People who can’t do simple holidays

How would you describe someone who only really seems to go on hard to organise holidays? Like we like going to Dubai or Mallorca, nice and easy, one flight and done. Or if we go further afield then we do a package with Tui to Cancun or Dominican, usually AI.

But I have colleagues who seem to go on really whacky or trips that sound like a pain. They’d go to Greece and then get a ferry to some place no one has ever heard of. Or if they went to the Caribbean then they’d pick somewhere that needs two flights and a ferry to get to. Never do AI or something easy and relaxing but self cater and drive around.

I wouldn´t go to Dubai ever, and as for AI hols, pfff. I would only go AI in a place where you would be raped and murdered if you set a foot outside the resort. And I wouldn´t go to a place like that anyway. What´s the point of travelling to a place and not exploring it? I guess it´s horses for courses.

Those people like travelling. You like holidays.

Yes - it is definitely travelling vs holidays.I am definitely a holidayer.

I hate packing. Getting to the airport is a hassle. Waiting at the airport is annoying. Flying is boring. Travelling from the airport to the wherever I want to go is miserable.

But I do all these things because I love actually being on holiday.

If only I could apparate. My life would be amazing!

Sometimes the journey is part of the holiday?

MissAmbrosia · 17/01/2025 12:05

Like me. I don't do AI or even package holidays and love e.g. long train journeys with different stops as it's part of the trip. And we go pretty much always s/c as I don't want to have to get dressed to go to breakfast / have a glass of wine, and love a local market. I have covered most of mainland Europe in said fashion over the years and still have a bucket list.

OhBling · 17/01/2025 12:05

I agree with all the other posters who say everyone is different and want different things from a holiday. And I'd add that I think a lot o fpeople don't like "simnple" or all inclusive because it's often also generic and very crowded. Certainly, that was me and would still be if it wasn't for the below points re time and money....

I also agree with @Chewbecca - when I was younger, the act of planning and organising and researchign the holiday, even with the crazy connections or out of the way hotels, was part of the fun. I have less time and money now so really I just want something a bit simpler and I'm ore focused on value for money plus I'm too busy to spend days planning a trip but there was n odoubt that was part of the fun for me.

DaDaDoDaiDa · 17/01/2025 12:06

For some, the planning his half the fun.

(I am reminded of the Viz top tip - "Since planning a holiday is half the fun, save money and have the same fun by staying at home and planning two holidays")

PotaytoPotahhto · 17/01/2025 12:07

Is this meant to be a bitching thread of people who have different tastes to you?

Why do they make you feel so small about your holiday choices that you feel the need to post about them?

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 17/01/2025 12:08

I do think it comes down to “relax” vs “do stuff” and “travel to arrive” vs “enjoy the travel”.

GCAcademic · 17/01/2025 12:08

Interested in culture rather than hotels?

RobinHood19 · 17/01/2025 12:09

I’d actually find it really hard myself (and even “whacky”) to spend 1 or 2 weeks at the same location, even more so if it’s a hotel where lots of other people are staying for a week or two.

I sit between the same 4 walls at home on a daily basis, when I leave to visit somewhere else I want to do that, visit. I am not interested in staying in the same place more than a few days - even somewhere far like Canada or Australia I’d want to see a few different places and attractions throughout my time there. Eating at a hotel buffet or seeing one particular city / town in a country, is not experiencing the culture. Experiencing the culture and discovering a new country means actually exploring it.

I’m not saying you can’t just go to 1 place on holiday, but I can do with European cities or places that I only go to for a shorter amount of time. I’d feel it a waste going to Mexico or Thailand and staying the whole time in the same place - even with the odd day trip in, I wouldn’t be seeing as much as I could on my own.

You enjoy your type of holiday, others enjoy theirs. Also, 2 flights and a ferry isn’t complicated. I regularly do more transfers than that to travel between 2 EU cities - not everywhere is as well connected as the Stansted to Mallorca route.

Starlight1984 · 17/01/2025 12:10

😂This has got to be a wind up. Surely you're not that wet behind the ears that you're only just coming across people in life who enjoy different things to you?!

