People who can’t do simple holidays

How would you describe someone who only really seems to go on hard to organise holidays? Like we like going to Dubai or Mallorca, nice and easy, one flight and done. Or if we go further afield then we do a package with Tui to Cancun or Dominican, usually AI.

But I have colleagues who seem to go on really whacky or trips that sound like a pain. They’d go to Greece and then get a ferry to some place no one has ever heard of. Or if they went to the Caribbean then they’d pick somewhere that needs two flights and a ferry to get to. Never do AI or something easy and relaxing but self cater and drive around.

Because they'd rather not go on hols at all than have to go ai or TUI or to Dubai. So common 😝

Can you see why you were slated?

I doubt the op does!

Not sure why someone who doesn’t do “simple package holidays” needs to be described in any way, people like different things and that should suffice/doesn’t need picking apart,

The fact it was even a thread starter is a bit 🤔…. Wouldn’t even enter my mind to think or wonder about how and where other people holiday, my own concern is to travel as much as I can, living like a local ( which is now meaning solo travel at times) before I kick the bucket, lol

I've never been to Dubai and I don't do package holidays.... the difference is I'm under no illusion that I'm somehow better than those that do, unlike so many arseholes on here.

You're not superior. You're not a better person. You're not more interesting and you're not more cultured and you're not a traveller. You're just another twatty tourist, booking your own flights and patronising the locals doesn't change anything.

I come from a developing country (on one side of my family) and this is wrong, at least as far as my country is concerned - tourists who avoid all inclusive holidays make a huge contribution to the local economy by staying at all different kinds of locally owned accommodation, eating out at local restaurants and buying goods from local shops.

Do you take your own teabags and complain there’s too many foreigners or no chips?I think the question is, what do those of us who like adventure call you? Boring springs to mind!

Actually, I do always take my own teabags on our "complicated" holidays! Love eating local food, but at the same time really miss a cup of english breakfast tea and in many places it is hard to find. Surely we are not the only ones?!

Trekkers. They enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

I always take my own teabags when I travel - ginger tea, in my first aid kit for nausea, ever since getting unwell while travelling in Uzbekistan.

I'm a Teabag Taker too, ever since a disappointing experience with a Lipton's in Maui 😂

If you ever fancy a proper cup of tea while away, you have to Be Prepared, imo.

I'm the first to find the weirdest thing on a menu on holiday and order it, but I probably would put a dozen tea bags in my case. I'm mostly a coffee drinker and any local brand is usually fine. Tea and crisps outside of Ireland usually disappoint. I will try the local stuff though!

This year I booked a package and honestly don't think I saved a huge deal compared to my usual DIY holiday.

One thing I will never do is holiday with family other than the person I married or birthed. I'll happily do a weekend city break with DM and siblings, but I've tried it a few times and hated the big group holidays with aunties uncles and cousins.

Must remember teabags in future!
One of my best holidays was taking 3 DC to a tiny, car-free island in Croatia. Plane, then a coach, then a ferry...The DC struck up a friendship with some random on the ferry and got invited to beach parties run by the locals :) Stayed in a cheap but immaculately clean guesthouse that I booked on Airbnb a stone's throw from the beach. We had a lovely time exploring the island, swimming in crystal clear waters, eating in different restaurants. My older DC love independent travel now as they've got the confidence to explore :)

I am also a tea bag taker. Love adventurous holidays, will try any food but the tea's wrong everywhere except Ireland.

Adventurous?

This!

JustMeAndTheFish · 27/01/2025 17:25

I’d describe them as being similar to me. I don’t book packages, don’t understand why people do AI (unless picky children are involved) and spend a long time planning my trips..which are usually solo. And I’ve been to nearly all the Emirates; most are much more interesting than Dubai.

Nantescalling · 29/01/2025 12:07

To each his own!

CharlotteCChapel · 29/01/2025 12:25

Since our kids grew up we've been AI once but that was for a sporting event and it was the hotel offered.

We have done packages as they include transfers but that still includes Greek islands that needed a ferry to.

I'm happy on a city break as most cities are interesting and have culture. For instance off to Rome next week, I'm a roman history geek so can't wait, also taking in a sporting event.

Wherever we go we'll go off the beaten track, or stay in less popular areas. For instance when we were in Pefkos on Rhodes we caught the bus away from Lindos and found a superb taverna that had fresh fish, as in it came off the boat whilst we had a drink, for really cheap prices. The wine came from the owner's parents vineyard.

I would be so bored sitting around a pool doing nothing for days on end.
