Yes it does feel a bit like that. But it also feels to me like STEM students are starting to become a bit two a penny and there aren't the jobs for them. DH's employer (civils consultancy) have drastically cut their graduate programme.

I encouraged my DD to carry on with a language at uni joint with a humanity/social science because I think that whilst the UK won't value her, plenty of countries will. If there are far fewer humanity/language graduates out there, it makes her that little bit more different. And the year abroad will give her a whole new view of the world.

My DD's had to switch from a joint honours with language to single honours without as illness meant she couldn't do the year abroad.

But I'm really hoping she'll reapply to the British Council scheme next year - maybe a language in itself isn't as useful as it once was but showing you've done the hard work of acquiring one ought to have a value.

Good luck to your DD HPFA, if I recall correctly I think she's at Aber and we were on the same thread last year.

My DD also wants to go the British Council route, every summer for the last few years she's gone and volunteered at her old school so is hoping that that will help with her application (no idea what that entails at this point!).

I'll be sad and worried when she goes but I think the responsibility of working and living in another country will be fantastic for her.

Yes, I think you are right and data does show that women in particular are encouraged to do sciences (more often choosing biological sciences) and end up in lower paid and sometimes institutionally misogynistic jobs ( the study I saw mentioned lab work as low paid and engineering as institutionally sexist) - and /or teaching. (nowt wrong with that...)

Yes, although ultimately we may end up with a shortage of properly qualified teachers if English continues to decline... it's already beginning to bite.

I think languages are very important .
It is great that you encouraged your dd to continue with a language .
All three of my dc speak a European language . I got them language tutors when they were in primary scholl

My dd2 ( Economics graduate ) got a job in an investment bank. The person who interviewed her was impressed with the fact that she could speak Spanish fluently. He said that British people were generally terrible at learning languages
DD2 believes that the fact that she spoke another language was part of the reason she got a job in a very competitive field

She has been even told that she would get the opportunity to work in Latin America

She is at Aber -well-remembered!

The slightly annoying thing is she's finally got on medication for her arthritis and might conceivably have been able to go after all! But she had to make a decision at a time when she was barely mobile.

The BC scheme I think isn't filled for some of the languages now so hopefully your DD will get a place without too much trouble.

Would someone mind linking to the site where you are seeing all the clearing places please? I looked on the UCAS clearing page and there are so many coming up (for music) I'm wondering whether it's not up to date or I'm doing something wrong.

Unfortunately you probably have to check the unis individual pages.

The UCAS pages don't show the clearing grades and might not update quickly enough.

I agree the Uni websites are the place to look. UCAS site was useless when ds went through clearing 3 years ago

Look on individual uni websites. If you put in uni name and clearing. If you put grades and course on here people may be able to help.

@ICantStomachWhelks that's a good idea. Ds went through clearing 3 years ago and I had surruptiously had a look at clearing the night before. He was in such a state after missing his firm and insurance that I had to insist at 8.30 when we got home that he started the phone calls to unis. It was probably the last thing he wanted to do but I knew acting quickly was the best approach. He got a good offer straightaway that he was happy with and has had amazing time, got a 1st and starts a great job soon. He has said he is glad he missed both offers as it has all worked out really well.

Anyone with predictions around the BBC mark but who values ranking positions should have a "trade-up" plan. And those with higher predictions should have a "disappointment plan".

Honestly it’s such a helpful thing to do. There’s no guarantees but I watched clearing year before and those same unis have been in clearing for similar lower grades 23/24/25/26 for subject I watched.
I was initially concerned she didn’t have a lower grade offer as insurance but having watched I knew where was a good bet if a B type offer was needed. It wasn’t needed to settled my nerves.

DC going into year 13 and currently on B/C and are some good mid tier option for Econ with that. Not much to trade up to via clearing. Makes me think apply high wirh knowledge clearing can be a back up

At the moment the idea of an insurance being "somewhere you're certain to get into" is probably out of date.

So long as you've done your research and have a Clearing back up plan ready to go you might as well keep your firm and insurance as "two places I really, really like" even if they both want really high grades.

DD applied through clearing a couple of years ago (as a post A level student) and I realised afterwards that I'd given her all the wrong advice through believing the "official" grade requirements. Luckily she ended up in a place that was right for her but it could easily not have happened.

So I guess I'm doing my bit to make sure no-one else does the same - I feel like the student predicted BCC who loves a course at Liverpool Uni should know that there is a chance of getting on that course even if they wouldn't get an offer first time round.

I would agree that for almost all courses that is correct. Not the case for Economics at top tier, and other most popular/prestigious courses at a handful of universities. You still need a 'proper' insurance for those. Everyone else - go for it.

Another one saying this is such a helpful thread. Back in my day (all fields etc) you put 5 choices and clearing was only if you'd really come a cropper. Nowadays it seems to be a way of seeing if you can pick up a bargain at the end of the sales!

That's definitely how it's evolving.

And it's interesting how the unis seem to be getting tactical about it! Birmingham released its grade requirements the night before, Warwick waited till the morning. Brum's now filled its places and Warwick hasn't - I doubt that's coincidence