Me and DH are the type of people you describe. The "wacky" ones 😂

We do it because we absolutely hate anywhere generic, tourist driven and basically full of people who don't want any experience of another country or culture.

We will fly to another country, hire a car and drive (and get ferries) to places that are quiet, off the beaten track and have more locals than tourists. We eat in small local restaurants, shop in the little backstreet shops, and try to get involved in the culture and daily life (going to markets, to church, wandering the streets and chatting to people...)

We do this as we actually want to experience the world.

Not just lie by a swimming pool in a generic, all inclusive hotel, where you could be anywhere in the world, surrounded by Brits, gagging for their Full English in the morning and a load of booze at night.

Each to their own though 😃

And to be honest, because of people like you who enjoy Dubai and places that are "easy" (i.e. Massively catering for Brits abroad so you don't have to make any effort whatsoever), it contains you all to specific areas and leaves the rest of the world free for us "wacky" ones 😜

EmmaStone · 17/01/2025 12:10

We never really did package holidays growing up, so they're not my normal, and I haven't really done any as an adult. I like the freedom to explore where I'm travelling, so will usually hire a car (or one year we did inter-railing across 7 cities in Europe), and it's rare that we'd stay in one place on a holiday (unless a short break). We tend to stay in a mix of AirBNBs and hotels, I get fed up with eating food out all the time, and like to be able to have a mix of simpler food at home (plus I love a foreign supermarket / market), as well as meals out.

I guess they take more orgnaisation, but I have a pathological problem with going somewhere and not seeing everything I wanted to, some might call it FOMO!

Clearinguptheclutter · 17/01/2025 12:11

Never do AI or something easy and relaxing but self cater and drive around.

this is me. I suppose the whole package holiday- particularly the AI aspect but also the fly and flop mentality- doesn’t appeal at all. I didn’t think that made me particularly unique.

Overtheatlantic · 17/01/2025 12:11

Why so many judgemental threads this morning?

EmmaMaria · 17/01/2025 12:13

I would describe them as "fun". I would describe you as "really judgemental, middle of the road and boring".

Rainyaprilmonday · 17/01/2025 12:13

Sounds like me!
Off in a couple of weeks and will be travelling to 3 countries in central America for 3 weeks. Mountains, jungles, tropical islands, Mayan ruins, historic cities...cant wait! You couldn't pay me to go to Dubai (well. you could - Id never turn down a free holiday)

Oh and to us “easy and relaxing” IS self catering, because my family have awkward dietary requirements. It’s far easier for us to have self catering facilities and occasionally eat out than be tied to restaurants. Surely that can’t be difficult to understand.

Sounds fab

Brokeinto · 17/01/2025 12:17

Dubai and AI?? Wouldn't catch me going either for a million £. Your holidays sound incredible boring and predictable to me. Give me an adventure involving a boat and a river any day..

Perfect for me too! Which countries are you going to?

Lozzq · 17/01/2025 12:18

Cultured, interesting, go getter, fun. You sound like a Brit abroad. Please stay in your all inclusive and leave the unspoilt places off the beaten track to those that will appreciate.

Bloatedhelp · 17/01/2025 12:18

I’m one of ‘those people’.

I don’t like the beach or the pool as I get bored and burn. AI is wasted on me as if I overeat (inevitable for me) then I’m so bloated and uncomfortable.

I like sightseeing and being on the move. That’s all there is to it really.

This year we are hiring a motor home and driving around Iceland. Last year we spent two weeks interrailing around Austria, Switzerland and Italy. Just like to hop about and see places while I have the energy. I also like street food and visiting cafes or restaurants that the locals enjoy. I like pretty much all food so I’m not restricted.

I’d always choose a city break over anything though! I could spend all day in a museum. This is hell for some people and although I enjoy this, I can understand why some people don’t.

My brother has a full on life with a manual job and wants to kick back on the beach with his annual leave. That’s understandable! People can holiday however they please.

El Salvador, Guatemala and Belize. If only I had longer, but sadly will just be a glimpse of each.

FeralNun · 17/01/2025 12:20

Amazing. It surely cannot be news to you that people like different things? And that the millions of people in the world that like different things to you are not ‘wrong’ because you are ‘right’?

I mean - come on!
