People who can’t do simple holidays

How would you describe someone who only really seems to go on hard to organise holidays? Like we like going to Dubai or Mallorca, nice and easy, one flight and done. Or if we go further afield then we do a package with Tui to Cancun or Dominican, usually AI.

But I have colleagues who seem to go on really whacky or trips that sound like a pain. They’d go to Greece and then get a ferry to some place no one has ever heard of. Or if they went to the Caribbean then they’d pick somewhere that needs two flights and a ferry to get to. Never do AI or something easy and relaxing but self cater and drive around.

Love easy AI holidays, love the multi destination trips too, it's a mix of relaxing holidays and exploring holidays.
This summer we have a big road trip to Oregon and Washington, lots of different stops and i can't wait, did California in 2023, have done Canada, New Zealand and Hawaii, all get out and explore holidays, have the best memories from these trips and saw stunning places.
Very grateful my 8yr old loves travelling too and these types of holidays.
Each to the their own, your colleagues trips sound amazing.

Those people like travelling. You like holidays.

Exactly this

Maddy70 · 17/01/2025 14:27

I get super bored if I'm trapped in a hotel, I like to have lots of variety in my holiday

Katypp · 17/01/2025 14:27

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 17/01/2025 14:19

Why does she need a word to describe those people?

Surely it's subjective, anyway? For some people the description would be "adventurous traveller" or "not boring"; for others (like the OP?) it would probably be "smug" or "superior".

LOL because that's the question she asked. You asked me what the question was, I told you.
The OP did not ask for pages of responses telling her how awful her holidays sound, even if it makes the posters feel superior about their choices.

Winterskyfall · 17/01/2025 14:33

What a strange post. I personally would never choose to visit Dubai, I had an offer of free accommodation with a friend that lived there for over a decade and never visited because I don't like to support countries with questionable human rights.

Your holidays sound like you skip the real country and spend a week by an interchangeable pool / sea and yet you have the cheek to judge others who want more. I get wanting an easy holiday to relax and unwind somewhere warm and I've sometimes needed those too, but I don't get judging others for having the desire to experience something more interesting.

I've edited your question so you can respond to how you would describe yourself. How would you describe someone who only really seems to go on dull interchangeable package holidays, who is too lazy to do self catering or drive themselves yet judges those who aren't?

Your type of holiday sounds completely uninspiring, sorry

Dubai and Cancun sound like my idea of hell - as does all inclusive. I don't want to be shut in the equivalent of a gated community or trapse around shopping malls. I like to explore local eateries, historic/archaeological sites, art galleries and the like. I actively enjoy getting boats and trains, it's a great way to meet people and see more of the country you're visiting. Different strokes for different folks.

You realise that you can do all these things and stay in an AI hotel right??

Personally I'd do 6 holidays a year, a mix of adventuring and also fly and flop. They all have their merits.

Girasoli · 17/01/2025 14:37

We are a bit like that (take odd routes and multi stops)...its mainly because we want to visit relatives but also see something new while we are abroad...so we need to get extra trains and buses to my relatives little village, and then get them again to somewhere more touristy.

Also flights are expensive and I feel guilty about my carbon footprint. To get across Europe you can often do it via combination of train and coach.

I wouldn't judge anyone that chooses a straightforward AI holiday though. I'd try one of I had more money and didnt have cousins etc in Italy to visit.

RockingBaby889 · 17/01/2025 14:38

I like to keep busy and plan the holiday. Planning is part of the fun for me. And keeping busy gets my mind off things I don't want to sit on a sun lounger and think of the 300 emails a day that I will have to catch up on at work.

Of course you could, but you’d be paying the premium for an AI hotel (to include all food and entertainment etc) then not using a large proportion of it as you’re out and about, so it wouldn’t make much sense to do so unless you had an exceptionally cheap AI deal.

