People who can’t do simple holidays

How would you describe someone who only really seems to go on hard to organise holidays? Like we like going to Dubai or Mallorca, nice and easy, one flight and done. Or if we go further afield then we do a package with Tui to Cancun or Dominican, usually AI.

But I have colleagues who seem to go on really whacky or trips that sound like a pain. They’d go to Greece and then get a ferry to some place no one has ever heard of. Or if they went to the Caribbean then they’d pick somewhere that needs two flights and a ferry to get to. Never do AI or something easy and relaxing but self cater and drive around.

OP posts:

We have always travelled independently, booked everything ourselves from flights to rental cars to hotels to restaurants and trips. Why would this be whacky? We don't like beach holidays, laying on a stretcher next to a pool and all-in hotels with generic buffets. What we like to do is travel to see places, experience different countries, often making a round trip over two weeks or so, staying in different places. Different restaurant every day. The difference with you is that we don 't make fun of people who make other choices than ours.

To be fair, if I didn’t have a primary age child and a husband who is potentially nearing end of life, I would do these things. I suspect when my DS is a teen, his dad won’t be around any longer - either long dead or in long term care - and I will encourage him to try this type of travelling with me so he can get as many experiences as possible. And I think that’s the point - they’re not just holidays but real experiences.

Making the point that the OP was ‘sneery’ about their colleagues’ holidays. I was merely proving a point. Clearly worked.

Well yes, you proved it by equally sneery
Well-done

Some people enjoy the buzz of holidays that involve more than a journey “ A to B”. Absolutely nothing wrong with that - each to their own and all that. What suits one doesn’t necessarily suit another, and it’s a good thing we’re all different, and enjoy varied holiday experiences.

paddlinglikecrazy · 18/01/2025 18:45

We always book flights & hotels separately ourselves. Don’t remember the last time we booked a package hol.
we love the canaries or Dubai, but will stay in a couple of different places when there. We equally love a road trip, seeing more of a country over a couple of weeks. We love a city break too.
I’d still say our hols were fairly normal just no AI or package.

countrygirl99 · 18/01/2025 18:46

If we all wanted the same holiday one place would be very crowded so it's a good job we all like different things.

Meltdown247 · 18/01/2025 18:52

This post is EXACTLY why I have t done an AI in decades! Mind your own business OP you’d hate my type of holiday and I don’t labelling by you.

Xcxlxn · 18/01/2025 18:55

describe them as people who like to travel rather than people who holiday

Those people like travelling. You like holidays.

This!

Wouldn't go to Dubai if you paid me. Why do you need a word for people that like a different experience to you?

You sound like the hard work, not their holidays!

Someone else's holiday literally wouldn't even be on my radar. Couldn't give a fig what anyone else does with their spare time

Duechristmas · 18/01/2025 19:04

Package holidays bore me and I find the idea of being stuck in one place stressful. I wouldn't judge your choices and wouldn't expect you to judge mine.

How the fuck can a package holiday bore you? What do.you.imagine a package holiday is?

Hilarious how people can think themselves ai superior without having the first clue what they are talking about.

LaDamaDeElche · 18/01/2025 19:03

Lol, not that. Meaningless distinction, just pure snobbery

Wow, maybe you need to get out more.
Being in the same place with the same restaurants and the same room, the same pool and the same people is dull for me. I'm glad it's something you enjoy but it isn't for me. Imagine if we were all the same, those ten days by the pool would cost you even more.

Sassybooklover · 18/01/2025 19:21

All Inclusive, wouldn't be my type of holiday. I like eating local food, in local restaurants. Island hopping in Greece would be my type of holiday. Equally, I like to sit around the pool or on the beach but I like to explore the country I am visiting too. Everyone is different, and there is no 'right' or 'wrong' holiday, it's down to personal choice.

Planning holidays is my hobby, I really enjoy it - love going somewhere different (I don't mean in a snobby way of "different to where my friends go", literally a change of scenery), love wandering around new places and I don't cope with hot weather well so a lot of the classic destinations aren't fun for me. I'm often able to save a lot by finding random locations and obscure ways of getting around.
I don't judge people who prefer a package beach holiday.
Words to describe it: you could say people who prefer active holidays?!

Planning is part of the fun!

Lyraloo · 18/01/2025 19:25

What on earth do other peoples holidays have to do with you? If you’re happy with your run of the mill package holidays, great! But some of us want a bit more time off the beaten tourist track. It’s certainly isn’t unreasonable of us, but it definitely is of you to think you’re right.

LaDamaDeElche · 18/01/2025 19:25

Hipalong · 18/01/2025 19:14

Yes, still this lol. Travelling is to experience the culture of a country, visit places outside the usual tourist traps, be spontaneous, and mingle with the locals. This is a completely different thing to staying in an AI hotel. I like both btw, actually as I get older and more tired I probably lean towards a relaxing AI trip with a bit of sightseeing, so no judgement or snobbery from me.

Lol. As if you don't think you're better for being a traveller instead of a tourist (when you're still.just a tourist)

midgetastic · 18/01/2025 19:30

@Hipalong assumes the other person thinks themselves better with no evidence - but really you are making some huge leaps of imagination

It's a type of judgement / snobbery "oh they must be looking down on me because they liked something different "

Katypp · 18/01/2025 19:30

I see this thread is still going strong. MNetters do love to feel superior.
Has anyone admitted enjoying a package holiday yet? 🍿

Lyraloo · 18/01/2025 19:31

Do you take your own teabags and complain there’s too many foreigners or no chips?I think the question is, what do those of us who like adventure call you? Boring springs to mind!

What do you like about Dubai for a holiday? I lived there for a while and found it spectacularly uninteresting and charmless. It was a great base to travel from, but that was all.

midgetastic · 18/01/2025 19:32

Yes but why do people who like package holidays think themselves superior? That's what I don't get - there does seem to be a correlation but what causes it ?
