking Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco. The USA is so much more than the obvious.

We have never been disappointed with national parks and make a point of travelling along scenic roads. Many of these are spectacular. All American roads and scenic byways are brilliant and we’ve driven along quite a few. Yet, I bet most people posting have never heard of them.

The museums about history, culture and arts in the USA are amazing. (Lots of Faberge (my favourite!) in Richmond arts museum, Virginia though). We’ve seen superb museums in cities and smaller towns in lots of states. Just recently we’ve seen superb bronzes, Native American beadwork and recreations of living in the “wild” west in a museum complex in Wyoming and it was very very good. Absorbing. Brits tend not to adventure anywhere much and stick to Florida, California and a handful of cities. We thought Chicago was amazing for example but it’s never mentioned on MN.

Trump isn’t going to stop me travelling! Still lots to see.

All it takes is for the triumph of evil is for good wo(men) to do nothing.

Whilst I wouldn’t say anything to them because it’s rude I would judge friends and family who choose to go to the US on holiday at the moment,

Sitting at home, scrolling Facebook on your iPhone with Netflix on in the background, waiting for the Amazon delivery. Kids dressed head to toe in Nike and sipping on a Pepsi. Thinking about jumping in the Ford and grabbing a Burger King. Telling the husband, just in from a run he tracked on the Garmin, “Sandra and Bob have put photos on from their NYC trip, not being rude but how could they?”

Fucking ridiculous 🤣

NorthernStar96 · 28/01/2026 11:52

@OhDear111- couldn't agree more.

We're off to Colorado, Wyoming, Montana and Oregon in September - national parks, staying in small towns, and driving from place to place are the best part of the US for us.

StrikeForever · 28/01/2026 15:23

@OhDear111 quote “are we allowed to travel to Syria”?
Are you being deliberately obtuse?

oustedbymymate · 28/01/2026 15:29

I will not be taking my children to the US. I’m horrified by what is happening there at the minute. I did travel the US 15 years ago and loved it but now I feel it’s too risky

Wow - I'm surprised. I see you on lots of threads re law and HE under this name and your previous name. I thought you would have different views on this.

As to the rest of it - nobody is talking about whether the US is a great place to visit so the sales pitch is wasted. We are talking about the politics and the morals of it. Anyone who is going on holiday to the US needs to think about who they are supporting in doing so.

Speak for yourself. My life isn't like that. I've made deliberate choices to move away from US goods and services as much as I can.

Yeah right. Easy to say on here but walking around and seeing how people are in the UK generally it’s very very unlikely you are telling the truth.

If you were genuinely taking such an active stance you’d have no problem letting others know. But whatever, it’s MN. You’re allowed to trll
lies 🤣

I visited Seattle 18 months ago and it was horrendous. Downtown was full of homeless people on drugs and felt really horrible and unsafe. In fact, much less safe than any of the middle-income countries I've visited.

NorthernStar96 · 28/01/2026 16:16

@JoanOgdencan you give some examples of what you considered middle income countries?

And yes, downtown in a lot of the big US cities is hit by those types of social issues - San Francisco has been suffering for over a decade now.

But, there's a whole lot more places to go and things to see in the US than their big cities

Phial · 28/01/2026 16:18

It's a no from me as well. I was going to visit a friend in DC but I'm going to wait til 2027 at least and see how the land lies. Maybe we could meet in Canada instead!

People living there and visiting are lucky not to notice the upturn in drugs in major cities.
This wouldn't make it a no go for me, but I would not want to support the current president in any way so I'll wait til he's gone.

OhDear111 · 28/01/2026 16:46

@Ciri I support people running small holiday businesses. As I do in the uk. I deplore the politics in the USA and do here. However, like many I’ve visited Russia and China. Where do you draw the line and cross a country off? Everyone who talked to us in the USA recently was ashamed of the USA. If we get on our high horses and don’t speak to USA citizens there, how are we supporting the decent people of the USA?

But my problem is I do visit Minneapolis, I do go to North and South Dakota and not the normal fly in fly out destinations although I'm sure you've heard of Fargo.
Part of my self imposed ban is because I don't want to embarrass the people in the diners, at the events, in the cities that I have visited. They don't need my tourist dollar, I'm a bonus not a necessity in Wisconsin.
The amazing scenery, pioneer villages and large fibre glass statues will hopefully still be there in a few years time. By using my English white privilege to fly into Minneapolis now feels insulting to the communities who welcome me by legitimising the current Republican Administration.

Please think twice everyone before going. Plenty to see elsewhere and the joy of revisiting the US if it finds it's way back will be so much stronger than if it never stopped you going.
