People who can’t do simple holidays

smerina · 17/01/2025 11:37

How would you describe someone who only really seems to go on hard to organise holidays? Like we like going to Dubai or Mallorca, nice and easy, one flight and done. Or if we go further afield then we do a package with Tui to Cancun or Dominican, usually AI.

But I have colleagues who seem to go on really whacky or trips that sound like a pain. They’d go to Greece and then get a ferry to some place no one has ever heard of. Or if they went to the Caribbean then they’d pick somewhere that needs two flights and a ferry to get to. Never do AI or something easy and relaxing but self cater and drive around.

OP- come out from behind the sofa, it’s safe now there are plenty of sensible people who aren’t sneering at you. I wouldn’t contemplate AI, partly because I am a self confessed snob. I think it’s unkind to look down on people who do AI. I remember a few AI holidays our parents took us to in Tunisia when we were kids, and we had a ball- other kids to play with , large heated swimming swimming pools , lovely grounds, room service etc. However also went on a crappy AI in Tenerife as a teenager so when DH suggested Tenerife AI when kids were small it was a no from me. In the intervening time I’d learnt Spanish, felt confident enough to travel independently to Spain, tastes changed etc.

I’m certainly not looking down on AIs. I am, I will admit, looking down somewhat on someone who simply can’t get her head around people not liking the same kind of holiday they do. Or thinking that they’re simply too thick to book a package and are just bumbling about on ferries?

notatinydancer · 17/01/2025 22:12

I'd describe them as different to you.
I would never want to go on a package or to Dubai.
I like travelling as opposed to you who likes holidays.
I particularly like holidays involving internal flights / ferries / few different hotels.

Pllystyrene · 18/01/2025 09:26

I love the planning 😂 When I decide where we're going I treat it like a part time job, learn all about the location, culture, travel systems etc... We went to Tokyo a couple years ago and I spent a good year learning the language, customs and planning beforehand. Just booked a Disney holiday for later in the year and I've already got a checklist ready. Everyone's different unless their choices directly impact on you I wouldn't worry too much about what other people are doing. I'll add I do have other hobbies, children and a very stressful job but really enjoy having something to look forward too / plan.

Lonely40 · 18/01/2025 10:16

The snobbery in these comments are ridiculous! For goodness sake, what you enjoy spending your money on when travelling doesn't make you a better person than the next. So what, you don't do AI, well big slow clap for you 😆

Lonely40 · 18/01/2025 10:18

Lozzq · 17/01/2025 12:18

Cultured, interesting, go getter, fun. You sound like a Brit abroad. Please stay in your all inclusive and leave the unspoilt places off the beaten track to those that will appreciate.

Hope you don't get a nosebleed from your high horse?

Lonely40 · 18/01/2025 10:19

CienAnosDeSoledad · 17/01/2025 12:26

I'd describe you as pedestrian and boring. Brit abroad. Flopping by the pool and getting wasted in some generic hotel with hundreds of other lobster-red, noisy drunkards around. Wouldn't go if you'd pay me.

Your colleague likes actually travelling, is normal, adventurous and likes exploring places and cultures (the whole point of travelling). Why fly thousands of miles so you can vegg out rooted by a pool, drinking shitty cocktails for a week, not seeing anything? I'd rather just get drunk where I live , would be cheaper (and more fun).

And another! Why are people so nasty about strangers holiday choices?

Because that was exactly what the OP was designed to elicit?

The OP (who you've come in on your shining white horse to protect) literally started this thread to be nasty about the vacation choices of others. Interesting that you apparently have no problem when the criticism is coming from those who like AIs.

Crikeyalmighty · 18/01/2025 10:35

The post was clearly designed to show us all up as a bunch of snobs who don't like package holidays or AIs - as I mentioned below I like both- although package AIs in small doses and not in school holidays. A lot of this too depends on what life stage you are at and if you aren't big drinkers, don't have kids with you and don't go a bundle on buffets then in all honesty an AI will be a bit of a waste of cash

sashh · 18/01/2025 10:44

Other than a weekend in Amsterdam I have never been on a package holiday. The journey is part of holiday.

I also mostly go solo. That's getting harder due to disability.

Some people like the journey, my carer is planning a trip to Japan, he has been before and I think each time it has been with a different airline with a change in a different city.

Some 'hub' airports actually run tours or events for travellers changing planes.

Lonely40 · 18/01/2025 11:01

GCAcademic · 18/01/2025 10:20

No, is that how you read it? I thought it's a bit weird to try to put people in categories based on holiday preference, but I didn't read it as looking down her nose at anyone. Yet it took all of 5 seconds for the holiday snob brigade to come out in full force. Seriously the amount of "Brits abroad", "I prefer authentic" posts is absurd.

Plastictrees · 18/01/2025 11:05

@Lonely40 The OP’s post was designed to elicit these sort of polarising responses.

Longma · 18/01/2025 11:11

Aren't they just people that like holidays they organise themselves?
So they Ed a name?

There is no real wrong or right way to have a holiday.
You just do what suits you at the time.
We have done both types and probably plenty in between.

Not sure what the issue is

Exactly this. The OP knew what she was doing! Throwing Dubai in there was a particularly genius move.

We were only there a few days @TeenLifeMum , so all the specialised restaurants were booked up.

Sounds like you didn't make the best choice perhaps.
Most will have a number of a la carte restaurants which don't always need booking well in advance.

We do all manner of holiday types but never had this issue.

On the odd times we go AI we never just stay in the hotel. We explore the area too. So usually no time to get bored

Apparently there are companies that can help, you organise themselves.

Or you could try it yourself - set a start and end and go for it.
I'd like the variety but I'd need to up my budget - I don't want lengthy bus trips or dodgy accommodation these days!

AI holidays and package deals are not for me. Can’t think of anything worse. Did it once, never again. And Dubai is not for me for many reasons… But I wouldn’t try to work out a collective noun for people who do like these sort of trips!

It’s none of your business what people do in their vacation time. Someone I used to work with never went on conventional holidays but would go anywhere in the world to watch a concert. She’d follow particular musicians and travel to see them. I thought that was actually really inspired.

Think you need to worry less about other peoples’ holidays. It’s not your business.

SlowestHorse · 18/01/2025 17:48

Why on earth is this any of your business?

Fanofbrianbilston · 18/01/2025 18:08

Will never understand how a young Islamophobic demographic is obsessed with Dubai and AE even if the hols are AI. They come home and then are waving England flags at hotels they think have Muslims living in them.

So inane. As if ALL package deals and AI are the same. That's like saying food isn't for me, I tried one meal once and I didn't like it.

Plenty of people go to Greece to islands maybe you have never heard of but others have. I love those types of holidays. You see a lot more culture in those holidays than the type you describe you go on. But each to their own.

We visited over 40 Greek islands on island hopping holidays. They were the best holidays I ever had with my late husband. Also with AI you would never get to experience a Greek taverna, the atmosphere, impromptu dancing and all the wonderful food!

Do people think AI means they chain you to a sunbed for ten days?
You can stay AI and go to a fucking taverna, for Christ's sake.

Making the point that the OP was ‘sneery’ about their colleagues’ holidays. I was merely proving a point. Clearly worked.

Jumpers4goalposts · 18/01/2025 18:22

You’re describing me lol… I love an adventure rather than a packaged holiday.