TrainCoffee · 17/01/2025 14:43

Because they don’t want to be stuck on an identikit resort with unimaginative people like you.

devilspawn · 17/01/2025 14:53

I don't like to drive around or self-cater, but I do like complicated holidays. I can't imagine anything worse than Wall-E set in the summer, with people fighting over towels and being told what times they're allowed to eat and sunbathing with an entire hotel block looming over you like Shameless in the sun.

Ice25 · 17/01/2025 14:56

Some people enjoy adventure, travel and exploring. Others like to chill on the beach, by the pool etc with minimal hassle. Some do both. I guess it’s whether people want to “travel” or have a “holiday”. I prefer to go on adventures and explore the world off the beaten track. I wouldn’t go to Dubai or Mallorca as I just don’t fancy it.

ginasevern · 17/01/2025 14:57

My understanding is that all meals, along with some booze and snacks, is included in an AI holiday. So whilst I do realise that you can go out and eat somewhere different every day (which is my preference) wouldn't it be rather pointless to book all inclusive?

Whatsitreallylike · 17/01/2025 14:59

AI holidays are boring. Same hotel, same beach, same food… It’s boring. Some people like to explore, experience new things, see the world and experience a new culture and that’s where they find their enjoyment. You can holiday to relax or you can holiday to experience something new… you do you.

bouncydog · 17/01/2025 15:01

We just get the ferry to France and decide where we are going when we get there! We put clothes etc in the car and off we go. Sometimes we go as far as Southern Spain, other times we stay in France. Sometimes we go visit family in Ireland on the ferry between France and Ireland. We no longer have much in the way of work commitments so do as we please! In our 60’s and have been holidaying this way for the past 10 years or so - see things we might have missed and if we don’t like somewhere we just move on. I have no desire to go on an AI holiday and see the same people every day nor eat the same food for 2 weeks. Was also put off on a family package holiday to Majorca several years ago where they offered AI. We witnessed food being dropped onto a dirty floor in the kitchen and then being put back on the trays to go out to the dining room! Luckily we were on a self catering options!

fivecolourblanket · 17/01/2025 15:01

Why on earth do you pick an AI holiday in Dubai, when there are so many great world class places to eat?

battairzeedurgzome · 17/01/2025 15:04

I use the term 'fellow travellers'.

BringMeTea · 17/01/2025 15:08

To avoid people like you in your AI Dubai hellscape? 🤔

Plastictrees · 17/01/2025 15:10

People just enjoy different things, it’s that simple. I’ve never been on a package holiday, I always preferred booking my own trips and itinerary planning and adventuring, I spent most of my 20’s doing this and it was brilliant. It never felt difficult at the time as it’s just what I did, it also meant I got to discover less touristy routes and locations and it was more culturally enriching than staying in a resort.

Even with young DC we prefer to go off the beaten track and plan our own trips, we always self cater as we find it easier. Occasionally I can see the appeal of an all inclusive break though where I could just do nothing for a week, so never say never!

PeloMom · 17/01/2025 15:11

I think it’s called being adventurous?
i tried AI twice and honestly it’s not for me. I’m more the type to enjoy a trip as you describe as ‘hard work’. That’s why there are different options for different people

Cakeandusername · 17/01/2025 15:12

We are all different. Wouldn’t do Dubai or Cancun. Never been AI.
Packages are usually expensive and rigid eg 7 or 14.
Hotels don’t suit everyone eg 2 adults and an older teen girl only one room/bathroom isn’t nice, whereas a 2 bed apt is much more pleasant.

Loub1987 · 17/01/2025 15:16

I’m jealous of anyone who has any holiday!

I would call them adventurous, lucky, outgoing, competent etc etc.

Currently with two small children my ideal holiday would be an all inclusive by the beach but that will change!

AgathaPanthus · 17/01/2025 15:19

I love travelling. My idea of hell is an AI resort type holiday. I appreciate that some people loves that type of holiday. Each to their own really.
